Sir Keir Starmer said he would be looking towards a “better, brighter future for every person” in a Christmas message following a turbulent year for the UK. The Prime Minister said the season was a time to remember the importance of “being there for one another”, including in “the more difficult times”. He also expressed hope for “peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story” amid spiralling conflict across the region. The message comes after a challenging first five months in office for the Labour Government and against the backdrop of a flatlining economy and rising inflation. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, people will be travelling up and down the country. Heading home, visiting relatives and loved ones to celebrate together the hope and joy of this special season. “It’s a time to remind ourselves what’s really important. Family. Friendship. And fellowship between all people. “Being there for one another – in these celebrations, as well as the more difficult times.” To our military and veterans, the whole nation thanks you for the sacrifices you make to keep us safe. My government will serve you as you have served your country. I wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. — Keir Starmer (@Keir_Starmer) The Prime Minister sought to strike an optimistic note following another year of political upheaval for Britain, which saw Labour win a landslide victory after a surprise election called by Rishi Sunak in the summer. After taking office in July, the new Government made a series of unpopular decisions as ministers confronted the realities of creaking public services and strained national finances. As well as dealing with the economic inheritance, Sir Keir said he needed to fix a “broken society” which manifested itself in summer riots across the country after the Southport knife attack. Sir Keir said: “This Christmas, I will be hoping for peace, particularly in the Middle East as the birthplace of the Christmas story. “I’ll be looking towards a better, brighter future for every person and celebrating the joy and wonder that Christmas brings. “So, from my family to yours, I hope you have a very merry Christmas.” The message comes after revised official figures released on Monday indicated that UK gross domestic product (GDP) showed no growth between July and September. Downing Street defended the Government’s record so far when asked about the data, telling reporters: “We had to take those tough decisions to lay the foundations of growth such that we can then deliver the higher living standards over this Parliament that people want to see.” The Prime Minister also used his message to thank those spending Christmas serving others, including in the NHS and emergency services, the armed forces, churches and charities. “I know that this is not an easy time for everyone, and my thoughts are with all those who are lonely this Christmas. “Having a tough time, missing a loved one. You are not alone,” he said. Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch said Christmas was a time to reflect on “all that’s happened in the year” and “support all of those people who need our assistance”. “I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone, not just in the Conservative Party or in my constituency, but across the country,” the Tory leader said. “For all that you have been doing in your communities, supporting each other and helping to keep all our towns, villages and places going. “I think that Christmas is a time for us to reflect on all that’s happened in the year. “Sometimes we have amazing years. “Sometimes, like when I lost my dad, we have difficult years and we’re commiserating, but we do it together. “But it’s a time for us to support all of those people who need our assistance, who need our help, who need our support.” She added: “And I’m looking forward to 2025. “I wish you all the very best for the New Year and all of the exciting things to come.” Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said: “This year, I’ve had the chance to spend time with some amazing young carers. “Incredible young people who will spend this Christmas doing what they do all year round; looking after loved ones who are ill or disabled. “Carers embody the Christmas spirit of love, selflessness and generosity. “So I hope we can all take some time to think of them, and keep them in our hearts. “And wish them – and everyone – a Christmas full of peace, joy and love.”49 ‘mystery drone’ sightings in one night, but not all were legit, N.J. governor saysHappy Thanksgiving Eve, everyone. While Thanksgiving is usually a happy holiday, it can also get a bit awkward at the dinner table, when politics are brought up. This year could be especially bad, considering we're just weeks removed from the results of the 2024 presidential election, when Donald Trump topped Kamala Harris, winning 312 Electoral College votes. One USA TODAY writer is even suggesting that President Biden "cancel" Thanksgiving this year, due to the heated political climate . "In the wake of the presidential election," Huppke writes . "The last thing any of us need to be doing is walking into potentially volatile mixed-ideology settings that often feature alcohol, long-standing feelings of familial resentment and easily thrown pies." While that's obviously an overreaction, it often does get political at the Thanksgiving dinner table. But everyone in the Manning family is probably on the same side, at least that we know of. Jeff Bottari/Getty Images Peyton and Eli Manning have made it pretty clear where they stand politically over the years. The two legendary NFL quarterbacks have reportedly shown support for the Republican Party. Peyton Manning has appeared at GOP events and donated to Republican Party candidates, while Eli Manning has admitted to being friendly with Donald Trump. Peyton Manning, a two-time Super Bowl champion and one of the best players of the 21st century, has reportedly been a "longstanding" donor to the party. The legendary NFL quarterback had reportedly been a "longstanding" supporter of the Republican Party. He had reportedly donated close to $20,000 to Republican candidates, according to USA TODAY. Manning reportedly donated to past presidential candidates like Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush. The latter of which joked about Manning's support following the Super Bowl. NFL fans, meanwhile, aren't too shocked by this. After all, the Manning family grew up in the South, attending SEC schools and has made a lot of money. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess that they are probably right-leaning. "Two rich guys who grew up in the south with a rich dad. Wow it’s a big surprise," one NFL fan wrote. "I care , I'm glad they are smart enough to support the Republican candidates...USA USA...," one fan added. Instagram. Thanksgiving Weekend will be a special one for the Manning family this year, too. Texas, where Arch Manning plays, is set to take on Texas A&M in a special rivalry game on Saturday. ESPN's College GameDay will be broadcasting live from the campus of Texas A&M on Saturday morning.
