PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Hurts is sitting out a potential NFC East clincher against Dallas because of the lingering effects of a concussion . The Eagles are turning to backup Kenny Pickett on Sunday because Hurts remains in the concussion protocol after being injured against Washington. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni kept quiet earlier in the week on which QB will start Sunday, in large part, of course, because of Hurts' status. The issue was complicated by Pickett’s rib injury suffered in relief of Hurts in his first real game competition in nearly a year. Tanner McKee, the third-string QB, will move into a backup role against the Cowboys. Philadelphia's starting quarterback situation has surged past Saquon Barkley's chase at Eric Dickerson's season rushing record as the most intriguing talking point in the final two games. The Eagles (12-3) appear certain to win the division title — they're two games ahead of Washington (10-5) — and a No. 2 seed in the conference no matter the quarterback headed into the playoffs. Even with an unsettled QB spot, the Eagles were still 71⁄2-point home favorites to beat division rival Dallas, per BetMGM Sportsbook. Sirianni appreciated that quarterback depth has been a strength for the Eagles. “We feel good about that room,” he said. Pickett was 14 of 24 for 143 yards in relief of Hurts, throwing a touchdown pass to Brown and an interception. Pickett, a first-round pick out of Pitt in 2022, went 14-10 as a starter for the Steelers before he was traded to the Eagles in the offseason. McKee was the Eagles’ 2023 sixth-round pick out of Stanford. The 6-foot-6, 231-pound quarterback has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game. He's mostly used in practice on the scout team or in developmental periods — at best, he'll stay late after practice to get some reps in with the top receivers. “Every week, every opportunity, it's knowing it could be my shot, my chance,” McKee said. With the Cowboys out of playoff contention, the questions persist for coach Mike McCarthy about bypassing Cooper Rush for a look at Trey Lance before both QBs hit free agency. McCarthy’s answer hasn’t wavered: Rush gives Dallas the best chance to win. Rush is 4-3 since Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring tear after going 5-1 over two previous stints as an injury replacement. That’s 9-4 total. Half the losses came in both of Rush’s starts against Eagles – the last of five games filling in during the 2022 season and the first game this season. “The mindset is to win,” McCarthy said. “We’re going to Philadelphia to win the game.” Barkley leads the NFL with 1,838 yards rushing for the season through 15 games. He still needs two big outings in the final games of the season against Dallas and the New York Giants to top Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984. Barkley is 268 yards away from passing Dickerson for the season mark and 162 shy from becoming the ninth player in NFL history with 2,000 yards rushing in a season. He ran for only 66 yards in the first game this season against Dallas. Dallas ranks 28th in the NFL in rushing defense, surrendering 135.9 yards per contest. Philadelphia, behind Barkley’s stellar play, tops the league at 187.9 yards per game on the ground. The Eagles have already have set a team record for yards rushing in a season with 2,818, and they are within four rushing touchdowns of tying the club’s single-season mark of 32, set in 2022. Barkley needs four more rushing touchdowns to tie LeSean McCoy’s Eagles record, set in 2011 and just 33 yards from scrimmage to break McCoy’s mark of 2,146 set in 2013. Star Dallas edge rusher Micah Parsons needs half a sack to reach double digits in each of his first four seasons despite missing four games with a high ankle sprain, the first injury absence of his career. The 2021 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year would be the fifth player to reach 10 sacks in each of his first four seasons. The other four — Claude Humphrey, Reggie White, Derrick Thomas and Dwight Freeney - are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Middle East latest: Syrians celebrate Assad's fall as US seeks a peaceful political transitionTrump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after he takes office

Contacts AttachmentsChina has long been speculated to be developing a sixth-generation fighter jet, and with a recent report of a tailless stealth aircraft having completed a daytime test flight, speculation has been sparked anew. The new fighter that is said to surpass existing fifth-generation fighters has recently caught much attention in the social media after various pictures and videos have come into view. The potential sixth-generation aircraft, still under development in various parts of the world, including the United States and China, might change the face of aerial warfare. While the capabilities of this jet are yet to be known, it is expected to provide stealth features, speed, and maneuverability better than that of existing jets. It’s described as about 70 feet long, similar in length to the J-20. The aircraft was