Tom Yeung here with this week’s Sunday Digest . Many of you will know that I am a relatively conservative investor. I pay close attention to a company’s long-term profitability, and to me, cash flow is king. There’s nothing wrong with earning 10% dividends from a high-quality stock. But sometimes, growth is so obvious that it’s hard to ignore. In February, I noted that Nvidia Corp. ( NVDA ) should be worth a split-adjusted $160 by 2027 . It’s since doubled in price from $72 to $144. And the excitement surrounding Dogecoin ( DOGE-USD ) in 2021 was so bananas that I suggested throwing in $500 just to see where the $0.10 crypto would go. (The answer was $0.64.) Some have even made careers from these high-volatility bets. Jonathan Rose , our options expert colleague at Masters in Trading , has generated profits of 16%... 48%... 156%... 545%... even 1,306%... all within six-and-a-half-hour periods. He does this by trading options that are expiring today , rather than those expiring a year or more from now. These “zero-day options” are some of the fastest-growing segments of financial markets today. And the astonishing thing is that he trades these moonshots while limiting his downside risk. Jonathan just kicked off a four-day free Strategy Summit... and it’s not too late to join in . Tomorrow’s session, at 11 a.m. ET, includes LIVE market analysis. And in the live grand finale session on Tuesday, he’ll reveal his entire five-step strategy to finding those one-day winners. These sessions are free to attend. To access them all – including the grand finale session on Tuesday – simply register here . The Equity Stub Some firms are risky because they’re a tiny equity stub built on top of a mountain of debt. If a company has just $1 of equity for every $4 of debt, every 10% increase in enterprise value will raise stock prices by 50%. That’s the situation Sabre Corp. ( SABR ) now finds itself in. The highly indebted firm is one of the world’s three operators of the Global Distribution System ( GDS ), the computerized network that links airline and hotel reservations all together. It’s how websites like Google Flights and Kayak can “see” flight availability in real time. Even airlines use the GDS system to help book stranded passengers onto rival carriers. On the positive side for Sabre, there’s no good alternative to the GDS system. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) rolled out a rival product a decade ago, but their decentralized system turned out to be far too slow. (It needed to contact every airline each time someone tried to book a flight.) That’s allowed GDS companies to operate with enormous profit margins with virtually no competition. However, in the mid-2000s, private equity firms decided they could do even better. By leveraging up companies like Sabre with debt, they thought they could earn high returns on the GDS business, pay back low interest rates, and profit from the difference. It worked for a while... and then the Covid-19 pandemic came. Virtually overnight, Sabre’s shares went from the $20-$30 range into the single digits. It continues to trade at $3.60 today, with a now-smaller profit pool being eaten up by ruinously high interest payments. That’s where my first “moonshot” bet comes in. We know that travel is coming back. According to the IATA, air travel flipped back above its pre-Covid levels earlier this year and is set to surge another 8% in 2025. Figures from Sabre also show an increase of booking revenues, with total sales up almost threefold since 2020. The company is now on track to covering its $500 million annual interest payments. Analysts expect Sabre will generate $86 million in net income next year (after interest), compared to a $57 million loss in 2024. This opens the door to even greater gains down the road. Sabre could use its newfound profitability to repay maturing debts and refinance others on better terms. We also know that flipping from negative profits to positive is a historically bullish sign, and Sabre is on track to do exactly that. Three Turnarounds Meanwhile, other moonshots are attractive because they present turnaround opportunities for 2025. Here are three companies with that kind of potential... 1. Stratasys Ltd. ( SSYS ) is a Minnesota-based a leader in 3D printing. Over the past five years, it has snapped up other top players like RPS for stereolithography, XAAR for powder-based printing, and others to grow its technological lead. Stratasys’s flagship F3300 printer is now one of the fastest machines in its price class, and analysts expect 2024 to be a down year before a significant return to growth. Net profits are expected to surge tenfold to $26 million next year. The threat of 20% across-the-board tariffs could send that figure even higher. If President Donald Trump does implement steep import barriers, many American manufacturers would suddenly find themselves forced to buy domestically produced parts. Stratasys remains far more profitable than its chief rival, 3D Systems Corp, ( DDD ), and we know from history that it pays to buy the best when turnarounds are underway. 