Then, when the consequences of their hatred begin to mount, victims often cling to the propaganda in pathetic, heartbreaking ways. Wednesday on the social media platform X, the prominent conservative account “Libs of TikTok” shared a TikTok video from Idaho salon owner Tiffney Prickett, who admitted that her viral rants against supporters have cost her clients and left her searching for work in the fast-food industry. “So, I’m just continuing to lose clients,” Prickett said. “And I’m — I would rather go work at Chipotle, and I was not lying when I said that I was headed to my Chipotle interview because I did apply to Chipotle.” Moments later, she explained why she had no problem surrendering her career as a stylist to work in fast food. “But I would rather go and do what I need to do and work at Chipotle after my 22-year career in this industry and refuse to let people feel comfortable in my space, to support racism, homophobia and misogyny — and rapist, a rapist — I would rather go work there than have people feel comfortable in my space with that and that mentality,” the deluded salon owner said. Wednesday’s clip came on the heels of an earlier rant, which “Libs of TikTok” shared on Sunday. In that earlier rant, Prickett proudly declared her willingness to sever ties with a 15-year client. Never mind that said client had treated the salon owner with kindness. “I didn’t want to deal with them anyway because I knew — I knew that that whole family were Trump supporters because I’ve been doing her for 15 years. I’ve been to her family functions and family events. She’s given me gifts over the years. She was a very good client,” Prickett said. Readers may watch both clips below. FAFO — Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) Of course, decades of conditioning via schools and popular culture prepared Prickett and many other victims to receive anti-Trump propaganda. One marvels, in fact, at her programmed-sounding recitation of those familiar charges against supporters: racism, homophobia, misogyny, etc. Above all, however, nothing strikes the viewer with more force than Prickett’s jaw-dropping refusal to engage in introspection. She simply does not recognize the people who filled her head with those lies as her true enemies. Some might dismiss her behavior as stubbornness, but the problem of propaganda runs much deeper. In fact, while listening to Prickett I was reminded of a passage from the incredible 1991 book “ ,” by Jung Chang, a woman who came of age as a teenager in China during Communist dictator brutal Cultural Revolution of the 1960s. In 1972, Chang and her mother visited a family friend named Tung. Mao’s regime had recently released Tung from prison after five years in solitary confinement. When his wife brought him new clothes on the day of his release, Tung chastised her. “You shouldn’t have just brought me material goods. You should have brought me spiritual food,” he said, referring to Mao’s writings. Years later, the author still did not feel like mocking Tung. “I was staying with his family at the time,” Chang wrote, “and saw him making them study Mao’s articles every day, with a seriousness which I found more tragic than ridiculous.” Tung, of course, had so internalized the Maoist regime’s propaganda that even five years in prison did not awaken him. Instead, he continued to mistake his enemy for his savior (“spiritual food”). In like manner, not even the loss of clients — good people who treated her with kindness — and the subsequent destruction of a 22-year career could persuade Pickett to look inward and begin to question the people who lied to her about Trump and his supporters. JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel approved a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon's Hezbollah militants on Tuesday that would end nearly 14 months of fighting linked to the war in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire, starting at 4 a.m. local time Wednesday, would mark the first major step toward ending the regionwide unrest triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. But it does not address the devastating war in Gaza , where Hamas is still holding dozens of hostages and the conflict is more intractable. Hours before the ceasefire with Hezbollah was to take effect, Israel carried out the most intense wave of strikes in Beirut and its southern suburbs since the start of the conflict and issued a record number of evacuation warnings. At least 42 people were killed in strikes across the country, according to local authorities. Another huge airstrike shook Beirut shortly after the ceasefire was announced. There appeared to be lingering disagreement over whether Israel would have the right to strike Hezbollah if it believed the militants had violated the agreement, something Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted was part of the deal but which Lebanese and Hezbollah officials have rejected. Israel's security Cabinet approved the U.S.