DURHAM, N.C. — Duke's Cooper Flagg knows what's coming from older and stronger defenders. So too does Auburn coach Bruce Pearl when it comes to the pressure facing his frontcourt star, Johni Broome. On Wednesday night, the two preseason Associated Press All-Americans headlined a heavyweight matchup worthy of March, though from very different positions: Flagg as the 17-year-old touted freshman mentioned as a possible No. 1 overall NBA draft pick long before showing up on campus, Broome as the 22-year-old fifth-year senior who started his career at a mid-major. Yet they're each shouldering the burden of top billing on a team with national title aspirations, all on display as the ninth-ranked Blue Devils beat the second-ranked Tigers 84-78 in the ACC/SEC Challenge. The 6-foot-9, 205-pound Flagg finished with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds with four assists, three steals and two blocks. The 6-10 240-pound Broome had 20 points, 12 rebounds and three assists before fouling out late. They didn't match up directly, but remained the gravitational force at the center of everything — from offensive plans to collapsing defenses — all the same. For Flagg, it was sign of big-game growth after late stumbles in losses to Kentucky and Kansas, along with handling the physical play of the Tigers. "That's something I'm going to start to see more and more," Flagg said. "It's definitely going to be a game plan for the other team, just to try and be physical with me. I think that's something that I've been dealing with since I was in sixth, seventh grade. People look at me and think they can just out-tough me, be more physical with me, and it would take me out the game. "But I've just got to keep playing through it, keep learning how to use that against them and just keep getting better." He did that against the veteran-laden Tigers, scoring 16 points and drawing seven fouls while getting to the line nine times after halftime. He felt several of those, too, such as Chaney Johnson's off-ball bump that knocked him to the hardwood midway through the second half and left him wincing. "I told him all week: 'They're going at you the whole time,'" junior teammate Tyrese Proctor said. "They had a couple of dirty plays. I just told him to keep his head composed and poised and just trust himself." Flagg pushed through regardless and showed some of his smooth moves, particularly in the second half. A dribble drive into the lane for a fallaway jumper over 6-11 big man Dylan Cardwell; pouncing on a defensive switch to drive and easily score over 6-4 guard Denver Jones; a spinning drop-step score in the paint while being fouled, leaving Pearl staring at officials and pointing to the Tigers' end of the court about an earlier no-call. Flagg also had no turnovers in his 37 minutes, a reversal after losing late turnovers in the losses to the Wildcats and Jayhawks. "To be able to coach him, he never fights you," Duke coach Jon Scheyer said. "He just never fights you. In a game, you can get on him. In practice he's always wanting to get better and in every aspect of his game. "I've always felt like Cooper's a one-time guy. He needs to experience something one time to get adjusted." As for Broome, he was coming off a dominating run through the Maui Invitational that made him the AP men's college basketball national player of the week Tuesday. Auburn also jumped two spots in Monday's latest AP Top 25, erasing nearly all of top-ranked Kansas' previous margin on the No. 2-ranked team. And that made the Tigers just the second top-2 nonconference team to play in Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1965 and first since top-ranked Michigan's "Fab Five" lost here December 1992 — exactly 32 years ago Thursday. Broome, who played his first two college seasons at Morehead State, offered matchup concerns with his ability to handle the ball on the perimeter, alter shots and attack the glass. And he was unbothered by the hostility of Duke's famously rambunctious "Cameron Crazies" fans, staring at them through much of pregame warmups with a grin and even laughing multiple times. He didn't shoot well early (2 for 9 in the first half) but started thriving in the pick-and-roll after halftime with Duke's defense stretched by Auburn's 3-point shooters. He nearly had a double-double in the second half (15 points, nine rebounds), including when he finished at the rim through Mason Gillis' foul and knocked Gillis to the ground — then gave him a lengthy stare as he stood over him. Broome led the Tigers until fouling out with 15 seconds left with Blue Devils fans starting to chant "Our house! Our house!" to mark another home win in their famed arena. He never flinched, even in the face of Auburn's first loss. "I think he's handled (the pressure) really well," Pearl said. "One of the reasons our team has played well so far this year is Johni's been a tremendously consistent player. Clearly a (national) player of the year candidate. If our team continues to win, he's our best player. ... He's able to do it on both ends, and he's able to do it inside and out." Get local news delivered to your inbox!

