SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Even when Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets some praise, it's usually a backhanded compliment. They say he's a good game manager and stays within himself, or that he doesn't try to do too much. They mention he might not be flashy, but he gives the team a chance to win. And here's the thing about Penn State since Allar stepped under center: The Nittany Lions have won games. A lot of them. Sometimes that's hard to remember considering the lukewarm reception he often gets from fans. “I get it — we have a really passionate fan base and they're a huge part of our success,” Allar said Sunday at College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day. “For us, we always want to go out there every drive and end with a touchdown, so when we don't do that, there's nobody more frustrated than us.” The polarizing Allar is having a solid season by just about any standard, completing more than 68% of his passes for 3,021 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions to a 12-2 record and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl for Tuesday's game against No. 3 seed Boise State. But in a college football world filled with high-scoring, explosive offenses, Allar's no-frills performances often are the object of ire. The Penn State offense is a run-first bunch , led by the talented combo of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. “If we had a nickel for every time there was a Monday morning quarterback saying some BS stuff, we'd all be pretty rich,” offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki said. “I think part of being a quarterback, especially at Penn State but really anywhere, is how you respond to and manage criticism.” The 20-year-old Allar has made strides in that department after a trying 2023 season that finished with a 10-3 record. He says that's largely because once fall camp started back in August, he logged off the social media platform X. Allar said negative online experiences wore on him last year, and his phone number was leaked a few times, which added to the stress. He finally realized that controlling outside narratives was impossible, so the best course of action was to eliminate a needless distraction. “I’ve been more mentally free, as much as that sounds crazy,” Allar said. “I think that’s been a huge difference for me this year.” The biggest criticism of Allar — and really Penn State as a whole during the 11-year James Franklin era — is that he isn't capable of winning the big games. He's 0-2 against rival Ohio State and threw a late interception against Oregon in the Big Ten title game earlier this month, which sealed the Ducks' 45-37 victory . He wasn't great in the CFP's first round, either, completing just 13 of 22 passes for 127 yards as Penn State muscled past SMU 38-10 on a cold, blustery day to advance to the Fiesta Bowl. But the quarterback is confident a better performance — aided by a game that will be played in comfortable temperatures in a domed stadium — is coming. “For me, I just have to execute those (easy) throws early in the game and get our guys into rhythm,” Allar said. “Get them involved early as much as I can and that allows us to stay on the field longer, call more plays and open up our offense more. That will help us a ton, building the momentum throughout the game.” Allar might be a favorite punching bag for a section of the Penn State fan base, but that's not the case in his own locker room. Star tight end Tyler Warren praised his quarterback's ability to avoid sacks, saying that the 6-foot-5, 238-pounder brings a toughness that resonates with teammates. “He’s a football player,” Warren said. “He plays quarterback, but when you watch him play and the energy he brings and the way he runs the ball, he’s just a football player and that fires up our offense.” Now Allar and Penn State have a chance to silence critics who say that the Nittany Lions don't show up in big games. Not that he's worried about what other people think. “I think it's a skill at the end of the day — blocking out the outside noise," Allar said. "Focusing on you and the process and being honest with yourself, both good and bad.