2. Evolv Technologies Holdings Inc. ( EVLV ) saw shares plummet 50% this fall after the security company announced an internal investigation into its accounting practices. Several high-profile managers had inappropriately logged revenues, resulting in $4 million to $6 million of sales being recorded too early. This now presents a compelling opportunity to invest in one of America’s top moonshot bets. Evolv is a Massachusetts-based firm that builds AI-powered scanning “gates” that detect hidden weapons. Hundreds of stadiums, schools, and event spaces already use Evolv’s products, and they are far faster than traditional metal detectors because users can simply walk through without taking metal items out of their pockets. Evolv uses millimeter-wave technologies similar to those currently used by airports. The potential for new gun-friendly laws now creates a significant opportunity for growth. The Trump administration will likely challenge various states’ conceal-carry bans, and the greater prevalence of hidden weapons will increase demand for Evolv’s products. The company is also currently testing its products with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). If approved for commercial airport use, that could become an unexpected windfall. 3. UiPath Inc. ( PATH ). Shares of this AI firm have fallen 83% since going public in 2021 on fears of slowing growth and significant management turnover. The company’s success during the Covid-19 work-from-home boom failed to repeat during more “normal” periods. However, analysts now forecast a return to accelerating growth in calendar 2025. Companies are being increasingly pressured to save money using AI, and UiPath’s products are recognized by experts as being top tier. Gartner calls UiPath the leading visionary of business automation. The growth trend will likely accelerate through 2025 as AI begins to become “smarter” than the average person. OpenAI’s latest “o1-preview” model recently surpassed humans on the IQ test, and these innovations will create greater demands for UiPath’s suite of automation products. No matter how smart AI gets, enterprises will need firms like UiPath to help implement these tools. Betting on Volatility Finally, we all know that incoming president Donald Trump is a disruptor. The Washington outsider spent his first term shaking up the status quo. To the delight of his fans and the horror of his critics, Trump has promised more of the same for his second term. That creates an incredible amount of uncertainty around highly regulated businesses, particularly healthcare. Consider Pfizer Inc. ( PFE ) , a company that our global macro specialist, Eric Fry , recently recommended his Fry’s Investment Report members sell. That came after Donald Trump put forward Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services ( HHS ). As I noted earlier this week : Either way, we know that Pfizer won’t trade in its $25 range forever. By 2026, it likely will have either shot the moon or crashed to Earth. To benefit from this uncertainty, traders look into at-the-market 2026 Pfizer straddles – an options strategy that will pay off if PFE shares move outside of a $19.50-$30.50 range by January 2026. If PFE shares rise to $35 as they did during Trump’s first term, traders will see a 100% payoff. And if the stock dips to $15, then traders also get a 100% profit. (A straddle can also pay off before 2026 if volatility rises far enough.) The best part is that these straddles are currently trading for cheap, thanks to low market volatility. The VIX Index has dropped a quarter since the election, bringing down the cost of 2026 straddles from the $7 to $9 range to just $5.50. A Way for Even Faster Gains Of course, not everyone will enjoy waiting around for the next year for Pfizer straddles to mature or 3D printing firms to turn around. Trump isn’t set to take office until January, and we won’t know the administration’s policies for several more months after that. That’s why I think it’s essential to sign up for these free presentations by Jonathan Rose , where he outlines his strategy for profiting from zero-day options. According to JPMorgan Chase, around $1 trillion zero-day options now exchange hands daily. And when we start seeing that kind of money flow into a specific corner of the market – it should pique our interest. Because these areas tend to be where you find the most dramatic gains. Of course, these big potential rewards come with equally big perils. And that’s why you need a proven game plan that manages the downside risk while leaving the door open for upside gains. Indiana’s next governor has big plans for the executive office, as shared with the Indiana Capital Chronicle on Thursday, a proposal that would trim the his cabinet to include eight policy secretaries aligned with core governing areas. Governor-elect Mike Braun’s new cabinet will seek to model “efficiency, accountability and communication in state government,” according to the release. Cabinet members will include Braun, incoming Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, Braun’s chief of staff, the superintendent of state police, the adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard and secretaries over eight policy areas or “verticals.” Secretaries could also serve as agency heads, meaning not every role will need to be filled by a new hire, but each will be “empower(ed) ... to drive progress within their vertical.” Related agencies will be grouped together into their policy areas, which include topics such as commerce, education, and health