James Guillory-Imagn Images When the Florida Panthers joined the NHL in 1993, Shayne Gostisbehere was a five-month-old infant in Pembroke Pines, midway between the team’s original home in Miami and its current digs in Sunrise. Hardcore fans in the region were few and far between. But Gostisbehere’s maternal grandfather, former Montrealer Denis Brodeur, was at the front of the line to become a season-ticket holder on Day 1. His passion for the sport was contagious. “I went to all the games with him,” Gostisbehere said. “He really got me into it. I’m shooting pucks on roller rinks. He’d hang up the soda cans. He was a big part of my success.” These days, the Panthers are the Stanley Cup champions and the toast of South Florida. But while growing up as a rink rat at the club’s practice facility in Coral Springs and learning his craft in their youth program, Gostisbehere was ahead of the curve. The same can be said for his playing style. When another Florida-born blueliner, Quinn Hughes, won the Norris Trophy last June, he was celebrated for his impressive offense and cerebral approach to playing defense, built off strong skating and sharp puck movement. A salary-cap crunch prevented Carolina from re-signing him after that run. But the 31-year-old didn’t hesitate to commit to a three-year pact when the Canes circled back around last summer. “To come to an organization like this, where everyone does everything right and they built this culture the last 10 years, it was a pretty easy decision for my wife and I,” he said. “Seeing it build up and getting that taste of playoff success, it was a lot of fun.” With Eric Tulsky in the GM’s chair for the first time, the Hurricanes went through a major roster revamp as they said goodbye to longtime contributors Brady Skjei, Brett Pesce and Teuvo Teravainen. Issues, Challenges that Shaped Telecoms Sector in 2024The Republican who ran for a House seat representing Roseville and Shoreview is contesting his election loss by challenging the residency of the Democrat who defeated him Nov. 5. Republican Paul Wikstrom filed the challenge in Ramsey County District Court Wednesday alleging that Democrat Curtis R. Johnson doesn’t live in District 40B. Johnson easily defeated Wikstrom to win the seat, receiving 65% of the vote. Wikstrom is asking the court to “invalidate and revoke any certificate of election issued to Johnson.” The challenge, if successful, could have implications for control of the House during the coming legislative session. The 134-member chamber is currently split between 67 Democrats and 67 Republicans for the first time since 1979. Minnesota law requires candidates to reside in districts they want to represent for six months prior to the election. If Wikstrom’s challenge succeeds, a special election would likely be called in February. Johnson, a Roseville Area Schools board member, faced questions about his residency during the campaign . He owns a home outside the district in Little Canada and began renting an apartment on Rice Street last spring to establish residency so he could run for the 40B House seat. In October, Johnson said in a statement that he was renting the Rice Street apartment while looking for a “forever home” in the district. His wife and their oldest child continued to live in their Little Canada house so they were not unnecessarily uprooted, he said. Johnson did not respond to a voicemail on Friday seeking comment. In a statement, a DFL spokesperson said Johnson lives in the district and expects the case to be dismissed. Wikstrom’s residency challenge alleges that Johnson continued to reside in Little Canada after renting the Roseville apartment. His campaign conducted surveillance of Johnson’s home and regularly saw his vehicle out front, according to affidavits filed with the case. Wikstrom’s campaign established an “investigative team” which put a piece of tape on Johnson’s apartment door to see if it was being used, looked into the window and slid a camera phone under the door. The challenge also alleges that Johnson never hooked up utilities at the apartment. Wikstrom deferred questions about the case to his attorney, who declined to comment. His case will be decided by the Minnesota Supreme Court, which handles election challenges. Residency questions are common during campaigns for state legislative seats. Republican Bob Barrett was the last candidate to be found ineligible when the Supreme Court ruled in 2016 he didn’t live in the Taylors Falls district he wanted to represent.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said he was “an inspiration” who “led a truly remarkable life dedicated to public service with a genuine care for people”. He fundamentally cared and consistently toiled to help those in need.” Gordon Brown, another former prime minister, said it was a “privilege” to have known Mr Carter, who “will be mourned, not just in America, but in every continent where human rights are valued”. Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington DC before being buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and, finally, the White House, where he took office as 39th president in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked more than four decades leading The Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. ST. PAUL — A former lawmaker who is the longest-serving woman in the history of the Minnesota House has suffered a stroke. Former Rep. Mary Murphy, DFL-Hermantown, experienced a stroke last week and is in comfort care following complications, House Speaker Melissa Hortman said in a Facebook post late Monday. Hortman said Murphy remains hospitalized until she can be transferred to a hospice care facility. “Mary has had some visitors. Her family hopes that Mary could feel and appreciate their presence,” Hortman said. “While heart-wrenching, the family has determined that hospice is the best solution. Mary will receive comfort care at the hospital until she can be placed in a hospice care facility, which they expect to happen soon.” Murphy, 85, is the second-longest-serving member of the Minnesota House and the longest-serving female legislator. She was first elected in 1976 and was defeated in her bid to represent the Duluth-area seat in 2022 by 33 votes. She’s also a former history and social studies teacher. Murphy was supposed to participate in last week’s Electoral College voting last week at the Capitol, an honor bestowed by party officials. She didn’t attend and an alternate was elevated.