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here . Kalpana Soren: From Homemaker to Powerful Force in JMMAs I mentioned last week, our Thanksgiving newspaper this year was produced in advance so that it could arrive in customers’ mailboxes on Wednesday. Thursday was a postal holiday, so we had to choose between Wednesday and Friday delivery. Because the early delivery meant early deadlines, we chose a feature story about charity fundraising by Beaches Restaurant & Bar for the front page. I thought it was a perfect choice for a Thanksgiving Day paper. Holidays are good days for good news. As our plans for that newspaper came together, I wondered what previous Columbian Thanksgiving papers were like, so I went back to our microfilm, which is available to the public (for a fee) at newspapers.com . I looked first at the Nov. 25, 2004, edition and was struck by some of the similarities between the news then and the news today. Our top story was about an election recount in the governor’s race. After a statewide machine recount of the ballots, Republican Dino Rossi led Democrat Christine O. Gregoire by only 42 votes. (Gregoire was named the winner after a hand recount was conducted.) This year, of course, we are looking at recounts in the 18th District Senate and Clark County Council Position 4 races. Inside, I found a story about how Vladimir Putin’s Russia was trying to take over Ukraine by rigging an election and installing pro-Kremlin leadership. In the local news section, Ridgefield school administrators were talking about overcrowded facilities and trying to get voters to pass a bond to fund construction. Again, that story persists. I did spot this major difference: In 2004, Video Only advertised 50-inch flat panel TVs for $5,999. In this year’s ad, they are priced as low as $219. Thanksgiving 2014 Next I skipped ahead to 2014. The first thing that caught my eye was a front-page story about holiday shopping that seemed like it could have been written this year. Here’s how it started: “Falling gas prices. Soaring stock market. Unemployment at a six-year low. All signs point to a successful holiday shopping season. Despite the economic tail winds, though, retailers are finding themselves having to work to get shoppers into stores.” Inside, there was a story about how University of Washington researchers were suggesting more use of naloxone to fight the state’s growing epidemic opioid addiction. According to that story, doctors were hesitant to prescribe it. A decade later, it’s available without a prescription and is even found in local vending machines. Another story caught my eye that seemed similar to today: Puget Sound’s orcas were struggling, despite a decade of federal protection. Thanksgiving 1924 By now I had found enough similarities with today’s news. So I went back 100 years. Newspapers were different in those days. The Wednesday Nov. 26 edition (there was no Thanksgiving paper) contained 21 front-page stories and a political cartoon. My favorite was headlined “She Never Knew Her Husband’s Business; Now He’s Dead Bandit.” It started like this: “‘He was just a good, sympathetic pal. He never confided in me. When I would ask him questions about his business affairs he would just say, “You’re young, dear, and it would only worry you.” How I wish now that he had told me how matters really were.’ “In these few words, Mrs. I.C. Peterson, 20 and pretty, speaking in a voice whose hardened, weary tone betrayed the intense strain under which she was laboring, summed up the history of her 11-weeks marriage to Karl Peterson, 36, internationally known convict, who was killed by a Seattle detective in the Puget Sound city Monday after a running gun fight.” Now that’s a story!

Never-give-up Glens Falls comes up just short in Class B state football semifinal
Hardly any PM would have done so much for J&K: Omar Abdullah praises Manmohan Singh for his contributionsAs the Philadelphia Eagles prepared to take the ball in the fourth quarter, offensive linemen were buzzing. “We got 48 more yards,” left guard Landon Dickerson told left tackle Jordan Mailata. The Eagles led the Dallas Cowboys by 27 points. Forty-eight yards until what, Mailata asked? “To 2K, you big dummy,” Mailata recalled Dickerson’s response. Running back Saquon Barkley was on the cusp of becoming the ninth player in NFL history to . Barkley heard the chatter as right tackle Lane Johnson told fellow linemen “this mother-F’er needs this to get it” and “let’s go get it,” Barkley said. Philadelphia then handed the ball to its marquee 2024 offseason signing on six straight plays. He ripped off six yards, then 11, then three, then nine. And then, with a 23-yard burst up the left sideline, Barkley surpassed 2,000 rushing yards on the season and hit 2,005. Head coach Nick Sirianni called a timeout to pull Barkley from the game. The Eagles celebrated. “I’m not going to lie, just being a fan of the game and the running back position, to reach a milestone and put myself up there with eight other backs that I respect, and some of them I grew up watching, definitely means a lot,” Barkley said after the . “You can’t be great without the greatness of others, and I’m just happy I was able to be a part of the team and be able to reach a milestone like that.” On Sunday, as