-France-brokered ceasefire agreement after Netanyahu presented it, his office said. U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking in Washington, called the agreement “good news” and said his administration would make a renewed push for a ceasefire in Gaza. The Biden administration spent much of this year trying to broker a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza but the talks repeatedly sputtered to a halt . President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to bring peace to the Middle East without saying how. Still, any halt to the fighting in Lebanon is expected to reduce the likelihood of war between Israel and Iran, which backs both Hezbollah and Hamas and exchanged direct fire with Israel on two occasions earlier this year. Israel says it will ‘attack with might’ if Hezbollah breaks truce Netanyahu presented the ceasefire proposal to Cabinet ministers after a televised address in which he listed accomplishments against Israel’s enemies across the region. He said a ceasefire with Hezbollah would further isolate Hamas in Gaza and allow Israel to focus on its main enemy, Iran. “If Hezbollah breaks the agreement and tries to rearm, we will attack,” he said. “For every violation, we will attack with might.” The ceasefire deal calls for a two-month initial halt in fighting and would require Hezbollah to end its armed presence in a broad swath of southern Lebanon, while Israeli troops would return to their side of the border. Thousands of additional Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers would deploy in the south, and an international panel headed by the United States would monitor compliance. Biden said Israel reserved the right to quickly resume operations in Lebanon if Hezbollah breaks the terms of the truce, but that the deal "was designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Netanyahu’s office said Israel appreciated the U.S. efforts in securing the deal but “reserves the right to act against every threat to its security.” Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the ceasefire and described it as a crucial step toward stability and the return of displaced people. Hezbollah has said it accepts the proposal, but a senior official with the group said Tuesday it had not seen the agreement in its final form. “After reviewing the agreement signed by the enemy government, we will see if there is a match between what we stated and what was agreed upon by the Lebanese officials,” Mahmoud Qamati, deputy chair of Hezbollah’s political council, told the Al Jazeera news network. “We want an end to the aggression, of course, but not at the expense of the sovereignty of the state," he said, referring to Israel's demand for freedom of action. “Any violation of sovereignty is refused.” Warplanes bombard Beirut and its southern suburbs Even as ceasefire efforts gained momentum in recent days, Israel continued to strike what it called Hezbollah targets across Lebanon while the militants fired rockets, missiles and drones across the border. An Israeli strike on Tuesday leveled a residential building in central Beirut — the second time in recent days warplanes have hit the crowded area near downtown. At least seven people were killed and 37 wounded, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. Israel also struck a building in Beirut's bustling commercial district of Hamra for the first time, hitting a site around 400 meters (yards) from Lebanon’s Central Bank. There were no reports of casualties. The Israeli military said it struck targets linked to Hezbollah's financial arm. The evacuation warnings covered many areas, including parts of Beirut that previously were not targeted. The warnings sent residents fleeing. Traffic was gridlocked, with mattresses tied to some cars. Dozens of people, some wearing pajamas, gathered in a central square, huddling under blankets or standing around fires as Israeli drones buzzed overhead. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee issued evacuation warnings for 20 buildings in Beirut's southern suburbs, where Hezbollah has a major presence, as well as a warning for the southern town of Naqoura where the U.N. peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, is headquartered. UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti said peacekeepers will not evacuate. Israeli forces reach Litani River in southern Lebanon The Israeli military also said its ground troops clashed with Hezbollah forces and destroyed rocket launchers in the Slouqi area on the eastern end of the Litani River, a few kilometers (miles) from the Israeli border. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah would be required to move its forces north of the Litani, which in some places is about 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the border. Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, saying it was showing support for the Palestinians, a day after Hamas carried out its attack on southern Israel, triggering the Gaza war. Israel returned fire on Hezbollah, and the two sides have exchanged barrages ever since. Israel escalated its bombardment in mid-September and later sent troops into Lebanon, vowing to put an end to Hezbollah fire so tens of thousands of evacuated Israelis could return to their homes. More than 3,760 people have been killed by Israeli fire in Lebanon the past 13 months, many of them civilians, according to Lebanese health officials. The bombardment has driven 1.2 million people from their homes. Israel says it has killed more than 2,000 Hezbollah members. Hezbollah fire has forced some 50,000 Israelis to evacuate in the country’s north, and its rockets have reached as far south in Israel as Tel Aviv. At least 75 people have been killed, more than half of them civilians. