A ground squirrel with cheeks stuffed with nuts, seeds or grains, is a common sight. But a new study provides the first evidence that California ground squirrels also hunt, kill and eat voles. The study, led by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UC Davis, is the first to chronicle widespread carnivorous behavior among squirrels. Published in the Journal of Ethology, the study fundamentally changes our understanding of ground squirrels. It suggests that what was considered a granivorous species actually is an opportunistic omnivore and more flexible in its diet than previously assumed. The observations occurred in 2024 — the 12th year of the Long-term Behavioral Ecology of California Ground Squirrels Project conducted at Briones Regional Park in Contra Costa County. Out of 74 observed interactions with voles between June and July, 42% involved active hunting of these small rodents by ground squirrels. “This was shocking,” said lead author Jennifer E. Smith, an associate professor of biology at UW-Eau Claire who leads the long-term ground squirrels project with Sonja Wild of UC Davis. “We had never seen this behavior before. Squirrels are one of the most familiar animals to people. We see them right outside our windows; we interact with them regularly. Yet here’s this never-before-encountered-in-science behavior that sheds light on the fact that there’s so much more to learn about the natural history of the world around us.” Wild has observed hundreds of squirrels in nature and yet, even for her, when the undergraduate students came in from field work and told her what they had witnessed, she said, “No, I’m not sure what you’re referring to.” Then she watched the video. “I could barely believe my eyes,” said Wild, a postdoctoral research fellow in the UC Davis Environmental Science and Policy department. “From then, we saw that behavior almost every day. Once we started looking, we saw it everywhere.” Through videos, photos and direct observations at the regional park, the authors documented California ground squirrels of all ages and genders hunting, eating and competing over vole prey between June 10 and July 30. The squirrels’ carnivorous summer behavior peaked during the first two weeks of July, coinciding with an explosion in vole numbers at the park reported by citizen scientists on iNaturalist. This suggests that the squirrels’ hunting behavior emerged alongside a temporary increase in the availability of prey, the study said. The scientists didn’t observe the squirrels hunting other mammals. “The fact that California ground squirrels are behaviorally flexible and can respond to changes in food availability might help them persist in environments rapidly changing due to the presence of humans,” Wild said. Smith added that many species, including the California ground squirrel, are “incredible opportunists.” From raccoons and coyotes to spotted hyenas and humans, the flexibility these mammals apply to their hunting strategies help them change and adapt with the human landscape. “Through this collaboration and the data coming in, we’re able to document this widespread behavior that we had no idea was going on,” Smith said. “Digital technology can inform the science, but there’s no replacement for going out there and witnessing the behavior because what animals are doing always surprises us.” The researchers said many questions remain unanswered, including how widespread the hunting behavior is among squirrels, whether and how it is passed down from parent to pup, and how it effects ecological processes. The authors are also excited to return to the field next summer to see what impact, if any, this year’s vole hunting may have on squirrel reproduction compared to the past decade. Co-authors include Joey Ingbretson, Mackenzie Miner, Ella Oestreicher, Mari Podas, Tia Ravara, Lupin Teles and Jada Wahl of UW-Eau Claire and Lucy Todd of UC Davis. Several co-authors conducted field work during their undergraduate studies. Their work was partly funded by the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, Diversity Mentoring Program and Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates. There were several under the radar free agents the Maple Leafs could have signed, and while they did a good job with their signings, they could have had a disaster. Brad Treliving should be commended for the signings he made during the offseason. Adding Anthony Stolarz, Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz has transformed the team into a solid contender for an Eastern Conference Championship. But he also needs to be commended for the things he didn't do. With a lot of questions surrounding John Tavares' ability this season, there was a lot of talk about signing forward Chandler Stephenson as the next second-line center. Chandler Stephenson's Failed Season Whether it's pressure coming into a new team, or trying to play up to contractual expectations, Stephenson has been pretty bad for Seattle this season. It looks like Toronto avoided a complete meltdown both on and off the ice, as it's clear Stephenson was overpaid in the summer. While he does have 23 points this season, he's fallen off a cliff in nearly every metric. He doesn't help on the powerplay, he doesn't do anything on the penalty