said to have been seen flying over a test range on its first flight, along with a J-20S, the two-seat variant of China’s Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter. This has caused some to speculate that the flight occurred at the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) factory airfield, where the J-20S is usually tested. Watch the video here: Tailless Design: Stealth And Performance Goals The Chinese government has not made any official comment on the aircraft, though reports indicate that the tailless design is in tandem with China’s aspirations in advanced stealth technology. If the tail section is absent, the jet would conceivably have a reduced radar signature across a whole range of radar bands and thus be able to evade hostile airspaces more efficiently. However, the absence of a tail may pose issues with maneuverability. As reported by The War Zone, “the stealth profile may actually compromise agility for combat situations.” Thus, stealth and agility may need to be balanced to yield a better performance for this jet. Innovative Three-Engine Configuration Another most unique feature of this airplane is its three-engine configuration-a very rare feature in designs of fighter jets. Maybe the aggressive performance requirements by the aircraft might demand power, especially for high altitude and high speed. Some analysts believe the three-engine configuration will allow for much greater endurance and better range performance, allowing for flyover of long regional ranges without tanker support-an impossibility for China compared with the United States at the moment. Potential Role In China’s Air Force: The J/H-XX ‘Regional Bomber’ Experts say that this new fighter might be a precursor to China’s J/H-XX, a regional bomber meant for high-altitude precision strikes against airbases and naval targets in the Indo-Pacific. Justin Bronk, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, described the aircraft as a “low observable high-altitude precision strike capability,” which suggests that its role is in long-range, stealthy operations. If China decides to procure this jet for operational use, it could significantly enhance the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) in both offensive and defensive operations, especially in contested regions like the South China Sea. China’s sixth-generation fighter is going to be a game-changer in the aviation world, but the full impact on global military dynamics is yet to be seen. As testing continues, the world will watch with bated breath to see if this mysterious aircraft lives up to the hype. Cellan-Jones announced in 2019 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and he has since contributed to a podcast, Movers And Shakers, discussing life with the disease. Discussing the success of the podcast, which also features Jeremy Paxman, Cellan-Jones told the PA news agency: “It’s been an absolute scream. “We’ve had the most extraordinary reaction from the Parkinson’s community. “There is a community which felt absolutely left out in the cold and this award was for services to journalism, but I can’t help but think that maybe that played some part too.” Cellan-Jones said he talked to Anne about fundraising for Parkinson’s and how technology could possibly be used to monitor the disease. The journalist added: “She showed real interest in it. “Mike Tindall, whose father’s got it, is very active in fundraising – so we talked about that.” Cellan-Jones said the OBE was “very unexpected when it came”, adding that he felt “very privileged”. He said his rescue dog from Romania, named Sophie, was “making slow progress” after becoming a social media sensation with thousands of people following her recovery online. Speaking at Buckingham Palace, Cellan-Jones said several courtiers had asked after Sophie, adding: “She’s still incredibly nervous. She’s waiting at home, she wouldn’t have liked it here – a bit too busy. “She’s making slow progress, but she’s wonderful, and she’s been very important to us.” Earlier on Wednesday, broadcaster Alan Yentob, 77, was formally made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by the King for services to the arts and media. The retired television executive, who was born in Stepney, London, joined the BBC as a trainee in 1968. He devised the flagship arts programme Imagine..., which he presented on, and was creative director of the broadcaster from 2004 until 2015. Yentob stepped down from the role in the wake of the collapse of the charity Kids Company, where he was chairman. The broadcaster said Charles had been “incredibly supportive” of him. Discussing Charles, Yentob told the PA news agency: “He’s been incredibly supportive, as I said to him, on many fronts, including the fact that I was the chairman of Kids Company, and he was incredibly supportive of that in the most difficult times. “And I think the way he’s come out about his illness, and the way the Princess of Wales has too, has been admirable.” Yentob said it would be “reckless” to not support the BBC, adding “it’s a place which embraces everyone”. The broadcaster added: “If you look at the figures, it’s still doing