Representatives from the Human Rights Commissions of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Timor-Leste, attended in person. The Annual Conference was opened by Mr Virgilio da Silva Guterres, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Timor-Leste who is the rotating Chair of the SEANF for 2024. The conference discussed the major developments and activities of the Forum’s member National Human Rights Institutions in promoting and protecting human rights since the 20th Annual Conference of SEANF, the matter included the implementation of the five priority areas outlined in the SEANF Strategic Plan (2022-2026), proposed amendments to the Forum’s Rules of Procedure (RoP), activities by the Malaysian Human Rights Commission related to the international transfer of prisoners (ITOP), the invitation to the “RightCon” conference by Chinese Taipei National Human Rights Commission, the rights of older persons and stateless persons in Sabah, Malaysia, and cooperative efforts between SEANF, the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF), and Association of the Prevention of Torture (APT). At the Conference, U Paw Lwin Sein, Chairman of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, presented updates on the Commission’s activities and major developments in promoting and protecting human rights since the 20th Annual Conference. Dr Khine Khine Win, Deputy Director-General of the Commission Office, provided details on the Commission’s implementation of human rights in business activities, which is Priority 2 of the SEANF Strategic Plan (2022-2026). At the Conference, the Human Rights Commission of Timor-Leste handed over the Forum’s rotating chairmanship for 2025 to the National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia. On 20 November, the Forum held a side event entitled “International Seminar on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) in Southeast Asia’s Border (Sharing Best Practice and Cases”. The event featured an opening speech by Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste. The event was attended by the Chairpersons, Vice-Chairpersons, and members of the National Human Rights Commissions that are part of the Forum, along with representatives from Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, civil society organizations, and experts in the field. Since then, the search giant has gradually adopted the name Gemini for almost everything it does related to AI. The Bard chatbot was the first to fall, becoming simply Gemini earlier this year. This was soon followed by the Gemini Assistant largely replacing the previous assistant on Android. The company also uses Gemini in Docs and for developers. After the initial flurry of activity things seemed to slow down for Google. Rather than a new name, as they'd done previously, the company doubled down on Gemini, adding it to ever more products and services. Then, in December Google released Gemini 2.0 . CEO Sundar Pichai described its release as the start of the Agent Era. This is where AI models perform tasks on your behalf based on an initial set of instructions. What is Gemini? The Gemini model has been trained not just on text, but as a multimodal model which can process images, video, audio and even computer code. This is similar to OpenAI 's GPT-4o and as of Gemini 2 it can also output those modalities. In line with Google’s typical mode of operation, the latest version of the model has been quietly developed over the past months and offers some features that more hyped products like ChatGPT have overlooked. For example, there are now over 50,000 variations of Gemini on Hugging Face, covering a multitude of languages and uses. Unfortunately, this variety has generated quite a bit of confusion. The latest flurry of Gemini launches has made things even worse, and so we thought it was time to lay out a clear map of the Gemini universe to make things easier to understand. The first thing to realize is Google likes to mix and match model technology and applications, with variations of the same name. Once you get that clear, everything else starts to slot into place. 1. Models In the beginning was DeepMind, the AI lab launched in London in 2010. This foundation stone of the whole AI industry delivered the LaMDA, PaLM, and Gato AI models to the world. Gemini is the latest iteration of this generational family. Version 1.0 of the Gemini model was launched in three flavors, Ultra, Pro and Nano. As the names suggest, the models ranged from high power down to petite versions designed to run on phones and other small devices. Note that much of the confusion from the subsequent launches has come about because of Google's philosophical tussle between its search and AI businesses. AI cannibalism of search has always been a sword hanging above the company’s head, and has contributed mightily to its ‘will they, won’t they’ attitude towards releasing AI products. Gemini 1.5, released ten months ago, was an incremental improvement of the original model, incorporating mixture of experts (MoE) tech, a one million token context window and new architecture. Since that time we’ve seen the launch of Gemini 1.5 Flash, Gemini 1.5 Pro-002 and Gemini 1.5 Flash-002 - the latter released just three months ago. At the same time the company also made a surprising foray into open model territory, with the launch of the free Gemma product. These 2B and 7B parameter models were seen as a direct response to Meta ’s release of