and family services. Earlier this month, Braun tapped his transition team and announced he would have 12 councils evaluating key areas. “This new cabinet model will allow us to be laser-focused on delivering results for Hoosiers,” Braun said in the release. “By aligning agencies and reorganizing the executive branch, we can drive accountability for leaders and agencies, promote better coordination and communication between our administration and the Indiana General Assembly, and create efficiency across state government.” Cabinet positions will include: • A Secretary of Management and Budget will be responsible for developing a budget aligned with the governor’s vision and serving as operational oversight for other secretaries. • Eighteen agencies and departments will report to this person, including the Inspector General, the Public Retirement System and the State Budget Agency. • A Secretary of Commerce will oversee the state’s economic development plan. • Eight agencies and departments will report to this person, including the Indiana Economic Development Corp. the Department of Workforce Development, the Hoosier Lottery and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. • A Secretary of Health and Family Services will coordinate “constituent-facing health and well-being services” and oversee public health programs. The four reporting agencies include the Department of Health, the Family and Social Services Administration, the Department of Child Services and the Department of Veteran Affairs. A Secretary of Public Safety will oversee law enforcement, emergency preparedness and public safety. Eight agencies and departments will report to this role, including the Department of Correction, Homeland Security and the Office of School Safety. A Secretary of Energy and Natural Resources will be responsible for energy and recreation policy as well as “sustainable economic development.” Seven agencies and departments will report to this role, including the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Environmental Management and the Utility Regulatory Commission. A Secretary of Education will oversee programming from pre-K to college. The seven reporting agencies and departments include the Department of Education, the Commission for Higher Education and the Charter School Board. A Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure, which also includes oversight of broadband and other quality of life measures. Four agencies will report to this role, including the Department of Transportation, the Northwest IN Regional Development Authority, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Broadband Office. A Secretary of Business Affairs who will manage Indiana’s regulatory framework to ensure “businesses and industries operate safely, ethically and efficiently.” Eleven agencies and departments will report to this position, including the Department of Insurance, the Department of Labor, the Professional Licensing Agency and the Gaming Commission. Both the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the Office of Community and Rural Affairs will continue to be led by the lieutenant governor, as outlined by statute. Braun’s chief of staff will set the agenda for the cabinet, which will meet “frequently.” Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Cabinet, in contrast, has more traditionally included major agency heads rather than policy-aligned “verticals.” A two-year-old post on the state’s website includes more than two dozen agencies, keeping departments like the Family and Social Services Administration separate from the Department of Health, for example. The New York Yankees and Max Fried are in agreement on a 8-year $218 million deal according to Jeff Passan, as Plan B for the Bronx Bombers is underway. Last season Fried posted a 3.25 ERA across 29 starts with the Atlanta Braves, striking out 166 batters across 174.1 innings pitched. He’s spent his entire Major League career as a Brave, posting a 3.07 ERA across 884.1 innings, and being one of the best pitchers in the sport since 2020. His 2.81 ERA over that five-year window is the best for any starting pitcher in baseball with at least 500 innings pitched. With Fried at the helm, the Bronx Bombers have shored up their rotation and can now pivot to their lineup, which will need some serious heavy lifting with Juan Soto headed to the Mets. Max Fried Adds Dominant Left-Handed Arm to Yankees’ Rotation The New York Yankees were going to be aggressively shopping on the market for potential Plan B options, and Max Fried matches up with their rotation needs very well. A savvy left-hander who boasts a deep repertoire of pitches, he can throw three different fastballs, two different sliders, and a changeup as well. Last season he didn’t use a single pitch above 33% of the time, as he relies on deception and command to keep hitters off-balance and efficiently get outs. Low walk rates and high groundball rates are at the center of Max Fried’s style of pitching, as he walked just 6.3% of batters faced from 2020-2024 while having a 54.2% groundball rate. His ability to throw so many different pitches makes him a nightmare for hitters to face, as Fried threw all seven of his pitches at least 130 times in 2024. The way he pitches should bode well for him at Yankee Stadium, where he would have