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn’t anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday’s 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy’s motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. Nov. 22, 1963 When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas, they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn’t quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. The collection In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he’d allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden’s administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what’s been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Withheld files Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone’s Social Security number. There are about 500 documents where all the information is redacted, Posner said, and those include Oswald’s and Ruby’s tax returns. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. Trump’s transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. A continued fascination From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper’s perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime,” said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said his interest in the assassination dates back to the event itself, when he was a child. “It just seemed so fantastical that one very disturbed individual could end up pulling off the crime of the century,” Sabato said. “But the more I studied it, the more I realized that is a very possible, maybe even probable in my view, hypothesis.” Advertisement Advertisement

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — Just a short stroll from the iconic pink towers of the Atlantis Resort is a Mayan Temple replica sliced by a near-vertical water slide in which giddy riders are funneled into a shark tank via a see-through (and ultimately protective) tube. It’s called the Leap of Faith. Caleb Love had a chance to take that plunge this week, to maybe even metaphorically break the spell of two straight performances that went underwater, but he and roommate Trey Townsend had better things to do. “We were both asleep while everyone else was out there on the water slide,” Love said. Sitting next to UA coach Tommy Lloyd and Townsend on the Battle 4 Atlantis interview podium Tuesday, before the Wildcats face Davidson in their tournament opener Wednesday, Love drew a quick response on that one. “You guys didn’t do the slide?” Lloyd said, grinning. “I’ve failed as a coach.” Love didn’t really need to, in one sense. He has already taken a leap of faith. Religious faith, that is. With a little extra help from mom. No water slides, no beach, no sunset meditations. Just faith. “I’ve had time to reflect over these past few days,” Love said. “I kind of get locked back in with my faith, and having talks with my mom. She’s been my backbone and my source of comfort, and she's kind of helped me with that. I'm just ready to go out there and hoop.” The Wildcats undoubtedly hope so. They are entering the Battle 4 Atlantis coming off two straight losses, at Wisconsin and against Duke at McKale Center, games when Love swam well behind his preseason all-American billing. Averaging 10.3 points on 32.0% shooting over four games this season so far, Love averaged only 7.0 points and 6.0 rebounds against Wisconsin and Duke, while making just 1 of 15 3-pointers. He also shot only 36% from 2-point range and took just four combined free throws. He wasn’t able to make an impact inside or outside, as Love had hoped entering the season, but said those around him stood strong. “My teammates, my coaches, support me every day and that’s never wavered — good game, bad game, bad shot, good shot, turnover, assist,” Love said. “So I go out there and I'm gonna play with confidence, utmost confidence, and not put any pressure on myself.” It would hardly be a surprise if there was self-imposed pressure. After all, Love was a preseason first-team All-American, and returning from an NBA Draft process last spring with the goal of helping his team and resume during a fifth season of college basketball. Also, Love was the only returning starter of a team ranked No. 10 to start the season. All eyes were on him. But Love said he didn’t change. “I didn't put pressure on myself,” Love said. “I've played with pressure all my life. When you think about it, in the grand scheme of things, I'm playing basketball and that's just all it is. Putting pressure on myself is only gonna hurt me or hinder me. So it’s just go out there and have fun, playing as hard as I can, doing whatever the team needs.” It hasn't been all the same on the court for Love, though. For one thing, defenses have been focusing on him more than ever this season, deploying a variety of tricks. Love says setting better screens and moving better