Any delays in selecting a new board chairman for the Bank of Thailand is unlikely to impact the central bank's operations and overall banking industry, as the chairman's role primarily focuses on internal operations rather than shaping the bank's policies, according to experts and economists. MORE POLITICAL ISSUES Pipat Luengnaruemitcha, managing director and chief economist at Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group (KKP), said the selection and appointment process for the central bank's chairman would not impact the bank's operations, as the post plays a key role in internal matters rather than in shaping the bank's policies. "The delay in the process is more of a political and legal issue than a matter of policy management for the Bank of Thailand, so it will not impact economic and monetary policies," Mr Pipat said. Mr Pipat said disqualifying Kittiratt Na-Ranong from the race to become central bank chairman would alleviate concerns about political connections and interference. Jitipol Puksamatanan, head of investment strategy at Finansia Syrus Securities Plc, said investors concerned about the central bank's independence might feel relieved after the Council of State disqualified Mr Kittiratt from being appointed. "I personally do not pay attention to this issue because most of us know that the board's chairman does not influence the central bank's policies. I have no idea why those behind Mr Kittiratt's appointment pursued this move, which sparked public interest and complaints. Now, it's over," he said. However, Mr Jitipol does not expect the pressure from the political side to ease, especially regarding the central bank's alignment with government demands. "We've heard repeatedly from the Finance Ministry and other government allies about what the Bank of Thailand should do, including how to use the country's international reserves for government purposes. These calls will continue even after Mr Kittiratt's disqualification," he noted. At the same time, he said the central bank should not be "too independent" and must effectively address inflation to support the country's economic performance. Mr Jitipol emphasised that the new candidate for the position of board chairman should have a solid understanding of both fiscal and monetary policies, and should not have a "hidden agenda". Suwat Wattanapornprom, an analyst with Krungsri Securities, said the capital market would closely monitor new candidates for the position. "We hope the person who takes this role can act as a bridge between the central bank and the government, ensuring both sides can perform their duties coherently and flexibly," he said. "The conflicts between the government and the Bank of Thailand benefit no one," said Mr Suwat. "Sometimes, monetary policy is too tight, while government policies pose risks to fiscal stability. Hopefully, the new chairman can help create a balance between monetary and fiscal policies." DELAYS AND CONTROVERSY The selection process for a new board chairman of the central bank has been marked by delays and controversy. Scheduled meetings were postponed amid rising concerns over potential political interference after reports suggested the government intended to propose its own candidate to succeed Porametee Vimolsiri, whose term ends next October. Mr Kittiratt, a former commerce minister, was widely regarded as being a leading contender for the position. He previously served as deputy leader and chief economic strategist for the Pheu Thai Party. He has been critical of the central bank's interest rate policy and its regulatory independence. Mr Kittiratt was previously nominated as an advisor to former premier Srettha Thavisin. The selection committee, chaired by Satit Limpongpan, had to postpone its meetings to choose the new chairman three times, inititially on Oct 8. The process culminated in a final meeting on Nov 11, which ironically concluded without revealing the name of the selected candidate. Although the committee has not officially disclosed the name of the new chair, Mr Kittiratt remains highly likely to be appointed as expected. There were three candidates for the position. The Finance Ministry proposed Mr Kittiratt, while the central bank nominated Kulit Sombatsiri, a former energy permanent secretary, and Surapon Nitikraipot, president of the Thammasat University Council and an independent director of PTT Plc. However, the selection process took another turn on Tuesday when reports indicated that the Council of State determined Mr Kittiratt is unqualified for the position due to a recent advisory role. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said on Tuesday that he is personally awaiting an official response letter from the Council of State regarding the interpretation of Mr Kittiratt's qualifications as a candidate for the chairman of the central bank's board of directors. It is expected that the Council of State will send the letter within the next one to two days, he said. "Assuming the qualifications are not met, discussions will need to take place, and a new candidate should be proposed promptly. I believe the selection committee is already prepared to proceed. As for whether an alternative candidate needs to be proposed, there are already regulations in place for this," he said. A source from the Finance Ministry who requested anonymity said the Finance Ministry is also waiting for an official response letter from the Council of State regarding the interpretation of Mr Kittiratt's qualifications, to determine whether he meets the requirements for the position of chairman of the central bank's board of