kill, and given his production this year is worth only 1% WAR (wins above replacement) going from one of one of the most consistent bottom-six contributors to someone who barely makes an impact. The fact he was paid $6.25M for the next seven years is egregious looking at it, and if he doesn't pay up he may go the way of Pierre Engvall and go through waivers, and be potentially on the way out as quick as he came in. Once a standout with Vegas, he doesn't offer the same offensive or defensive capabilities and for a middling Kraken team sitting near the bottom of the Pacific Division; that's not good enough. For what it's worth, Tavares has come out this season and shown he looks 10 years younger, registering 17 goals and 17 assists in 34 games; being a point-per-game producer compared to Stephenson's 0.65 PPG and rewarded Leafs fans for their belief in him to still be their leader even without the C. Brad Treliving and Toronto avoided disaster with Chandler Stephenson. They made the smart move by adding goaltending and defense and decided the risk of signing Stephenson wasn't worth the potential reward. The failed governance that plagued Syria is not unique. It is a power model that has devastated the whole region. On December 8, after a rapid offensive that lasted less than two weeks, Syrian opposition forces entered Damascus and declared the end of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The Syrian president and his family are believed to have flown out in an unknown direction just before the rebels entered the capital. The uprising against the Syrian government that ended the half-century of al-Assad family rule should be seen as among the most important political turning points in the modern Arab region since the end of World War II and the creation of Israel in 1948. It marks a definitive break with the legacy since the 1950s of military-anchored Arab autocrats who have long dominated and ravaged Arab societies. Many rightly celebrate the overthrow of al-Assad, and many others wonder what will happen next given the involvement of various local and external powers in Syria. The Syrian people know they want a decent life, to be treated with respect and to be heard. We should humbly watch them bring a new and stable order to their country and stop the Western silliness of analysing what the length of a beard means or entertaining conspiracy theories. It is critical now to reflect on what the devastating tale of Syrian governance and civil war mean. Syria under the Assads was neither unique nor the work of just a few local brutes. Rather, it is an example of the widespread legacy of heavy-handed, often vicious, Arab state power that has ravaged the region and demeaned its people for half a century, with the help of regional and great powers and assorted nongovernmental groups. The al-Assad regime was the longest-lasting military-based, foreign-backed, and family-anchored autocratic government to dominate the Arab region, which devastated its people, economy, and national integrity. The Syrian experience reveals all the debilitating hallmarks of shared Arab autocracy, which persist widely and must be systematically rooted out of our societies. These include a lack of genuine pluralism and accountability through credible participatory institutions; top-heavy rule anchored in military and police brutality, mass imprisonment, torture, and death; centralised economic planning that breeds corruption among the elite and deep quality-of-life disparities across the land; and no structural connections between the citizens and the state that could generate policies that reflect the consent and will of the governed. The 1952 Egyptian revolution of Gamal Abdel Nasser initiated the destructive legacy of military-run Arab governance, which expanded more quickly after Israel’s 1967 defeat of Arab armies. Bashar al-Assad’s father, Hafez, was among a cohort of Arab officers who seized power in the following two decades in various Arab countries and proceeded to drive them into the ground. These self-imposed officers could neither wage war nor govern effectively during their decades of rule. As a result, since the 1990s, most Arabs outside the few wealthy oil producers have suffered steady declines in their opportunities for decent education and healthcare, jobs, access to sufficient food, water, and electricity, and other basic necessities. Regional surveys reveal over and over again that a small percentage of Arabs (mostly in the oil-producing states and among small elites elsewhere) live comfortable lives, while the majority enjoy neither political rights nor a decent material life. Inequality and poverty within Arab societies continue to rise. Through repression, Arab governments have transformed their citizens into passive, voiceless, impotent consumers, many of whom seek to or do emigrate. Repression has generated intense anger, fear, and desperation among their citizens. They have responded by challenging the state, joining its corrupt system, or retreating from it into smaller tribal, religious, or ideological groups they form to protect themselves and survive in the face of dangers from their own state, Israel, or foreign powers. The most potent Arab movements that challenged the militarised power model were Islamist – both armed and peaceful. In Syria, when a peaceful protest movement was met with brutal military force, the uprising quickly transformed into a civil conflict, which undermined national cohesion, allowed the proliferation of armed groups and ushered in interference from foreign powers. What has happened in Syria should be a wake-up call for all Arab autocrats. The region cannot endure long the reality that not a single Arab state has been credibly validated by its own people through constitutional or electoral means. I’ve experienced and journalistically chronicled the conditions of Arab societies and citizens for over half a century, and I conclude that not a single Arab country has passed the four cardinal tests of stable statehood, genuine sovereignty, citizenship, and sustained and equitable human development. We would be fools to miss the signals that Syria sends the world about every ordinary citizen’s indomitable will to live in freedom and dignity. And we would be complicit in denying these to Arabs if we continue business as usual with the existing state and economic systems that have mostly failed their people. These methods, widely known for their use in hospital MRI scans to produce detailed images of the human body, have proven equally valuable in unraveling the secrets of Europe's archaeological treasures. Promising applications are rapidly expanding into a wide range of fields. The samples are from the wooden poles of the pier of an ancient Roman harbor discovered during excavations for a new metro line in Naples, Italy, which began in 2004. The discoveries also moved the route of the metro line, which now runs underneath the archaeological treasures. The development of the discovered port tells an interesting story of the Roman Empire. "It is rare that ancient organic wooden structures are found at all, as they usually degrade over time unless they are in a humid environment. The exceptional discovery was made possible by the aquifer that has preserved the pier structures for centuries," says Otto Mankinen, a researcher at the University of Oulu. NMR spectroscopy, or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, is based on radio-frequency radiation, so it does not damage the target at all. Medical MRI in hospitals is one of the well-known applications of NMR spectroscopy. The technique exploits the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei to obtain very precise information about the structure and properties of matter. The non-invasive nature of NMR measurements is also particularly important when examining archaeologically valuable samples or, for example, paintings for restoration. Many other methods can damage the sample, such as X-ray or light microscopy , which often also requires slicing of the sample, a destructive and challenging process when dealing with fragile and spongy underwater wood remains. If they are lifted into the air, activated decomposers can destroy the samples or they can decay. In the new study, now published in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics , wood samples were preserved under similar conditions where they spent centuries. The team aimed to find out how wood behaves and survives in water and to reconstruct the changes caused by decay, and to make a comprehensive analysis of the structure and changes in archaeological wood remains. The study is one of the first to combine four different NMR techniques: relaxometry, micro-imaging, diffusometry and cryoporometry. Archaeological samples of spruce, chestnut and maple were compared with fresh wood material from the same species. "Knowledge of structural preservation is essential and important. It helps to find new ways to ensure that archaeologically valuable heritage is preserved for future generations ," says Mankinen. "In the future, the method needs to be developed with a larger number of samples of coniferous and deciduous trees. These can be very different depending on the age of the tree, the specimen and the location of the sample in the trunk. The differences between current and old wood samples require careful interpretation." "The valuable samples were analyzed at the University of Oulu, as one of our long-standing research topics has been the analysis of wood materials. The best way forward would be to take NMR equipment on-site to historic finds, which are often too fragile to move," says Mankinen. The new findings will also contribute to the development of mobile NMR instruments. NMR instruments are getting smaller and cheaper—with applications in many fields When he came to his studies, Mankinen was surprised by the diversity of physics and NMR studies. "The methods are used for really interesting studies, and I didn't know before that I would be involved in archaeological research." The next studies are already underway, now on even older wooden artifacts from Neolithic inhabitants up to 7,500 years old in Italy's Lake Bracciano. In recent years, NMR techniques have become faster and more sensitive, and the trend is also towards smaller and smaller instruments. Mobile NMR instruments are also less expensive. There are high expectations and promising results for practical applications of NMR spectroscopy in several fields, such as environmental and atmospheric monitoring, battery materials, eco concrete, mine water and catalysts, and biochemistry, as shown in a doctoral thesis at the University of Oulu on December 2024. Assad's final hours in Syria: Deception, despair and flight
