Victor Wembanyama went to a park in New York City and played 1-on-1 with fans on Saturday. He even lost a couple of games. Not in basketball, though. Wemby was playing chess. Before the San Antonio Spurs left New York for a flight to Minnesota, Wembanyama put out the call on social media: “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there,” Wembanyama wrote. It was 9:36 a.m. People began showing up almost immediately. RELATED STORY | NCAA head warns of the dark side of college sports gambling Washington Square Park is a known spot for chess in New York — Bobby Fischer among others have famously played there, and it's been a spot used for multiple movie scenes featuring the game. Wembanyama was there for an hour in the rain, from about 10-11 a.m. He played four games, winning two and losing two before departing to catch the Spurs' flight. Wembanyama had been trying to get somewhere to play chess for the bulk of the team's time in New York — the Spurs played the Knicks on Christmas and won at Brooklyn on Friday night. The schedule never aligned, until Saturday morning. And even with bad weather, he bundled up to make it happen. He posed for photos with a couple of dozen people who showed up, braving a morning of cold rain to play chess with one of the NBA's biggest stars. “We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner,” he wrote on social media after his chess trip was over. Richmond Battlefield kicks off Sock Drive and welcomes Santa ClausMOSCOW: Russia, the world’s top exporter of peas, announced on Saturday a fixed 5 percent export duty on peas, chickpeas and lentils from Jan. 1, effectively lowering the duty by 30 percent after exports of pulses slowed and left large volumes unsold. The flexible duty, applied previously, could go up to 7 percent depending on the rouble’s exchange rate. The measure will help maintain a balanced ratio between exports and domestic consumption of legumes, the government said in a statement. “Any actions that reduce uncertainty have a positive impact on the market. Previously, the tariff changed depending on the average dollar exchange rate, forcing traders to act too cautiously,” said Sergei Pluzhnikov, head of Russian Pulses Analytics. Pluzhnikov estimated that the measure implied a de-facto 30 percent reduction in the duty. s Russian production of pulses has boomed in the last two years, with many farmers switching to more profitable pulses from wheat, currently the country’s main agricultural export. In 2023, the country became the world’s largest exporter of peas, exporting 2.9 million tons of peas and surpassing former top exporter Canada, mostly due to booming exports to China. Russia has also begun exporting pulses to India, another major consumer. According to IKAR consultancy, pea exports to China slowed sharply to 0.7 million metric tons from July to December, the first part of the 2024/2025 exporting season, compared to 1.7 million tons during the same period of last year. Despite a record large seeded area under pulses, this year’s crop fell to 4 million tons from a record 4.7 million last year, due to bad weather. IKAR said that with slowing exports, large volumes of pulses remain unsold. Pluzhnikov said that the world’s major consumers of pulses - China, India and Turkey - have been less active this year and still hold large stocks accumulated in recent years.TWIN FALLS — Is In-N-Out Burger moving in? It sounds as if management of Outback Steakhouse would prefer the fast-food chain to back off. Could we be seeing a faceoff between burgers and Bloomin’ Onions? The City Council hears In-N-Out development manager Todd Smith out during an appeal for In-N-Out Burger’s drive-through and hours request Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, at City Hall in Twin Falls. The manager and an executive of a restaurant company that owns and operates Outbacks in the Pacific Northwest, including the Twin Falls location, say they have been providing its Australian-themed fare in Twin Falls for 23 years and don’t intend on moving from its location along Blue Lakes Boulevard North where In-N-Out officials say they plan to open its first restaurant in south-central Idaho. The situation, at the very least, sounds odd, but Brad Barker, regional vice president of Evergreen Restaurant Group, a franchisee of Outback, held firm that he is not aware of any deal between Outback Steakhouse and In-N-Out, which filed a building permit this month for the location. “We are also puzzled as to why the city would consider a building permit for In-N-Out burger when they are not the owner or the current lessee of the property,” Barker wrote to the Times-News . A notice for a zoning request is seen outside Outback Steakhouse in June 2024. The site is a proposed location for In-N-Out Burger. Barker said Outback has the lease agreement through 2028 and an option to renew for additional years after that — "so we're not going anywhere." A report from the Twin Falls County Assessors Office shows there was activity on the property in March, with the transfer of a special warranty deed to Canyon Park West LLC, tied to Wood Investments Co. in Newport Beach, California. Todd Smith, In-N-Out development manager, approached the city’s planning and zoning commission in June, where his request for a drive-thru was denied but later approved in September. The hearings came with signs posted around the Outback property notifying the public about the request. Whatever In-N-Out’s plans are, “We cannot comment on what In-N-Out Burger is or is not doing,” Barker said. Patrick Wood, owner of Wood Investments Co., wasn't available for comment on Friday. Mike Abbate, In-N-Out Burgers' vice president of store development, didn’t directly address the situation with Outback in an emailed reply Thursday, but he did mention the address on which Outback now stands. “We’re currently in the pre-development stage of our approved project located at 1965 Blue Lakes Boulevard in Twin Falls, Idaho and there’s still quite a bit of work to be done before we can begin construction,” Abbate wrote. Abbate, who didn't offer a projected opening date, said once ground is broken, it will take eight to nine months to build a restaurant and open it for business. Slocum said business has been affected because customers think Outback is closed. It’s not, and it remains open from noon to 9 