A part of Ipswich Waterfront has been labelled as 'Fargo' by residents due to ongoing anti-social behaviour. Those living in Anchor Street spoke out after reporting a "honk-a-thon" outside their window in the early hours of Sunday, November 17. Vehicles reportedly arrived from 10pm on the evening of Saturday, November 16, filling the air with music, shouting and laughter under properties in Anchor Street , noise and disruption until the early hours of the morning. Suffolk Constabulary said that they were not aware of any incidents on Sunday and that noise and traffic complaints would be matters for Suffolk County Council. The "honk-a-thon" is another incident of anti-social behaviour that has been plaguing residents around Helena Street and the Orwell Quay for the last two years according to the residents. An Anchor Street resident said: "We feel like we're Fargo, getting one stagecoach a week and being ignored where as the other end [of the Waterfront] is Las Vegas, where all the money is and the problems are always sorted." Helena Road was the scene of a honkathon where cars continuously honked at each other until the early hours of the morning (Image: Oli Picton) One issue is due to damaged bollards on Helena Street which has meant cars drive down there late at night, disturbing residents. Two residents of the area, who wished to remain nameless said: "It is so frustrating because we have been raising these issues for two years now and nothing has happened. "We have gone to the police who say to go to the county council, we go to them and they say to go to environmental health, we go to them and they say to go to highways. The bollards on Helena Road, near A Listers at Aurora have been bent back and broken, allowing cars to speed down the road near the Waterfront (Image: Oli Picton) "We are just going in circles and it is so frustrating as it seems like such a easy problem to solve." "We have lost faith in some in the local authorities a little bit." Ipswich Waterfront has three entrances accessible by cars, of which the other two have retractable bollards that fill the whole width of the road. The bollards at the other end of Helena Road, near the University of Suffolk (Image: Oli Picton) One idea to solve the issue of noise and anti-social behaviour from the residents is to install a permanent fixture across the road, which would allow goods vehicles to come down the road from towards the University of Suffolk. The residents said: "It seems to us such a simple issue to solve and we know it will cost to put something in place. "That being said, there are over 300 residents around this area and we all pay a considerable amount of council tax, which seems to go up all the time, and in return we are seemingly getting worse services." Ward councillor Cathy Frost has raised the matter with highways to ensure work will be done to replace the bollards. She said: "We understand there has been a delay. I've also talked to the police about and they have asked for additional road signs."
Cowboys win wild one vs. Commanders to halt five-game slideBy Kanishka Singh WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Thursday his office launched investigations into over a dozen technology platforms over their privacy and safety practices for minors. Those being probed included artificial Intelligence chatbot startup Character.AI and fourteen other platforms like Reddit, Instagram and Discord, the Texas attorney general added. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT Tech platforms have come under increasing scrutiny over their impact on children. Top U.S. social media platforms made an estimated $11 billion in advertising revenue from users younger than 18 in 2022, according to a Harvard study published last year. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy last year warned that young people using social media risked suffering body image issues, disordered eating, poor sleep quality and low self-esteem, especially among adolescent girls. KEY QUOTE “Technology companies are on notice that my office is vigorously enforcing Texas’ strong data privacy laws,” Paxton said. CONTEXT Social media companies have said they will work with officials to protect young users, and say they have introduced new tools designed to protect teens online, including parental control features. The firms had no immediate comment on Thursday. Paxton’s statement said the probes would focus on the platforms’ compliance with two Texas laws – the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act and the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act (TDPSA). The SCOPE Act bans digital service providers from sharing, disclosing, or selling a minor’s personal identifying information without permission from the child’s parent or legal guardian. The legislation requires firms to provide parents with tools to manage and control the privacy settings on their child’s account. The TDPSA imposes notice and consent requirements on companies that collect and use minors’ personal data, Paxton’s