The moment has caused history buffs around the world to wince – the printing press wouldn’t be invented for another 1,200 years. But the film also depicts a much more authentic form of mass communication in the ancient city: writing on walls. This includes not only the formal and well-planned inscriptions shown on buildings and triumphal arches, but the informal scratchings, painted notices and charcoal messages scribbled on the walls of the city. The hero of the first Gladiator film, Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in 2000), has his name crudely carved onto his makeshift secret tomb in the Colosseum. In Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979), Romanes eunt domus daubed on a wall in Jerusalem, is famously parsed by John Cleese’s Roman soldier as “People called Romanes, they go, the house” and corrected to Romani ite domum or “Romans go home”. This fictional scene may be the most famous example of political graffiti from the Roman world, but there are plenty of real-life instances from ancient literature. They indicate that graffiti was an established way for the people of Rome to communicate their displeasure about the actions of their leaders, writing on walls, columns and on placards hung around the necks of statues. Brutus , for instance, was encouraged to join the conspiracy against Julius Caesar by graffiti written in Rome under the cover of darkness. In the latter years of Emperor Nero’s reign and at a time of high food prices when people must have found Nero’s theatrical excess particularly galling, mocking graffiti appeared around the city. Emperor Domitian apparently erected so many triumphal arches in the city that someone wrote “It is enough” in Greek on one of them. People in Rome had every reason to feel aggrieved by the actions of Caracalla and Geta, both in the film and historically. The film versions of the emperors are portrayed as out-of-touch with reality, living a life of luxury and focusing only on the arena. Caracalla even makes his monkey a consul, an echo of Roman historian Suetonius’ famous claim that Emperor Caligula was planning to bestow the same honour on his horse. The historian Cassius Dio paints a picture of the brothers abusing women and boys, embezzling money and hanging out with gladiators and charioteers in Rome. Later, Caracalla was ruthless in removing any potential threats to his power, including Geta and 20,000 of his followers as well as his own wife, Fulvia Plautilla. The obscene graffiti directed against Caracalla and Geta in Gladiator II then is part of a long tradition of political resistance in Rome. The anonymous author undercuts the tyranny and pomp of the emperors by rendering them sexually passive – an insult to their masculinity in a Roman context – and slightly ridiculous. Unlike the senator sitting outside the cafe with his newspaper, the daubing of “ irrumabo imperatores ” on a wall of Rome by cover of darkness is perfectly believable. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company’s collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika closed the case the week before Hunter Biden was to be sentenced. He could have faced up to 25 years in prison, though as a first-time offender he likely would have gotten far less time or avoided prison entirely. Prosecutors opposed dismissing the case, arguing in court documents that a pardon shouldn't wipe away the case “as if it never occurred." Hunter Biden was convicted on three felonies after he lied on a federal form to purchase a gun in Delaware by saying he wasn’t a drug user in 2018, a period when he has acknowledged being addicted. The judge's order ends the case but does not toss out the conviction. The Justice Department special counsel is also opposed to dismissing a case filed in California after Hunter Biden failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes . U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi in Los Angeles indicted he would dismiss the case once the pardon is formally received. To me, that sounds like how a social media platform should operate in the first place, but, hey, it's "new." It seemed obvious impetus for the change is the recent meteoric success of Bluesky : While Threads still has roughly ten times the user base, it's Bluesky that is experiencing a moment in the online culture, and Meta has clearly taken note. While the competition seems to have pushed Threads in the right direction by showing people more of what they presumably want to see (posts from people they've actually chosen to follow), there remained room for improvement. It's great that the For you feed will feel a bit more relevant, but if you want to exclusively stay on the "Following" feed to only see content from accounts you follow, well, too bad: For you is the default, which means each time you start a new Threads session, the app switches back to that feed. If you want to see Following only, you have to manually tap over to it, each and every time. At least for now. It seems Threads isn't done making big changes this week. On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg posted on the social media platform to announce that Threads is testing the option to make any feed the default. That means you could swap from For you to Following to serve as the default every time you open the app, or choose a different custom feed altogether. This is what passes for radical innovation in social media in 2024: giving you the option to shape your Threads experience so you see what you choose to see, rather than letting yourself be consumed by never-ending algorithmic content. Of course, that it is in "testing" means the feature isn't widely available yet, and Zuckerberg offered no timeline on when it might roll out to more users. However, The Verge has some instructions on how to choose a default feed, should you find yourself a part of the test group. How to set a default feed on Threads To start, open Threads, scroll down to reveal your feeds, then long-press on any feed. Choose Edit feeds on the pop-up: If the feature is live on your end, you'll be able to reorder your feeds via the three lines button.
