HALIFAX — Zach Churchill resigned as Nova Scotia Liberal leader Tuesday after leading his party to a resounding defeat in the Nov. 26 provincial election. Churchill made the announcement at the Liberal caucus office in Halifax, saying he will be immediately replaced on an interim basis by Derek Mombourquette, while the other member of the caucus, Iain Rankin, will share in the leadership responsibilities while serving as house leader in the legislature. The announcement followed Monday’s recount in the district of Yarmouth, which saw Churchill lose his seat to Progressive Conservative candidate Nick Hilton by a final tally of 16 votes. “I’m certainly sorry that I couldn’t have produced better results for our candidates and our members of the legislature, but I’m certainly encouraged as I pass the torch on that we will continue to rebuild,” said Churchill. The Liberals were reduced to just two seats, losing 12 of the 14 seats they held going into the election campaign, which was the first for Churchill as party leader. Progressive Conservative Premier Tim Houston led his party to a second consecutive majority government, winning 43 of the legislature's 55 seats, after the results of a recount Tuesday that confirmed a Tory victory in the riding of Annapolis. The New Democrats, led by Claudia Chender, were elevated to official Opposition status with nine seats, and one Independent candidate was re-elected. Churchill pointed out that his party did get 23 per cent of the popular vote even if it won less than four per cent of the total seats. “If I have one regret about the campaign and my career in politics, it is that I didn’t talk more about my personal passion for proportional representation,” he said. “I think this election gives us a very clear example of how it is important to reform our electoral system.” The 40-year-old former cabinet minister was elected Liberal leader in July 2022 and had held the riding in his hometown of Yarmouth since winning a byelection in 2010. He was re-elected in 2013, 2017 and 2021. The party said the process to replace Churchill would be announced in the coming months. Mombourquette said Churchill’s decision was a “tough moment for the team” but he added that party rebuilding work would begin immediately. “Iain and I will be out and engaging across the province with candidates who ran in the last election and with their riding associations,” Mombourquette said. “There’s a lot of work that needs to happen there ... we will also have to prepare and start looking at policy for when the house goes back into session.” The legislature reconvened briefly on Tuesday as newly elected members were sworn into office and Tory Danielle Barkhouse was re-elected Speaker. The government also got consent from the legislature to move ahead with its promise to reduce the provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax by one per cent on April 1. Following the sitting, Houston told reporters that he is also supportive of the federal government’s so-called GST holiday, taking effect for two months beginning Saturday. “We recognize the affordability challenges that Nova Scotians are facing and Canadians are facing,” he said. “We have some details to work out with the federal government to really understand it, but I think the spirit of what they are trying to do, we certainly agree with, and we will work with them on that.” Houston campaigned against federal policy such as carbon pricing during the election, but after a meeting Monday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Halifax, the premier said they had “productive” discussions. “There are things we just won’t agree on — I just don’t agree on the carbon tax — but there are things I think we can work together on,” he said mentioning the province’s fisheries and the work needed to protect from flooding the Chignecto Isthmus, which connects Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Zach Churchill stepping down as leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal PartyThe Department of Agriculture will require dairy producers in several states to submit raw milk samples in order to test for Bird Flu infection. No, this does not mean the milk you buy at the grocery store could be infected with Bird Flu. Pasteurization kills the virus, and the risk of transmission to humans remains low. The live virus has, however, been identified in raw, unpasteurized milk, so if you’re into that kind of thing, this may be a sign to reconsider what you’re drinking. The new federal guidelines are part of a “National Milk Testing Strategy” (NMTS) aimed at identifying bird flu infections in dairy cattle herds amidst an outbreak of the disease in several states. According to a press release issued by the USDA on Friday, “this NMTS is designed to increase USDA’s and public health partners’ understanding of the virus’ spread in the United States through a structured, uniform, and mandatory testing system that will help swiftly identify which states, and specific herds within them, are