Grandmother shut out of Christmas celebrationsThe UK and Germany have agreed a landmark deal that will see police crack down on smugglers storing small boats in warehouses. New laws to be brought in by the German government will see authorities seize vessels earmarked for dangerous Channel crossings. Gang members smuggling people into the UK will be prosecuted as a result of the agreement signed by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Germany's Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser. Ms Cooper said lives will be saved as a result, with new laws leading to a surge in prosecutions. It follows the arrest last month of a 44-year-old man who was allegedly supplying engines and boats to smugglers. The Turkish national is accused of shipping supplies from his homeland, storing them in Germany before transporting them to Northern France. These boats were used by smugglers to transport asylum seekers across the Channel, investigators believe. The agreement with Germany will also see intelligence and law enforcement services share expertise and stop people smugglers using social media to attract business. So far this year, more than 70 people have died attempting to cross the Channel, including children. Ms Cooper said: "We are clear that this cannot go on. Germany is already a key partner in our efforts to crack down on migrant smuggling, but there is always more we can do together. "Our new Joint Action Plan with deliver a strengthened partnership with Germany, boosting our respective border security as we work to fix the foundations, and ultimately saving lives.” Ms Faeser said: "By cramming people into inflatable boats under threats of violence and sending them across the Channel, these organisations put human lives at risk. Many of these crimes are planned in Germany. "Together, we are now countering this unscrupulous business with even more resolve." A crucial meeting of the Calais Group - which brings together leaders from Belgium, France, The Netherlands, the European Commission and its agencies, Europol and Frontex - will be held in London on Tuesday. The summit will cover the role of illicit finance and intelligence sharing to tackle irregular migration.
The Miami Hurricanes, who once appeared to be a near-lock for the College Football Playoff, are not playing for a national title. Instead, they will play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando. That bowl berth against Iowa State is a let-down for fans with dreams of a sixth national title in their minds, as well as players hoping to compete for a championship. However, Miami’s trip to Orlando and the lead-up to it are still crucial periods for the Hurricanes for multiple reasons. First, it’s a chance for the program to achieve something it has not done in more than two decades: win 11 games. Although the 11th win won’t get them closer to a championship, it is a good sign of the program’s progress over Mario Cristobal’s tenure. It would also end UM’s five-game losing streak in bowls. “We’re not satisfied,” Cristobal said. “We want to win every single game. We won 10. We were close on the other two, but close isn’t good enough. We want progress. We’re hungry and driven to get better, and so that’s what our focus is on: to improving as a football program, to getting better, to moving into the postseason with an opportunity against a great football team like this and putting our best on the field.” There are signs the Hurricanes will show up at close to full strength for the bowl game. Running back Damien Martinez announced he was going to play, and star quarterback Cam Ward said in a video call posted on social media that he intends to play, as well. “We’re trying to win our first bowl game in 20 years,” Ward said in the video, mistaking the length of UM’s long bowl losing streak. “We’re going hard.” Playing in the bowl game also provides the opportunity for the Hurricanes to get in several practices between now and the game. That means Miami can develop its young players and prepare them for next season during both the practices and the bowl game itself. “It’s extremely valuable,” Cristobal said. “You really don’t have many opportunities throughout the course of the year — time is limited more and more each season with your student-athletes. I want to state this and be very clear: it’s very important, it’s ultra-important for the University of Miami to continue to develop and grow and progress by stressing the importance of offseason opportunities ... You learn a lot about your team and learn a lot about your people and your program when you head to the postseason.” Of course, there are potential negatives. Players can get hurt; Mark Fletcher Jr. suffered a foot injury in the Pinstripe Bowl last year that cost him all of spring practice. A poor performance can also potentially set the tone for next season, like how Florida State, fresh off a playoff snub last year, suffered a devastating loss against Georgia in the Orange Bowl and went on to a dismal 2-10 season this year. “This is the ending of ’24 and the beginning of ’25,” Cristobal said. “This is the last opportunity to be on the field and carry some momentum into the offseason. So it is, in essence, it is the most important game because it’s the next game. “There’s a lot of excitement in the form of opportunity for our guys. Our guys love to play football. The chance to play one more time with this special group — this is a special group of guys now. They’ve worked hard to really change the trajectory of the University of Miami, and they want to continue to elevate the status and the culture at the University of Miami. So certainly a ton to play for.” ____What Is eSIM and Who Can Use It