off the ball would help solve that problem. The other thing, Love said, has been his offseason focus on 3-point shooting off the catch. That was understandable, considering that Love shot just 29.9% from 3 at North Carolina in 2023-24 to 33.2% last season but needed even more efficiency to help his NBA stock. But while he aimed for all those 3s, Love's proven ability to drive to the basket grew rusty. His two-point shooting has dropped from 50.2% last season to 45.5% this season, while those four free throws he shot over the previous two games are actually the only four he’s shot all season. “What you focus on more is what you're probably gonna do more, and that's been my focus, the 3-point shot,” Love said. “I think I shot probably too many instead of playing inside out. So it’s trying to get downhill more. "I've done great in the past with doing that. So I’ve got to get back to that and work my way out. My shot’s gonna fall. Neither is Lloyd. The UA expressed support for Love at Wisconsin, after the Duke game and again in Tuesday’s press conference. Lloyd, it appears, has taken a leap of faith, too. “I love Caleb,” Lloyd said. “Caleb's teammates love Caleb, and I'm not worried. Caleb's gonna come out and he could play out of his mind the next three days. If he doesn't play out of his mind the next few days, we're going to keep going forward. “So there's no concern on my end. If Caleb playing well is what's going to stand between us and being a good team, I feel pretty good. Because ultimately he's going to play great. Increasingly, society has evolved into one where automation and technology rule the day. In this digital society, IT and cybersecurity risk management must be elevated to the same level as market risk, compliance risk, operational risk, and so on. Another area undergoing considerable change is third party risk management . What does the next year have in store for third party risk management? Considering this for Digital Journal is Brad Hibbert, Chief Strategy Officer & Chief Operating Officer at the company Prevalent . Hibbert divides his assessment into two key areas: the maturity of third party risk management and the necessity of transforming the process into ‘third party lifecycle management’ (and with this achieving greater stability). Third party risk management matures from experiment to expectation According to Hibbert, the year has been a record one “for third-party security incidents , with breaches such as MOVEit dominating the headlines.” In response there has been “regulatory pressure from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and several European entities to improve the governance over third-party outsourcing arrangements is also driving the evolution of third party risk management from a project that aims to manage risks to a program that addresses risks across a third-party lifecycle.” In other words, explains Hibbert, “third party risk managementis no longer an experiment; it’s an expectation. This maturation has solidified its position as a table stakes element in organizational risk management decision making.” So what does this mean for an enterprise? Hibbert suspects “despite economic uncertainty, inflation, and labor shortages, investment in third party risk management is expected to remain consistent into 2024. Board-level and executive-level engagement in third party risk management will persist due to continued third-party security incidents and regulatory pressure. While challenges in finding skilled third party risk management practitioners may continue, efficiency and effectiveness in third party risk management programs will improve thanks to generative AI, machine learning, data analysis, enhanced automation, and program outsourcing.” Engagement from multiple internal teams will transform third-party risk management into third-party lifecycle management For the second area of inquiry, Hibberts predicts a transformation in third party risk management. He considers: “It’s not enough to manage risks, you have to manage the lifecycle of a vendor relationship to understand the context of the risks your organization is exposed to. Otherwise, third party risk management devolves into a check-the-box exercise. This will require third party risk management program owners to expand the scope of their efforts to include all parties that interact with third-party vendors and suppliers.” Why a lifecycle-based approach? According to Hibbert: “The third-party lifecycle encompasses all activities related to a vendor from cradle to grave – including vendor onboarding, ongoing monitoring, compliance, risk management, and offboarding. This evolution is driven by different personas and departments, each with their specific needs and interests.” As to internal firm dynamics, Hibbert predicts: “procurement is expected to play a more prominent role in driving third-party lifecycle management. Legal departments will automate clause detection and comparative analysis. Risk management will continue to be a core player, while operations will use data sets from various sources to enhance operational resilience and ensure quality. Audits will persist, as compliance and regulatory mandates become more complex.
