The game is set to be played at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of two-time defending Super Bowl champion, the Kansas City Chiefs. On Friday, just one day before the game, Coach Prime and the Buffaloes arrived at the NFL stadium. Please consider supporting us with a subscription.Wharfedale, despite its charm, tends to get rather packed during the summer months. However, there's a charmingly named North Yorkshire village, slightly off the usual tourist trail that remains somewhat quieter. The narrow and winding two-mile road from Burnsall to Appletreewick doesn't lead anywhere else. You don't pass through Appletreewick unless you intend to or stumble upon it by happy accident. As such, it doesn't see the same level of activity as Burnsall during the peak season. That's not to say it's devoid of tourists in winter. In an age where nearly everyone has a car and a smartphone, no place in the Yorkshire Dales is truly hidden. And visitors have good reason to search for Appletreewick online. It's a typical Dales village with old stone houses overlooking the expansive, green Wharfedale. Noteworthy buildings include the intriguingly named 15th-century Mock Beggar Hall and High Hall, a Tudor mansion, reports Yorkshire Live . The entirety of High Hall, which radiates nobility both inside and out, is available for holiday rentals if you fancy playing pretend as a 16th-century noble family for a week. Who wouldn't? Those on more modest budgets may prefer to stay in one of Appletreewick's holiday cottages or campsites. It's further from the Wharfe than say Grassington or Burnsall, so if you're keen on a dip, you'll need to be prepared and determined. If it's too cold or you simply can't be bothered, Appletreewick boasts two pubs - the New Inn and the Craven Arms - which are open all year round. Richard, a local from the Craven Arms, shares his thoughts on the village: "It's a very historic village and one of the most beautiful villages in the Dales." He adds, "It's a smaller road to get here so it's a bit more isolated – but not a lot." When asked about the name 'Appletreewick', Richard confirms that it does indeed have a connection with apple trees, saying, "The answer is yes to both." He elaborates that the Domesday Book of 1086 records it as æppel-trēow wīc, which translates from Old English to mean 'a farm specialising in apples'. This historical detail might be the reason why Appletreewick boasts its own cider. For those keen to sample some, the Growling Shrew bottle shop in Skipton is known to occasionally stock Appletreewick Cider. CARSON, Calif. — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league's biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS' most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a playoff-record 18 goals in five games to win another crown. “I’m just so proud of this group after the challenges that we (had) and the way they bounced back and competed as a group,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “We spent a lot of energy at the start, but I’m just so proud of these guys. They’ve cemented themselves as legends in this club.” Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable postseason charge ended one win shy of their first Cup championship. With the league's youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS' playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. “I love these guys,” Schwarz said. “Some guys, they are crying. In the big picture, that’s a start. Sometimes when you lose the final, it’s tough, but you use this experience to create the next energy, the next intensity.” The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offense impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched this game in a suit, but his teammates hadn't forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA's opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig's jersey to their fans during the celebration. “I was really waiting for this moment,” said Paintsil, who scored his 14th goal of an impressive season. “I’m much more, 10 times faster than them, and Gaston saw the space. ... It was really a good thing. We did it for Riqui, and we did it for our family that came, and our supporters.” Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy’s striker. Brugman was named the MLS Cup MVP after a commanding performance in midfield. The Uruguayan hadn't started a match for the Galaxy since Oct. 5, playing only as a postseason substitute before the final. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy's crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward's outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy's striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA's penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy's usually shaky defense gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while LA's Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy's penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn't finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. After Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz received the MLS Cup that bears his name because of his steady financial support of the league during its shaky years, Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida carried the trophy onto a stage filled with his teammates for a celebration amid fireworks and confetti. The Galaxy extended their lead over DC United (4) for the most MLS Cup championships in league history. The Red Bulls remain one of three original MLS franchises never to win the title, along with FC Dallas and the New England Revolution. The Galaxy's Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player also won it all with Toronto in 2017. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of traveling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club's breakthrough on MLS' biggest stage. Just last season, the Galaxy's own supporters boycotted the team at certain matches, fed up with years of mismanagement and no progress. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier "Chicharito" Hernández swiftly rebuilt itself into a contender this season by spending big to get lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and Paintsil out of Belgium. The duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS' best players. Puig stayed in last week's game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game's only goal. Get local news delivered to your inbox!
