An ISA can be a good way to generate some passive income in the short term, by investing in dividend shares. There is no shortage of options on the London market at the moment that offer the potential for juicy earnings. But as an investor who believes in a , I also think an ISA can be helpful when it comes to . To keep things simple, let’s say I currently have a £20k and plan to retire in 30 years. Over £10,000 a year, every year – for doing nothing Imagine I compound that at a rate of 7% annually over 30 years. That is well above the average yield for shares, but I think it is achievable in the current market. That alone would mean that, three decades from now, I would have a portfolio worth a little over £162k. At a yield of 7%, that ought to earn me £11,363 in passive income. If I simply take the dividends at that point and do not touch the capital, I could hopefully earn that amount every year. I say “ ” because dividends are never guaranteed. I may suffer a cut from some shares I own, meaning I earn less. But the opposite is also true. I may earn more each year, if shares I own such as continue their . Setting a strategy for a five-figure annual passive income So, how am I going about this? The reality sounds, perhaps, disappointingly unglamorous. I aim to find companies that offer unique solutions in large, enduring markets. I look for firms generating far more cash than they need to keep their business ticking over. I also consider the share price and what it means for valuation, as smart investors do not overpay even for excellent businesses. By building a diversified portfolio in my ISA of such shares (diversification matters because even great businesses can disappoint), I aim to build growing passive income streams over time. Putting the theory into practice So much for the concept. What about the reality? Let me illustrate by discussing one FTSE 100 share I own, . Yes, it has a stellar yield well in excess of my 7% example (which, in fairness, is close to double the average FTSE 100 yield at the moment). Currently, it stands at 9.4%. And yes, although it plans to reduce the level of annual growth in dividend per share, the company is still targeting an each year. In fact, that has happened every year bar one since the financial crisis. At that point, the payout was cut. I see a risk of that happening again if the economy suddenly enters a very turbulent period, if policyholders take more money out than they put in. But remember – my approach to investing is based on the long-term outlook. I expect Legal & General to encounter turbulence from time to time, as befits a company that is almost 190 years old. The CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Food Services Association, Ian Tostenson, said the shows that ended Sunday had an effect that went far beyond other concert or sporting events in the city. Tostenson said Monday that his group estimates there was a $25 million boost for Metro Vancouver’s establishments for each of the three show days. In comparison, a sold-out, highly anticipated Vancouver Canucks playoff game brings an estimated $3 million a day in economic impact, Tostenson said. “In the context of comparing to anything else, it’s not even believable almost — it’s such a huge impact,” Tostenson said. “I was out a little bit on Friday and Saturday, and every place I went to was absolutely lined up and packed.” Tostenson said the concerts rivalled the Olympics in drawing fans from regions far beyond what a typical playoff hockey game would, and while it is difficult to compare the 2010 Winter Games to the Taylor Swift weekend, the events were in the same magnitude in daily impact on restaurants. “The financial impact of the Olympics was massive, (but) it was spread out over a couple weeks in different venues and stuff,” he said. “So, you didn't sort of feel this concentration that you saw with Taylor Swift.” Tostenson also said Swifties bumped up business across Metro Vancouver all weekend, with one major restaurant owner with multiple locations reporting full capacity not just at its downtown location but also in North Vancouver and Olympic Village. He credits the festive mood brought by fans that had an emotional effect on people in general, which in turn has a major impact on restaurants, an industry built largely on discretionary spending. People consume more when the mood is right, he said. “From a financial point of view, the Olympics probably had a bigger impact,” Tostenson said. “But ... I'm going to venture to estimate that this, on a daily basis compared to the Olympics, was stronger.” Telecommunications giant Rogers said data used during the last show was enough to stream Swift's entire music catalogue 9,450 times. It said in a statement that fans on the company's network set a Canadian record when they used more than 11 terabytes of mobile data in just a few hours at BC Place. The company's chief technology officer Mark Kennedy said Monday that is the equivalent of uploading 307,000 photos and 2,180 hours of video streaming. The previous record was set Nov. 21, when fans at Swift's concert in Toronto used 7.4 terabytes of data on the Rogers network. Music industry publication Pollstar also said Monday that Swift's 149-show worldwide tour brought in revenue of US$2.2 billion in its 20-month run. Bills' letdowns on defense, special teams and clock management in loss to Rams are all too familiar
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will not play Sunday and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the lingering discomfort is a concern. Purdy sat out Friday after he participated in the start of Thursday's practice with the 49ers, then retreated indoors for what Shanahan said was a treatment session. Brandon Allen, 32, will start in Purdy's place, and the 49ers are also without defensive end Nick Bosa (oblique). Shanahan said players believe in Allen, even if he's an unknown. "Outside of here people haven't seen a lot of Brandon. But it's his second year (with the 49ers)," Shanahan said. "Obviously guys want Brock up, but guys are excited to see Brandon play." Shanahan said they are "a little surprised" Purdy experienced tightness and discomfort in his shoulder after an MRI exam on Monday that showed no long-term cause for concern. "The way it responded this week, it's really up in the air for next week," Shanahan said of Purdy. Allen is familiar to Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who was an assistant coach with the Rams during Allen's two-year run in Los Angeles. Allen broke into the NFL in 2016 with the Jaguars and is 2-7 in nine career starts. He went 1-2 with the Broncos in 2019 and 1-5 in six starts over two years with the Bengals in 2020 and ‘21. Shanahan said Allen's confidence grew throughout the week and he doesn't anticipate a major change in how he calls the offense. Left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) also missed practice for the third consecutive day. Without disclosing the nature of the ailment to Purdy's throwing shoulder, general manager John Lynch confirmed Friday an MRI exam took place to determine the severity of any injury. Allen worked with the first team most of Thursday and Friday with Joshua Dobbs also taking snaps. Lynch described Purdy's status for the 49ers (5-5) this week as "tenuous." "Hopefully, he makes progress, and we can have a shot at this weekend, but we'll see," Lynch said in an interview with KNBR in San Francisco. "I think it's tenuous." When Purdy was on the field this week, he primarily worked on the side in position-specific drills with QB coach Brian Griese. Williams played through an ankle injury last week after being listed as questionable but exited the stadium with an exaggerated limp on Sunday. Run game coordinator Chris Foerster said the 49ers aren't where they want to be at 5-5 because they haven't won close games, not because of injuries. "Seven games left is like an eternity," Foerster said. "So much can happen. Do the math. What was our record last year? It was 12-5. I was on a 13-win team that was nowhere near as good as the team last year." He went on to say that he would like to finish his career in Cleveland. “I would say it’s important. I started here. I’d like to finish here. Cleveland just means a lot to me. Everything we’ve been through, ups and downs, but I’m proud to be drafted here,” he added. Of course, while the Browns have struggled, there is more to the decision that whether the team wins. Chubb has placed down roots in Cleveland, building friendships and a level of comfort in the city. However, the single most important statistic is his yards per carry average. Unless something changes, Chubb’s 6.1 yards per carry average from 2023 and 5.0+ bar in his career will tower over his production this season. Heading into Week 15, Chubb has earned 3.1 yards per carry this season. For older running backs, such a decline with no new deal could spell the end of Chubb’s time with the Browns.
