More than 4000 people have been left without power across NSW after scorching temperatures hit the state. About 1910 homes across East Gosford, Springfield, Gosford, North Gosford have experienced unplanned power outages from 4.30am on Wednesday, according to Ausgrid. A further 1888 people in Homebush West, Strathfield West, Homebush, Strathfield, Flemington, Sydney Olympic Park were also affected from 5.15am, while 729 people in Church Point, Scotland Island, Ingleside, Bayview, Elvina Bay, Mccarrs Creek were affected. The outages are set to be resolved by 8.30am for the Gosford and Western Sydney areas, however, Church Point, Scotland Island, Ingleside, Bayview, Elvina Bay, Mccarrs Creek will need to wait until 9am according to the Ausgrid website. An Ausgrid spokesperson confirmed the weather had brought on the outages. “There are currently 4,500 without power, which crews will be restoring when safe to do so,” the spokesperson said. “It’s a combination of yesterday’s extremely hot conditions, then the southerly change that brought the storms and wind. “We’re working to restore where we can, cancelling planned jobs in favour to get those back on. “Our emergency crews are out there working to restore power where they can.” The spokesperson could not provide a timeline for repairs, but said the issue would be resolved as soon as possible. They urged people to keep clear of fallen powerlines. “Never approach fallen powerlines — always assume they are live and stay at least eight metres or two car lengths away from them,” the spokesperson said. The fresh power outages follow scorching temperatures in Sydney on Tuesday, with temperatures having reached 42C in the outer western pockets of the city. More than 2,500 people were left without power across the city on Tuesday morning, with blackouts first reported about 10am spanning Macauley Ave, Chapel Rd and surrounding streets of Bankstown. Power was restored to the area shortly before midday. Conditions have begun to cool in Sydney on Wednesday, with the city tipped to reach a high of 24C with a chance of showers. Cloudy conditions and possible showers are expected to continue through Thursday before the sun is set to peek out again on Friday with a high of 25C. Saturday is set to reach 29C, while Sunday is also expected to be warm at 28C. However, there is a chance of rain and thunderstorms on Sunday.
The Atlantic Liberal caucus is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign as party leader in a letter expressing "deep concern" about the future of government. The letter dated Dec. 23 was shared publicly Sunday by New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, who has been saying since the fall that Trudeau should step down. Long wrote in a Facebook post that he shared the letter for "openness and transparency." "If we are to have any chance in the next election, and prevent a Pierre Poilievre government, we need new leadership with a new vision for our party and the country," Long wrote. Atlantic caucus chair and Nova Scotia MP Kody Blois penned the letter, saying it is no longer "tenable" for Trudeau to continue to lead the party. The letter notes that the country faces "instability" amid U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's tariff threats and signals from opposition parties that they will declare non-confidence in Trudeau's government at the first opportunity. The letter thanks Trudeau for his nine years of service as prime minister, saying he leaves a "positive and consequential legacy." It cautions Trudeau that could be undone if he stays on as leader. The letter comes less than two weeks after Chrystia Freeland's resignation from Trudeau's cabinet as finance minister and deputy prime minister. "Our colleagues this morning expressed their deep personal affection for you, their pride in our work as a Liberal team, but also their deep concern that without a leadership change that progress will be lost under a Pierre Poilievre-lead government," Blois wrote to Trudeau. Quathisha Epps alleged he repeatedly demanded sex from her “in exchange for overtime opportunities in the workplace,” according to a complaint filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. That led to revelations the Manhattan D.A.’s office was investigating Maddrey’s conduct, and the city Department of Investigation and federal authorities were looking into the overtime abuse claims. The probes are expected to focus on possible misuse of the budget codes officers use to designate the reasons for overtime, the sources said.