China Moves Beyond Foam by Phasing Out PFOS in FirefightingNoneThe word “Merci” was projected onto the front of Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral as it reopened on Saturday, in thanks for its salvation after a devastating fire that brought the 860-year-old building close to collapse five years ago. The first responders who helped preserve the Gothic masterpiece and some of those who subsequently restored it received a standing ovation after the Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, struck the doors of Notre Dame three times with his crozier before symbolically reopening the building. “I stand before you to express the gratitude of the French nation, our gratitude to all those who saved, helped and rebuilt the cathedral,” French President Emmanuel Macron said. “Tonight we can together share joy and pride. Long live Notre Dame de Paris, long live the Republic and long live France,” he said. Minutes earlier, the cathedral’s bells rang out and Macron welcomed guests, including US President-elect Donald Trump. Pope Francis said it was a day of “joy, celebration and praise.” In a message read aloud, the pope hoped “the rebirth of this admirable church would constitute a prophetic sign of the renewal of the Church in France.” Notre Dame has been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and white stone and gold decorations shining brightly once again. Getting Trump to attend, and organizing a meeting between him and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the Elysees Palace ahead of the Notre Dame ceremony, was a coup for Macron as he faces a political crisis at home, after parliament ousted his prime minister . Trump shook hands with Britain’s Prince William and heads of state and government as he made his way to the front of the cathedral. He sat next to Macron in the front row. Earlier, guests stood and applauded as Zelensky walked into the cathedral. US billionaire Elon Musk, a close adviser in Trump’s transition team, also attended, as did Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and former French presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Earlier, tourists, who still cannot go inside the cathedral, snapped pictures with the restored building in the background as final preparations for the event went on inside. “It was very sad to see it burnt down and all black and ashy but amazing to see it rebuilt. Yeah, it’s very special,” said 26-year-old US tourist Amanda Nguyen, from Texas. Some Parisians were particularly thrilled. “What does Notre Dame mean to me? This. Look, it’s here,” said care worker Pascal Tordeux, displaying a tattoo on his arm representing the cathedral. “It means everything.” “I saw the construction every day from my window, the spire being brought down, being brought back. I saw it burn, I saw it rise again. I followed it day by day,” said Tordeux, who lives across the river from Notre Dame. On the evening of April 15, 2019, dismayed Parisians rushed to the scene and TV viewers worldwide watched horrified as the fire raged through the cathedral. “The planet was shaken on that day,” Macron said ahead of Saturday’s event. “The shock of the reopening will – I believe and I want to believe – be as strong as that of the fire, but it will be a shock of hope.” Would-be visitors can now book a free ticket online, on the Cathedral’s website. But on Saturday, the first day bookings could be made for the coming days, all tickets were gone, a message on the site said. Group visits will be allowed next year — from February 1 for religious groups and from June 9 for tourists with guides. The Catholic Church expects the cathedral to welcome 15 million visitors each year. Thousands of experts — from carpenters and stonemasons to stained glass window artists — worked around the clock for the last five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that was destroyed or damaged. “Notre Dame is more than a Parisian or French monument. It’s also a universal monument,” said historian Damien Berne. “It’s a landmark, an emblem, a point of reference that reassures in a globalized world where everything evolves permanently,” said Berne, a member of the scientific council for the restoration. The cathedral’s first stone was laid in 1163, and construction continued for much of the next century, with major restoration and additions made in the 17th and 18th centuries. Victor Hugo helped make the cathedral a symbol of Paris and France when he used it as a setting for his 1831 novel “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Quasimodo, the main character, has been portrayed in Hollywood movies, an animated Disney adaptation and in musicals. So much money poured in for the renovation from all over the world — more than 840 million euros ($880 million), according to Macron’s office — that there are still funds left over for further investment in the building.
CARSON, Calif. — The LA Galaxy finished 26th in the 29-team Major League Soccer standings just one season ago, and their biggest supporters boycotted certain matches to protest a decade of poor performance. The most successful club in league history seemed light years away from its luminous prime. When the Galaxy raised the MLS Cup again Saturday amid confetti and fireworks, their spectacular transformation was complete. In only one year, a team that was profoundly lost had rediscovered its peerless championship pedigree. "We won this trophy, and it's finally back where it belongs," striker Dejan Joveljic said. Joseph Paintsil and Joveljic scored in the first half, and the Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