directors. The ministry is also awaiting clarification on the nomination committee's approach, which must follow the legal procedures.Liam Manning was delighted to see a response from his Bristol City squad in their 1-1 draw with Sunderland , despite being left frustrated by the manner in which the Robins conceded a late equaliser at the Stadium of Light. The Reds were just moments away from securing an excellent and professional away win to bounce back from their defeat to Portsmouth at the weekend after Luke McNally had opened the scoring midway through the second half with a composed right-footed finish. However, Sunderland found a way to level things up in stoppage time as Patrick Roberts smashed past Max O'Leary from close range to ensure the two sides would have to settle for a point each in the North East on Tuesday night. The draw leaves City sitting 11th in the Championship table, five points adrift of Middlesbrough who occupy the final play-off place and nine points clear of Cardiff City and the relegation zone, although the Bluebirds have two games in hand. Although Manning admitted he was disappointed that his side let their lead slip in the closing exchanges, the City boss was quick to credit his backline in particular for stepping up and performing following the dismal defeat to Portsmouth at the weekend. "Obviously, the timing of it is what makes it feel a little bit like that [a loss]," the 39-year-old admitted post-match. "We were looking for a response from the weekend, I was quite honest at the weekend with everybody. We weren't good enough and we were looking for that response tonight. "Of course, it's hugely disappointing and frustrating to concede so late but ultimately the lads gave absolutely everything which like I said, I was quite critical of at the weekend, but tonight they did that and left everything out there. "The blocks, people putting their bodies on the line, Rob Dickie on his knees heading things clear in the box. I thought the lads gave absolutely everything so as disappointing as it is, it's not the worst point." City had chances to extend their advantage before the last-minute leveller with the likes of Anis Mehmeti and Sam Bell both being unable to test Anthony Patterson in the Black Cats' goal despite finding themselves in some reasonable positions. Those chances ultimately came back to bite the Robins who have now only won one of their five matches since the November international break, but Manning was reluctant to criticise his players who he felt gave their all for the travelling supporters. "They're the margins I think at the level," admitted the City head coach. "It's one of the toughest divisions in the world right and that's the bit, you wouldn't want to call any result in the Championship I don't think. "But they're the key bits. We're all in behaviourally, it's then just have you got the quality to kill the game off and Anis is improving. He's working on it but they are the moments that not just Anis but collectively we need to make sure we put the game to bed. "The change of shape at half-time helped, I thought we were able to press a little bit higher and obviously went ahead. Then it's a case of whether you can see it out in what is a really difficult place to come so like I say, it's a frustrating one." Fortunately, with the busy festive period looming on the Championship calendar, the Reds have a chance to get back to winning ways in just a few days when they welcome Queens Park Rangers to Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon in what is their penultimate game before Christmas.
Major credit card companies like Amex, Chase and Bank of America are now facing backlash for silently devaluing reward points and airline miles - an issue that that could aggrieve millions of Americans amid rising inflation. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has issued a warning to companies like American Express for potential violations of the law by obscuring terms and conditions for earning or retaining rewards. While President-elect Donald Trump is yet to nominate a candidate to run the agency for his second term at the White House, his biggest ally and Space X and Tesla CEO Elon Musk , who will run the Department of Government Efficiency with Vivek Ramaswamy, has proposed abolishing the CFPB. Furious Costco members threaten to quit over new Netflix-style security rules Chase Bank issues unwelcome three-day warning to customers with savings It is common practice for consumers to rack up credit card points and then redeem them for hotel stays, and flights or even get cashback. However, since the pandemic, companies like American Express and JP Morgan Chase have quietly and steadily devalued the points amid rising inflation that has affected cardholders' purchasing power. These companies have been accused of enticing customers with alleged perks and rewards but failing to deliver on these promises. Many consumers choose cards based on a rewards system, the CFPB said, which often includes cash, points, air miles as sign-up bonuses as well as rewards for certain kinds of spending. The CFPB found that in addition to devaluing these points, many companies hide the conditions for earning or retaining rewards. "Fine print disclaimers or vague terms buried in a contract may unlawfully conflict with prominent promotional language advertising the rewards consumers can earn," the CFPB said, adding: "Companies may also illegally rely on fine print to cancel valuable rewards that consumers have already earned." In a circular issued to law enforcement agencies, the CFPB has taken action against Bank