office said. The legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s most revered political and intellectual figures, continues to shape the nation’s landscape, even decades after his passing. A nationalist, federalist, and visionary, Awolowo played a critical role in Nigeria’s political and constitutional development. His ideals, which centred around unity, democracy, and social justice, have left an indelible mark on the fabric of Nigerian society. Chief Awolowo’s commitment to education, self-reliance, and equitable development laid the groundwork for many of the nation’s institutions. His role in promoting federalism, fighting for the rights of the marginalized, and advocating for inclusive governance resonates in Nigeria’s modern-day political struggles up until today. Many Nigerians, both within and outside of politics, strive to uphold these ideals and carry forward his ideals of cultural renaissance and social justice, advocating for a stronger and more united Nigeria. But beyond the broad scope of these influential figures, one person stands at the forefront of ensuring that Chief Awolowo’s legacy remains alive, relevant, and impactful: Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, the sage’s last-born child. Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, is a steadfast champion of her father’s vision. She has become the driving force in preserving and expanding his legacy, ensuring it continues to influence the national conversation. Her work within the Foundation, alongside her other leadership roles, embodies the ideals her father fought for—integrity, education, good governance, and national development. A former Ambassador to the Netherlands and an active participant in Nigeria’s political discourse, Tokunbo has been an advocate for national development and women’s empowerment. She is carrying her father’s vision forward by playing significant roles in various strategic positions, such as her tenure as the Chairman of the Governing Council of Lagos University Teaching Hospital and as a delegate at the 2014 National Constitutional Conference. In these roles, she advocated for a political restructuring that would ensure a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria, something that mirrors her father’s lifelong efforts to ensure the prosperity and unity of the nation. Tokunbo is a key figure behind the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership. This biennial award recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence in leadership and good governance, qualities that Awolowo himself epitomized. Through this award, she continues to spotlight global leaders who reflect the values of her father, ensuring that his ideals remain integral to the nation’s political and social ethos. Her upcoming webinar, “Building a Viable Society in Challenging Times: The Critical Role of Women,” reflects her ongoing mission to empower women and raise their voices in the struggle for national development, while remaining a true Ambassador of her father’s vision. Like the Sage himself, Tokunbo has an unyielding commitment to the progress of Nigeria, its people, and its future. She is the bridge between the ideals of the past and the aspirations of the present, ensuring that the values Chief Obafemi Awolowo fought for continue to thrive in a modern world. Through the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, she upholds her father’s commitment to nation-building in ways that resonate with the challenges and opportunities of today. As the Chairman of African Newspapers of Nigeria, publishers of the iconic Nigerian Tribune titles, Tokunbo continues to provide a platform for meaningful discourse on governance, leadership, and the future of the nation. The forthcoming webinar, “Building a Viable Society in Challenging Times: The Critical Role of Women,” promises to be a remarkable convergence of influential voices committed to national progress. Hosted by the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation under the visionary leadership of Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, this event continues the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo by fostering meaningful conversations around governance, leadership, and inclusivity. Among the distinguished dignitaries set to participate are the Chairman, The Vice President of Nigeria. His Excellency Kashim Shettima; the Distinguished Guest, Governor of Lagos State. