The semiconductor sector has had an electrifying run in recent years, but 2024 proved to be more selective. While some chipmakers soared to triple-digit gains, others struggled to stay afloat. As traders look forward to2025, a fresh question emerges: Should you chase the winners, pick the laggards, or focus on undervalued opportunities with high analyst backing? The iShares Semiconductor ETF SOXX delivered a 15.2% year-to-date gain as of Dec. 23, cooling off after a massive 65% surge in 2023. Within the group, performance varied wildly: Top Performers : Nvidia Corp. NVDA rose 180%, while Broadcom Inc. AVGO gained 109%. Biggest Laggards : Intel Corp. INTC sank 60%, Microchip Technology Inc. MCHP fell 36%, and ON Semiconductor Corp. ON dropped 20%. The key takeaway? The semiconductor market is far from homogenous, with companies diverging sharply based on their ability to capitalize on emerging trends like AI. 5 Chip Stocks Analysts Are Betting On for 2025 Rather than chasing laggards or jumping on already overheated names, traders might want to focus on undervalued semiconductor stocks that align with analysts' bullish forecasts. Los Angeles, Dec 28 (IANS): The sets of ‘Dune’ were not meant for social media after strict orders were issued by the film’s director Denis Villeneuve. The filmmaker, 57, explained why cast and crew on his projects are not encouraged to bring certain devices on set, reports ‘People’ magazine. He told the Los Angeles Times, “Cinema is an act of presence. When a painter paints, he has to be absolutely focused on the color he’s putting on the canvas. It’s the same with the dancer when he does a gesture. With a filmmaker, you have to do that with a crew, and everybody has to focus and be entirely in the present, listening to each other, being in relationship with each other”. He added, “So cellphones are banned on my set too, since day one. It’s forbidden. When you say cut, you don’t want someone going to his phone to look at his Facebook account”. Earlier in the interview, the director shared another reason he's not so fond of technology at times. He further mentioned, “I feel that human beings are ruled by algorithms right now. We behave like AI circuits. The ways we see the world are narrow-minded binaries. We’re disconnecting from each other, and society is crumbling in some ways. It’s frightening”. As per ‘People’, the director referred to being able to have constant access to others as “addictive”. He said, "It’s compulsive. It’s like a drug. I’m very tempted to disconnect myself. It would be fresh air”. The first installment of Villeneuve's Dune film adaptation of Frank Hubert's novel arrived in October 2021, with Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Oscar Isaac . The second part was released in March 2024. A-listers Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy joined for ‘Dune: Part Two’.

One of the best parts about being honest with yourself as a basketball team is that it allows for everyone to recognize an area of weakness and then take the steps to address it. The Lakers have not been a good defensive team. They have not been a good rebounding team. And one of those remedies, they agree, is to play more physically. Yet what does that actually look like? “You’re just watching guys get up into the ball. You’re watching guys fight over screens. They’re not dying on the screens. They’re actually fighting through them,” Jaxson Hayes explained after Monday’s practice. “Boxing guys out. ... You see a little guard come down, getting into the big legs. Like that’s something physical. Like the big pushing the other big up on the screen. Just little things to get into them, knock them out of the rhythm a little bit so they can’t just walk through everything.” Hayes, who has missed the Lakers’ last six games because of an ankle injury, is set to return Tuesday in time for the Lakers to continue their NBA Cup pool-play schedule at Phoenix. The Lakers are 2-0 and have games with the Suns and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday before the knockout stage, should they advance. Getting their backup center healthy and on the court won’t fix the team’s bigger, more innate challenges when it comes to playing this style. While Anthony Davis is a game-altering big, the team has to provide more resistance on the perimeter. “Our personnel isn’t, you know, I think if we’re going to be honest with ourselves, isn’t the best defensively,” Austin Reaves said. “Obviously we’ve got AD. That covers up a lot. But we have to be physical out on the perimeter and