The suspect in the murder of UnitedHealth Group UNH.N executive Brian Thompson was not a customer of the health insurer, a company spokesperson said on Friday. Ivy League-educated Luigi Mangione was charged with murder on Dec. 9 for the killing of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel before a company conference, following a five-day manhunt. Mangione suffered from chronic back pain that affected his daily life, according to friends and social media posts, though it is unclear whether his personal health played a role in the shooting. UnitedHealth does not have prior records for either Mangione or his mother, the spokesperson said. Thompson’s murder was met with shock across the industry, as well as an outpouring of anger from Americans struggling with healthcare costs and the complexities of U.S. health insurance. Public officials and healthcare executives have acknowledged the frustrations, but in the last few days have been more vocal in pushing back against social media glorification of an accused killer. In a New York Times opinion piece on Friday, UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty said he understood public frustrations with the “flawed” U.S. healthcare system, but mourned Thompson’s killing and decried the “vitriol that has been directed at our colleagues who have been barraged by threats.” Thompson was CEO of the company’s large health insurance business. The New York Times reported that an internal New York City police report analyzing Mangione’s writings concluded that he viewed the killing as a justified response to what he believed to be corruption in the healthcare industry. In some circles, Mangione has been celebrated and more than a thousand donations have poured into an online fundraiser for his legal defense. “It’s representing a widespread anger that is felt by people in the middle class, in the working class and people who are well-to-do who also have trouble with their insurance company,” said Pepper Culpepper, a professor of government and public policy at Oxford University. ABC News and others reported on Friday that a Florida woman was arrested after she allegedly ended a phone call with a representative from her insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield by saying the words “Delay, deny, depose. You people are next.” The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were carved into shell casings found at the Thompson murder scene, several news outlets reported, evoking the title of a book critical of the insurance industry published in 2010 titled “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.” ‘INTENSELY PERSONAL AND VERY COMPLICATED’ “Health care is both intensely personal and very complicated, and the reasons behind coverage decisions are not well understood,” Witty wrote in his first public comments since the murder, noting that the U.S. healthcare system is a patchwork built over decades. “We share some of the responsibility for that. Together with employers, governments and others who pay for care, we need to improve how we explain what insurance covers and how decisions are made,” he wrote. Health insurance companies have come under sharp public scrutiny since Thompson’s Dec. 4 murder, and shares of UnitedHealth alone have fallen nearly 15%. It isn’t clear if the recent events “represent a watershed moment” that could catalyze change in the industry, said Morningstar analyst Julie Utterback. “You can definitely feel the potential for some kind of change in the air.” The healthcare sector has reassessed security measures due to an uptick in violent crime the last 18 months, Reuters reported, with UnitedHealth and rivals CVS Health CVS.N and Cigna CI.N removing photos of their leadership from their websites following the shooting. Instead of boosting security for executives, insurers should manage public perception of their services, said Culpepper, adding that many Americans believe big health insurers refuse to cover needed care in an effort to bolster revenue. “This sort of ambient discontent around health insurance in the United States will not go away until it starts to be addressed.”

Betty White Forever: New stamp will honor the much-beloved 'Golden Girls' actorFARGO — When Jimmy Carter emerged on the national stage during his 1976 presidential campaign, he captured the curiosity of many in North Dakota and Minnesota with his humble roots as a peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia. Carter, who passed away Sunday at 100, holds the distinction of living longer than any other president after leaving office — a remarkable 44 years. Renowned for extensive humanitarian efforts following his presidency, Carter was often regarded as a more impactful former president than commander-in-chief. ADVERTISEMENT Over the last 44 years, we've learned a lot about Carter as a politician, president and social reformer. However, in the late 1970s, people here knew little about him. Still, when reporters asked for their thoughts, they had plenty to say. WDAY-TV News often conducted what reporters called "Man on the Street" interviews. Longtime WDAY-TV anchorman Marv Bossart did a series of interviews in 1976 and 1977 as Jimmy Carter ran for and eventually won the White House. Bossart chatted with regular people about various issues, asking questions such as "What would you ask the new president?" and "What do you think of the president's controversial brother, Billy Carter?" Fortunately, all those years ago, WDAY shared these films with the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Thanks to the hard work of archivist Greta Beck, you can now see them in their entirety. The clips are fascinating for several reasons. First, it's interesting