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and the Keynote Speaker, Her Excellency Dr. Amina Mohammed, whose tireless advocacy for sustainable development and women’s empowerment has earned global recognition. Join our WhatsApp Channel nowEvery summer, Australians look for ways to cool down. Millions of us head to the beach. Those inland head for rivers, waterholes and waterfalls. But cooling off comes with risks, from dangerous rips in the ocean to hidden logs in rivers. In recent years, a surprising number of people have died at waterfalls and waterholes. These natural spectacles have hidden dangers, from slippery rocks to unexpected currents, to turbulent water. While many of us know about the risks of drowning in the ocean, rivers are actually more deadly. Over the last 22 years, slightly more people have drowned in rivers and creeks than any other body of water. The drowning figures from 2022–23 show 76 people died in rivers and creeks, compared to 75 at beaches. Every drowning death leaves a trail of grief. Here’s what you can do to stay safe. How common are these deaths? Deaths at popular waterfalls in recent years include: Isabella Falls, inland from Cairns: three deaths in the last two years Millaa Millaa Falls, inland from Cairns: two deaths this year Dangar Falls in northern New South Wales: three deaths since 2012. Then there are locations such as Babinda Boulders south of Cairns. While more waterhole than waterfall, this famous location has claimed 21 lives since 1959, leading authorities to fence off dangerous channels and pools where churning water can push swimmers under and keep them there. Even so, deaths continue . Why are waterfalls dangerous? As water cascades, it often carves out a deep pool, known as a plunge pool. Visitors often swim at these pools, drawn by the natural beauty and deeper water. But these idyllic scenes come with hidden risks. For instance, where the waterfall hits the pool, it creates turbulence and currents. If large volumes of water are falling, the pressure can be enough to push people underneath. Currents can also carry people underneath a rock ledge and trap them. Adrenaline-seekers might jump off the lip of the waterfall. This is very risky, especially if you don’t know how deep the water is. Droplets and mist from the falls mean the rocky sides are inevitably slippery and often covered in algae or moss. Finally, there’s the popularity factor. The more inexperienced people who go, the higher the chance of something going wrong. Social media reels of influencers at beautiful locations encourage more people to seek out secluded waterfalls. Are these deaths getting more common? We don’t know. That’s because deaths at waterfalls are rolled into statistics for river-related deaths. By one estimate 5% of drownings in inland water sources took place at waterfalls or swimming holes over the ten years to 2021. We do know there’s been a surge in selfie deaths worldwide in recent years. Some of these deaths take place at waterfalls, usually when visitors jump the fence or make their way to the lip of the waterfall before slipping and dying. When you’re searching for the perfect selfie location, you’re not paying close attention to risks. If you do get into trouble, help is often a long way away. Rescuers can take hours to arrive, while drowning happens very quickly. While popular beaches usually have lifeguards able to spring into action, waterfalls, waterholes and rivers do not. How can we stay safe? Waterfalls are some of the world’s great natural spectacles. The most famous attract millions of visitors each year, from Niagara Falls on the Canada-United States border to Victoria Falls between Zambia and Zimbabwe to Venezuela’s Angel Falls, the tallest uninterrupted waterfall. They are created when soft rock is washed away, or where a river meets a natural drop such as a cliff. We’re drawn to these places, and that’s not going to change. So how can we visit safely? Authorities have put up signs around many popular swimming spots, including waterfalls. These can be useful to indicate danger or prohibit an activity. But most people simply ignore them, according to a Queensland government spokesperson. The most important thing is to proceed with caution. Just as you would check a new beach for signs of rip currents or dangerous waves, you should check waterfalls and waterholes for hidden dangers. Don’t assume picturesque places are safe because they’re pretty. Familiarity matters too. Many people who have died at waterfalls have been visitors, whether from interstate or overseas . If you grew up near a waterfall or waterhole, you’re more likely to have learned about the dangers. If you’ve checked the swimming hole, swimming should be reasonably safe. But it’s best to avoid going directly under the waterfall. Climbing waterfalls is very dangerous. It might look fun, but slippery rocks can send you crashing to your doom, while turbulent water and hidden rocks under the surface can be lethal. The lip of a waterfall is extremely slippery and gravity is not on your side. Alcohol and waterfalls are a bad mix. Alcohol makes some people take more risks. Swim first, drink later. Check the chance of rain before you go, and not only at the waterfall but upstream. Intense rain upstream can create flash floods surprisingly quickly, sweeping you off your feet . And if you’re in northern Australia, you need to do one more vital check – for crocodiles. Many popular waterfalls and swimming holes are seen to be safe because they are elevated or far from the sea. But crocs can pop up in unexpected places . Does this mean you should avoid waterways entirely? No. As Paul McCartney advised: Don’t go jumping waterfalls Please, keep to the lake People who jump waterfalls Sometimes can make mistakes.Greene Jr. runs for 3 TDs, Matthews adds 134 yards and a score to lead Towson over Campbell 45-23