affected with H5N1.” Infected herds are subjected to enhanced biosecurity measures to decrease the risk of transmission to other livestock — as the virus is incredibly deadly to poultry — as well as mitigate the risk of potential human transmission. “This testing strategy is a critical part of our ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of individuals and communities nationwide,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Our primary responsibility at HHS is to protect public health and the safety of the food supply, and we continue to work closely with USDA and all stakeholders on continued testing for H5N1 in retail milk and dairy samples from across the country to ensure the safety of the commercial pasteurized milk supply.” Read that twice: the nation’s “pasteurized milk supply.” Unpasteurized “raw” milk, the consumption of which has been promoted by health conspiracy theorist and presumptive HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., can contain all manner of deadly pathogens, other bacteria and viruses, and a myriad of icky things found on an udder. In March, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institutes of Health (NIH) all issued warnings against drinking raw milk. Save yourself an upset tummy, or something much worse, and avoid the raw stuff. While you’re at it, send Louis Pasteur’s long departed soul a little “thank you” for creating one of the greatest advancements in food safety in human history.Edwards hails 'magical' feeling after Adebayo's mood-changing last-gasp winnerNone

Chinese tech firm ByteDance must sell TikTok's U.S. assets by Jan. 19 or the app that is used by 170 million Americans will face an unprecedented ban that jeopardizes billions in ad revenue. TikTok and ByteDance had argued that the law is unconstitutional and violates Americans' free speech rights. The ruling is expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. With TikTok's future in the U.S. uncertain, advertising executives said brands are maintaining their activities on the app, while ensuring they have a plan B. "Advertisers have not pulled back from TikTok, though several are developing contingency plans for potential reallocation of investment should there be a ban," said Jason Lee, executive vice president of brand safety at media agency Horizon Media. Horizon is working with clients to prepare for a variety of scenarios if the app is sold or banned, Lee said. Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook and Instagram, stands to gain the majority of TikTok's ad revenue if the app is banned, followed by Alphabet's YouTube, said Erik Huberman, CEO of marketing agency Hawke Media. Both companies have introduced short-form video features in the past few years to compete with TikTok. Still, "there's no decision to make until there's a decision to make," he said. TikTok's U.S. ad revenue is expected to reach $12.3 billion this year, according to estimates from research Emarketer. By comparison, analysts on average expect Meta Platforms' advertising revenue in 2024 to reach about $159 billion, according to LSEG data. The potential boon for rivals propelled stocks on Friday. Meta Platforms shares rose to an all-time record high of $629.78 earlier on Friday, and were up 2.3 per cent at $622.85 in late afternoon regular trading. Alphabet shares were up 1.1 per cent at $176.21. Trump Media & Technology, which operates the Truth Social app and is majority-owned by President-elect Donald Trump, rose 3 per cent to $34.78. NEW ORLEANS – A scruffy little fugitive is on the lam again in New Orleans, gaining fame as he outwits a tenacious band of citizens armed with night-vision binoculars, nets and a tranquilizer rifle. Scrim, a 17-pound mutt that's mostly terrier, has become a folk hero, inspiring tattoos, T-shirts and even a ballad as he eludes capture from the posse of volunteers. Recommended Videos And like any antihero, Scrim has a backstory: Rescued from semi-feral life at a trailer park and adopted from a shelter, the dog broke loose in April and scurried around the city until he was cornered in October and brought to a new home. Weeks later, he'd had enough. Scrim leaped out of a second-story window, a desperate act recorded in a now-viral video. Since then, despite a stream of daily sightings, he's roamed free. The dog’s fans include Myra and Steve Foster, who wrote “Ode to Scrim” to the tune of Ricky Nelson’s 1961 hit, “I’m a Travelin’ Man.” “I'm a travelin' dog and I've made a lot of stops/All over this town...” Leading the recapture effort is Michelle Cheramie, a 55-year-old former information technology professional. She lost everything — home, car, possessions — in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and in the aftermath, found her calling rescuing pets. “I was like, ‘This is what I should be doing,’” Cheramie said. “I was born to rescue.” She launched Zeus’ Rescues, a nonprofit shelter that now averages 600 cat and dog adoptions a year and offers free pet food to anyone who needs it. She helped