the Eagles clinched the NFC East, the individual goals of Barkley and team goals of the Eagles largely aligned. Philadelphia needed this win, its 13th of the season, to lock in a home playoff game. Barkley’s production – which included 137 yards after halftime – helped secure the decision. But as Philadelphia looks to its regular-season finale, the team’s next set of goals poses a dilemma. Another rushing record, even more historic, is in reach. And yet: What if Barkley gets hurt chasing it in a game that won’t impact the Eagles’ playoff seeding? When the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday evening, the Eagles locked in the No. 2 seed in the NFC. No longer will next week impact their postseason standing. Sirianni has a decision to make as he weighs risks and rewards. Sunday afternoon, he punted it. “We’ll always do what’s best for these guys, and that could mean playing them, that could mean resting them,” Sirianni said before the Vikings’ win changed the calculus. “I’ve got to think about that. Looking forward to going out on the field and playing catch with my kids after this, though. “And then I’ll think about that later.” In 1984, Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson set the single-season rushing record with 2,105 yards. Forty years later, no one has passed him. With 101 yards next week, Barkley would hit 2,106 and break the longstanding pacecar. Even more poetically, he would do so against the team that drafted him then let him walk in free agency nine months ago. In the Eagles and Giants’ first meeting this year, . Breaking Dickerson’s record tempts the second overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He also understands how chasing it further could jeopardize Philadelphia’s postseason goals. “The way I look at it, if it's in God's plan, then it is,” Barkley said. “I'm not overly trying to go get it. I’m not scared of it. I would love to. But at the end of the day, also, we’ve got bigger things that we're focusing on. “I didn't come here and sign here just to rush for 2,000 or break a record. I want to do something special, meaning special with the team.” Barkley is the latest running back, but not the first, to enter the final week of the regular-season with a real chance to pass Dickerson. Adrian Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards with the Minnesota Vikings in 2012, but his helped the Vikings clinch a wildcard spot. Jamal Lewis despite the Baltimore Ravens clinching the AFC North earlier that day. His 114 yards entered him into the 2,000-yard club at 2,066 but not into the single-season recordholder spot. The closest rusher of the last decade was Derrick Henry in 2020, when he powered for 2,027 yards for the Tennessee Titans. Henry collected a whopping 250 of those in the regular-season finale win that clinched the Titans’ AFC South title. He didn’t reach Dickerson. So Sirianni’s most recent parallel to consider in his decision dates back more than two decades. His decision to keep Barkley in long enough to hit 2,000 yards on Sunday but no longer may indicate his tolerance threshold for the individual record. “I'll do what I think is necessary and best for the team to put ourselves in that position, but I also am very sensitive to records and all the things there,” Sirianni said. “So, we'll see how it goes.” The Eagles locker room was split. Barkley’s right tackle understands how rare it is to play with the rushing champion. When Johnson blocked for the 2013 title holder his rookie year, he figured such greatness was par for the course. Then more than a decade passed before he could reclaim that achievement. Also notable: LeSean McCoy led the league with 1,607 rushing yards that season. He was nearly 500 yards removed from the history books. So Johnson celebrated Barkley crossing the 2,000-yard mark as “special.” That didn’t sway his opinion on Barkley playing a playoff-meaningless game to catch Dickerson. “I mean, Eric Dickerson’s record was 16 games, so if it was 17 games, it’s not going to make sense anyways,” Johnson said. “Eric Dickerson is who he is. Saquon is who he is. We just wanted to get to 2,000. We were fine with that. “Better be safe than sorry.” Barkley disputed the asterisk with still broader historical context, noting that yes, he has a 17th regular-season game his record-setting predecessors did not – but also he’s not the first to benefit from a schedule expansion. Of the eight prior 2,000-yard rushers, seven played 16 games. O.J. Simpson rushed for 2,003 yards in 1973 with just 14 on his slate. Dickerson crossed the 2,000-yard threshold in his 15th game and then hit 2,105 after 98 more in try 16. “I know we don't really speak about that, but in reality, [Simpson] rushed for 2,000 in 14 games, [Dickerson], it took him 15,” Barkley said. “So if anything, it's like, why are we even having the conversation? Or if you're trying to get [Dickerson]'s record, if that's the conversation, it should be, ‘You’ve got to do it in 14.’ “The way football is right now, it's kind of hard to rush for 2,000 yards in 14 games. So, whether it's 16, whether it's 17, it's a feat that you can never take away from what I was able to do with the O-line. And only eight other players did it, so it's a special moment.” Teammates agreed. Receiver A.J. Brown told Barkley to “get it done but be safe” as he returned to the field to cross the plateau against the Cowboys, Brown also eager to join in updating the history books. “I’d like to say when I'm talking to my kids, ‘Oh I was a part of Saquon’s team when he did that,’” Brown said. “I want to be a part of it.” Cornerback Darius Slay said he’d “never witnessed nobody getting 2,000 yards before” and that he believed Barkley could have passed Dickerson on Sunday if he played the remainder of the fourth quarter. When asked by the Los Angeles Times last week if he wanted Barkley to pass his record, and added, “I don’t think he’ll break it.” That motivated Slay’s encouragement of Barkley, too. “Of course we need him way bigger than the record,” Slay said. “But I would love for him to have the record, especially after what Dickerson said – that was not cool.” Barkley said he didn’t see the comments “as a shot” or “throwing shade” because: “You shouldn’t want me to break your record.” The bigger question will be how strongly Sirianni feels about the risk and reward as the Eagles hope to return to the Super Bowl two years after their last appearance, and win it seven years after their last title. Barkley understands how difficult that postseason road is after playing with a Giants team that won fewer than seven games five of his six years. He played in just two playoff games, winning one, in six years. that division champions receive hats and T-shirts to celebrate. He wants to learn how to celebrate a Super Bowl championship, too. His best career season stands independent of his finale participation. “I came here to do something special, and obviously breaking the record is special,” Barkley said. “But I want a banner up there. I think we all do. But we gave ourselves a chance with that and clinched the playoffs before and now with the division. “Now it's up to Nick, and we’ll see where his mindset is.”

Asia-Pacific markets are set to open lower on the penultimate trading day of 2024Ingo Rademacher is trying to take ABC back to court over his 2021 firing from General Hospital , and he’s bringing former co-star Steve Burton into it. Rademacher, who played Jasper “Jax” Jacks on the daytime drama for 25 years on and off, was fired in 2021 when he refused to follow the show’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate. He sued the soap later that year claiming that he was fired because of his political views and not just the mandate. “I am entitled to a religious exemption against mandatory vaccination for COVID-19 on the basis of my deeply and sincerely held moral belief that my body is endowed by my creator with natural processes to protect me and that its natural integrity cannot ethically be violated by the administration of artificially created copies of genetic material, foreign to nature and experimental,” the actor wrote in an e-mail to Disney HR before his firing, according to Variety . Rademacher lost the initial suit in 2023 when a judge found that because General Hospital also fired Burton, who plays Jason Morgan in the series, this proved the decision was about the health mandate. Rademacher is resurrecting the suit now because Burton was rehired on the series in January 2024. Jason made his official reappearance in March of that year. In Radaemacher’s motion for a new trial, obtained by InTouch , his lawyer argues, “ABC’s re-hiring of Mr. Burton undermines its argument that Ingo’s political beliefs did not play any role in its decision to fire him—to ‘recast’ his role—in 2021...Judge Goorvitch credited ABC’s evidence that the political animus that the General Hospital producers showed toward Ingo was irrelevant because, like other people, including GH actor Steve Burton, it simply could not accommodate Ingo’s objection to COVID-19 vaccination and fired him only for that reason. “That argument was always specious. But it carries even less weight now, given the newly discovered evidence that ABC re-hired [Steve] for General Hospital but did not re-hire Ingo,” his lawyer continued. The documents also claim that GH will never rehire Rademacher because of his outspoken support for Donald Trump during the 2020 election. He hopes to get a new trial