The decisive victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the Maharashtra assembly elections is expected to speed up the redevelopment of Asia's largest slum Dharavi. The recent indictment of Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and other group officials in the US could potentially affect the group's fundraising efforts. However, the hardcore underlying asset of land associated with this project may cushion the impact. The election results ensure continuity in governance, reducing the risk of policy reversal or administrative delays that often stall large-scale projects. Opposition parties, including the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), had earlier expressed reservations about the project owing to land allotment and other issues. The project has seen the allocation of additional land in various parts of Mumbai by the government to support the massive rehabilitation and redevelopment efforts. On December 9, Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog, was abducted, tortured, and killed in Beed for opposing an extortion attempt targeting an energy firm. Multiple arrests have been made in connection with the case, but a political clash has erupted over Walmik Karad, an accused in the extortion plot who is said to be a close associate of Parli MLA Munde. Mumbai: Actor-producer Prajakta Mali on Saturday slammed BJP MLA Suresh Dhas for dragging her name in his attempt to target NCP minister Dhananjay Munde in the sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh murder case. Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog, was abducted, tortured and murdered in Beed on December 9 for attempting to thwart an extortion bid on an energy firm. While several persons have been arrested so far, a political tussle is underway over Walmik Karad, an accused in the extortion case linked to the murder and who is reportedly a close aide of Parli MLA Munde. Addressing a press conference, Mali said Dhas’ comments were in bad taste, entirely baseless and asserted women, especially actors, should not be made soft targets. Mali said her silence over video clips and fake news circulating over the past one-and-half months on social media pertaining to her visit to Parli for a cultural event should not seen as “my consent”. “Artistes choose to stay away from such mudslinging. But Suresh Dhas is an elected representative and what he says and the manner in which he says it have to be taken seriously. Dhas’ remarks are false and baseless. His remarks linking me to Dhananjay Munde are derogatory,” the actor emphasised. She said her family and friends believed in her when such negativity was being spread on social media but it needs to be taken seriously when an MLA makes such comments. Mali said she has sought a public apology from Dhas and is contemplating legal action against the Ashti MLA. “I had been to Parli for a cultural event, an award function. Artistes like me travel to several cities to entertain audiences. Why name just women? Haven’t male actors attended such programmes organised by politicians? Dhas has used my name for his selfish interests,” she said. Asserting that such comments not only malign women but also show a person’s mindset, Mali informed that she has lodged a complaint with the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission. “(Women) actors are soft targets. Don’t misuse them for your TRP (viewership). To what extent can you go to boost TRPs? Don’t you think she (the target of such attacks) can slip into depression and commit suicide?” she said questioning the media. Mali also informed that she had sent a notice to Munde’s wife Karuna over some social media comments, following which the latter stopped making such utterances. “Karuna Munde, do not speak without clarifying. Your information is wrong,” Mali said. The actor said she will meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking that social media platforms, portals and media be held accountable for maligning women. Incidentally, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule has asked Dhas to desist from publicly attacking Munde over the sarpanch murder case. “I will ask Dhas to share any information he possesses directly with the chief minister rather than going public. I will tell him not to make any comments which will hamper the (murder) probe, ” Bawankule told reporters on Friday. Click for more latest India news . Why is chief minister Devendra Fadnavis so keen on having a special law to deal with ‘urban naxals’? He piloted the Maharashtra Special Public Security Act in the inaugural winter session of the Maharashtra state assembly session this month (after an abortive attempt at the last session before the assembly elections). Citing a 2012 report in which as