to note how civil the discourse was. The people who disagreed with Carter didn't seem angry or hostile when expressing their opinions. There appeared to be a level of respect and an "agree to disagree" mindset that we don't often see today. For those not interested in 1970s-era politics, it's also enlightening to see what everyone wore and what West Acres looked like back then. Bendigo businessman Michael Currie's legacy from the 1980s is something that councillors Chatley and Awasthi and the region's Indian community are proud of. Mr Currie served two terms as a Bendigo city councillor from 1984 to 1992 and a term as mayor in 1986-87. He opened the first McDonalds restaurant in Bendigo in 1977 and was a tireless advocate for the community through his work with the Red Cross, Salvation Army and other organisations. His wife Helene Porter described her late husband as an amazing man who was so generous. "He came from nothing. His family didn't have a lot of money when they arrived here," Ms Porter said. Mr Currie was born in the Blue Mountains in southern India in 1949, the son of Anglo-Indian parents Jeanette and Leslie Currie. he had two sisters and a brother. "His great-grandfather was English and his mother was Indian-Portuguese," Ms Porter said. After British rule of India ended in 1947, many Anglo-Indians emigrated to the United Kingdom or other Commonwealth countries such as Canada and Australia. The exodus continued through the 1950s and 1960s, and Mr Currie's father was considering a move to Canada before a chance meeting with Bendigo bishop Monsignor Francis Peter de Campo saw the family settle in Australia in 1967. Aged 18, Mr Currie found work as a lube mechanic at Symes Motors before becoming a linesman with the PMG and completing a technician course with Telecom. However, he had a greater calling. "He had a great interest in food and saw an ad in the paper one day calling for applicants to run a McDonalds restaurant and he thought 'what on earth is this?'," Ms Porter said. "He applied and they came up to interview us. There were no other applicants so in 1977 he opened the first McDonalds store in country Victoria here in Bendigo." A community-minded man, Mr Currie joined the Bendigo Ratepayers Association. Ms Porter said that a few city councillors were resigning at the time, prompting her husband's decision to run for council. This made for a confronting election campaign for the family. "Back then people were a lot more prejudiced," Ms Porter said. "People are a lot more open-minded now but back then when Michael went door-to-door people would say, 'oh my god, you're black'. And it wasn't just on the election trail that Mr Currie was faced with prejudice. "When we got married in 1970 family friends didn't come to our wedding because I was marrying a black man," Ms Porter recalled. The couple had two children - Adrian and Michelle - who supported his tilt at council. Mr Currie defeated three-time mayor Roy (Dick) Turner for Sutton Ward in 1984 which was no mean feat. "It was a big thing," Ms Porter said. "Dick Turner was Mr Bendigo." A tireless promoter of Bendigo, Mr Currie helped organise Bendigo tram number 19 float which took part in Melbourne's Moomba procession in 1987 and was later voted "Best Country Float". He always strived for better communication between council and the community, even writing a weekly column in the titled, appropriately enough, 'The Mayor Speaks'. As mayor, Mr Currie was also the keen driver of Bendigo's sister city relationship with Los Altos in California. Following Mr Currie's death in 1993, the former mayor of Los Altos and founding president of Los Altos Sister Cities King Lear penned a heartfelt tribute to Mr Currie, saying he "possessed a wonderful mixture of youthful exuberance, vision, generosity, skill and energy and he was a true gentleman". Having attended Mr Currie's funeral, Mr Lear described the service as "a remarkable outpouring of love and respect". "It was touching to see city staff lining the route to the cemetery and all the young people in attendance," Mr Lear wrote. Mr Currie died on March 31, 1993 from a heart attack while waiting in the Bangalore airport in India. He had been visiting friends and family in India on his way to England to take part in the London to Sydney motor car marathon. He was 43. The front page of the on April 2, 1993 carried a tribute to Mr Currie, saying the city was "in mourning after the sudden death of former mayor and prominent businessman, Michael Currie". "The city's flags were at half-staff yesterday and the business community was stunned at his sudden passing." Former mayor Colin Nankervis described Mr Currie as "a great bloke and a great friend. At the very least, every kid in Bendigo knows of him or his business. He was a very generous man, putting-in in many projects." Bendigo mayor at the time James Douglass said of Mr Currie: "He made a fantastic contribution to Bendigo. The news of his death is causing such dismay. Many of us are having trouble coming to grips with it." Bendigo chief executive officer Ray Burton said he and the mayor would wear full civic regala at Mr Currie's funeral - the highest honour accorded by a city and one rarely seen in Bendigo. "He was an innovator, a lateral thinker. He served his city with a genuine affection," Mr Burton said. The 's editorial that day was dedicated to Mr Currie's legacy, stating in part: "This newspaper did not always see eye to eye with Michael, but always recognised his dedication and passion for Bendigo, and his willingness to make a difference. Bendigo is a lesser place with his passing." More than 800 people attended his funeral at St Kilians Church on April 7, 1993. He was interred at Bendigo Lawn Cemetery. After retiring from council, Mr Currie set up a second McDonalds at Kangaroo Flat but still worked for the betterment of the Bendigo community. "He was always very involved with the community," Ms Porter said. "The Rotary club, Salvation Army, chairman of the Red Cross appeal committee." "Bendigo was so good to him. The Washington Capitals have confirmed that captain Alex Ovechkin will miss 4-6 weeks after suffering a fracture to his left fibula during Monday night’s game against the Utah Hockey Club . The injury occurred following a knee-on-knee collision, marking what is likely to become the longest injury-related layoff of Ovechkin’s illustrious NHL career. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin underwent further evaluation with team doctors. It was confirmed that Ovechkin has a fracture to his left fibula and is anticipated to miss 4-6 weeks. For the 39-year-old forward, each game missed represents a delay in his historic chase of Gretzky’s goal-scoring record. And, it’s not just time missed, but how long it will take for the dynamic star to get up to speed when he returns. By JILL COLVIN and STEPHEN GROVES WASHINGTON (AP) — After several weeks working mostly behind closed doors, Vice President-elect JD Vance returned to Capitol Hill this week in a new, more visible role: Helping Donald Trump try to get his most contentious Cabinet picks to confirmation in the Senate, where Vance has served for the last two years. Vance arrived at the Capitol on Wednesday with former Rep. Matt Gaetz and spent the morning sitting in on meetings between Trump’s choice for attorney general and key Republicans, including members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The effort was for naught: Gaetz announced a day later that he was withdrawing his name amid scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations and the reality that he was unlikely to be confirmed. Thursday morning Vance was back, this time accompanying Pete Hegseth, the “Fox & Friends Weekend” host whom Trump has tapped to be the next secretary of defense. Hegseth also has faced allegations of sexual assault that he denies. Vance is expected to accompany other nominees for meetings in coming weeks as he tries to leverage the two years he has spent in the Senate to help push through Trump’s picks. Usually the job goes to a former senator who has close relationships on the Hill, or a more junior aide. But this time the role fits Vance, said Marc Short, who served as Trump’s first director of legislative affairs as well as chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, Mike Pence, who spent more than a decade in Congress and led the former president’s transition ahead of his first term. ”JD probably has a lot of current allies in the Senate and so it makes sense to have him utilized in that capacity,” Short said. Unlike the first Trump transition, which played out before cameras at Trump Tower in New York and at the president-elect’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this one has largely happened behind closed doors in Palm Beach, Florida. There, a small group of officials and aides meet daily at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to run through possible contenders and interview job candidates. The group includes Elon Musk, the billionaire who has spent so much time at the club that Trump has joked he can’t get rid of him. Vance has been a constant presence, even as he’s kept a lower profile. The Ohio senator has spent much of the last two weeks in Palm Beach, according to people familiar with his plans, playing an active role in the transition, on which he serves as honorary chair. Vance has been staying at a cottage on the property of the gilded club, where rooms are adorned with cherubs, oriental rugs and intricate golden inlays. It’s a world away from the famously hardscrabble upbringing that Vance documented in the memoir that made him famous, “Hillbilly Elegy.” His young children have also joined him at Mar-a-Lago, at times. Vance was photographed in shorts and a polo shirt playing with his kids on the seawall of the property with a large palm frond, a U.S. Secret Service robotic security dog in the distance. On the rare days when he is not in Palm Beach, Vance has been joining the sessions remotely via Zoom. Though he has taken a break from TV interviews after months of constant appearances, Vance has been active in the meetings, which began immediately after the election and include interviews and as well as presentations on candidates’ pluses and minuses. Among those interviewed: Contenders to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray , as Vance wrote in a since-deleted social media post. Defending himself from criticism that he’d missed a Senate vote in which one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was confirmed, Vance wrote that he was meeting at the time “with President Trump to interview multiple positions for our government, including for FBI Director.” “I tend to think it’s more important to get an FBI director who will dismantle the deep state than it is for Republicans to lose a vote 49-46 rather than 49-45,” Vance added on X. “But that’s just me.” While Vance did not come in to the transition with a list of people he wanted to see in specific roles, he and his friend, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who is also a member of the transition team, were eager to see former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. find roles in the administration. Trump ended up selecting Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence , a powerful position that sits atop the nation’s spy agencies and acts as the president’s top intelligence adviser.