the Llama model family. Gemma 2.0 was released five months later. Gemini 2.0 launched in December 2024, and is billed as a model for the agentic era. The first version to be released was Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental, a high performance multimodal model, which supports tool use like Google search, and function calling for code generation. Within weeks the company launched Gemini 2.0 Experimental Advanced, apparently the full version of the current generation. We say apparently because at this point in time nobody’s really sure what’s full and what’s early code. What can be said with certainty is that Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental is an extremely capable and performant AI model all round. Gemini models Gemma models ( Gemmaverse) 2. Applications Google is both a research and a product company. DeepMind and Google AI lead the research and release the models. The other side of Google takes those models and puts them into products. This includes hardware, software and services. Chatbots Chatbots lead the charge in terms of Google applications, as they do for so many other foundation model suppliers. Again, this being Google, things get a little bit fuzzy in terms of names and functions. Gemini chatbot. This used to be called Bard, and is completely separate to the Gemini model. Ten months ago Bard and Duet AI, another Google product, were merged together under the Gemini brand with the launch of an Android app. Subsequent to that action, Gemini chat has now been integrated into more Google products, including Android Assistant, the Chrome browser, Google Photos and Google Workspace. At the time of writing the Gemini Chatbot and legacy Android Assistant are offered as dual options on the latest versions of the Android phone operating system. Gemini Live is seen as the Google alternative to OpenAI’s low latency, high speed Advanced Voice Mode, and is expected to roll out across Google Pixel smartphones in the near future. Products While Gemini as a chatbot might get most of the new models and attention from AI aficionados, most of the eyes on AI will be going to Gemini on mobile. This comes in two forms, first through the Gemini App on iPhone and Android, and then through its deep integration into the Android operating system. On Android developers can even use the Gemini Nano model in their own apps without having to use a cloud-based, or costly model to perform basic tasks. The deep integration allows for system functions to be triggered from Gemini, as well as the use of Gemini Live — the AI voice assistant — to play songs and more. In brief: Shopping for USB cables typically involves comparing compatibility, speed, power delivery, length, and price. However, Sanwa Supply's new USB-C cable features an interesting gimmick that could make using devices while connected easier. Although the cord isn't extremely fast or long, it is rugged and versatile when you need a quick charge. Sanwa Supply's 500-USB090 USB-C cable is now available on the company's Japanese storefront. The cable's rotating plug aims to make using portable devices less frustrating while charging. Each end of Sanwa's cable rotates 180 degrees vertically and 360 degrees horizontally, enabling users to tuck the cord out of the way in any orientation. Most USB cables dictate a device's position according to how they bend, but Sanwa demonstrates how the 500-USB090 eliminates this problem (below). The cable supports 240W power delivery to swiftly charge phones, tablets, a Nintendo Switch, portable monitors, and MacBooks. Its 240W power rating will likely remain uncommon until USB4 2.0 and Thunderbolt 5 become more widely available. Sanwa shows the flexible cable attached to such devices at a bedside, table, and vehicle dashboard. The 500-USB090's main drawback is that it only supports USB 2.0 data transfers at up to 480Mbps, which is likely why the company primarily advertises it as a power cable. Most standard USB cables currently support USB 3.2, which delivers much higher speeds. Once the new USB4 and Thunderbolt protocols are more widely adopted, we'll see bi-directional transfers at 80Gbps or asymmetrical connections at 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other. Charging at 240W is also possible but not universal. Elecom became the first company to introduce a certified USB4 2.0 cable in October, but only one model supports 240W charging while the other is limited to 60W. Meanwhile, newer PCs like Apple's M4 Macs have begun adopting Thunderbolt 5, and older desktops can gain compatibility through PCIe cards . It remains unclear if or when Sanwa plans to sell the 500-USB090 globally, but the cable is already available in Japan for ¥2,580 (or about $16). I have two young daughters and it doesn’t take long before a combination of drawing, craft and food turns the house into a pigsty. So when Roborock reached out and offered to let me review a couple of their units, I thought I’d try a little experiment. I decided to pit two different types of vacuum cleaners against each other to see which one is the most useful to a young family living in western Sydney. I got my hands on the Qrevo Edge, a new machine that’s being launched in Australia in January. The robotic vacuum cleaner was first revealed at the IFA 2024 industrial exhibition in Berlin I also got ahold of the H5, which was released earlier this year. It’s Roborock’s latest lightweight handheld cordless vacuum. This is the