The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It’s a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It’s all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person’s response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn’t happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It’s not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn’t respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I’m hoping it’s slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects. Figuring out what works typically requires a doctor trained to treat obesity, Saunders noted. “Obesity is such a complex disease that really needs to be treated very comprehensively,” she said. “If what we’re prescribing doesn’t work, we always have a backup plan.” ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group. President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday vowed to name a new prime minister in the coming days to prevent France from sliding deeper into political turmoil, rejecting growing pressure from the opposition to resign. They picked up where they left off before the break for international duty by thanks to goals from Mateo Retegui, Ederson and Ademola Lookman. Matteo Cancellieri had managed to get Parma back into it at the dawn of the second half, but La Dea are temporarily top of the table. “It is undoubtedly a positive run and the performance in the first half was excellent too, we could perhaps have scored more goals. The second half started with their goal, that gave Parma a push, but it didn’t last long and we took control again before scoring the third goal,” “You cannot convert every chance, but a team that creates this much will have better odds of winning.” It wasn’t entirely a joyful evening for Gasperini, because he was sent off from the touchline for two yellow cards in quick succession and had to watch the last half-hour from the stands. “Parma had just got back into a game that was absolutely closed and had a boost of energy, I saw a foul and was booked for my protest, that’s fine. Then the fourth official spent five minutes staring at me, I told him to pay attention to the match and not to me, he wanted to be the protagonist and the referee gave him that.” This is now officially the best start to a season in Atalanta’s history with 28 points and 34 goals scored in the first 13 rounds. Having been at the club for almost a decade, inevitably there will be comparisons between his various iterations of Atalanta. “I don’t feel ready to make these comparisons right now, maybe towards the end of my career. If we’re talking about Gomez, Ilicic, Zapata and Muriel, a side that was close to the Champions League semi-final, another that won the Europa League. “It’s the same as you asking me about the Scudetto, we have to focus on winning every game we can and the rest is not really in our minds. That was the case in the Europa League too, we didn’t start out thinking we’d win it, but as time wore on and we found ourselves in that position, we weren’t going to hold back either.” They also have Retegui as Capocannoniere and are yet to concede a single goal in the Champions League after four games, where they visit Swiss side Young Boys on Tuesday. “Now we will try to turn our focus towards the Champions League. It can be decisive, as a victory could get us into the top 16. However, playing on a synthetic pitch, the only one in Europe, is certainly different. They caused Inter a lot of problems, so we’ll have to be wary of that.” Ederson was on target today and has attracted a great deal of attention from top clubs in recent weeks, , but he is not the usual Gasperini midfielder. “He has different characteristics, certainly. Remo Freuler was fantastic for Atalanta. I’ve had a lot of midfielders over the years, but he arrived as a more attacking player and then became a complete player to close spaces in an extraordinary way. If I had to create a mixture of all my previous midfielders, it’d be him. “I will always be grateful to all my players, they gave me so much over the years and I honestly struggle to put them in any kind of hierarchy. Since I arrived the first day with Atalanta, the only player still here is Rafael Toloi.” In his nine years at the helm, Atalanta have had been top scorers of Serie A for three seasons and are on track for a fourth, keeping that Gasperini style. “This has always been my way of approaching football, I was the same at Genoa and Crotone. Sometimes I watch games and think maybe I too should settle for performances that aren’t great, trying to slow things down and just defend, but really I cannot conceive of football without trying to score goals,” concluded the coach. “I know I’ll never win the award for best defensive record, but I might win the best attack.”

President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday vowed to name a new prime minister in the coming days to prevent France from sliding deeper into political turmoil, rejecting growing pressure from the opposition to resign. Macron adopted a defiant tone in an address to the nation, seeking to limit an escalating political crisis after Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government was ousted in a historic no-confidence vote. Contemporary France's shortest-serving premier, Barnier resigned after Wednesday's parliamentary defeat in a standoff over the budget forced his government to step down, the first such toppling of a French administration in over 60 years. Macron now faces the task for the third time this year of selecting a new prime minister and did not come up with a name in his address. "I will appoint a prime minister in the coming days," he said, adding this person would be charged with forming a "government of general interest" with a priority of passing a budget. He also lashed out at the French far right and hard left for uniting in an "anti-republican front" to bring down the government. He said lawmakers had "knowingly" chosen "to topple the budget and the government just days before the Christmas holidays." The French presidency said earlier that Barnier and his ministers would remain "in charge of daily business until the appointment of a new government". Limiting any impression of political chaos is all the more important for Macron given that on Saturday he will host world leaders -- including US President-elect Donald Trump -- for the reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris after a devastating 2019 fire. Pointing to how the edifice was rebuilt within the five-year timeline he had set, Macron said: "It's the proof we're able to do great things, that we can do the impossible." In an unusual move, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, France's top diplomat for just two-and-a-half months, urged unity in a message on social media, saying "instability is vulnerability" at a time of international uncertainty. A majority of lawmakers on Wednesday supported the no-confidence vote proposed by the hard left and backed by the far right headed by Marine Le Pen. Barnier's ejection in record time came after snap parliamentary