of America and American Express for engaging in illegal practices related to this rewards system. The value of a point redeemed through online banking has been worth around one cent. However, one cent lost around 20 percent of its purchasing power amid inflation since 2018, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. According to the Wall Street Journal, this also means that the value of a point has fallen by the same amount. They reported that 50,000 points built up with a major credit card company in 2020 has fallen to 41,300 in October 2024. According to annual reports from Chase, Capital One, American Express, and more, cardholders earned more than $34 billion in points in 2023. If users redeem them directly through a bank's portal, the points start to devalue. However, if transferred into a frequent flier or other points program, the conversion rates change. Many airlines now use a dynamic pricing model to redeem these points, including Delta, United and American Airlines. In 2012, Bank of America had to pay $85 million to around 250,000 customers for "illegal card practices" and paid more than $100 million to customers last year. However, Reuters reported that industry groups have attacked the CFPB with a sharp rebuke, accusing them of sensationalizing it. The President of the American Bankers Association, Rob Nichols, told Reuters that such reward point complaints were "extraordinarily uncommon" and blamed political pressure from CFPB.University of Maine soccer forward Abby Kraemer became the school’s first All-American a year ago and this season became the first America East player in 25 years to receive a second All-American berth. Kraemer, an All-American second team pick last year, was chosen to the third team this season. She was one of just two players from a New England school to be chosen an All-American along with University of Connecticut junior forward Chioma Okafor, who was also a third team pick. There are four All-American teams. Kraemer, a native of Waterloo, Ontario, led the Black Bears in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. The Black Bears won the America East tournament for the second straight year and earned a berth to the NCAA tournament. She had three game-winning goals and was named to the All-America East first team and to the All-Tournament team. She had a goal and an assist in the 3-0 victory over New Hampshire in the America East championship game. She was also named to the All-Atlantic Region second team along with teammates Myla Schneider and Kristina Kelly. Lara Kirkby was a third team pick. Kraemer concluded her UMaine career with 31 goals and 12 assists for 74 points and 10 of her goals were game-winners. The All-Americans will be recognized at the United Soccer Coaches All-America ceremony and reception on Jan. 11 in Chicago in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches convention. Surprisingly, this much-maligned side dish has been a part of American tradition for centuries and holds endless possibilities beyond its original purpose, perfectly suited to be reinvented in unexpected ways. Despite its deep roots in Thanksgiving history, this dish remains one of the most polarizing items on the table today. What is this least popular Thanksgiving dish? Cranberry sauce. Cranberry sauce has been part of American cuisine for centuries. Native Americans used cranberries in cooking and medicine, and early European settlers followed suit, incorporating the berries into sauces and preserves. By the 19th century, cranberry sauce became a Thanksgiving tradition, although recipes varied by region. The introduction of canned cranberry sauce in the 20th century made it even more popular, cementing its spot as an expected accompaniment for Thanksgiving turkey on tables across the country. Those who do enjoy cranberry sauce probably have a strong opinion about what form is acceptable. Some people prefer canned cranberry sauce for its nostalgic jiggle, while others insist that fresh, homemade cranberry sauce is the only way to go. Homemade whole berry sauce is the top choice for many, with its texture and flavor offering something truly special. A 2021 survey by the grocery delivery service Instacart found that cranberry sauce is the least favorite Thanksgiving dish, with 29% of American adults saying they hate it and nearly 50% calling it disgusting. This makes cranberry sauce the most polarizing and the most disliked dish on the Thanksgiving table. Even though it ranks as the least favorite dish, omitting cranberry sauce from the holiday meal is still considered a bit of a Thanksgiving faux pas . Regardless of what kind of cranberry sauce graces the table, its lack of popularity guarantees leftovers. But do not let those leftovers go to waste; there are plenty of creative and delicious ways to use cranberry sauce beyond the Thanksgiving table. Leftover cranberry sauce? There is no need to despair. Here are some fun, delicious and inventive ways to give those leftovers a new purpose. Cranberry grilled cheese Cranberry sauce is the perfect addition to a grilled cheese sandwich. Layer sharp cheddar or brie cheese, turkey leftovers and a spoonful of cranberry sauce between two slices of sourdough bread. The tart cranberry cuts through the richness of the cheese for a perfectly balanced bite. To feed a crowd, consider making a casserole dish of turkey cranberry sliders with leftover sauce and turkey meat. Cranberry vinaigrette To make a simple salad dressing, grab a mason jar and add a tablespoon of leftover cranberry sauce. Pour in a splash of white balsamic vinegar and an equal portion of