well, even though a very substantial part of its income has been removed.” Roxy Music lead guitarist Phil Manzanera, 73, was formally made an OBE by the Princess Royal for his services to music. His most well-known band, featuring singer Bryan Ferry, is famed for hits such as Love Is The Drug and More Than This – topping the singles charts once with a cover of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy. Discussing the honour, Manzanera told the PA news agency: “It’s very moving and humbling to be amongst all these people who do absolutely incredible things. “But, obviously, I am very happy to get it for services to music and music production, because I think music helps us all in our lives in terms of improving the fabric of our lives, and it’s a great support for so many people.” The musician said he discussed his upbringing in South America and central America with Anne, having grown up in Colombia, Venezuela and Cuba. Manzanera said Anne told him that her father, Prince Philip, “once flew a Viscount plane to Caracas airport”. He said his upbringing was central to his musicianship, adding: “It’s in my DNA, the rhythms of South America. “And the musicians that we’ve all come to know through the Buena Vista Social Club were the kind of music that I started playing guitar with. “It wasn’t Bert Weedon’s Play in a Day for me, it was the music of Cuba.” Actress Shobna Gulati, 58, was formally made an MBE for services to the cultural industries, Scottish professional golfer Stephen Gallacher, 50, was made an MBE and former Arup deputy chairwoman Dervilla Mitchell, 66, received a damehood for services to engineering.
By Anna Mehler Paperny TORONTO (Reuters) - Four Canadian ministers publicly unveiled on Tuesday a border security plan they had privately presented to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration, with an emphasis on surveillance, intelligence and technology. Canadian ministers had an "encouraging" meeting with Trump's border czar Tom Homan, Public Safety, Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters. "I went through with Mr. Homan the information that we're sharing with you today... I'm encouraged by that conversation and by conversations I've had with the incoming Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick," LeBlanc said. LeBlanc and his colleagues announced Tuesday a plan to beef up the U.S.-Canada border with helicopters, drones, surveillance towers and sniffer dogs, as well as a "joint strike force" to target transnational organized crime. The embattled minority government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it will invest C$1.3 billion ($909 million) toward border security over six years. The plan focuses on fentanyl, irregular migration and organized crime. Canada has been under pressure to beef up its border with the U.S. since Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with sweeping 25% tariffs if they did not stem the movement of migrants and drugs into the United States. U.S. authorities apprehended more than 23,000 people near the U.S.-Canada border in the 12 months ending in October, more than double the previous year but a tiny fraction of the 1.5 million people apprehended near the U.S.-Mexico border during that time. Canadian police say they have installed more cameras and sensors over the most-traversed section of the border over the past four years. Yet they acknowledge there is little they can do to stop southbound crossers. Experts told Reuters the flurry of attention to the U.S.-Canada border is as much about perception as reality. They said a more effective mode of interdiction may be to stop people from coming to Canada in the first place. As Reuters has reported, Canada is already attempting that - granting fewer visas and turning away visa-holders. Canada also plans to amend its immigration law to allow authorities to "cancel, suspend, or vary immigration documents for reasons deemed in the public interest." This might take place, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said Tuesday, "for example, in cases of mass fraud." Miller said Canada also "will be introducing measures to streamline the asylum system to deal quickly with illegitimate claims." He has hinted at fast-tracking faint-hope refugee claims. Miller also announced an end to the practice of "flagpoling," in which temporary residents leave the country just long enough to come back in and renew their status. While the focus has been on migrants crossing southbound from Canada to the U.S., Canada has been bracing for the reverse influx as people flee Trump's threat of mass deportations. "To anyone considering entering Canada illegally, as we head into the coldest months of the winter, we want to make it clear that trying to cross into Canada between our official ports of entry is dangerous," Miller said. Trudeau's government was thrown into chaos Monday when his finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland quit. Trudeau, trailing in polls, faces calls from within his own caucus to resign. ($1 = 1.4309 Canadian dollars) (Reporting by Anna Mehler Paperny; Editing by Stephen Coates)Shelia Poole | (TNS) The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ATLANTA — Holidays are a time for families and friends to gather, but for older people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, it can cause so much stress and confusion that they could be in danger of what experts calls wandering. Related Articles Health | Most US teens are abstaining from drinking, smoking and marijuana, survey says Health | Marin City housing developer files Tam Valley plan Health | Walking in a rhythmic wonderland with holiday songs that could help save lives Health | After pandemic explosion, California drug overdose deaths are falling fast Health | Grasping for hope: The heartbreaking journey through Alzheimer’s drug trials “I would say around the holiday time is the biggest challenge for people with dementia,” said Kim Franklin, senior manager of programs and services at the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Schedules are changing, people are traveling, families are coming together and friends are coming over. There’s a lot of chaos going on and that can cause a person to wander. They want to get away. It’s hard for them to process what’s happening.” The Alzheimer’s Association reports 72% of dementia patients who wander are found alive by the next day. Alerting 911 as soon as the person goes missing is critical. The odds of survival decrease as more time passes. Angel Alonso, president of Georgia Emergency Search and Recovery based in Gwinnett County, said the vast majority — between 60% and 70% — of the 30 to 40 calls the nonprofit received last year involved people with the disease. The GESAR is a volunteer-driven organization that works with law enforcement to find people who have gone missing, including children, people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and people lost during major disasters. “We get so many Alzheimer’s calls,” said Vice President John Clark, who is also volunteer instructor with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. For caregivers and loved ones, a relative who goes missing is devastating. Two of Clark’s grandparents had dementia, so he gravitated to search and rescue to help other families and caregivers keep their loved ones safe. He’s consulted with police departments across metro Atlanta on the best ways to find people with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can cause people to lose their ability to recognize people and places that are familiar. According to the Alzheimer’s Association there are often warning signs that a person might wander. Six in 10 people with dementia will wander during the course of the disease. That includes people returning from a regular walk or drive later than usual. Or they may talk about fulfilling former obligations, such as going to work or talk about going home even when they’re at home. Sometimes they become restless and pace or make repetitive movements. Clark recounted one call for help when a family reported a missing relative, but they insisted she couldn’t have gone far because of a bad knee that limited her to walking no further than the mailbox. Searchers found the missing woman 7 miles from home. Even those who have never shown an interest in wandering might start without warning. Dan Goerke is fortunate. His late wife, Diane, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012, once went missing from the car of a caregiver. The caregiver had stopped for an errand. Diane had waited alone in cars as people ran errands before. But this time, when the caregiver returned, Diane was gone but her seat belt was still fastened. “It was like she disappeared into thin air,” said Goerke, who said he doesn’t blame the caregiver. Fortunately, she was found uninjured and nearby a short time later that same day. Goerke said it’s hard for caregivers to always be on guard for wandering. “We have so many things to juggle that’s not necessarily at the top of our minds. We have to manage medications, take them to doctor’s appointments, cook meals and taking care of things day to day,” he said. Clark said when searching for someone with dementia, one of the keys is to know what the person was like before their diagnosis. Often their long-term memories are still strong. They once found a woman who walked out of her home and went to where she used to shop and to her old job, although it had closed. Recently, GESAR unveiled a new tool to search for missing people: Maverick. An 8-month-old chocolate Labrador retriever, Maverick is in training to be part of the GESAR search and research team that will track missing people, including wandering dementia patients in metro Atlanta. In cases involving children and people with dementia, a dog’s personality can also be an asset. Labs like Maverick are friendly and affectionate, not imposing or threatening like some other breeds — and less likely to scare the person who is lost. Canines can be used in searches in both rural and urban areas. “He’s an asset,” said Maverick’s handler, Carmen Alonso. “His nose can pick up odors and track where a person has been that we might not think to go that direction.” At the Cobb County Police Department, Public Information