Wide receiver Dallas Wilson, a five-star Class of 2025 prospect, signed with Florida. The move came just days after he asked Oregon to release him from his commitment. He signed with the Ducks on Dec. 4, the first day of the early signing period. The 247Sports composite ranks Wilson, a Florida product from Tampa Bay Tech, as the No. 4 wide receiver and No. 20 overall player in the class. Florida announced his signing with a video posted to social media Sunday night. Wilson had been committed to the Ducks since Jan. 17, 2023, taking an official visit there in June 2024 and one to Florida on Nov. 22. But The Athletic reported last week that Wilson's agent, Vernell Brown of EL1TE Sports Management Group, said Wilson changed his mind to remain closer to an ill family member, adding NIL money was not a factor. A 6-foot-3 speedster, Wilson also runs track and was part of his school's 4x400 relay team that qualified for the state competition in his junior year. --Field Level Media

The Kimberley Curling Club (KCC) hosted the 2025 Safetek Profire BC U18 Curling Championships from Dec. 19 to 23. "We were thrilled with how everything went," said KCC general manager Blair Jarvis. "We knew that most teams were travelling a long way to get here and unfortunately they had to deal with some adventures with the snow we had last Wednesday. "We wanted to make sure that we gave them an experience that they would remember, so we spent a lot of time on the ice, we wanted to give them a great social experience off the ice as well and we heard from a number of curlers that it was the most U18 event that they’ve attended and so we’re really proud of that fact." The event had 12 teams competing on the Boys' side and seven Girls teams. On the Boys side of the competition, Team Jaeger out of Kelowna beat out Team Hrynew in the finals and for the Girls, Team Arndt from Vernon beat out Team Rempel to win the gold. With these wins, Team Jaeger has earned a spot at the Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships, which will be held at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Sask. from Feb. 16-22, 2025. Teams Arndt and Rempel will both be headed to the Nationals. Team Jaeger was made up of coaches Tyler Jaeger and Travis Wielgosz, Lead Brendan Hruschak, Second Noel Wielgosz, Third Spencer Rempel and Skip Owen Jaeger. "We really worked hard this year, this year we really wanted to win," said Skip Owen Jaeger. "We put in a lot of work and it just feels really, really good to win and for all that hard work to pay off. We’re really, really excited, it’s our first National event, first U18 provincial win so we’re really excited." Team Arndt is Coach David Arndt, Lead Alicia Evans, Second Ivy Jensen, Third Bethany Evans and Skip Ava Arndt. "We’re just super excited," said Skip Ava Arndt. "It took us a couple years to get here, but the hard work payed off and we can’t believe it, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet. It’s been a lot of hard work from us and the coaches and the parents. It’s been amazing." Jarvis coached Kimberley's Team Reynolds, who went on to win bronze. "We had set a target of making the playoffs and really happy with how the boys came together," Jarvis said. "They had a couple of games with a tough start and battled back and so the resilience they showed and how they stayed positive, there were a lot of great things we can take away from that. And the bronze medal, we were just thrilled to do that. "We saw Team Jaeger on the boys side and Team Arndt on the girls side as well — if we want to get to that level next year, we have some things to work on and it’s great to see the high level of curling in this province and so I think we’ve come away very motivated as well about what we need to do to get better if we want to be a little higher on the podium next year." Jarvis extended his gratitude to the over 50 volunteers who helped out before, during and after the event, including members of the Cranbrook Curling Club. "We’ll take some of the learnings from this event and apply them to the High School Provincials at the end of February, but we’re really happy with how everything went," he said. "And this is an event for the kids, we want to make sure that they’re going to have an experience that they’ll remember, the teams that had success will obviously remember the things that happened on the ice, but for most