Roborock Qrevo Edge. Picture: Supplied And this is the Roborock H5. Picture: Supplied Qrevo Edge The Qrevo Edge is the company’s high tech new robovac, and was announced alongside the Qrevo Curv. I haven’t seen the Curv but my understanding is that the Edge and Curv have almost identical specs, except for the dock station. There are five major upgrades in the new Qrevo Edge and I put them to the test. Robovac that can climb Firstly, the cleaning robot can lift its entire chassis by 10mm. I found out this is an incredibly handy feature as the unit I live in has an uneven floor. You see there’s a fairly sizeable height gap between the hallway and the bathroom entrance that other robovacs have struggled to climb. This meant that the bathroom floor missed out while other areas were being regularly cleaned. The Qrevo Edge, however, rose to the challenge, literally. The function is called AdaptiLift Chassis, and it kicks in when the robot detects a difference in height. It then automatically lifts, allowing it to overcome thresholds of 30mm and double-layer thresholds of 40mm, reportedly the highest in the industry. This means it can get more effectively overcome obstacles, better clean high pile carpets and crawl over sled-leg tables or chairs. If this tech is a sign of things to come, it probably won’t be long before robovacs are climbing stairs (Roborock hasn’t announced anything like this yet, but it’s nice to dream). Picture: Supplied Tangle-free design Then there’s the dual anti-tangle system: the DuoDivide main brush and the FlexiArm Arc side brush. Tangled hair has actually been a pet peeve of my mine when using other models of robovacs as things often get caught in the brush, ends, and side brush. To deal with that, you need to take apart the cleaner and manually remove the knots, sometimes with scissors or a knife. Roborock has addressed this with a smart design solution. While normal robovacs have side brush shaped like a three-clawed propeller, the FlexiArm side brush is arc-shaped with a two-claw design. This has the benefit of producing a centrifugal force that throws off hairs during rotation, and provides less support for the hairs to get caught on. It also has longer bristles which means a better cleaning performance. The DuoDivide main brush, meanwhile, is designed to funnel hairs into the central dustbin. This is due to the two parallel short bristle rollers with spiral blades, meant to send hairs (and other rubbish) hurtling towards their ultimate fate. Although I don’t have pets, there are plenty of hairs in this house, and the robovac managed to stay tangle-free. The Roborock Qrevo Edge gets right into the corners. Picture: Supplied Man does it suck, in a good way Sorry for that pun, I couldn’t help myself. But suction power has definitely been ramped up. The Edge is now equipped with the HyperForce providing 18,500Pa of suction (pascals measure the vacuum’s suction strength). This benchmark is also reportedly an industry-best. That means it’s better at tough tasks like pulling out hair embedded in carpet. My unit has mostly wooden floors, but there are some rugs where hair inevitably seems to gather, and it did a good job of cleaning those. It also picked up the sand which made it way into our place from various sandpits in Parramatta Park. A robovac that actually cleans the corners Another thing that’s very obvious when the robovac is in action is the FlexiArm tech. This allows the robot to extend the arc side brush and right-side mop when cleaning corners. Edges and corners have always been a weak point of robovacs and I found that the extended cleaning makes a big difference. The FlexiArm Arc extends the brush, and the FlexiArm Mop expands the mop coverage, vastly improving the percentage of the total area cleaned. In terms of cleaning, there’s also a dual mop system, which operates at 180RPM, and the mopping intensity can be adjusted with different water flow levels. Hotter water in the dock That last point provides a good segue to talk about the multifunctional dock, where there have been some improvements. The water temperature for mop washing has been increased from 60C to 75C and the dock has a self-cleaning function that uses hot water. The hot water mop washing is better for cleaning stains, and particularly worked well near the kitchen area. As the mop is cleaned, the dock can also detect how dirty the mop is, and determine whether rewashing or re-mopping is required. I should also point out that there are a range of features on the app. You can control suction power, power flow, the route, and customise the floor plan for cleaning. The robovac also responds to voice commands (various languages are available) and connects to the home Wi-Fi. And, it’s smart enough to permanently note down furniture, as well as spot and avoid objects. I still found that it’s best to tidy up the house before running the Edge, just to avoid problems and to ensure the entire floor is cleaned. I found it’s best used for spot cleaning, rather than a whole house top-to-bottom. There are two functions that I liked the best about the H5. Firstly, you can mount it on the wall for easy storage. It’s quite unobtrusive if positioned in a subtle place like a laundry, and looks fairly good while mounted. Secondly, the H5 is versatile as it has various attachments for different uses. There’s the main multi-surface brush for floors and carpets. And it can automatically activate a 50 per cent power increase on carpets. You