many as 180 grassroots organisations were listed as having links with Naxalite groups, the chief minister justified the need for a new law. He claimed that 40 of those on this list took part in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, and specifically named Bharat Jodo Abhiyan led by Yogendra Yadav. Fadnavis also claimed that these groups had held a secret meeting in Kathmandu on 15 November in order to plan unrest in Maharashtra and launch an attack on EVMs in those constituencies where the BJP was likely to win. Yogendra Yadav, convenor of the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, an umbrella organisation of Gandhian, socialist and Ambedkarite grassroots organisations, has dared Fadnavis to make the list public. The Abhiyan, he said, believes in Gandhian non-violence and had openly supported the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) in the Maharashtra assembly election. There was nothing clandestine about its activities. Since the chief minister clearly knew more than he did, perhaps Fadnavis should enlighten him, Yadav suggested. He also pointed out that the situation in Maharashtra is hardly bad enough to warrant another draconian law to deal with ‘urban naxals’. And if it was indeed so bad, what had the state government done about it in the last few years? Several observers believe that the BJP government anticipates a number of popular unrests in the state in the coming months and is gearing up to deal with people’s anger. With protests gathering momentum in Markadwadi, Nashik and other places against the alleged manipulation of votes through EVMs, the government also anticipates agitations against the Adani Group. The Dharavi ‘redevelopment’ project is another flashpoint. Multiple allegations of corruption against the previous Mahayuti government are expected to spark fresh protests over ongoing grievances: a long term energy procurement contract, a port coming up at Vadhvan, massive swathes of land—including Mumbai’s precious salt pans—being handed over to the Adani group for the Dharavi project and the bullet train project, bribery related to land acquisition and construction of the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The Maharashtra Special Public Security Act seems tailor-made to give the police a free hand. It prescribes a fine of Rs 2 lakh and a two-year prison term for being a member of an unlawful organisation, a fine of Rs 3 lakh and a prison term of three years for managing activities of an unlawful organisation, a prison term of five years and a fine of Rs 7 lakh for taking part in an unlawful activity. It also allows the state to freeze and confiscate assets—investments, securities, land and other property. Expectedly, the definition of unlawful organisations and activities has been kept vague enough to include anybody and everybody. Offences under the proposed Act will be both cognisable and nonbailable, allowing the police to make arrests without warrants and bail available only through the courts. The Bill has been sent to the Joint Select Committee and will be introduced again in the next assembly session. Also Read: Is Devendra Fadnavis planning another crackdown like Bhima-Koregaon? It was during Fadnavis’s last tenure as chief minister that the Maharashtra police initiated the infamous Bhima-Koregaon conspiracy case. Though the case is crumbling in court, it enabled the police to arrest a large number of human rights activists including Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde in addition to Father Stan Swamy (who died in prison), Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Vernon Gonsalves and Prof. Shoma Sen. Activists and civil society believe Fadnavis is setting the stage for a sequel. Murders most foul While the chief minister was piloting the draconian bill, the abduction and brutal murder of Santosh Deshmukh, a popular sarpanch in Massajog village, Beed district, threatened to singe both Fadnavis and one of his ministers, Dhananjay Munde of Ajit Pawar’s NCP. The mastermind Valmik Karad is accused of being involved in more than a dozen cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion. Karad, whose mafia-style operations are striking terror in the region, is believed to be patronised by Dhananjay Munde and other political leaders who have turned Beed into a lawless hub of extortion and crime. Some quarters are calling Beed the murder capital of Maharashtra, making the ‘Gangs of Massajog’ a real-life scenario akin to that depicted in the film Gangs of Wasseypur. The Opposition has demanded Munde resign on account of his alleged close links with Karad. Santosh Deshmukh As Maharashtra’s home minister for the last three years, Devendra Fadnavis was blamed for poor law and order and a failure to curb crime. As CM who retained the home portfolio, Fadnavis faces the twin challenges of dealing with the gangsters of Beed and growing unrest in Parbhani following the death of 35-year-old Dalit Somnath Suryavanshi in police custody. Though judicial inquiries have been