A few months ago, this writer told you how the UNRWA -- a corrupt, feckless arm of the even more corrupt and feckless United Nations -- was caught stealing and selling humanitarian aid meant for Gaza . They called Hamas a 'political movement' (it's designated a terror group by several nations) and somehow got nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize (as if that award could get any less meaningless). The UNRWA was up to its elbows in the October 7, 2023 terror attack. So much so even the Biden administration couldn't ignore its involvement and cut off funding . Now Senator Peter Welch, Democrat from Vermont, wants to give the UNRWA funding again: Today, I'm introduced legislation today with my colleagues to restore funding to UNRWA. Given the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza, we must give the most effective aid organization in the region the resources they need to save civilian lives. pic.twitter.com/Zx0GQ13Bs7 Absolutely not. You are literally f**king defending and funding terrorists Yes they are. Nope. You’re supporting terrorists, dummy. He's not too bright. The pronouns in the bio were a clue, we guess. You support the murder of Jews https://t.co/UC6JVQoygi Not only the murder of Jews, but the stealing of aid meant for Gaza. UNRWA is a subsidiary of Hamas, a designated terrorist organization. Under 18 U.S. Code § 2339B, it's a felony to provide resources to such an organization. https://t.co/dgxjLRMz6G We hope the next AG will charge him with a crime if they fund this. What do you mean by "Most effective", Senator? https://t.co/bEEFE3R6Xx Most effective way to give money to terrorists. UNWRA is a paper-thin veneer over full support for terrorists and terrorism. You're either blitheringly stupid for believing it or wholly complicit in supporting their goals of killing Jews. Which are you? You tell us, Senator. Hell no Cut all finding. https://t.co/hHcgCosLBl If this writer ever ran for POTUS, she would include defunding the UN and expelling it from the property in lower Manhattan. Flight Simulator 2024's first hotfix targets multiple crashing issues, missing cursorThere are only two weeks left in the 2024 regular season, and with just 14 teams making the playoffs, the rest of the league is already turning its attention to the offseason. Coaching decisions and roster turnover awaits, but the most highly anticipated event of the offseason is the NFL Draft. The Giants entered Week 17 with a 2-13 record and in sole possession of the first pick. Five teams behind them were all tied at 3-12, meaning that a late-season win could, ironically, tank New York's draft pick. The Giants clearly didn't have the draft on their minds in Week 17. New York played its best game of the season and knocked the Colt out of playoff contention. The Giants got off their 10-game losing streak to move to 3-13. For now, New York falls from No. 1 to No. 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft order. The Patriots , Jaguars , Titans , Browns , and Raiders all had eyes on the Giants game. Unfortunately for Jacksonville and Tennessee, they played each other. The Jaguars ended up winning 20-13 — good news for the Titans, as they now improve their draft standing while the Jags fall a few spots. New England lost earlier in the weekend, but it has the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker over New York. The Patriots move into the No. 1 spot, with the Titans at No. 2 and the Giants at No. 3. The top five currently is rounded out with the Browns at No. 4 and the Jaguars at No. 5. Las Vegas' head coach Antonio Pierce was adamant last week the Raiders weren't thinking about draft positioning. They proved this with a win over the Saints in Week 17. Las Vegas was looking at a top six draft pick but will now fall outside of the top 10. Cleveland has yet to play, but the Dolphins are without Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle in the afternoon slot. The Browns need a loss for a better draft pick, while Miami has to win to stay in the playoff hunt. If Cleveland loses to Miami, it will be at No. 3 and New York will drop to No. 4 due to a worse strength of schedule. Hunter has yet to decide what position he will play at the next level, but the Heisman winner is likely to find success whether he plays offense or defense. The top of the draft is expected to be where Sanders and Ward end up being drafted, but with a week of games to go, there is still plenty of draft pick movement that can happen. Graham and Johnson were staples of the Wolverines defense, despite a down year as a program. McMillan finished the season with 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns on 84 receptions. He is going to be a player to watch at the NFL Combine as he shows off his speed while being 6-5. Carter is the latest Nittany Lion to don the No. 11 jersey on defense . It is a rite of passage with the program, and he looks to follow in the footsteps of Micah Parsons. Jeanty should be the first running back taken and showed this season that he is worthy of a first-round pick.