Officer Sgt. Eric Smith said if dogs are needed to search for a wanderer they call the sheriff’s department, which has bloodhounds. “They’re not apprehension dogs so there’s little or no likelihood of a bite,” he said. Technology can also help, Smith said. Searchers can use drones and families can install technology on a person’s car to help locate it or use other kinds of trackable devices including on their phone. “We get so many Alzheimer’s calls,” said Clark, who is also a volunteer instructor with the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Most cases they’ve worked on have had favorable results, according to the Georgia Emergency Search and Recovery organization. No two searches are the same, said Sgt. Jeremy Blake of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. “When responding to calls for a missing person, the response is different than that of a fleeing suspect,” he wrote in an email. “The K-9s that are used to track missing persons are not trained in the apprehension of suspects. ... Often times, if the K-9 cannot locate the missing person, they can provide officers with a more accurate direction of travel than they may previously had.” Nearly 7 million U.S. residents age 65 and older were living with Alzheimer’s according to the most recent Facts & Figures report . Of those, more than 188,000 Georgians ages 65 and older also have been diagnosed with the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association Georgia Chapter. Facts on wandering: There is a better chance of being found in urban environments because of a higher probability of a “good Samaritan” stepping in. Wanderers may give no forewarning. Often those with memory issues wander away during activities they’ve done safely in the past, such as shopping or sitting on a front porch. Some people who still drive can become disoriented and drive for miles away from home. According to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, on average, half the calls for missing persons involve the elderly or someone with disabilities. If a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia disappears: Call 911 as soon as possible. Have a photograph available for first responders and an article of clothing to provide a scent for search dogs. Sharing what the missing person liked to do in prior years can be a key: Did they have a job they went to every day? Did they like to fish or go to a certain spot? Searchers will need to know the last time the person was seen to help determine how far a person might have wandered. The New York Rangers will play the second game of their three-game road trip versus the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night, but they likely did not travel in good spirits after a tough stretch before the Christmas break. Last season's Eastern Conference runners-up were humming along following a 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 19, climbing to a 12-4-1 record. Since that victory, New York has slipped into a 4-13-0 chasm behind disheartened play and a punchless offense, dragging it out of playoff position. Over 17 games, all ending in regulation, the opposition has pounded the reeling Rangers with a 61-35 scoring differential. In the Hudson River Rivalry on Monday in New Jersey, the Rangers were smacked down 5-0 by the Devils and mocked in the process. The home side showed big-screen footage of Rangers fans jeering New Jersey's selection of No. 1 overall Jack Hughes during the 2019 draft, allowing New York to choose with the next pick fan favorite Kaapo Kakko, who was traded to the Seattle Kraken last week. The camera then cut to a chuckling Hughes on the Devils' bench. "I'm not opposed to making more changes," Rangers general manager Chris Drury said after shipping captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 7. "But big picture, the team has been through a lot the last couple of weeks. We'd like to let the dust settle a little bit." New dust could stir up, though: Eight of the next nine on the schedule held playoff spots at the break. Artemi Panarin leads New York in goals (15) and points (37), but crucial contributors are lagging. Chris Kreider (11 goals, one assist) was scratched against New Jersey, fueling trade speculation. Mika Zibanejad has six tallies and practiced with the top power-play unit Friday. Conversely, the Lightning reached the hiatus on a high note, avoiding a two-game losing streak against the in-state rival Florida Panthers with a bounce-back 4-0 road shutout Monday behind backup goaltender Jonas Johansson's 36 saves. Tampa Bay had suffered a 4-2 beatdown on home ice Sunday, watching a disastrous display on special teams as Florida netted a power-play goal and two short-handed ones on the same penalty kill. However, the Lightning rebounded nicely, getting a man-advantage goal from Mitchell Chaffee and a shorty from Brandon Hagel while holding Florida goal-less on four power plays. In stopping nine power-play shots, Johansson crafted his fourth career shutout in 68 games. Coach Jon Cooper said Johansson's play has carried over since October 2023, when he was the starter and kept the crease for six weeks while No. 