and a jury to evaluate his wrongful termination claim. A judgment on the motion is expected in the new year. Rademacher has opened up about how being let go from the show has affected him, sharing on Instagram in November 2023 that he’s been struggling with mental health issues since leaving the series. “To be completely honest, for the first time in my life, I’ve been faced with some mental health struggles. That’s not something I’ve ever had to face before. I’m a lot better now, but the first year was rough,” he said at the time . “On top of that, I really identified as my character on General Hospital for decades, and I could’ve been there and would’ve been there for many more decades to come,” he continued. “This isn’t a boo-hoo me post, it’s just honest. It’s where I’m at.” More Headlines:Crypto industry leaders and advocates welcomed the potential change after a grueling four-year war with Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler. Gensler, who resigned last month, badgered crypto companies with multiple lawsuits and controversial enforcement actions. He routinely allied with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on crypto skepticism and regulatory issues. Crypto enthusiasts accused Gensler of launching “Operation Chokepoint 2.0,” a campaign using litigation to achieve what could not be accomplished through regulation or legislation. The effort was modeled after the Obama-era Operation Chokepoint, which targeted gun dealers, payday lenders and sex workers. “Gensler’s SEC was too quick to condemn new technology and financial products ... and unwilling to offer simple guidance that would have given more clarity to consumers and investors,” said Yaël Ossowski, deputy director at the Consumer Choice Center and a fellow at the Bitcoin Policy Institute. The SEC’s version of Operation Chokehold encountered legal headaches almost immediately. A federal judge dismissed Gensler’s attempt to classify Ripple’s XRP token as a security and denied the SEC’s appeal. A separate panel of judges criticized the SEC for its capricious and inconsistent policy of denying Grayscale’s proposed Bitcoin exchange-traded program after previously approving two others. Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts A significant setback occurred in 2023 when a federal judge threatened to sanction SEC attorneys for “materially false and misleading representations” in a suit against Wyoming-based crypto firm Digital Licensing Inc., also known as DEBT BOX. The SEC later dropped the suit. Gensler refused to back down on crypto enforcement. Less than two weeks after his resignation, the SEC requested that a federal judge not dismiss its suit against Binance and 10 other crypto asset issuers. “The issuers of the Ten Crypto Assets and Defendants treated the offer and sale of these assets as investments whose success inured to the investors’ financial benefit — and publicly promoted them as such,” SEC attorneys alleged in court documents. Trump has nominated former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins as Gensler’s replacement, pending approval from the Senate. He named entrepreneur David Sacks as his White House AI and Crypto Czar to work on the crypto legal framework. Both are crypto supporters. Atkins has been a policy adviser to The Digital Chamber, a pro-crypto advocacy group. Sacks invested in crypto companies through his Craft Ventures fund. Noted crypto and financial tech advocate Jimmie Lenz of Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering said the appointments signal Trump is serious about advancing America’s tech role. “The administration is likely to support innovation, thus new technologies and new ideas are likely to be encouraged,” he said. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse praised the pair, calling them a Dream team. He said Atkins would bring common sense policy to the SEC. As for Sacks, Garlinghouse said he would promote pro-innovation plans. This has alarmed Warren, who is expected to be the top Democrat on the Banking Committee. She expressed concern over Atkins, calling him a Wall Street lobbyist who opposed “fines against the giant corporations that defrauded investors” during the 2009 financial crisis. The potential new regulatory environment has Ossowski excited about the future of Bitcoin and other crypto assets. “If the U.S. truly becomes a Bitcoin and crypto powerhouse with a more receptive administration, it will be a beacon to the rest of the world that Bitcoin and its crypto-offspring are vital tools for democratizing financial inclusion and consumer innovation for the future,” he said. Eric Trump framed it in grander terms: Donald Trump “is going to make America the Bitcoin capital of the world,” he said.