announced in both cases, they are widely seen as face-saving exercises to buy time with the hope that the crises will simmer down. What has complicated things for Fadnavis is that the murdered sarpanch happened to be a BJP worker; and that demands for Dhananjay Munde’s resignation are being raised by sections of the BJP as well. MPs from Sharad Pawar’s NCP also met Union home minister Amit Shah and called for a CBI inquiry. Karad is now being described as a psychopath and a serial killer. It is difficult to imagine that neither police nor politicians had any inkling of his doings. Valmik Karad and Munde are not only close, they are also both on the board of directors for a sugar mill and other companies. While Karad is yet to be arrested, those arrested from Karad’s gang are accused of having demanded a ‘hafta’ of Rs 2 crore each from two renewable energy firms. Following Deshmukh’s murder—for reportedly confronting the extortionists— the firms have come forward to file complaints of intimidation and extortion. Meanwhile, over 28,000 gram panchayats across Maharashtra have announced a bandh on 9 January 2025 to protest against the murder. Missing portraits lead to threatening phone calls After 70 years, New Delhi will host the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in February. India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had inaugurated the first session in 1954; the 98th session will be inaugurated by present prime minister Narendra Modi. Sharad Pawar, who heads the reception committee, extended the invitation to the PM on behalf of the organisers. The event promises to make quite a splash. Hard Hindutva followers are not quite happy though. They criticised the absence of Nathuram Godse and Savarkar’s portraits on the invitation which carries portraits of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Gopalkrishna Gokhale, Lokmanya Tilak, Jyotiba Phule, Babasaheb Ambedkar, C.D. Deshmukh and Pratibha Patil. It seems a spate of phone calls to the organisers ensued—threatening that either the gates at the venue should be named after Godse and Savarkar or else they would face the consequences. As the massive tour inches toward its final three shows in Vancouver early next month, feeding Swifties’ insatiable appetite has become a nightly tradition for a handful of live stream hosts based all over the world. They act as ringleaders for tens of thousands of viewers witnessing Swift’s constantly evolving show through unofficial channels. “I never saw it being as big as it is,” said Tess Bohne, one of the personalities credited as a pioneer of the Swift live streams. “There is a big idea of community (and) being present without being there.” Broadcasting unauthorized concert live streams on social platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook isn’t an entirely new phenomenon, but it’s one that’s been amplified with Swift’s tour. As their popularity grows, the streams are sparking conversations about copyright law and the delicate balance between protecting intellectual property and allowing listeners to embrace their fandom. “We’ve gone beyond art being a one-way conversation from the artist to the audience,” said Jay Kerr-Wilson, an IP lawyer and co-leader of Fasken’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group in Ottawa. “Copyright owners, generally speaking, are being more flexible and they’re not necessarily (thinking) black-and-white.” Representatives for the singer did not respond to requests for comment. For fans, the lines are already blurred. Bohne got wrapped up in the Swift live-streaming phenomenon nearly two years ago after she attended the second night of the Eras Tour, in Glendale, Ariz., and found herself consumed by the experience for days afterward. “(Often) you go to a concert and you’re like, ‘That was great, let’s move on with my life,’” the 33-year-old explained in a video call from Salt Lake City. “But there was something different. It was like, ‘No, that wasn’t enough. I’m not done.’” Eager to relive the high she felt, Bohne chased down the TikTok profiles of fellow Swifties streaming other stops on the tour. With little technical experience, she began rebroadcasting their videos, with credit, on her own TikTok profile. She would place an iPad playing their feed in front of her phone’s camera, and then swap it out with her other iPad when she found a user with a better angle of the concert. The crude setup initially drew a few thousand viewers, she said, and with more effort put into the productionher audience has grown to 100,000 to 200,000 during peak moments. Since her initial broadcast, Bohne estimates she’s streamed more than 110 of Swift’s concerts in a split-screen format, streaming the concert in one corner and munching on snacks in the other while discussing all things Swift with a chat room of strangers. Some fans donate cash, and her social media status has helped attract influencer partnerships. But the stay-at-home mom of three children said this is primarily a labour of love. Bohne is credited