elections in June resulted in a hung parliament. No political force was able to form an overall majority and the far right held the key to the government's survival. The trigger for Barnier's ouster was his 2025 budget plan, including austerity measures unacceptable to a majority in parliament, but which he argued were necessary to stabilise France's finances. More from this section On Monday he forced through a social security financing bill without a vote, but the ousting of the government means France is still without a budget. New legislative elections cannot be called until a year after the previous ones in summer 2024. But while Macron has more than two years of his presidential term left, some opponents are calling on him to resign to break the deadlock. According to a poll by Odoxa-Backbone Consulting for Le Figaro daily, 59 percent of French want the president to step down, while a survey by Harris for RTL put the figure even higher, at 64 percent. Bur Macron said: "The mandate that you gave to me democratically (in 2022 elections) is a five-year mandate and I will exercise it fully, right up to the end." "The 30 months we have ahead of us must be 30 months of useful action for the country." But he admitted his decision to call snap parliamentary elections this summer that resulted in a hung parliament "was not understood". "Many have blamed me for it and I know, many continue to blame me. It's a fact and it's my responsibility," he said. Hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon said that Macron was the "cause of the problem" in France "and would go due to the force of events" before his term ends. Barnier is Macron's fifth prime minister since coming to power in 2017. Each successive premier has served for a shorter period and, given the composition of the National Assembly, there is no guarantee that Barnier's successor would last any longer. Loyalist Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and Macron's centrist ally Francois Bayrou have been touted as possible contenders, as has former Socialist premier and interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve. Bayrou, who leads the MoDem party, had lunch with the president at the Elysee, a source close to him told AFP. sjw/ah/gv
Noni Madueke has no doubts that Chelsea ’s young squad would be “up for” a Premier League title race - but insists they are not getting distracted by thoughts of reeling in Liverpool just yet. Both Enzo Maresca and his players have been steadfast in insisting it is too soon for the Blues to challenge for the title, despite their superb start to the season. Maresca’s side are the division’s top-scorers and climbed to second after hammering Southampton 5-1 on Wednesday night. That result, coupled with Liverpool’s thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle has seen the gap to the runaway leaders close to seven points heading into the busy festive period and Maresca’s charges appear to be building strong momentum at just the right time. Madueke, however, says all focus is on themselves, and not catching Arne Slot’s men. “Of course we are up for it,” Madueke said when asked about the title race. “[But] whether we are in it or not is a different question. “However, we are taking every game as it comes. We are trying to progress and trying to get better. We are focusing on ourselves, really, and really trying to improve. “We won 5-1 [at Southampton] and in the dressing room we are very happy with that, but we also know that we can be a lot better. It’s really focusing on us, focusing on training and trying to improve.” Madueke scored one and set-up another in the thrashing of the Saints, on his return to the lineup after being left out of Sunday’s win over Aston Villa. Maresca revealed that he had taken the decision to axe Madueke for that game after growing frustrated at the winger’s performances in training , and urged him to be “more ambitious”. Still, the Italian insisted he is pleased with the 22-year-old’s progress this season and Madueke himself praised the manager’s tough love approach. “He is honest and truthful,” he added. “He tells the truth and he is a man you can trust. That’s all you want from a coach. “He is not necessarily a coach that is trying to be best friends with everyone, but he is a coach that is straight with everyone and fair to everyone. That’s what you need at a top club like Chelsea.”

Netflix continues to express confidence that its streaming platform is prepared to handle the massive audiences expected for a pair of Christmas Day NFL games along with the start of its live coverage of the World Wrestling Entertainment's "Raw" next month. Concerns were raised after users experienced issues with buffering and low quality feeds during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match last month. Netflix has exclusive rights to stream NFL games on Christmas Day between the Kansas City Chiefs at the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens at the Houston Texans. Beyonce is scheduled to perform during halftime of the Ravens-Texans game, which could create more server traffic Netflix must take into account. It's a major test after the company reported an average global live audience of 108 million viewers for Paul's victory over Tyson in Arlington, Texas. Downdetector.com , which tracks service outages, announced that there were 90,000 issues reported at one point. "It was a big number, but you don't know, and you can't learn these things until you do them, so you take a big swing," Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria told Front Office Sports. "Our teams and our engineers are amazing, moved super quickly, and stabilized it, and many of the members had it back up and running pretty quickly. But we learn from these things. "We've all obviously done a lot of stuff to learn and get ready for the NFL and Beyonce, and so we're totally ready and excited for WWE." WWE president Nick Khan told FOS that Raw's tone and content will not change as it moves to the streaming service, with its first event of 2025 scheduled for Jan. 6. "There's some online chatter about, ‘oh, it's going to be R-rated, or for us old folks, X-rated.' That's definitely not happening," Khan said. "It's family-friendly, multi-generational, advertiser-friendly programming. It's going to stay that way. I would look for more global flair, especially as the relationship continues to develop." --Field Level MediaCoach Steve Sarkisian and the No. 2 Texas Longhorns capped off the 2024 college football regular season with a 17-7 win over in-state rival, the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies, on Saturday, advancing to the SEC Championship Game in their first year in the conference. Quarterback Quinn Ewers has been the starter for the Texas offense for the majority of the year, albeit for a few games at the beginning of the season as he was dealing with an abdominal injury. Backup Arch Manning took over while Ewers was out and proved he could lead a top-tier team, going 2-0 in his two starts. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content.