can also attach two much smaller brushes, the 2-in-1 Crevice Brush and the Motorised Mini Brush. The Roborock H5 with the Crevice Brush attached. Picture: Supplied You can use the Roborock H5 like a small vacuum cleaner with the powerful Motorised Mini Brush. Picture: Supplied I found the Crevice Brush is good for cleaning annoying spots like car seat and behind appliances. The Motorised Mini Brush is best used for firmly embedded hair, mats and extremely dirty surfaces. As for the stats, it has 158 air watts, a calculation of air flow and wattage. This is used because suction power is lost through the vacuum filter and cyclone. I found it to be strong enough to pick up any rubbish in my unit. It’s light at just 1.55kg (1.82kg with the mini brush) and Roborock claims a 99.997% whole-machine filtration rate, mostly for dust and debris, which has been certified. The machine itself is based on a 9-cone, two-level separation system. Essentially the air is forced to spin around in a vortex, which causes heavier particles to be flung outwards due to the centrifugal force. This is done to ensure the air passes through unobstructed. It’s fairly quiet too, peaking around 68.9dB(A), around the level of typical speech. I was quite impressed with the battery life and I never ran into a problem. It’s my understanding it can run up to an hour on a charge. I found emptying the cleaner to be fairly easy too, you just click a button and the bottom opens. There’s a window so you can tell when it needs emptying, although I generally empty after every clean. Most of the parts are washable too, which helps for longevity. The Roborock Qrevo Edge, which can reach into corners, was the clear winner in my book. Picture: Supplied The verdict The Qrevo Edge wins out due to its convenience and overall cleaning power. The suction power, extended mopping reach, and anti-tangle functions made a big difference in keeping my unit sparkling clean. It performed particularly well as an end-of-day cleaner. However, the H5 also has its uses and is particularly good at solving mess problems instantly. When the kids make a spill on the floor (which seems to happen every half an hour or so), it’s easy to grab the H5 and quickly clean it up. And to be fair, it’s like comparing apples with oranges. The Qrevo Edge retails for $2799 (it will be available on January 1) and can clean the house while you sleep. The H5 is selling for $599 and is great for spot-cleaning. They are different models made for different purposes, but overall I found the Qrevo Edge to be the most useful in keeping this messy house under control. Rangers could’ve, in theory, cut the gap at the top to six points and changed the feel of their season if the Old Firm went their way on January 2nd. Could Philippe Clement finally grasp momentum that’s proven out of reach since March? Now the prospect of sitting 15 behind the top of the table is more realistic come early January. Clement was vexed speaking to assembled media last night referencing an angry half-time in which he could’ve substituted “eight or nine” individuals who’d conspired to enter the dressing room a goal behind, insisting: “It's not a tactical [issue] because there was no big change in tactics in the second half. It's about quality, that moment, intensity. And that's the frustrating part, that I didn't see that one coming or nobody saw that one coming, if you see the consistency over the last two months.” And yet, as Rangers recorded their fourth domestic defeat on the road of the league season, the failure to acknowledge any pattern or assume any responsibility does not help. While it would be overly dramatic to suggest last night’s result was on the horizon, it would be overly optimistic to think it far out of reach. If anything, this performance was a continuation of what Rangers have served up for most of the season away from Ibrox. While St Mirren created a meagre open-play total (0.22xG) their penalty after 30 minutes offered an advantage to protect. Clement dismissed the notion that Rangers’ tempo dropped after Danilo’s equaliser on the hour but the stats disagree. Rangers ’ xG from 0-45 minutes was 0.17, from 47-61 minutes 1.05 and from 61-97 0.16. The last domestic trip before this, a 3-0 win over Ross County, was the only win Rangers have managed by a margin away from Ibrox all campaign. The Ibrox side are seven unbeaten under the Belgian’s management away in European competition. Their xG difference is 1.24 away from home, the best in the entire Europa League competition. What is it about trips in Scotland that prove so challenging? The Belgian is clearly not a bad coach or an incapable one. If penalty kicks had swung in the other direction at Hampden a fortnight ago in a game his team shaded, the conversation would have been so different. And yet, last night was not a new performance. Rangers scarcely control games when they dominate the ball and remain too reliant on individuals. Taking Nico Raskin and Danilo out of yesterday’s team demonstrated that fact. While the manager insisted his tactics did not change after the break the introduction of either player was stark. Clement had seemingly found a formula in recent weeks with two strikers, Igamane and Danilo, adding goalthreat and a clever rotation in attack alongside Ianis Hagi adding some much-needed unpredictability. It’s understandable, even in hindsight, that Raskin took a break at No.6 given a booking would’ve ruled him out of the January Old Firm.
