Thirty-three states have a list of "faults" to file as reasons for divorce. But in 17 states, married people only have the choice for a no-fault divorce to end their marriages. No-fault divorce laws have been available to married couples nationwide for over 50 years. A no-fault divorce law is a most common type of marriage split and does require any proof of wrongdoing. The filing spouse simply claims as grounds for the divorce that the couple cannot get along and the marriage has broken down, according to the Legal Information Institute. Every state across the country has adopted a no-fault divorce option which some believe is critical to supporting domestic abuse victims and important to stop family courts from being overwhelmed with complex divorce court cases. But the Associated Press reports that 33 states still have a list of approved "faults" to file as reasons for divorce, including adultery and a felony conviction. In 17 states, married people only have the option of choosing no-fault divorce to end their marriages. The push to amend no-fault divorce did not gain traction until the late 1990s, when concern pushed by former President George Bush’s administration over the nation’s divorce rate fueled a movement for states to adopt "covenant marriages." This choice didn’t replace the state’s no-fault divorce law but provided an option for couples that carried counseling requirements and strict exceptions for divorce, the AP reported. Louisiana was the first state to embrace covenant marriage options, but the effort stopped after Arizona and Arkansas followed suit. Multiple proposals have been introduced in conservative-led statehouses through the years but were stalled after they were filed. Oklahoma Republican Sen. Dusty Deevers introduced legislation in January that would have removed married couples from filing for divorce on the grounds of incompatibility. The AP reported that Deevers supported the bill after writing a piece declaring no-fault divorce was an "abolition of marital obligation." In South Carolina, two Republican lawmakers filed a bill last year that would have required both spouses to file for a no-fault divorce application rather than just one. A Republican legislator in South Dakota tried to remove irreconcilable differences as grounds for divorce since 2020. Meanwhile, several Democratic legislators say they are concerned about the future of no-fault divorce. The political party highlights the Supreme Court overturning the constitutional right to abortion in 2022 as an example of a long-accepted option that was revoked through a decades-long effort, according to the AP. Separately, some worry that President-elect Donald Trump may attempt to change the law, with warnings circulating on social media encouraging women who may be considering divorce to move forward with their plans. Björk is not only an Icelandic pop star, but also an avant-garde artist and climate activist. Her new sound installation blends the noises of endangered and extinct animals with her own voice, reading text she co-wrote alongside editor and photographer Aleph Molinari. "It is an emergency. The apocalypse has already happened. And how we will act now is essential," Björk recites over an array of ear-tingling wildlife noises that are sometimes natural, sometimes otherworldly. "In a pioneering sound strata of mutant peacocks, bees, and lemurs, biology will reassemble in new ways." A journey through different sonic worlds Created with IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique), a preeminent music and sound research institute based in Paris, the installation employs field recordings of animal sounds. Some of these were manipulated using artificial intelligence. "As you go up the escalator, you go through all these different sonic worlds," said IRCAM sound artist Robin Meier Wiratunga , who collaborated with Björk on the installation. "We have orangutans, mosquitoes, beluga whales, and then when you reach the top floor, the climactic musical event, which we lovingly call the 'Dolphin Disco.'" Capturing the sounds of lost species We don't know for sure what sounds many extinct animals made. University of Texas paleontologist Julia Clarke , who studies the sounds of extinct animals, said we can glean clues by studying sound-making in living species and the preserved soft tissues, skeletons and fossils of extinct ones. "We might look at the sound-producing structures, like vibratory vocal cords," Clarke said. "We might look at the structures that are rubbed together or banged together." Up to one million plant and animal species are facing extinction due to human activity including climate change, pollution and habitat loss, according to a 2019 global report on biodiversity. "What we've noticed in mass extinction is really the absence of sound," Clarke said. But she added that Nature Manifesto isn't only highlighting this catastrophic loss. It also suggests if we stop destroying the planet, that species might continue to evolve. "It's challenging us to think about in visceral ways what a very different and very acoustically diverse future might sound like," she said. "I hope it is that acoustically diverse." Björk the climate activist Björk's passion for environmental stewardship runs deep. Some of her albums touch upon the natural world and its complex relationship to technology, such as Biophilia (2011) and Fossora (2022). She also advocates strongly for ecological causes, including her ongoing fight against intensive fish farming in her native Iceland. A recently discovered butterfly species — Pterourus bjorkae — was recently named in her honor. The singer, visual artist and activist Anohni, who is exhibiting a companion video piece alongside Nature Manifesto at Centre Pompidou, said she and Björk often talk about climate issues. "We've spoken a lot about environment over the years, just as artists between each other, trying to understand our right-size relationship to this unfolding crisis and the different ways that we might utilize our agency as artists," she said. Following the death of former president Jimmy Carter on Sunday, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank released a statement expressing his heartfelt condolences to the Carter family. Blank called Carter a friend and role model. “I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend and role model, President Jimmy Carter,” Blank wrote. “He was a great American, a proud Georgian and an inspirational global humanitarian. “He lived his life with great civic responsibility and took it upon himself to be the change he wished to see amongst others. On behalf of my family and our family of businesses, we send a heartfelt message of condolence to his loved ones.” Carter, who won the 1976 presidential election, entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia in February 2023 after a series of hospital stays. His grandson, Jason Carter, spoke out at the time about the blessing living so long was. “Not everybody gets 100 years on this earth, and when somebody does, and when they use that time to do so much good for so many people, it’s worth celebrating,” Jason Carter, chair of The Carter Center governing board, said in an interview, per the Associated Press . “These last few months, 19 months, now that he’s been in hospice, it’s been a chance for our family to reflect and then for the rest of the country and the world to really reflect on him. FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — Fishers High School is coming off a 4A state championship in boys basketball and a sectional championship in football, but they hung a different banner in their gymnasium on Tuesday morning. The Fishers students won the coveted The Zone Banner. The Zone Banner, presented by Old National Bank, Crew Carwash, and Bailey & Wood Mortgage Lenders, is awarded to the best student section in central Indiana during the high school football season, as decided by The Zone Banner Committee. News 8 sports director Anthony Calhoun presented the most coveted spirit award in the state to a pep rally full of Fishers student on Tuesday morning. The students “we got the banner” and showed once again why they were chosen as the best student section in central Indiana this season. This is kids taking pride in their school. This is kids showing character by showing up to games supporting their teammates and their colleagues. And then this is building tradition. You heard Sully say it on Friday. They wanted to set a precedent for what it means to be a Fishers Tiger, and they did that.” Fishers won The Zone Banner for their first time in school history this year.