allowed just 18 home runs instead of 22 over the last three seasons if he pitched all of his games there. With Fried now under contract, the Yankees should make it a priority to shore up their infield defense, which they might be able to do with their interest in Christian Walker. Christian Walker, who the Yankees have renewed conversations with at the Winter Meetings, is a premium defensive player who would help convert Max Fried’s groundballs into outs. The Yankees have set their sights on various pivot avenues, and while Fried and Walker would cost the team draft compensation because of the Qualifying Offer, the team is getting a fourth-round pick back for Juan Soto that should help offset that. With Soto in Queens, the Yankees have plenty of work to do to ensure that their roster can go out and compete for a World Series in 2025, and Fried is a step in the right direction. His deal is pending a physical, as the Yankees await those medical reports before they officially announce this deal. CHARLOTTE — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Panthers: Rookie TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated for a neck injury and released . He landed awkwardly on his head after making a catch near the end of the second quarter. Chiefs: Host Las Vegas on Friday. Panthers: Host Tampa Bay next Sunday. NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s recent dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his visit to Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral were not just exercises in policy and diplomacy. They were also prime trolling opportunities for Trump. Throughout his first term in the White House and during his campaign to return, Trump has spun out countless provocative, antagonizing and mocking statements. There were his belittling nicknames for political opponents, his impressions of other political figures and the plentiful memes he shared on social media. Now that’s he’s preparing to return to the Oval Office, Trump is back at it, and his trolling is attracting more attention — and eyerolls. On Sunday, Trump turned a photo of himself seated near a smiling first lady Jill Biden at the Notre Dame ceremony into a social media promo for his new perfume and cologne line, with the tag line, “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist!” The first lady’s office declined to comment. When Trudeau hastily flew to Florida to meet with Trump last month over the president-elect’s threat to impose a 25% tax on all Canadian products entering the U.S., the Republican tossed out the idea that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. The Canadians passed off the comment as a joke, but Trump has continued to play up the dig, including in a post Tuesday morning on his social media network referring to the prime minister as “Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” After decades as an entertainer and tabloid fixture, Trump has a flair for the provocative that is aimed at attracting attention and, in his most recent incarnation as a politician, mobilizing fans. He has long relished poking at his opponents, both to demean and minimize them and to delight supporters who share his irreverent comments and posts widely online and cheer for them in person. Trump, to the joy of his fans, first publicly needled Canada on his social media network a week ago when he posted an AI-generated image that showed him standing on a mountain with a Canadian flag next to him and the caption “Oh Canada!” After his latest post, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday: “It sounds like we’re living in a episode of South Park.” Trudeau said earlier this week that when it comes to Trump, “his approach will often be to challenge people, to destabilize a negotiating partner, to offer uncertainty and even sometimes a bit of chaos into the well established hallways of democracies and institutions and one of the most important things for us to do is not to freak out, not to panic.” Even Thanksgiving dinner isn’t a trolling-free zone for Trump’s adversaries. On Thanksgiving Day, Trump posted a movie clip from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” with President Joe Biden and other Democrats’ faces superimposed on the characters in a spoof of the turkey-carving scene. The video shows Trump appearing to explode out of the turkey in a swirl of purple sparks, with the former president stiffly dancing to one of his favorite songs, Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” In his most recent presidential campaign, Trump mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, refusing to call his GOP primary opponent by his real name and instead dubbing him “Ron DeSanctimonious.” He added, for good measure, in a post on his Truth Social network: “I will never call Ron DeSanctimonious ‘Meatball’ Ron, as the Fake News is insisting I will.” As he campaigned against Biden, Trump taunted him in online posts and with comments and impressions at his rallies, deriding the president over his intellect, his walk, his golf game and even his beach body. After Vice President Kamala Harris took over Biden’s spot as the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly suggested she never worked at McDonalds while in college. Trump, true to form, turned his mocking into a spectacle by appearing