kids it will be the experiences they had off the ice. "We had karaoke here on the one night and a bunch of teams were intermingling together and having a great time and those are the experiences that I’m going to take away from this event." Patti Caldwell was head official for the event and Jarvis said she and Ian Milligan worked tirelessly throughout the week. "Patti’s attitude is this is all for the kids and making sure that they have fun and sure it’s a competition, but it’s meant to be fun and we’re going to enjoy this," Jarvis said. "This is a sport that we can enjoy for life and so you want to make sure you’re building positive memories in every aspect." Lindsay Shannon, administrative and event manager at Curl BC, was also on hand for the event, and presented all the awards. "We would just like to thank the Kimberley Curling Club and the City of Kimberley who put on an amazing event here and welcomed all of our athletes who have performed so well," Shannon said. "We're really looking forward to cheering our winners on at the Nationals." The Kimberley Curling Club's next big event is the High School Provincials from Feb. 26 to March 1.Cop who killed great-grandmother suspended without pay

Inside the friendly confines of the Treasure Valley, hype is high and hope is higher around the Fiesta Bowl. Outside of the area, the Boise State football team is seemingly being discounted as it prepares for its College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against Penn State on New Year’s Eve. No. 3 Boise State is the team that received a first-round bye, but No. 6 Penn State — tradition-laden member of the Big Ten, a Power 4 conference — is a 10.5-point favorite , the second-largest margin between teams in the quarterfinals. It puts the Broncos, who have built quite a tradition as well, in familiar territory. They opened as 8-point underdogs in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against mighty Oklahoma; 7-point underdogs in 2010 vs. TCU; and 4-point underdogs in 2014 vs. Arizona. Boise State won all three games. First-year head coach Spencer Danielson said he doesn’t need anyone outside of the campus to believe in his team. “Please, count us out,” Danielson said Monday afternoon. It’s a phrase he’s been using in recent weeks. In addition to being a huge underdog in this game, the Broncos have the longest odds of the eight teams remaining to win the national title. “Please, count us out,” Danielson repeated. “That’s what Boise State football has been built on: people thinking we can’t do something, and we work our tails off to find a way to prove people wrong.” Despite those previous Fiesta Bowl wins, this New Year’s Eve stage probably has the brightest lights the football program at Boise State (12-1) has ever seen. But the Broncos, whose only loss all season was by three points at No. 1 Oregon, are just conducting business as usual. Danielson is giving the team Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off before hitting the ground running on Thursday. The team will travel to Arizona on Saturday afternoon ahead of Tuesday’s game. Nothing about how Boise State prepares for a game will change. Position group meetings will remain the same length, practices will follow the same formula and Danielson said he has no plans to try to “micromanage” anything. “Every game is the most important game, so your process should continue to grow and be elite week to week to week, regardless of the opponent, regardless of where the game is being played,” Danielson said. “And so, no different going into the Fiesta Bowl, quarterfinals of the playoff, I just want to make sure we do our process better than we’ve ever done.” The coach said it will be business as usual during the game as well. Danielson has earned a reputation for going for it on fourth down, for instance. The Broncos are 15-for-21 (71.4%) this season, the 10th-best conversion percentage in the nation. From the incomplete fourth-down pass in the first quarter against Georgia Southern in August to the successful 4th-and-1 rush from junior running back Ashton Jeanty in the Mountain West championship game, Danielson has leaned on a combination of analytics and gut feeling to make some big calls this season. Danielson said the balance of risk vs. reward will not change because of the game’s importance or the team on the other side of the ball. “I go into every game with a game plan for situational football. From timeouts to when to go for it, those are the moves I have to make as a head coach,” Danielson said. “And obviously, as a game goes, plans change, and I’ve got to be aware and very adaptable as we work through those.” Fiesta Bowl, Boise State vs. Penn State When: 5:30 p.m. Mountain time Tuesday, Dec. 31 Where: State Farm Stadium (63,400, natural grass) TV: ESPN Radio: KBOI 670 AM and KBOI 93.1 FM (Bob Behler, Pete Cavender) Records: Boise State 12-1; Penn State 12-2 Series: First meeting Vegas line: Penn State by 10.5 points Weather: Indoors This story was originally published December 23, 2024, 6:38 PM.