olive oil. Add pinches of fresh herbs, salt and pepper. Secure the lid, shake well and drizzle the zesty cranberry vinaigrette over an autumn salad with lettuce, gorgonzola cheese, pecans and dried cranberries. Cranberry BBQ sauce For an easy homemade barbecue sauce, mix leftover cranberry sauce with ketchup or chili sauce, a dash of hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce, and a bit of brown sugar. The result is a tangy barbecue sauce that pairs beautifully with cocktail meatballs , roasted chicken or pork chops. Guests will never guess that the base of your homemade barbecue sauce was the leftover cranberry sauce from Thanksgiving. Cranberry yogurt parfait For a quick breakfast or snack, layer cranberry sauce with vanilla Greek yogurt and granola for a simple yet elegant autumn parfait. The sweetness of the granola and the tanginess of the cranberry sauce make for a great flavor balance. For bonus points, add a drizzle of maple syrup and pecans. Cocktail mixer Yes, cranberry sauce can be used in cocktails. To make a festive drink, shake a generous spoonful of cranberry sauce with vodka, a splash of orange juice and a squeeze of simple syrup. Add ice and a fresh rosemary sprig, and the result is a tart, refreshing cocktail perfect for the holiday season. Cranberry sauce may never steal the spotlight during Thanksgiving dinner, where traditional dishes like mashed potatoes, buttery rolls and pies often take center stage. However, its creative uses can elevate it as a standout ingredient in the days that follow. As Thanksgiving cleanup commences and a bowl of leftover sauce remains, there is no need to worry. YouTube announced on Tuesday that its auto-dubbing feature, which allows creators to generate translated audio tracks for their videos, is now rolling out to hundreds of thousands more channels. YouTube first introduced its AI-powered auto-dubbing tool at Vidcon last year, which was only being tested with a limited group of creators. This tool could help make content on the platform more accessible and easier to understand for people all over the world. The auto-dubbing feature is now available to channels that are focused on informational content, such as videos that teach viewers how to cook or sew. It’ll expand availability to other types of content soon. To use the feature, simply upload a video as you normally would. YouTube will automatically detect the language and create dubbed versions in other languages. The tool supports English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. YouTube’s auto-dubbing utilizes Google’s Gemini capabilities to replicate human speech. However, the company cautions that the feature may not perform perfectly, as the technology is still in its early stages of development. “We’re working hard to make it as accurate as possible, but there might be times when the translation isn’t quite right, or the dubbed voice doesn’t accurately represent the original speaker. We really appreciate your patience and feedback as we continue to improve,” the company wrote in Tuesday’s blog post. The company also reminded creators that they can look forward to another upcoming update called “ Expressive Speech ,” which is designed to help replicate the creator’s tone, emotions, and even the ambiance of their surroundings.BMW praises Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology on social mediaCalifornia residents on edge as high surf and flooding threats persist on Christmas Eve

President Joe Biden signed a defense bill on Monday that prohibits coverage of transgender health care for children of military families while providing pay raises for junior enlisted service members and boosting military spending to $895 billion. The provision removing coverage for transgender children was slyly inserted by House Republicans and while Biden endorsed most of the bill’s provisions, he voiced strong objections to that contentious addition. "While I am pleased to support the critical objectives of the act, I note that certain provisions of the act raise concerns,” he said in a statement. Biden "strongly opposes" the part of the bill that limits transgender health care and said it will negatively affect the military’s recruiting abilities. “The provision targets a group based on that group’s gender identity and interferes with parents’ roles to determine the best care for their children,” he said. “This section undermines our all-volunteer military’s ability to recruit and retain the finest fighting force the world has ever known by denying health care coverage to thousands of our service members’ children. No service member should have to decide between their family’s health care access and their call to serve our Nation.” Biden’s statement comes as Republicans in Congress and President-elect Donald Trump have made transgender care a flashpoint in political rhetoric—and a target via legislation. “With the stroke of my pen on day one, we’re going to stop the transgender lunacy,” Trump said at a Turning Point USA rally on Sunday in Phoenix . “I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military and out of our elementary schools and middle schools and high schools.” x x YouTube Video After House Republicans snuck anti-transgender language into the sweeping defense bill earlier this month, Adam Smith, Democratic Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, balked at it. “Blanketly denying health care to people who need it—just because of a biased notion against transgender people—is wrong,” Smith said . “The inclusion of this harmful provision puts the lives of children at risk and may force