The former Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, on Friday commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for stopping the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from turning the state into his private estate. Odili, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi, spoke at an event he organized for Fubara and his family in Port Harcourt. Fubara and Wike, his predecessor, fell out last year over an alleged bid for control of the state’s resources. The bad blood between the former allies has split Rivers into two camps with personalities in the state, including members of the state House of Assembly and leaders of thought queuing behind the two men. READ ALSO: Wike claims he removed Secondus as PDP National Chairman for Fubara Odili in his remark at the event commended Fubara for the sterling leadership qualities he has demonstrated since he assumed office in May last year. He said: “It is now over 12 months, since the 25th October 2023, when a fierce existential fight, though unnecessary, was waged against Governor Fubara over the soul of Rivers State. “Governor Fubara confronted the challenge, prevented the quest by one man to capture the state as a private estate, emancipated Rivers people, steadied governance, and made civil servants and Rivers people happier as it used to be.” Wike in 2022 credited Odili for his success in politics. The duo had since fallen out over political differences. Opinions Balanced, fearless journalism driven by data comes at huge financial costs. Donate NowIf anyone was still wondering whether Arsenal are truly back to their best, this win at West Ham will surely banish any lingering doubts. For the second time in a week, the Gunners put five goals past their opponents and this time they did it all in the first half. It made for a scintillating opening 45 minutes, which also saw West Ham score twice. Not since 2012 has a Premier League match had seven first-half goals, with only three previous examples in total. The second half was the opposite of the first. Not a single goal was scored and instead this game meandered to a quiet finish. Not that Mikel Arteta will have minded, with Arsenal hosting Manchester United on Wednesday night. This trip to West Ham was all about Arsenal securing the win that closed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to six points. The Gunners can now sit back and watch Sunday’s showdown between the Reds and Manchester City in comfort. The Arsenal fans took great glee in chanting it to their West Ham counterparts at half-time: “Who put the ball in the West Ham net? Half the f*****g team did.” Colourful language, but the point stands. During their first-half blitz, Arsenal had five different scorers. It was the same in Lisbon on Tuesday night, when Arteta’s side dispatched Sporting CP 5-1. After months of looking turgid and flat in attack, the Gunners have found their spark again and everyone is contributing. The common factor is Martin Odegaard, and since his return to the team Arsenal have scored 14 goals in four games. The Norwegian was majestic against West Ham, running the show and helping to create Leandro Trossard’s goal with a great dinked pass to Bukayo Saka. Arsenal’s corner routines almost feel like NFL plays at times and, if that’s the case, then Gabriel is the quarterback. Before Saka swung the ball in for the defender to head home Arsenal’s opener, Gabriel called him over for a quick huddle. Saka was, presumably, left in no doubt where Gabriel wanted it and, after a run to the near post, he flicked the ball past Lukasz Fabianski. It was another well-worked routine by Arsenal, which had set-piece coach Nicolas Jover jumping for joy on the touchline. Jurrien Timber blocked Lucas Paqueta at the near post and, after Gabriel had lost Michail Antonio, the space was there for him take full advantage. The Brazilian reacted by replicating the celebration he performed after scoring against Sporting on Tuesday. There are some suggestions that Gabriel is pretending to be Batman, in response to Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres imitating Bane. Either way, the Arsenal defender is heroic from corners. After a poor run of form earlier this season, this week must feel like a turning point for Trossard. The Belgian had previously not scored for Arsenal since September, but found the net against West Ham to add to his goal in Lisbon on Tuesday. With Saka on the other wing, Trossard is unlikely to get many plaudits. However, it should not be forgotten what a valuable asset he can be. During the back end of last season, the former Brighton star was arguably Arsenal’s best player in the final 10 games of the title race. His goal here, like the one at Sporting, was a tap-in, but it was followed by a great assist to set up Kai Havertz. Trossard played a lovely ball over the top for the German, who finished well to score Arsenal’s fourth of a frantic first half. With talk of a new contract for Trossard circulating, this was a timely reminder of what he can bring.