at a Pennsylvania McDonalds in October, when he manned the fries station and held an impromptu news conference from the restaurant drive-thru. Trump’s team thinks people should get a sense of humor. “President Trump is a master at messaging and he’s always relatable to the average person, whereas many media members take themselves too seriously and have no concept of anything else other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s communications director. “President Trump will Make America Great Again and we are getting back to a sense of optimism after a tumultuous four years.” Though both the Biden and Harris campaigns created and shared memes and launched other stunts to respond to Trump’s taunts, so far America’s neighbors to the north are not taking the bait. “I don’t think we should necessarily look on Truth Social for public policy,” Miller said. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Gerald Butts, a former top adviser to Trudeau and a close friend, said Trump brought up the 51st state line to Trudeau repeatedly during Trump’s first term in office. “Oh God,” Butts said Tuesday, “At least a half dozen times.” “This is who he is and what he does. He’s trying to destabilize everybody and make people anxious,” Butts said. “He’s trying to get people on the defensive and anxious and therefore willing to do things they wouldn’t otherwise entertain if they had their wits about them. I don’t know why anybody is surprised by it.” ___ Gillies reported from Toronto. Associated Press writer Darlene Superville contributed to this report. Advertisement Advertisement
Manhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here's the latest: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says “violence to combat any sort of corporate greed is unacceptable” and the White House will “continue to condemn any form of violence.” She declined to comment on the investigation into the Dec. 4 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson or reports that writings belonging to the suspect, Luigi Mangione, said insurance companies care more about profits than their customers. “This is horrific,” Jean-Pierre said of the fatal shooting of Thompson as he walked in Manhattan. He didn’t appear to say anything as deputies led him to a waiting car outside. “I’m deeply grateful to the men and women of law enforcement whose efforts to solve the horrific murder of Brian Thompson led to the arrest of a suspect in Pennsylvania,” Gov. Hochul said in the statement. “I am coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office and will sign a request for a governor’s warrant to ensure this individual is tried and held accountable. Public safety is my top priority and I’ll do everything in my power to keep the streets of New York safe.” That’s according to a spokesperson for the governor who said Gov. Hochul will do it as soon as possible. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation’s top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. ▶ Read more about Luigi Mangione Peter Weeks, the Blair County district attorney, says he’ll work with New York officials to try to return suspect Luigi Mangione there to face charges. Weeks said the New York charges are “more serious” than in Blair County. “We believe their charges take precedent,” Weeks said, promising to do what’s needed to accommodate New York’s prosecution first. Weeks spoke to reporters after a brief hearing at which a defense lawyer said Mangione will fight extradition. The defense asked for a hearing on the issue. In the meantime, Mangione will be detained at a state prison in western Pennsylvania. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said Tuesday it will seek a Governor’s warrant to secure Mangione’s extradition to Manhattan. Under state law, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul can issue a warrant of arrest demanding Mangione’s return to the state. Such a warrant must recite the facts necessary to the validity of its issuance and be sealed with the state seal. It would then be presented to law enforcement in Pennsylvania to expedite Mangione’s return to New York. But Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks says it won’t be a substantial barrier to returning Mangione to New York. He noted that defendants contest extradition “all the time,” including in simple retail theft cases. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Mangione will continue to be housed at a state prison in Huntingdon. He has 14 days to challenge the detention. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor’s warrant out of New York. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion, but was quieted by his lawyer. Luigi Mangione, 26, has also been denied bail at a brief court hearing in western Pennsylvania. He has 14 days to challenge the bail decision. That’s with some intervention from owner Elon Musk. The account, which hasn’t posted since June, was briefly suspended by X. But after a user inquired about it in a post Monday, Musk responded “This happened without my knowledge. Looking into it.” The account was later reinstated. Other social media companies such as Meta have removed his accounts. According to X rules, the platform removes “any accounts maintained by individual perpetrators of terrorist, violent extremist, or mass violent attacks, as well as any accounts glorifying the perpetrator(s), or dedicated to sharing manifestos and/or third party links where related content is hosted.” Mangione is not accused of perpetrating a terrorist or mass attack — he has been charged with murder — and his account doesn’t appear to share any writings about the case. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. The warrant on murder and other charges is a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. In court papers made public Tuesday, a New York City police detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Mangione to the killing, including surveillance footage and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel on Nov. 24. Police officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, found that ID when they arrested Mangione on Monday. Mangione doesn’t yet have a lawyer who can speak on his behalf, court officials said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and ski cap. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. Mangione’s cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione, announced Tuesday morning that he’s postponing a fundraiser planned later this week at the Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore, which was purchased by the Mangione family in 1986. “Because of the nature of this terrible situation involving my Cousin I do not believe it is appropriate to hold my fundraising event scheduled for this Thursday at Hayfields,” Nino Mangione said in a social media post. “I want to thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. My family and I are heartbroken and ask that you remember the family of Mr. Thompson in your prayers. Thank you.” Officers used New York City’s muscular surveillance system . Investigators analyzed DNA samples, fingerprints and internet addresses. Police went door to door looking for witnesses. When an arrest came five days later , those sprawling investigative efforts shared credit with an alert civilian’s instincts. A customer at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania noticed another patron who resembled the man in the oblique security-camera photos New York police had publicized. He remains jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. By late Monday evening, prosecutors in Manhattan had added a charge of murder, according to an online court docket. It’s unclear whether Luigi Nicholas Mangione has an attorney who can comment on the allegations. Asked at Monday’s arraignment whether he needed a public defender, Mangione asked whether he could “answer that at a future date.”

HASA ENERGY signs historic ESCO agreement with Oman’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, /PRNewswire/ -- Alpheus Medical, Inc., a private, clinical-stage oncology company pioneering sonodynamic therapy (SDT) for the treatment of solid body cancers, today announced positive results from their Phase 1/2 clinical trial in patients with recurrent or refractory high-grade gliomas. The company's proprietary therapy demonstrated a strong safety profile and extended median overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) compared to historical data. The data were presented by , MD, at the 2024 Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO) Annual Meeting. "Glioblastomas are the most common and aggressive primary brain cancer, presenting a devasting diagnosis for patients and their familes," said , MD, Clinical Director of the Center for Neuro-Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and member of the Alpheus Medical Scientific Advisory Board. "Current treatment options are limited and often ineffective due to the diffuse spread of the disease across the blood-brain barrier and often across the entire hemisphere, making it universally fatal with a rapid timeline. The early clinical results of Alpheus's therapy are promising, offering hope for this new approach. I look forward to further exploring the potential benefits of their SDT therapy for this patient population who is in critical need of an effective solution." Alpheus Medical's non-invasive SDT treatment, which can be delivered in an outpatient setting, combines low-intensity diffuse ultrasound (LIDU ) with oral 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) to target and kill cancer cells across the entire hemisphere without the need for imaging or sedation. Key findings from the study include: "In addition to the strong safety data and early indications of efficacy, Alpheus' non-invasive SDT therapy stands out for its ease of use - a significant improvement over the uncomfortable and often toxic treatments currently available for this rapidly fatal condition," stated Dr. Schulder, Director of the Brain Tumor Center at Northwell Health, and one of the trial's primary investigators. "We look forward to expanding the ability for patients to receive this promising therapy." The Phase 1/2 trial ( ) is an open-label, multicenter, duration-escalation study evaluating the safety, optimal dose, and efficacy of Alpheus Medical's proprietary SDT platform. Twelve patients were enrolled across three cohorts, with treatment durations escalating to 60, 90, and 120 minutes per monthly session. The company plans to initiate a randomized, controlled trial at multiple centers across the U.S. in 2025.