Lawmakers are concerned about background checks of Trump's Cabinet picks as red flags surfaceThe local Cook Islands community’s sincere welcome, music, drumming and refreshments were very much appreciated. Unfortunately, the consultation had its fair share of logistical hiccups, with an event originally advertised to be from 5pm – 8pm, ending up being 6.45pm to well after 11pm. The unexpected change to the start time, the Prime Minister’s late arrival (due to peak hour traffic) and drawn-out schedule tested patience, with at least half (if not more) of the attendees leaving before the end of the presentation. It’s tough when a meeting meant to engage and inform, ends up being a test of endurance. My son, Jonny, noted that the Prime Minister’s three pillars (church, government, traditional leaders) pretty much said the same thing; i.e. we need to diversify, get rich, have new job opportunities, and assist the transition to clean energy. However, we don’t have enough locals to fill jobs already and people are finding other ways to diversify in business and career paths. As for the clean energy transition – if life is lost and ecosystems destroyed, can anyone claim this is clean energy? The PM Mark Brown mentioned that technology is advancing, so the metals may not be needed in the future, which is why he wants to harvest the nodules while they’re still valuable. In Maori, he concluded that we can choose to take this opportunity... or miss out. This FOMO (fear of missing out) thinking causes panic, less care and patience for the research process, and collaborative consultation over the results. Recently I was at a Blue Planet Alliance (BPA) forum with Government representatives. BPA’s aim is 100 per cent clean energy (for electricity) by 2045. They made it clear that they do not believe Deep Sea Mining (DSM) is needed for the clean energy transition. My son found the science portion interesting, but when Te Ipukarea’s director was mentioned, he jumped up to question why John Parianos of Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority hadn’t reflected TIS’s stance against DSM in his talk. John replied that TIS is not against DSM, but for getting it done properly. The following excerpts from director Alanna Smith, speaking during the WISE expedition, I trust clarifies TIS’s position: “Supporting deep ocean research does not mean supporting deep sea mining. It is important to have trained observers onboard to ensure transparency, making sure that the data being collected is shared, but also ensuring that there is good science and good questions ... for example a mining company’s research could be sided towards mineral quality and where the nodules are most dense .... having little attention to what life is in these spaces ... To reiterate, participation on this expedition does not mean support for DSM.” The 45 minutes (approx.) Q&A had only one question relating to the environment. After seeing the slides and listening to a recording of the night, I would say this is because risks to the environment were just glanced over, not explained, so people still don’t know enough to form questions. My son posed a pointed question about environmental impact – One of the slides shows an approximation of the effect three operations over thirty years would have (approximately 1.2 per cent of the EEZ). Is there a reality where enough operations could, over one generation (30 years) destroy the entire EEZ? John Parianos replied that hypothetically yes, which is why we need to get things right to have only an acceptable level of damage (Paraphrased). Clearly both sides agree there will be long-term implications for ecosystems. As one attendee said, in Maori, at the end of the night ... fulfil your dream. If it works out well, it’s ours. If it turns bad, it’s yours. But it isn’t that simple, if for example, fish stocks are depleted because of linked ecosystems in the chain being destroyed, then everyone who relies on fish suffers. The recounting from family is not just a summary of events, but a reflection on the need for better planning, engagement, and transparency. When these ‘consultations’ are about such a significant and potentially life changing move, why have the NGOs not been included? It is at best a road show, at worst a propaganda tour, but without all parties present, it is not a consultation. E te au tangata Kuki Airani, akamanako o’onu. Consider what level of damage to our ocean is acceptable. Our answers will shape our future, our way of life and our Marae Moana.

Egypt has tested a new 10-kilometre (6.2-mile) extension to the Suez Canal as it tries to minimise the impact of currents on shipping and increase the key waterway's capacity. India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for Two ships used the new extension on Saturday, a statement from the Suez Canal Authority said. Authority chief Osama Rabie said the development in the canal's southern region will "enhance navigational safety and reduce the effects of water and air currents on passing ships".