Spain Faces Threats of Terrorism and Unrest, US Warns in Travel AdvisoryCoote was sacked earlier this month after the emergence of a video in which he made derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said that a thorough investigation had concluded he was “in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable”. “Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare,” PGMOL’s statement on December 9 added. Coote had the right to appeal against the decision but PA understands the Nottinghamshire referee has decided not to. The video which triggered PGMOL’s investigation into Coote’s conduct first came to public attention on November 11. In it, Coote is asked for his views on a Liverpool match where he has just been fourth official, and describes them as “s***”. He then describes Klopp as a “c***”, and, asked why he felt that way, Coote says the German had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown” and had accused him of lying. “I have got no interest in speaking to someone who’s f****** arrogant, so I do my best not to speak to him,” Coote said. Later in the video, Coote again refers to Klopp, this time as a “German c***”. The Football Association opened its own investigation into that video, understood to be centred on that last comment and whether Coote’s reference to Klopp’s nationality constituted an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules. The investigation by PGMOL which led to Coote’s contract being terminated is also understood to have looked at another video which appeared to show Coote snorting a white powder, purportedly during Euro 2024 where he was one of the assistant VARs for the tournament. European football’s governing body UEFA also appointed an ethics investigator to look into the matter.

Mary Magdalene may have been identified among the 300 tangled figures depicted in Michelangelo’s celebrated Sistine Chapel masterpiece after a centuries-long hunt. Sara Penco, an Italian art restorer, said her research suggested that a blonde woman in The Last Judgment artwork, who is depicted kissing a wooden cross held by a figure said to be Jesus Christ, was the famous female disciple. “I am firmly convinced that this is Mary Magdalene ... the intimacy with the cross, the yellow dress and the blonde hair but also the whole context in which Michelangelo places this figure to underscore her importance,” Penco told a media conference in Rome on December 10. Art experts have long tried to identify the wide-eyed woman who appears in the far right-hand corner of the fresco on the wall behind the Vatican chapel’s altar. However, Penco, who specialises in Renaissance and baroque art, said her research should finally put an end to the mystery. She said: “The fresco was screaming that something was missing. Michelangelo was an expert painter, he was very cultured, he was someone who knew the dynamics of the church very well, he knew the gospels, and he could not have forgotten her.” Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome. Once portrayed as a repentant prostitute, she is now widely regarded as a saint by Catholic and other Christian faiths. Penco, who consulted various studies by scholars and theologians before conducting her own research, said the gospel often describes Mary Magdalene at the moment of Christ’s redemption, and she was fundamental in how salvation could be achieved. She said: “The cross-bearer is looking in the direction of Mary Magdalene, it is as if he is estranged from the composition looking towards the woman peacefully holding the wood and the cross.” Her findings will be published this week in the 240-page book Mary Magdalene in Michelangelo’s Judgement. Professor Yvonne Dohna Schlobitten, from the Gregorian University Department of History and Cultural Heritage in Rome, has endorsed the claim. She wrote in the book’s forward: “With great intuition, Sara Penco has discovered something that defines the being of art. “We can clearly see how iconography and theology are linked in Penco’s reasoning to form a vision: the woman kissing the cross has an important role, even if she appears hidden on the edges of the image.” The Last Judgment, which took Michelangelo Buonarroti four years to complete, attracts more than 5 million visitors to the Sistine Chapel every year. Painted between 1537 and 1541, it depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the Apocalypse and shows human souls and angels, many of them naked, either ascending to heaven or descending into hell. Last month, new research claimed Michelangelo may have depicted a woman suffering from breast cancer in his fresco of a biblical flood on the chapel’s ceiling.