by many of her contemporaries as the one who inspired them to take a shot at hosting their own Eras Tour with live commentary. “A lot of people say it’s like religion for them,” explained Lucas Chalub, a Twitch streamer and longtime Swiftie. Chalub first experimented with hosting streams in August 2023. Rumours swirled that the singer might announce the release date for one of her re-recorded albums on stage in Los Angeles, so many Swifties sought out live feeds, which included his impromptu setup that night. “A lot of people joined,” remembered the 27-year-old sports journalist from Argentina. “That’s the first night that I said, ‘Why not do this every night?’” Chalub said he usually draws on streams from 10 to 15 concertgoers who are often aware their recordings might get picked up by the streaming hosts. Many bring power banks to recharge their devices and sometimes a backup phone. “We are not the heroes that people think we are,” Chalub added of his fellow streamers, crediting fans on the ground who do their work pro bono. “The real heroes are the people in the venue spending — or wasting — their time trying to live stream for us instead of enjoying the show.” The legality around live streaming Swift’s concerts is murky. In the simplest terms, the rebroadcasting of copyrighted music without a licence isn’t allowed, and platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have sometimes shut down live feeds mid-stream at the behest of record labels. It happened to Ammir Shar, a 25-year-old streamer from Blackpool, U.K., who saw his YouTube feed for the fourth Toronto concert yanked down while the show was in progress. Hosts say they worry about racking up too many takedown notices, which can risk permanently shutting down their channels. Usually after a live stream ends, they delete the footage from platforms like YouTube. However, they say attempts to silence them won’t amount to much. When one streamer falls, sometimes two others turn up. Copyright owners are still grappling with that perspective, especially when unsanctioned live streams can impact other financial stakes, said Kerr-Wilson. In Swift’s case, she sold the streaming rights to her “The Eras Tour” film to Disney Plus for US$75 million. Arguably, the lawyer suggested, a company might take issue with similar options on the market, such as a live stream. But even that seems to be an evolving conversation. “People have realized that social media and user-generated content isn’t the enemy, and, in fact, can be a powerful way to engage with fans and to be part of the conversation,” he said. “I think the trend is going to continue.” While Swift hasn’t publicly said much about the streams, several streamers believe she is aware of them. They also argue the vast majority of people tuning into their feeds already have an investment in Swift’s success. Last November, a group of technologically savvy Swifties launched Swift Alert, a phone app that sends out alerts for the highlights of each Eras Tour show. Inside the app, the creators also launched a game called Mastermind — named after a Swift song, of course — where fans can win prizes by guessing which of Swift’s rotating selection of outfits she’ll wear for each “era” of her performance. Using Swift Alert in tandem with the live streams, many fans tune in for the standout moments of the three-hour concert. “A lot of people compare it to fantasy football,” Shah said. “This kind of stuff brings us closer together.” With the Eras Tour set to end in Vancouver on Dec. 8, many live streamers say they’re uncertain how the future looks. Recently, Bohne experimented with a live stream from pop singer Meghan Trainor’s concert to see if there’s similar interest. While it was enjoyable, she said the experience wasn’t quite the same. Others have started streaming Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour. They say her shows are closest to Swift’s because Carpenter is a natural at witty banter, performs nightly surprise songs and changes up her outfits. “I’ve considered doing a few other (musicians, but they) are more like normal concerts — the artist on the stage with a microphone in one outfit, just singing their songs,” said Shah. “It’s not something that people at home will be like, ‘What outfit is she going to wear?’” Some wonder how live streaming will look without the intrigue of Swift’s tour. Added Bohne: “No concert is like The Eras Tour.”