Scrim find the home he first escaped from. It was Cheramie's window Scrim leaped from in November. She's resumed her relentless mission since then, posting flyers on telephone poles and logging social media updates on his reported whereabouts. She's invested thousands of dollars on wildlife cameras, thermal sensors and other gear. She took a course offered by the San Diego Zoo on the finer points of tranquilizing animals. And she's developed a network of volunteers — the kind of neighbors who are willing to grid-search a city at 3 a.m. “...And at every stop I own the heart, of at least one lovely ... " People like writer David W. Brown, who manages a crowd-sourced Google Map of all known Scrim sightings. He says the search has galvanized residents from all walks of life to come together. As they search for Scrim, they hand out supplies to people in need. “Being a member of the community is seeing problems and doing what you can to make life a little better for the people around here and the animals around you,” Brown said. And neighbors like Tammy Murray, who had to close her furniture store and lost her father to Parkinson's disease. This search, she says, got her mojo back. “Literally, for months, I’ve done nothing but hunt this dog,” said Murray, 53. “I feel like Wile E. Coyote on a daily basis with him.” Murray drives the Zeus' Rescues' van towards reported Scrim sightings. She also handles a tactical net launcher, which looks like an oversized flashlight and once misfired, shattering the van's window as Scrim sped away. After realizing Scrim had come to recognize the sound of the van's diesel engine, Murray switched to a Vespa scooter, for stealth. “...If you're ever in the 9th Ward stop and see/My cute little mini poodle ...” Near-misses have been tantalizing. The search party spotted Scrim napping beneath an elevated house, and wrapped construction netting around the perimeter, but an over-eager volunteer broke ranks and dashed forward, leaving an opening Scrim slipped through. Scrim's repeated escapades have prompted near-daily local media coverage and a devoted online following. Cheramie can relate. “We’re all running from something or to something. He's doing that too,” she said. Cheramie's team dreams of placing the pooch in a safe and loving environment. But a social media chorus growing under the hashtag #FreeScrim has other ideas — they say the runaway should be allowed a life of self-determination. The animal rescue volunteers consider that misguided. “The streets of New Orleans are not the place for a dog to be free,” Cheramie said. “It’s too dangerous.” "... and my Shar-Pei doll down in old Treme/Waits for my return ..." Scrim was a mess when Cheramie briefly recaptured him in October, with matted fur, missing teeth and a tattered ear. His trembling body was scraped and bruised, and punctured by multiple projectiles. A vet removed one, but decided against operating to take out a possible bullet. The dog initially appeared content indoors, sitting in Cheramie's lap or napping beside her bed. Then while she was out one day, Scrim chewed through a mesh screen, dropped 13 feet to the ground and squeezed through a gap in the fence, trotting away. Murray said Cheramie's four cats probably spooked him. “I wholeheartedly believe the gangster-ass cats were messing with him,” Murray said. Cheramie thinks they may have gotten territorial. Devastated but undeterred, the pair is reassessing where Scrim might fit best — maybe a secure animal sanctuary with big outdoor spaces where other dogs can keep him company. Somewhere, Murray says, “where he can just breathe and be.” ___ Brook is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — The suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO struggled with deputies and shouted Tuesday while arriving for a court appearance in Pennsylvania, a day after he was arrested at a McDonald’s and charged with murder. Luigi Nicholas Mangione emerged from a patrol car, spun toward reporters and shouted something partly unintelligible referring to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people” while deputies pushed him inside. Prosecutors were beginning to take steps to bring Mangione back to New York to face a murder charge while new details emerged about his life and how he was captured. The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family was charged with murder hours after he was arrested in the Manhattan killing of Brian Thompson , who led the United States’ largest medical insurance company. At the brief hearing, defense lawyer Thomas Dickey informed the court that Mangione will not waive extradition to New York but instead wants a hearing on the issue. Mangione was denied bail after prosecutors raised concerns about public safety and a potential flight risk. Mangione, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion but was quieted by his lawyer. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, according to police bulletin. Mangione remained jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Manhattan prosecutors have obtained an arrest warrant, a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania — about 230 miles (about 370 kilometers) west of New York City — after a McDonald's customer recognized him and notified an employee, authorities said. Officers found him sitting at a back table, wearing a blue medical mask and looking at a laptop, according to a Pennsylvania police criminal complaint. He initially gave them a fake ID, but when an officer asked Mangione whether he’d been to New York recently, he “became quiet and started to shake,” the complaint says. When he pulled his mask down at officers' request, “we knew that was our guy,” rookie Officer Tyler Frye said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald's while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and beanie. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was carrying a gun like the one used to kill Thompson and the same fake ID the shooter had used to check into a New York hostel, along with a passport and other fraudulent IDs. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione also had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America." A law enforcement official who wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said the document included a line in which Mangione claimed to have acted alone. “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” the document said, according to the official. It also had a line that said, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.” Pennsylvania prosecutor Peter Weeks said in court that Mangione was found with a passport and $10,000 in cash, $2,000 of it in foreign currency. Mangione disputed the amount. Thompson, 50, was killed Wednesday as he walked alone to a Manhattan hotel for an investor conference. Police quickly came to see the shooting as a targeted attack by a gunman who appeared to wait for Thompson, came up behind him and fired a 9 mm pistol. Investigators have said “delay,” “deny” and “depose” were written on ammunition found near Thompson's body. The words mimic “delay, deny, defend,” a phrase used to criticize the insurance industry . From surveillance video, New York investigators determined the shooter quickly fled the city, likely by bus. A grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist, Mangione is a cousin of a current Maryland state legislator. Valedictorian at his elite Baltimore prep school, he went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Maryland Del. Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.” From January to June 2022, Luigi Mangione lived at Surfbreak, a “co-living” space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Honolulu. Like other residents of the shared penthouse catering to remote workers, Mangione underwent a background check, said Josiah Ryan, a spokesperson for owner and founder R.J. Martin. “Luigi was just widely considered to be a great guy. There were no complaints,” Ryan said. "There was no sign that might point to these alleged crimes they’re saying he committed.” At Surfbreak, Martin learned Mangione had severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life, from surfing to romance, Ryan said. Mangione left Surfbreak to get surgery on the mainland, Ryan said, then later returned to Honolulu and rented an apartment. Martin stopped hearing from Mangione six months to a year ago. ___ Scolforo reported from Altoona and Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. That's where a good microphone becomes essential - especially if you're just starting out. With most good wireless microphones coming with a hefty price tag, there has been a growing demand for budget-friendly options that still deliver good performance. Enter the Crossbeats Clip M01, a microphone that claims to offer excellent audio quality at a price of around ₹ 3,000. But does it live up to the hype? I tested the Clip M01 extensively over the course of two months, and here's how it performed in the real world. Design and in-hand feel: Clip M01 comes in a plastic case with one receiver and two transmitters. There is also a USB-C and Lightning dongle inside the case to ensure connectivity with both Android and older iPhones. The case itself feels pretty cheap in hand and is also susceptible to a lot of fingerprints and scratches. I've had the Clip M01 with me for a couple of months, with the case usually lying around in an almirah or my bag, and it already looks completely worn out—which isn’t a good sign when it comes to durability. There’s also a glass-like finish on top of the case, which I initially assumed would reflect the charging percentage or connection status, but as it turns out, it’s just there for show. Instead, the charging percentage is tucked below the Crossbeats logo where it’s barely visible. Connectivity and usage: Connecting the M01 is relatively simple. Just plug the transmitter into your phone's Type-C or Lightning port and press the top button on the two microphones. Once the violet and blue lights