1 backstop Andrei Vasilevskiy was rehabbing from back surgery. Now playing every fifth game or so like he did most of last season, he has rediscovered his routine. "He settled into his role when Vasi came back," Cooper said of Johansson, who is 4-1-1 with a .902 save percentage in seven appearances (six starts). "He has a unique gift of being able to hang in there and not play seven or 10 games and give you a good one. Those guys are hard to find." Vasilevskiy (15-10-1, 2.41 goals-against, .911) should start against New York. Nikita Kucherov reached a club-high 50 points with a goal Monday, giving the right wing 21 points in 10 of his past 11 games (four goals, 17 assists). --Field Level MediaMiddle East latest: Syrians celebrate Assad's fall as US seeks a peaceful political transition

For several OEMs, weak channel and product localisation capabilities have led to significant disparities in sales performance and inventory levels across overseas markets, a Canalys report said. According to Alvin Liu, senior analyst at Canalys, channel management and localisation capabilities are vital to Chinese carmakers as they face export restrictions while exploring local production and integrating into the local supply chain ecosystem. Chinese OEMs have achieved global leadership in electrification and SDV technologies. But the competitive edge in ADAS and digital cockpit technologies has yet to materialise fully. The report stated that Chinese OEMs should view export markets pragmatically, carefully assessing the feasibility of replicating the Chinese market’s success globally. Though Japanese and Korean carmakers are losing market share in China, their globalisation strategies remain strong and competitive and will pose a threat to Chinese OEMs. The EU-China EV tariff dispute is a significant setback to the global electrification of the automotive industry. Chinese and European automakers could benefit from sharing expertise, investing in joint research and development, and establishing a level-playing field for innovation. “But geopolitical tensions and diverging interests are hindering progress. If the dispute escalates, the EU risks weakening the development of a competitive EV ecosystem, thus losing its leading position in the global automotive and green energy markets,” said principal analyst Jason Low. The European Union’s tariffs and falling EV demand are also slowing the growth of Chinese battery electric vehicle (BEV) exports to 9 per cent (860,000 units). As a result, the share of BEV exports will fall from 22.5 per cent in 2023 to 19 per cent in 2024, the report mentioned.

TEHRAN – Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have urged the international community to safeguard Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity while condemning ongoing Israeli aggression in the war-torn country. In a phone call on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the escalating tensions in Syria following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Both ministers stressed the critical need to preserve regional peace and stability and avoid provocative actions that could disrupt cooperation and harmony among neighboring nations during this fragile period. Since Assad's government fell, Israel has conducted nearly 500 airstrikes across Syria, targeting essential civilian and military infrastructure. Israeli forces have also advanced into the buffer zone east of the occupied Golan Heights, violating the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria. Although the Israeli regime claims it is not advancing toward Damascus, its military operations have raised significant regional concerns. Israeli forces have reportedly destroyed up to 80% of Syria’s strategic military capabilities, significantly weakening the country. This military push has been condemned by the Arab League, which described Israel’s actions as illegal attempts to exploit Syria’s instability for territorial expansion. The recent resurgence of armed militants in Syria, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has further complicated the situation. The terrorist group launched a swift two-week offensive, capturing Damascus and prompting Assad’s government’s downfall. The chaos created by HTS’s advance has provided an opening for Israel to escalate its military actions and expand its occupation in Syria. Both Araghchi and Al Nahyan condemned these developments, emphasizing the need to restore stability and prevent further destabilization in the region. In a separate phone conversation, Araghchi and Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani reiterated the necessity of ending Israel’s attacks on Syria and supporting efforts to stabilize the country. The two diplomats discussed ongoing bilateral and multilateral consultations aimed at helping Syria establish an inclusive political framework that reflects the will of its people. The Iranian and Qatari foreign ministers highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to counter foreign aggression and protect Syria’s sovereignty. They also condemned Israel’s attempts to annex Syrian territory and undermine international agreements.