especially when boxing out. We got to be a better defensive rebounding team and transition as well.” Lakers coach JJ Redick flipped his practice plan on Monday to reinforce some of those habits, keeping coaches off the court for live periods and allowing players to compete against one another ahead of their third game with the Suns this season. The teams split home wins in a three-day period in late October. “It’s interesting when you go back and watch the two regular-season games, I thought we were really physical on the defensive end,” Redick said. “We did some stuff today to try to reignite that a little bit, and that’s ultimately what you’re going to have to do. Those guys are incredible shot-makers. They’re incredible offensive players. [Coach Mike Budenholzer] has them running good stuff. “As a defense, holistically, if you don’t dictate the terms a little bit with them and just allow them freedom, they’re just too good. So we’ve got to be physical with them. And we were the first two games.” Phoenix, who has been without Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, should be getting both players back Tuesday, placing an even greater emphasis on the Lakers finding some type of defensive force. Through Sunday’s games, the Lakers were 27th in the NBA in defensive rating, ahead of only Washington, New Orleans and Chicago. No other team with 10 wins is outside of the league’s top 10 in defensive rating. Admittedly, those numbers were worsened by the Lakers’ tremendously terrible third quarter Saturday against Denver when they were outscored 37-15. “We can try to joystick it as much as possible, but you still have to like ... I can joystick it as much as I want, but if you’re not competing and you’re not playing and just not participating in the game, there’s not a whole lot I can do,” Redick said. “And that’s an aberration to me. We’ve been punched in the mouth so much in games. We’ve been down and came back, we’ve started slow, we’ve started strong. We’ve had adversity in nearly every game. To me, that stretch of the third quarter was an aberration. That’s not who we are. And I reiterated that to the team this morning.” Tuesday, they get a chance to play with force and prove their coach right — even if it’s not truly who the Lakers are as a team.
Martinez had gone eight matches since last finding the back of the net against Venezia on November 3 but after Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring in the 54th minute, the Argentina international struck in Sardinia. The Inter captain took his tally against Cagliari to 10 goals in as many games after 71 minutes before Hakan Calhanoglu capped an excellent night for the visitors from the penalty spot a few moments later. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side were grateful for a point in the end after falling behind to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s first-half strike, only drawing level with two minutes remaining thanks to Marco Brescianini. Lautaro Valenti’s last-gasp strike condemned rock-bottom Monza to a 10th defeat in 18 matches as Parma edged a 2-1 victory, while Genoa defeated Empoli by the same scoreline.KINGSTON, Jamaica — Several schoolboys who were arrested following the circulation of a video depicting the violent sexual assault of a schoolgirl have been charged. They have been charged with several offences including rape, forcible abduction, knowing and producing child pornography and distributing child pornography. According to investigations, the group of male students allegedly lured the 13-year-old schoolgirl to a house where she was sexually assaulted and the act was recorded. The video has since made its rounds on social media leading to the police warning residents against sharing the video. In a statement on Monday, Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) says it is providing psychological intervention for the 13-year-old victim who was observed on video being physically abused while being sexually assaulted by a group of male teens. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Laurette Adams-Thomas said, “We were made aware of the video early Saturday morning on November 23, 2024. Our investigating team located the victim and her family and met with them on Sunday, November 24, 2024 where brief counselling was provided. The child was referred to the Victims Services Division for additional support. She is also to receive a medical assessment today, Monday, January 25, 2024 and we will continue to work with the family through our Children and Family Support Unit (CFSU).” She continued, “We strongly condemn this despicable act that was meted out to this girl. The levels of violence we continue to see being displayed by our children are of grave concern. Sadly, this also seems to be a reflection of the violence and disrespect towards women and girls that permeate our society. We need to do more now to protect our children and future. These kinds of maladaptive behaviours in our schools and communities must not be condoned and we must teach our boys that masculinity is not synonymous with abuse.” The child protection agency CEO further sought to remind and encourage individuals to report any and all forms of child abuse using the 24-hour child abuse reporting hotline 211. She added that child abuse reports may be made through WhatsApp/text at 876-878-2882, e-mail report@childprotection.gov.jm or by visiting any CPFSA parish office, or through our social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) @cpfsajm. Srinagar, Nov 24: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari today said that with time people will realise that they were misled by unachievable commitments. According to a press release, he was addressing a party workers’ convention in north Kashmir’s Uri constituency. Bukhari said that false and misleading propaganda against Apni Party led to its defeat in the assembly elections. However, he asserted that “those who misled the people and secured votes through unattainable promises and emotional sloganeering will soon be exposed, as they will fail to deliver on their poll commitments.” “Over time, people will realise that those who secured votes by making grand promises will be unable to fulfill them, both on political and economic fronts, simply because their commitments were neither realistic nor achievable,” Apni Party President said. He urged the leaders and workers from the constituency to continue their sincere efforts to serve the people. Bukhari said, “Our commitment is to uphold the politics of honesty and integrity for the greater good of the people, and we are in politics to serve the people. Time will prove that the Apni Party’s agenda, which was outlined on its inception day —March 8, 2020, is deeply rooted in a realistic approach. There is no doubt that August 5, 2019, was a black day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. On this day, our dignity, special status, and rights were taken away. It deeply pained our hearts, and it continues to hurt us.” Bukhari added that, however, the politics of truthfulness and realism “teaches us to move forward with dreams of a better future.” “We cannot afford to keep the future of our youth and coming generations hanging in uncertainty or continue wailing on the events of August 5. Reality might be bitter and not politically beneficial, but Apni Party is committed to always speaking the truth,” he said. Apni Party President stated that unlike its political opponents, his party does not believe in selling false dreams for our personal or political gains. “We focus solely on achievable goals. After August 5, 2019, we ensured that the people of J&K retain their special rights to land and jobs here. If no one has been able to purchase land or secure a job here in the past five years, it is solely because of our efforts. That was our contribution. And we will continue to strive to protect the rights of the people,” he said. Reaffirming his demands and aspirations, he said, “The detainees must be released and given a chance to live a normal life with their families. We want our youth to prosper and have a brighter future. This is the time when each one of us must strive for a better and brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir and its people. Apni Party will remain committed to this cause.” Regarding the government, Bukhari said that since this government has recently taken over, he does not identify its faults and failures. However, as time passes, “we will raise our voice against the failures of this government and continue highlighting the pressing public issues and grievances.” He stressed that “the government and ruling party should not indulge in revenge politics and should not make those who disagree with their ideology or policies suffer.” Bukharisaid, “It is true that the NC has regained power after about 15 years, but that does not mean it will resort to taking revenge on its political opponents.” The event was aimed to deliberate on certain party matters, review the current political scenario, and address important public issues and grievances.
Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers?(Reuters) -Tech and growth stocks dragged Wall Street's main indexes lower on Friday, at the end of an upbeat holiday-shortened week that was driven by expectations around a traditionally strong period for markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.82%, the S&P 500 was down 1.24% and the Nasdaq Composite briefly fell more than 2% and was down 1.80%. Ten of the 11 major S&P sectors, including information technology and consumer discretionary fell the most, down about 2% and 1.9%, after powering most of the broader market's gains in 2024. COMMENTS: STEVE SOSNICK, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, INTERACTIVE BROKERS, GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT "I’ve heard anecdotes that pension funds are rebalancing ahead of year-end, selling stocks and buying bonds. Unfortunately, I can’t verify that, but it would explain the sudden sell-off on no news. And of course, if large funds are selling stocks en masse, the megacap tech stocks would bear the brunt because of their heavy weighting in major indices." "If nothing else, today is a reminder that just because a 'Santa Claus' rally is a statistical likelihood, it is far from guaranteed." “We’ve seen an attempt at a buy-the-dips rally smacked back, which seems to confirm that this is some selling or rebalancing underway by a big investor.” JAY WOODS, CHIEF GLOBAL STRATEGIST, FREEDOM CAPITAL MARKETS, NEW YORK "What people are doing is they're raising some cash. They're taking some profits right now as we go into the end of the year and getting ready for an opportunity if it presents itself in the beginning of next year. Tech, which has had a tremendous run, is starting to pull back. I think this is the beginning of a healthy correction that will get focused over the next four to eight weeks as we switch administrations." ROBERT PAVLIK, SENIOR PORTFOLIO MANAGER, DAKOTA WEALTH, FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT “Any kind of selling pressure sort of spirals a little bit out of control when you have a thinly traded market. And I think the selling pressure is really just people looking for direction.” “It’s not a lot of institutions. I think a lot of non-professionals are looking seeing the market’s direction and they just go with the flow. There’s concerns that maybe the first part of this year can involve some repositioning and reallocation of funds and those that are trading today and next week are probably just trying to get a little bit ahead of that.” “There’s uncertainty about the direction of interest rates and inflation, and the fact of all this is sort of coming together at one time. What is the Federal Reserve going to do in the first part of next year?” “And then there’s a new administration coming in with new policies and (there are uncertainties as to) what those policies will actually be, which policies will actually be implemented. There's a lot of talk about new and many changes, but what's really going to happen?” “And because of the big run that you've had in 2024, portfolios are not exactly positioned correctly for 2025 and I think a lot of people are expecting a lot of changes in the early part of the year.” “You're seeing some of that today and that will lead to more selling pressure because people just want to capture the gains before they go on into 2025.” PETER TUZ, PRESIDENT, CHASE INVESTMENT COUNSEL, CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA “This is end of year stuff going on people have had a pretty good year, and it’s typical year-end selling pressure caused by people taking profits, not a lot of buyers out there and not a lot of volume.“ “(There’s) no reason to jump in and buy these things at these valuations, and tax planning is on peoples’ minds this week and will be on Monday and Tuesday. I don't attribute it to, you know, any changing outlook in anything right now.” “The Santa Claus rally is one of those historic statistics that bears watching, but because of the change in administration and the potential change in policy you're probably seeing more action now than you would ordinarily. There's the potential for a lot of disruption in 2025.” BRYCE DOTY, SENIOR PORTFOLIO MANAGER, SIT FIXED INCOME ADVISORS, MINNEAPOLIS "Today the market has really been reacting to the implications of taxes coming up. Tax positioning is overwhelming the other factors. But the more the Fed looks out of touch (with economic realities), the worse it is for equities...Tax trading will continue for the rest of the year." Atalanta kept hold of top spot in Serie A on Saturday after escaping Lazio with a 1-1 draw which kept Inter Milan at bay but ended their club-record league winning streak at 11 matches. Marco Brescianini tapped home into an open goal with two minutes remaining to snatch a point from the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where a passionate crowd thought a big win was coming their way. Instead Atalanta are a point ahead of Inter, who have a game in hand, after the champions briefly drew level on points with a 3-0 win at Cagliari. Atalanta will lead the league even if Napoli beat Venezia on Sunday and draw level on 41 points with Gian Piero Gasperini’s side due to their significantly better goal difference. Should two teams finish level at the top of Serie A come the end of the season they will face off in a single match to decide the destination of the Scudetto. Atalanta showed great character to battle back from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 27th-minute opener which came in an intense opening period from Lazio. The away side were initially blitzed by Lazio, with Marco Carnesecchi making two sensational stops before Matteo Guendouzi curled a great strike off the post in the 11th minute. But as the match wore on Atalanta, who were without injured star striker Mateo Retegui, grew into the game and deservedly drew level in front of a boisterous and hostile crowd in the Italian capital. Brescianini netted his third goal of the season thanks largely to Ademola Lookman, who beat Lazio’s offside trap to meet Nicolo Zaniolo’s hooked pass and rolled across to his teammate to salvage a precious point.