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. He said customers often pepper him with questions about the restaurant’s status. Some posters on social media said they assume Outback would find a different location upon In-N-Out coming in. Thirteen weeks ago, someone posted on Outback’s local Facebook page, questioning about the restaurant’s status. The question, posted in September, went unanswered and there hasn’t been another post made by the restaurant or customers since then. Eric Goodell reports for the Times-News . The procession, which started amid resonant chants of 'Manmohan Singh Amar Rahe', saw Singh's flower-bedecked remains carried through the streets. Top Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, gathered at the headquarters to offer their respects. Family members, including Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur and one of his daughters, also laid a wreath on his body. The funeral, with state honors, was conducted at Nigambodh Ghat as the nation observes a seven-day mourning period, during which the national flag will remain at half-mast. Manmohan Singh, the visionary behind India's economic reforms, served as prime minister from 2004 to 2014 and passed away at 92 due to age-related complications. (With inputs from agencies.)
How Much is Shopify Stock Really Worth?Modders take it upon themselves to make inventive transitions to the existing ideas, giving them a new lease of life and possible direction that manufacturers themselves may not have crossed. A case in point is the new BBook AI Original Edition: a portable laptop-style gaming device featuring the internals of a PlayStation 5. The modded Sony game console in the new portable body comes attached to a 17.3-inch 4K display, and weighs close to 5kg dead weight. Almost twice as heavy as the original console, a first look at the BBook AI reminds me of the gaming laptop I owned back in 2008. It is a visually intriguing creation nonetheless, for it has made it possible to play your favorite game like Astro Bot even when you do not have the convenience of an external screen to plug your PS5 into. Designer: The brainchild of Chinese modders, the battery-less laptop-style BBook AI Original Edition is in itself a fully functional PlayStation 5 that you can use on the go, or perhaps setup traditionally with an external screen at home. Powered by an eight-core AMD CPU, and a 36 Compute Unit AMD RDNA 2 GPU, features 16GB of GDDR 6 unified memory, 825GB of PCIe 4.0 storage, and an attached 17.3-inch 3840×2160 IPS display with 100% DCI-P3 coverage and a meagre 60Hz refresh rate. All this resides within the 3D-printed body of the BBook AI Original Edition. From how it appears in the pictures, the BBook AI will have its own keyboard and a USB Type-A 10 Gbps port for connectivity. As previously mentioned, this laptop-like PS5 can connect to an external display, if needed. It comes with an HDMI 2.1 port on the side for that. If you want to do that, then there is essentially no convenience of the BBook AI. The idea of portable gameplay is compromised, and if ought to do that, you might as well invest in the original PlayStation 5. That said, convenience is also compromised by the fact that the BBook AI Original Edition does not have a built-in battery. So, when you have to play a game on it, you would have to rely on AC power to run it. If you don’t mind the idea of a PlayStation 5 in a laptop form factor, measuring 13.3mm thick, and weighing 5kg with its adaptor; you are in for a pretty loud – its sound system capable of reaching 71.3 dB – 3D printed gaming laptop you can get your hands on for $2,750.The Nigerian Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) Car of the Year Award has sparked intense competition as Kia Rio, Toyota Corolla and Changan CS55 have emerged as the leading contenders for the prestigious title. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jalen Hurts is still in the NFL's concussion protocol, forcing the Philadelphia Eagles to play against Dallas without their star quarterback. The Eagles will turn to backup Kenny Pickett on Sunday because Hurts is still dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion suffered against Washington. Hurts was injured early at Washington after his head slammed against the ground on one run and he was hit in the helmet by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of another. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said the Eagles would lean on the medical staff on a daily basis to know where Hurts — who threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores in the first meeting against Dallas in November — was in his recovery from the head injury. The 26-year-old Hurts did not practice this week, leaving Pickett — who suffered a rib injury in relief action against the Commanders — in line for his first start as an Eagle. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards against the Commanders, throwing a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and an interception. Pickett is from New Jersey and said when he was acquired from Pittsburgh that he had “great memories” of going to games at Lincoln Financial Field with his dad and grandfather since he was 5. The chance to run out of the home team tunnel — which he could get Sunday if he’s the starting QB — left him absolutely delighted. “It's a big opportunity,” Pickett said this week. “I've been working hard to stay ready. I felt like I was in a good position last game with my preparation. Now, having a week to practice, I'll feel even better going into the stadium.” Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers. The Eagles will bump third-stringer Tanner McKee to the backup spot. The Eagles also signed QB Ian Book this week to the practice squad. There has been recent precedent for quarterbacks to play a week after entering the league’s concussion protocol. Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence sustained a head injury while scrambling up the middle on the team’s final drive in Week 15 loss to Baltimore last season. Lawrence misfired on seven of his final eight passes after the hit, a stretch that raised concerns on the sideline about his health. Lawrence reported symptoms after the game. He entered the protocol but was cleared in time to start the next game at Tampa Bay. The Eagles (12-3) could decide to play it safe and rest Hurts with the team needing a win against Dallas or the New York Giants to clinch the NFC East and the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Hurts shook off a sluggish start over the first four games and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just five interceptions to turn the Eagles into Super Bowl contenders. Thanks in large part to the tush push, Hurts has 14 rushing touchdowns this season. The Eagles won the Super Bowl for the 2017 season behind backup QB Nick Foles when starter Carson Wentz went down with a late-season injury. NEW YORK — U.S. stock indexes trimmed some of their stellar gains for the year. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4% Tuesday, though it’s still near its all-time high set earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 267 points, and the Nasdaq composite lost 0.3% from its record set the day before. Nvidia, the superstar stock that’s been a big reason for Wall Street’s run to records this year, fell for its eighth loss in the last nine days. Treasury yields held relatively steady after sales at U.S. retailers strengthened by more than expected. Bitcoin set another record. WASHINGTON — Consumers stepped up their spending at retail stores last month, providing a boost to the economy in the early phases of the winter holiday shopping season. Retail sales rose 0.7% in November, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, a solid increase and higher than October’s 0.5% gain. The boost in spending underscores that the economy is still growing at a healthy pace even with higher interest rates, a trend that could cause the Federal Reserve to lower borrowing costs more slowly next year than they have previously signaled. Tuesday’s report arrives just a day before the Fed is set to announce its latest rate decision Wednesday. WASHINGTON — Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says the incoming Trump administration should proceed cautiously as it considers proposals for new natural gas export terminals. Granholm warns that “unfettered exports” of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, could raise wholesale domestic prices by more than 30% and increase planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions. Granholm’s statement Tuesday came as the Energy Department released a long-awaited study on the environmental and economic impacts of natural gas exports, which have grown exponentially in the past decade. The analysis found that U.S. LNG shipments drive up domestic prices and could lead to higher global carbon emissions. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has endorsed a ban on congressional stock trading in an interview that’s being released this week. It’s the first time he’s publicly backed the idea. He made the comments to Faiz Shakir, a political adviser for Sen. Bernie Sanders. Shakir interviewed the Democratic president for A More Perfect Union, a pro-labor advocacy and journalism organization. The Associated Press reviewed a video of the interview before its release. A bipartisan proposal to ban trading by members of Congress and their families has dozens of sponsors, but it has not received a vote. NEW YORK — In a string of visits, dinners, calls, monetary pledges and social media overtures, big tech chiefs have joined a parade of business and world leaders in trying to improve their standing with President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January. The tech list includes Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Meanwhile, the list of what the executives may be hoping for includes an open path toward developing artificial intelligence, easier access to energy for data centers and an easing of antitrust enforcement. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Amazon Web Services will invest another $10 billion to bolster its data center infrastructure in Ohio. The company and Republican Gov. Mike DeWine announced the plan Monday. The new investment will boost the amount it has committed to spending in Ohio by the end of 2029 to more than $23 billion. AWS launched its first data centers in the state in 2016. It currently operates campuses in two counties in central Ohio. The new investment will allow AWS to expand its data centers to new sites across the state, but the company says those locations have not been determined yet. WASHINGTON — Americans hoping for lower borrowing costs for homes, credit cards and cars may be disappointed after this week’s Federal Reserve meeting. The Fed’s policymakers are likely to signal fewer interest rate cuts next year than were previously expected. The officials are set to reduce their benchmark rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, by a quarter-point to about 4.3% when their meeting ends Wednesday. The problem is that while inflation has dropped far below its peak of 9.1% in mid-2022, it remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target. WASHINGTON — A new poll finds that Democrats are feeling more pessimistic about the U.S. economy after Donald Trump’s victory. Republicans, meanwhile, are still dour about the current state of the economy but hopeful that growth will be stronger next year when Trump returns to the White House as president. The latest survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research suggests that some Americans are evaluating the economy more by who holds political power than on what the underlying trends suggest. This was a persistent challenge for President Joe Biden and raises the possibility that Trump might also struggle to translate his economic ideas into political wins. BANGKOK — Japanese tycoon Masayoshi Son has joined President-elect Donald Trump in announcing plans by technology and telecoms giant SoftBank Group to invest $100 billion in projects in the United States. Trump said the investments would create 100,000 jobs over four years, twice what Son promised when he pledged $50 billion in U.S. investments in 2016. Son is known for making bold choices, sometimes paying big and sometimes not. SoftBank has investments in dozens of Silicon Valley startups, big companies like semiconductor maker Arm and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. The stock market rally and craze for AI has boosted the value of its assets, but some question if its investments will create that many jobs.