He told the media here that one of their conditions was the formation of a judicial commission on May 9 and November 26 incidents. The PTI leaders visited the opposition alliance leaders to invite them for the condolence meeting in Peshawar, to be held on December 15. “We had come here to invite our colleagues on December 15, Mahmood Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir, and others will participate in the condolence meeting,” he explained. Omar Ayub said that there would be consultations with Mahmood Khan Achakzai, as he was part of the consultation process on the future course of action. He clarified that there had been no negotiations with the government so far. He claimed that they had 5,000 prisoners in different jails and countless injured persons while referring to the recent protest the PTI held in Islamabad. Omar Ayub said that PTI founder chairman Imran Khan had added the names of senators Allama Nasir Abbas and Hamid Khan to the negotiating committee with the government. Sunni Ittehad Council chief and MNA Sahibzada Hamid Raza said that it was up to the government to negotiate or not, insisting that the negotiations would be on the basis of equality. “We people have got destroyed our homes, families and businesses, what are we afraid of now that we will be forced to [hold talks],” he remarked. He said that they are talking about negotiations for the sake of stability; however, they would not forget the sacrifice of the deceased workers. He alleged that civil martial law was currently in force in Punjab. A few days back, the PTI founder had announced formation of a five-member committee to hold parleys with the government or the establishment representatives. With the inclusion of two senators, the total number of committee members is now seven. It is significant to note that in recent few days, various PTI leaders had expressed their desire for negotiations. However, hitherto no contact had been established between the two sides, whereas Imran Khan announced to launching civil disobedience from December 16, in case their demands are not met. Meanwhile, another senior PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat said that negotiations with the government had not started, as only greetings had been exchanged. “If talks are held before December 15, it is good for the country because there is political instability in the country,” he maintained. Regarding the deadline for negotiations until December 15, he said that on December 15, PTI founder Imran Khan has given a call regarding remittances. He made it clear that if the situation remained as it was, the party leader’s orders regarding civil disobedience would be implemented. Meanwhile, PMLN Parliamentary Leader in the Senate Irfan Siddiqui said that the PTI would have to shun its deceptive approach if it was interested in serious talks. “The PTI will have to decide whether it wants talks or civil disobedience,” Senator Siddiqui said in a statement on social media platform X. He said that the party was desperate for negotiations with an ulterior motive of securing concessions. “But at the same time, it will was planning to launch civil disobedience with the sole purpose of inflicting harm on Pakistan,” he said. He said that negotiations and civil disobedience cannot go hand in hand. “If PTI is serious about negotiations, it should not add new burdens on its shoulders. The previous burden is already enough,” he said. The opposition parties alliance, meanwhile, agreed to attend the PTI’s condolence meeting and advised the major opposition party to focus on more consultations before arriving at any decision of protest against the government. A source, who was privy to the meeting, held here with veteran political and the alliance head Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the chair, reviewed the latest political situation and discussed the various aspects of PTI’s recent protest. He claimed the alliance expressed solidarity with PTI over the use of force against its workers but insisted it was too early to march towards Islamabad without building a momentum at local level. The leadership of PTI, the Sunni Ittehad Council, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) attended the meeting. Achakzai floated some proposals with regard to the future line of action and it was decided to place the same before PTI founder chairman Imran Khan. It may be noted unlike the recent past, the Tehreek Tahaffuz Aiyeen e Pakistan had distanced itself from the last month’s protest of PTI. The source said the meeting regretted the lack of proper strategy for the release of PTI founder and advised them to initiate protest at the district level. The meeting noted that decisions of the PTI leadership were affected by ambiguity. The opposition parties agreed to hold consultative meetings more frequently in view of the evolving situation.
