Derrick DePledge, the editor of The Astorian, plans to retire from the newspaper in January. DePledge has worked as an editor and reporter at The Astorian for the past decade, including the last five years as editor. Over his 36-year career in journalism, he spent more than a decade as a state government and politics reporter in Hawaii and a decade as a Washington, D.C., correspondent. He also served for four years as the top elected leader in Hawaii for the Pacific Media Workers Guild, a labor union that represents journalists. As editor of The Astorian, DePledge emphasized coverage of housing, homelessness, mental health and substance abuse treatment, crisis response and emergency management. The Astorian was recognized for general excellence for its work in 2020 by the Oregon Newspapers Publishers Association, the first time in more than a decade that the newspaper won the top honor in its class. "I consider it a privilege to have had the opportunity to work for The Astorian," DePledge said. "Our newspaper is in a unique position to serve as a watchdog for institutions on the North Coast. My hope is that we continue to fully embrace that responsibility long into the future."

Members of Greece’s former royal family expressed “deep emotion” Monday at a decision to reinstate their Greek citizenship, ending a decades-old dispute with the country’s government. Greece abolished the monarchy in a 1974 referendum and the former royal family was stripped of its citizenship two decades later during a dispute over the former royal estate that passed to state control. In a decision published in the government gazette, dated Friday, citizenship was granted to 10 members of the former royal family. The law of 1994 deprived us of our citizenship, rendering us stateless with all that this entails in terms of individual rights and great emotional distress,” the former royal family said in a statement in Greek and English. “Our father and our family fully respected the result of the 1974 referendum,” the statement said. The passing of our father marked the end of an era.” Constantine died last year at 82 having only returned to Greece in his seventies. He remained a controversial figure over claims that he failed to distance himself from heated political rivalries while he reigned as king between 1964 and 1973. He was ousted during a military dictatorship that collapsed the following year. BUFFALO, N.Y. — Right now, there's a study underway to see just how big of an impact two Facebook groups had on connecting people during the 2022 blizzard . This is a three-year study being done by the University at Buffalo, funded by the National Science Foundation. It started in September and has three main goals. The first is to look into the role two Facebook groups had in connecting communities during the 2022 blizzard. Researchers are specifically looking at the Buffalo STORM and Buffalo Blizzard Response Facebook groups. The second aspect is looking at human mobility changes during the storm. The third is to research 311 calls made to get help during the blizzard for everything from snow plowing to removing trees. Since they just started, researchers are in the middle of doing an online survey of people who used those Facebook groups as a resource during the storm. The University at Buffalo researchers are partnering with the City of Buffalo and will share the results with city leaders. "One potential situation we hope is that this project can help us identify those communities that seem to be less connected so far, and maybe our emergency services and also our fire department could further reach out to those communities in the future and help them better cope with disasters," said Yingjie Hu, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at U.B. So far, researchers have connected with the Buffalo STORM group , and if you're in that group, you should see a link to the survey. "This is important because under a disaster context, we don't want anybody to be left out. We want everybody to stay informed and stay connected. So by understanding a bit more about the communities that are currently being connected by our technologies, we can enhance our understanding and also potential future practices to further reach out to more communities to ensure that everybody is connected and we can better cope with future winter storm disasters," said Hu. The researchers are still trying to connect with administrators for the Buffalo Blizzard Response group. They need five-hundred responses and have around 120 right now. The survey takes ten to fifteen minutes and you get a $20 online gift card for completing it. They hope to present their research by the end of next year.

The European Union, United States, and other wealthy countries have signaled support for this initiative aimed at resolving a deadlock during the summit. The proposal, differentiated from previous draft negotiating texts, suggests setting a target of at least $300 billion per year for developing country Parties to tackle climate change. However, for this to take effect, consensus among nations is required, underscoring the complexity of reaching an agreement at COP29 in Baku. The financial responsibility of industrialized countries, whose historical fossil fuel use has largely contributed to greenhouse gas emissions, is central to the discussions. The summit revealed divisions between rich governments with stringent domestic budgets and developing nations grappling with escalating climate-related disasters, highlighting the ongoing political and economic struggles.