thousands of service members to make the choice of continuing their military service or leaving to ensure their child can get the health care they need.” Republicans’ insertion of the anti-transgender provision into a must-pass defense bill was a calculated move. Biden had little choice but to sign, given its importance for military personnel and national security. While Biden stood firm in supporting the broader bill, the reality is that transgender Americans have lost significant rights. This is likely only the beginning of a political battle in which Democrats are losing ground to an incoming administration set on removing transgender rights and recognition. NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s recent dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his visit to Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral were not just exercises in policy and diplomacy. They were also prime trolling opportunities for Trump. Throughout his first term in the White House and during his campaign to return, Trump has spun out countless provocative, antagonizing and mocking statements. There were his belittling nicknames for political opponents, his impressions of other political figures and the plentiful memes he shared on social media. Now that's he's preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect's threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park." Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn't a trolling-free zone for Trump's adversaries. On Thanksgiving Day, Trump posted a movie clip from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” with President Joe Biden and other Democrats’ faces superimposed on the characters in a spoof of the turkey-carving scene. The video shows Trump appearing to explode out of the turkey in a swirl of purple sparks, with the former president stiffly dancing to one of his favorite songs, Village People’s “Y.M.C.A." In his most recent presidential campaign, Trump mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to call his GOP primary opponent by his real name and instead dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” He added, for good measure, in a post on his Truth Social network: “I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will.” As he campaigned against Biden, Trump taunted him in online posts and with comments and impressions at his rallies, deriding the president over his intellect, his walk, his golf game and even his beach body. After Vice President Kamala Harris took over Biden's spot as the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly suggested she never worked at McDonalds while in college. Trump, true to form, turned his mocking into a spectacle by appearing at a Pennsylvania McDonalds in October, when he manned the fries station and held an impromptu news conference from the restaurant drive-thru. Trump’s team thinks people should get a sense of humor. “President Trump is a master at messaging and he’s always relatable to the average person, whereas many media members take themselves too seriously and have no concept of anything else other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director. “President Trump will Make America Great Again and we are getting back to a sense of optimism after a tumultuous four years.” Though both the Biden and Harris campaigns created and shared memes and launched other stunts to respond to Trump's taunts, so far America’s neighbors to the north are not taking the bait. “I don’t think we should necessarily look on Truth Social for public policy,” Miller said. Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Trudeau and a close friend, said Trump brought up the 51st state line to Trudeau repeatedly during Trump’s first term in office. “Oh God,” Butts said Tuesday, “At least a half dozen times.” “This is who he is and what he does. He’s trying to destabilize everybody and make people anxious,” Butts said. “He’s trying to get people on the defensive and anxious and therefore willing to do things they wouldn’t otherwise entertain if they had their wits about them. I don’t know why anybody is surprised by it.” Gillies reported from Toronto. Associated Press writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report.

NoneBiden will decide on US Steel acquisition after influential panel fails to reach consensus WASHINGTON (AP) — A powerful government panel has failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of a nearly $15 billion proposed deal for Nippon Steel of Japan to purchase U.S. Steel. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States on Monday sent its long-awaited report to President Joe Biden, a longtime opponent of the deal. Some federal agencies represented on the panel were skeptical that allowing a Japanese company to buy an American-owned steelmaker would create national security risks. That's according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. Both Biden and President-elect Donald Trump opposed the merger and vowed to block it. Nippon Steel says it is confident the deal will go ahead. American said in an email that the problem was caused by an issue with a vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. Aviation analytics company Cirium said flights were delayed across American’s major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time. Nineteen flights were cancelled. In some ways, his victory marked a repudiation of President Joe Biden’s economic stewardship and a protest against inflation. It came despite low unemployment and steady growth under the Biden administration. What lies ahead for the economy under Trump?