appear on both microphones, it means they are connected to the phone. The two omnidirectional microphones can either be used in an interview-like setup or to achieve a stereo sound output. I tested the Clip M01 on two separate Android devices ( iQOO 13 and Vivo X200 ), and there were no issues with either capturing audio using a recording app or recording through the default camera app. The Clip M01 can record audio at a 48 kHz sampling rate and 24-bit depth. Crossbeats claims a range of 120 metres with the microphone, but I wouldn’t recommend taking it more than 30–40 metres away from the phone, at which point the audio starts becoming glitchy and the connection unstable. The microphone is capable of capturing decent-quality audio and can also reduce lighter background noises with ENC mode turned on. However, the Clip M01 comes with just a single noise reduction option that cannot be customised, unlike many other microphones in this range that offer three levels of noise reduction. Crossbeats claims a 10-hour battery life for the microphones and 40 hours of total charge with the case. While I wasn't able to confirm the exact battery life of the mics, I did notice the battery of the supplied case dropping significantly (around 10–12 percent in around 5 minutes) after putting the mics back following 30 minutes of use, which makes me sceptical of the battery life claims. Verdict: Should you buy Crossbeats Clip M01? With a starting price of ₹ 2,999, the Crossbeats Clip M01 can be a tempting option for someone just starting out on their content creation journey. However, the durability of the supplied case, the lack of customizable noise reduction options, and concerns about battery life prevent me from fully recommending these microphones as a definitive buy.House Passes Bill Requiring Agencies to Share Custom Source Codes

Shopping at Monoprix-Doha Festival City is set to become a pleasant experience for people with sensory sensitivities, thanks to the sensory friendly hours that offer an inclusive shopping environment. In collaboration with Step by Step Centre for Special Needs, Monoprix-Doha Festival City launched yesterday the initiative to provide a sensory-friendly shopping experience from 1pm-3pm on weekdays and from 8am-10am on Fridays and Saturdays. The initiative is part of the inclusion policy of Monoprix and an awareness campaign by Step By Step Centre, aimed at creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. “The initiative is part of the efforts to innovatively give back to the community,” said Monoprix country manager Chadi Bou Antoun. “This is an engagement with the people who need us.” “It’s a solution for the parents and a relief for the families who face difficulties while shopping with people with sensory sensitivities,” he said. “It’s a commitment. It’s not entertainment, but an activity that should be in place.” He added that the outlet staff members are trained to deal with the persons with sensory disabilities. Monoprix rolled out the initiative earlier at the Iconic 2022 outlet at Al Waab, where it is evoking a good response from customers. Monoprix-Doha Festival City store manager Khalid El Khatouri said that the outlet showcases its commitment towards persons with disabilities and leaves a message of inclusiveness by implementing the initiative. The sensory hours include dimming of store lights, turning off music and announcements over the PA (public address system) and mitigating cash register noise. Staff members are also encouraged to speak more softly and not perform certain tasks, like gathering grocery carts. The initiative is implemented as part of Step By Step Centre’s outreach initiative, Building Bridges, where the centre advocates inclusiveness in public places. “Bright lights and loud noises can make shopping tough for persons with sensory disabilities,” said Step By Step Group chief executive and managing director Nasreen Sharif. “Our aim is to ensure them hassle-free shopping experience.” “The idea of sensory-friendly shopping hours is a solution, and the dedicated hours ensure a calmer and more inclusive shopping experience for these individuals,” she said, adding that this kind of initiative will keep the persons with disabilities engaged. “A friendly shopping experience can inspire and motivate them while developing multiple social and vocational skills,” Sharif said, adding that efforts are being taken to spread the initiative to more shopping places across Qatar to achieve the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030. “Unfamiliar faces and unfamiliar voices, the sound of trolleys moving, the bright lights, and music playing in the background are just some of the challenges experienced by persons with special needs,” said parent Navash Appalasamy. “These sensory hours will create an inclusive environment for neurodivergent individuals.” He noted that the initiative reaffirms that the special needs community is fully supported. The event also showcased products made by students of Step By Step Centre.