Bethel was also clear Wednesday about his agenda if elected: He will oppose the ongoing $50 million Benn Hi redevelopment project; stress private business initiatives over those of nonprofit groups, and seek to balance what he sees as “left-leaning” decisions by the current Select Board. He also would encourage Town Manager Stuart Hurd and Assistant Town Manager Dan Monks to retire from their jobs to clear the way for significant change in the town office staff – one he said should focus on being more business friendly. With at least openings on the seven-person board next March, several residents are rumored to be considering a run. The terms of Chair Jeannie Jenkins, Jeanne Conner and Tom Haley expire in 2025, and Jenkins and Conner have indicated they won’t seek another term after six years on the board. Earlier this week, residents Martha Mackey and Jack Rossiter-Munley announced they are running as a team for the board. The early activity is well in advance of the January 27 deadline for candidates to file nomination papers with at least 30 voter signatures for the March 4 election. “We have people on the board that don’t want to face reality,” Bethel said. “Reality is that people in Bennington are hurting financially. The businesses downtown are hurting financially.” The town doesn’t “have anybody in the town hall that concentrates on businesses,” he said. “If I get on the board, I want a new town staff. I would like Stu Hurd, who I admire, to retire, and also Dan Monks. We need to set people up that are going to concentrate on businesses, not nonprofits.” The Putnam Block project, Bethel said, “has taken way too long. The Benn Hi project [estimate] went from $20 million to now $50 million. I don’t think that will ever get off the ground. I think it is a stupid project. We need to concentrate on the people who live here.” He added, “I want change on the board. And I am not against these two young people running for the board [Mackey and Rossiter-Munley], but I think they are going to be too far to the left, and I am center-right politically. “I want more things done,” he said. “I’m tired of waiting around. And we don’t have anyone recruiting business.” He continued, “We’ve got to raise the grand list the right way,” referring to a nonprofit organization recently purchasing the former People’s Bank branch on Main Street, which Bethel said would likely take that property off the tax rolls. Bethel contended that “Bennington is always announcing that it’s poor,” which he said leads to initiatives like the Bennington Community Market. The market received grant funding in part to address a perceived “food desert” situation in the downtown area that alleged limited grocery or other food options – a contention Bethel rejects as untrue. “Things like that bother me and I want change,” he said, adding that “the way to do that is to elect new people on the Select Board." Bethel has run unsuccessfully for the Select Board at least three times in past elections, in 2018, 2019 and 2021. He also has been a leader in several town or school district referendum initiatives since at least the early 2000s, including three attempts – in 2018, 2019 and 2020 - to establish a mayoral form of government in Bennington, all of which were rejected in town voters. Bethel said he still sees a mayoral format a better option for the town, especially in terms of spurring economic development.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield embarrassed the woeful Giants with his arm and legs, and if that wasn't enough, he rubbed it in by mimicking New York fan favorite Tommy DeVito's celebratory dance after scoring a touchdown. Mayfield catapulted into the end zone on a spectacular 10-yard scramble for one of Tampa Bay's four rushing TDs, and the Buccaneers beat the Giants and new starting quarterback DeVito 30-7 on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak and extending New York's skid to six. With both teams struggling and coming off byes, most of the focus leading up to the game was on the Giants' decisions this week to bench and then release quarterback Daniel Jones. The brash DeVito was given the starting job and asked to spark coach Brian Daboll's team, as he did last season. Instead, Mayfield provided the energy with his play and his trolling of DeVito. “Tribute to Tommy,” said a straight-faced Mayfield, who was 24 of 30 for 294 yards. “He’s a good dude, that’s why. Most of the times, I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s spontaneous.” Mayfield was asked several times about the gesture and admitted he wanted to give Giants fans something they liked, adding he met DeVito at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in February. “He had his chain blinged out, swag walking through the casino. It was awesome,” Mayfield said. “It was like a movie scene, honestly.” DeVito did nothing to help the NFL's lowest-scoring offense. He threw for 189 yards, mostly in the second half with New York well on its way to its sixth straight loss at home, where it is winless. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers dominated in every phase in a near-perfect performance that featured TD runs of 1 yard by Sean Tucker, 6 yards by Bucky Irving and 1 yard by Rachaad White. After recent losses to the Ravens, 49ers and Chiefs, Tampa Bay (5-6) moved within one game of idle Atlanta in the NFC South. “We’re hoping it builds confidence,” Mayfield said. “We have a belief that we are still sitting and controlling our own destiny.” Tampa Bay scored on five of its on first six possessions to open a 30-0 lead, and none was more exciting than Mayfield's TD run with 12 seconds left in the first half. On a second-and-goal from the 10, he avoided pressure and went for the end zone. He was hit by Cor'Dale Flott low and Dru Phillips high around the 2-yard line, and he was airborne when he crossed the goal line. The ball came loose when he hit the turf but he jumped up and flexed, DeVito-style, as the Bucs took a 23-0 lead. DeVito said players talked about the celebration in the locker room but he did not see it. Daboll was asked about the gesture and said Mayfield played well. He said the Giants' poor performance had nothing to do with Jones being released. “No excuse on that,” said Daboll, whose job is on the line despite making the playoffs in 2022. “We just didn’t do a good enough job.” “We played soft, and they beat the (expletive) out of us,” defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence added. Mayfield's favorite target Mike Evans returned to the lineup after missing three games with a hamstring injury and had five catches for 68 yards. Irving had 87 yards rushing and six catches for 64 yards. The Bucs held New York to three first downs and 45 yards in the first half, and they finished with 450 yards to the Giants' 245. DeVito had a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Devin Singletary. The brash New Jersey native was sacked four times, including once in the fourth quarter, which forced him to go to the bench for one play.
