CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes continues to build great chemistry with his tight end — just not the one you might think. Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Noah Gray for the second straight week as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. A week after losing at Buffalo, the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (10-1) maintained their position atop the AFC. ZURICH — Saudi Arabia was officially confirmed Wednesday by FIFA as host of the 2034 World Cup in men's soccer, giving the oil-rich kingdom its biggest prize yet for massive spending on global sports driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi bid was the only candidate and was acclaimed by the applause of more than 200 FIFA member federations. They took part remotely in an online meeting hosted in Zurich by the soccer body's president Gianni Infantino. "The vote of the congress is loud and clear," said Infantino, who had asked officials on a bank of screens to clap their hands at head level to show their support. The decision was combined with approving the only candidate to host the 2030 World Cup. Spain, Portugal and Morocco will co-host in a six-nation project, with Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay each getting one of the 104 games. The South American connection will mark the centenary of Uruguay hosting the first World Cup in 1930. The decisions complete a mostly opaque 15-month bid process which Infantino helped steer toward Saudi Arabia without a rival candidate, without taking questions, and which human rights groups warn will put the lives of migrant workers at risk. "We look forward to hosting an exceptional and unprecedented edition of the FIFA World Cup by harnessing our strengths and capabilities to bring joy to football fans around the world," Prince Mohammed said in a statement. FIFA and Saudi officials have said hosting the 2034 tournament can accelerate change, including more freedoms and rights for women, with Infantino on Wednesday calling the World Cup a "unique catalyst for positive social change and unity." "I fully trust our hosts to address all open points in this process, and deliver a World Cup that meets the world's expectations," the FIFA president said. An international collective of rights groups said FIFA made a "reckless decision" to approve Saudi Arabia without getting public assurances, and the Football Supporters Europe group said it was "the day football truly lost its mind." Zoom Video Communications Inc. gave a sales forecast for the current quarter that failed to impress investors who were expecting a bigger boost from the company’s expanded suite of products. NSE Revenue will be about $1.18 billion in the period ending in January, Zoom said Monday in a statement. Profit, excluding some items, will be $1.29 to $1.30 a share. Analysts, on average, projected adjusted earnings of $1.28 a share on sales of $1.17 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The shares declined about 4.5% in extended trading after closing at $89.03 in New York. While Zoom’s outlook met estimates, the stock had gained about 48% since the company’s last earnings report in August on optimism about the new products. The software maker known for videoconferencing has expanded its suite of tools to offer phone systems, a contact center application and artificial intelligence assistants. In October, Zoom named former Microsoft Corp. executive Michelle Chang as chief financial officer to replace Kelly Steckelberg, who left to join design startup Canva Inc. Zoom has seen a 59% increase in monthly active users of its AI assistant since the prior quarter, the company said in a presentation to supplement its earnings statement. It also topped 1,250 customers of its contact center application. While there were “no major issues” with the results, a steep gain for the shares headed into Monday’s earnings means the results may not attract new investors, wrote Tyler Radke, an analyst at Citigroup. BY BUFFALO NEXT STAFF Dec. 12, 2024 What to know about the week ahead Family Promise of Western New York , the nonprofit organization that operates one of only two emergency shelters in Erie County for families experiencing homelessness, is bringing its proposal for a second location to the Buffalo Planning Board and Buffalo Zoning Board of Appeals next week, according to an application submitted to the city. A rendering of the proposed new Family Promise shelter on East Ferry Street that would serve up to eight families at a time. The agency, an affiliate of the national Family Promise organization, serves up to six families at a time at its current location on Hickory Street, and helped 39 families and 198 individuals in its 2023 fiscal year with housing and support services to get back on their feet. But officials have noted that more than 100 families are living in motels waiting for a shelter space, and county officials asked it to do more. Plans for the $6.8 million project envision a similar-sized facility for up to eight families at a time, to be located on a 0.6-acre property that includes city-owned parcels at 229, 235, 239, 245 and 247 E. Ferry St. and 130 and 134 Welker St. The 19,165-square-foot facility will consist of a one-story residential wing on the east side and a two-story common area and staff wing on the west. It will contain 40 beds in eight family rooms sized for families of four or six people, but linked together by hotel-style inner doors so that rooms can be combined to house families of seven to 10 if needed. Additionally, the board will review a proposal by Bison Fleet Services to expand its operation at 1615 William St., by demolishing an existing 4,000-square-foot warehouse while also proposing an 8,720-square-foot addition with a corrugated metal facade to the existing 10,700-square-foot motor modification center, behind a smaller existing 2,242-square-foot two-story office building. The $2.2 million vehicle repair garage project, to be built on the 1.3-acre light industrial site, will take about nine to 10 months. As in past years, YouTube was the single most popular platform teenagers used — 90% said they watched videos on the site, down slightly from 95% in 2022. Nearly three-quarters said they visit YouTube every day. There was a slight downward trend in several popular apps teens used. For instance, 63% of teens said they used TikTok, down from 67% and Snapchat slipped to 55% from 59%. This small decline could be due to pandemic-era restrictions easing up and kids having more time to see friends in person, but it’s not enough to be truly meaningful. X saw the biggest decline among teenage users. Only 17% of teenagers said they use X, down from 23% in 2022, the year Elon Musk bought the platform. Reddit held steady at 14%. About 6% of teenagers said they use Threads, Meta’s answer to X that launched in 2023. The report comes as countries around the world are grappling with how to handle the effects of social media on young people’s well-being. Australia recently passed a law banning kids under 16 from social networks, though it’s unclear how it will be able to enforce the age limit — and whether it will come with unintended consequences such as isolating vulnerable kids from their peers. Meta’s messaging service WhatsApp was a rare exception in that it saw the number of teenage users increase, to 23% from 17% in 2022. Pew also asked kids how often they use various online platforms. Small but significant numbers said they are on them “almost constantly.” For YouTube, 15% reported constant use, for TikTok, 16% and for Snapchat, 13%. As in previous surveys, girls were more likely to use TikTok almost constantly while boys gravitated to YouTube. There was no meaningful gender difference in the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook.