WASHINGTON — With Donald Trump’s Electoral College victory and narrow edge in the national popular vote, Republicans believe the president-elect has completely reformed the party coalitions. Trump swept the swing states this year and cut his margins significantly in Democratic states. But how much has the state-by-state partisan landscape really changed? According to Inside Elections’ Baseline metric, the latest shifts in partisanship have largely benefited Republicans, but Democratic gains in Georgia and Arizona over the past decade have pulled those states into swing-state status and pushed onetime toss-up territory such as Colorado and Virginia into the Democratic column. The Baseline metric is a more comprehensive way to measure the partisanship of each state and district. Beyond comparing the most recent presidential result with the previous one, Baseline takes into account all statewide elections over the four most recent election cycles to measure how a typical Republican and Democratic candidate would perform. This limits the impact of outlier races or cycles and acknowledges that electoral trends are often gradual. Vote-counting is still ongoing in a number of states but that is unlikely to change the Baseline calculation a great deal. Here’s a look at the partisan shifts across the country after the November elections: States that shifted right The biggest Baseline change compared with two years ago was in West Virginia, where Republicans extended their advantage by 11.5 points. That’s because the 2016 elections were dropped from the calculation to make room for this year’s results, which means Democratic victories for state treasurer and governor, and close-ish races for secretary of state and agriculture secretary are no longer included. Other shifts compared with 2022 were more subtle and spanned the partisan spectrum. The battleground state of Pennsylvania moved 2.4 points to the right. Republican states that moved further right included Montana (3.8 points) and Missouri (2.1), while Democratic states that saw rightward shifts included Hawaii (4.3), New Jersey (1.9) and New York, which moved 3.8 points, fueled in part by GOP gains on Long Island. The Baseline shift from 2020 to 2024 is more dramatic in the states that moved right. Beyond West Virginia, Arkansas is 8.5 points more Republican on the Baseline margin than it was four years ago, along with Idaho (6.7) and Wyoming (3.9). While Democrats now have a Baseline advantage of 18.7 points in New York, that represents a 6.9 point shift to the right since 2020. And Florida, which was once a swing state, moved 4.7 points rightward over the previous four years to give Republicans a whopping 10.3 point Baseline advantage. Double-digit reelection victories by Sen. Marco Rubio and Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022, followed by double-digit wins by Trump and Sen. Rick Scott this year, helped drive this shift. States that shifted left Considering Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss at the top of the ticket, it’s not surprising that fewer states shifted left. Republican states such as Alaska (3.8 points), Utah (2.7) and North Dakota (1.8) are slightly more Democratic on the Baseline margin now compared with two years ago, as is blue-leaning Washington (2.7). Colorado has seen the biggest leftward shift from 2020 and one of the biggest Democratic shifts in the past decade. The Centennial State has gone from a negligible 0.1 point Baseline edge for Democrats in 2014 to a 10.6 point Democratic advantage now. Ten years ago, Republicans won four out of five statewide elections. Now, they don’t hold any statewide offices, and Harris came close to matching Joe Biden’s 2020 margin in Colorado even though she slipped significantly in other parts of the country. Virginia has also shifted from swing-state status in 2014 (i.e., no advantage for either party) to a 5 point Baseline Democratic advantage today. Even after the 2016 elections, Democrats had just a 1 point Baseline edge in Virginia, but that’s far from the case now. Georgia and Arizona have shifted to the left over the past decade as well, propelling them from the GOP column into emerging battleground states. The Republican advantage has shrunk by 8.4 points in Georgia and 7.5 points in Arizona since 2014. States that remain close While the broader battleground has shifted, the closest states remain as they were. Wisconsin was the most evenly divided state following the 2020 elections (just a 0.4 point GOP advantage), and it remains the most evenly divided following this year’s elections (a 0.9 point difference in Republicans’ favor), according to the Baseline metric. More broadly, of the eight closest states in the 2020 and 2024 elections, seven are on both lists: Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Michigan. While Colorado was in the top eight four years ago, it’s since been replaced by Georgia. While that lineup hasn’t changed much over the past four years, it’s quite different from a decade ago. After the 2014 elections, the most evenly divided states, according to the Baseline metric, were (in order of competitiveness) Virginia, Colorado, Montana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada and Wisconsin. Overall, there’s been a gradual decrease in the number of competitive states. Following the 2014 and 2016 elections, there were 21 states where neither party had more than a 10 point Baseline advantage. That club dipped to 18 states after 2018, 16 following the 2020 elections and 14 after 2022. Now there are just 13 states with less than a 10 point difference between a typical Republican and Democratic candidate.
