A group of health care workers from the Clinic in ward 31Zaka South, could not help but express their joy during the commissioning ofthe newly built staff quarters as they shared their horrible experiencesdescribed as ‘living like mice’ in the old houses that they shared. Established in 1963 and serving over 90 villages with anestimated population of 13000, the clinic never had decent shelter for thestaff as it only had two houses where six nurses and their families had toshare over the years. The houses started dilapidating and were no longer safe forthe nurses as the responsible authorities failed to repair them until theintervention by Solidar-Med to construct three more houses. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, one of thesenior nurses who had been at the clinic for almost two decades, FelistuzGwamuri said they lived like mice for decades sharing the two houses. She said they ended up using some of the clinic wards asaccommodation to minimise congestion in the dilapidated structures. “The houses were not enough to accommodate us and ourfamilies. We ended up resolving that some nurses use a part of the clinic foraccommodation to decongest the overwhelmed living quarters,” said Gwamuri. Gwamuri said the houses were not only small but had becomedangerous to live in, exposing them to snakes and other insects as well asharsh weather conditions. “At one point I narrowly escaped a snake bite when I wassleeping in the house. The snake spat its venom on me and that is when I wokeup to see a big snake in the ceiling. The other day my children escaped harm bya whisker after the ceiling fell on them while they were sleeping,” saidGwamuri. She also said there was no personal privacy as they almostalways ended up mixing work issues with personal issues. “The way we lived was distressing as we did not even havepersonal privacy which is required for every human being,” she said. Ward 31 councillor Tumai Madzikona thanked Solidar-Med forthe housing project and the community for its cooperation during the wholeprocess up to the stage of commissioning. “I want to appreciate the community for cooperating withour sponsors, throughout the whole process of the construction of staff houses. The situation was bad, these old houses were inadequate and substandard as someof them had broken doors and ceilings. “The new quarters have saved the nursing staff from theravaging storms that had been destroying structures across the district oflate,” said Madzikona. SolidaMed Project Coordinator Justin Mahuni said the staffhouse will improve staff retention and morale as their social life standardshave been improved in a decent manner. “The staff houses will help in improving staff retention asthe standard of living is better than before. Their morale at work will beimproved which will ultimately impact service delivery,” said Mahuni.TellZimNewsCOMMERCE — East Texas A&M University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee completed a toy drive this holiday season, donating toys to the Commerce Lil' Angels. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley knew the Eagles season rushing record could be his on Sunday with the type of stellar performance that has become the standard during his first season in Philadelphia. As for the exact moment Barkley hit the milestone, he wasn't sure — until the “MVP!” chants echoed throughout the Linc after a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter . “The records are great, they put a smile on your face,” Barkley said, “but the season is far from over.” Needing 109 yards to break LeSean McCoy's record, Barkley rushed for 124 yards and pushed his season total to 1,623 in a 22-16 victory over Carolina . Barkley needed just 13 games to pass McCoy, who rushed for 1,607 yards in 2013. He also overtook Wilbert Montgomery, who had 1,512 yards in 1978. “I never wrote the goal down to break it,” Barkley said. “You're always aware of it. That's how I train. That's how I operate in the offseason. I want to be great.” Barkley also maintained his pace to break Eric Dickerson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set in 1984 with the Los Angeles Rams. “That would be extremely cool to do,” Barkley said. “If it happens, it happens, and not with the mindset of, I'm scared to go try to do it. Whatever it takes to win football games.” Barkley is averaging 124.8 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson, he would become the top single-season rusher in NFL history. He needs 483 yards yards over the final four games to top Dickerson’s 40-year-old record. He averaged 6.2 yards on 20 carries against the Panthers to help the Eagles win their ninth straight game. McCoy, who was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame this season, remains the franchise’s rushing leader with 6,792 yards. Referencing his old uniform number, McCoy congratulated Barkley on social media with “a lot of love, coming from 2-5." “Being a fan of Shady's growing up, and seeing the spectacular things he was able to do with the ball in his hand, to be able to have my name mentioned with him definitely means a lot,” Barkley said. Barkley left the New York Giants in the offseason and signed a three-year deal worth $26 million guaranteed to join the Eagles, who made him the highest-paid running back in franchise history. The 27-year-old has been worth every dollar. Barkley is among the favorites for league MVP, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was the only player with better MVP odds entering Sunday. Barkley has a franchise-record nine 100-yard rushing games in a season. Although he was held out of the end zone Sunday, he began the day leading the league with four rushing touchdowns of 25-plus yards. Barkley, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, topped 1,000 yards three times in his six seasons with the Giants. He finished with 1,312 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2022 and rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 scores as a rookie. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who had been unwilling to spend on elite running backs, pounced on Barkley and the decision was celebrated as a success in Philly from the first game of the season. Barkley rushed for two scores and caught a TD pass in the opener against Green Bay. His three touchdowns were the most by an Eagles player in his debut since Terrell Owens in 2004. Barkley only soared in production and popularity from there, his highlight reel stamped by a reverse leap over the head of a Jacksonville defender last month. He's since vaulted over every running back ahead of him on the Eagles rushing list — and has a chance at NFL history. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL Dan Gelston, The Associated PressSUNRISE, Fla. — After recording his first shutout in nearly 14 months Monday, Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Jonas Johansson was looking forward to a late-night drive back to Tampa with his dad to start the holiday break. He had stopped all 36 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers, including nine against a power play that is ranked third in the NHL. Extra rewarding for Johansson was having his father, Per-Johan, at Amerant Bank Arena to watch him play for the first time in about a year. His dad was visiting from their native Sweden and made the 31⁄2-hour drive from Tampa to Sunrise to watch him play. “I’ll drive with him back too, so he doesn’t have to drive alone in the night,” Johansson said. “A little road trip.” Johansson’s father had plenty to be proud of. In a win that was a total team effort, Johansson was the unquestioned top star, shutting out a Panthers squad that created 41 scoring chances, including 17 on the power play. “He was outstanding,” said Lightning forward Brandon Hagel. “They had a tremendous amount of chances. We had blocks when we needed to, but we definitely had saves when we needed them as well. He was incredible (Monday), and super happy for him. And I think that’s a good one to finish off when you have three days off.” With the Lightning needing points after losing to the Panthers Sunday with Andrei Vasilevksiy in net, Johansson proved up to the task. The shutout was his first since Oct. 26, 2023, against the Sharks. He’s won his past three starts, stopping 86 of 89 shots for a sparkling .966 save percentage. Johansson, who made just five starts over the first 10 weeks of the season, is playing his best hockey at an important time. The two games against Florida were the first of six back-to-back sets for the Lightning over the next five weeks. “Personally, it doesn’t change anything for me,” Johansson said of his recent stretch. “I have the same approach if I don’t play, or if I play, I just try to stay sharp, have good practice habits. And then when I play, just, just do my best and see how far it goes.” Johansson, who started the first six weeks of last season while Vasilevskiy recovered from back surgery, struggled out of the gate this season, allowing 17 goals over his first three starts. Coach Jon Cooper said Johansson is beginning to benefit from the success he experienced at the end of last season, when he performed well despite infrequent work. “I think it happened at the end of the year,” Cooper said. “Last year, he settled into his role. Vasy came back, played the lion’s share of the games. But J.J. has got a unique (ability), and it’s a gift to be able to hang in there, not play for 7, 10 days and then come in and give you a good one. And those guys are hard to find, but he’s done a great job for us.” What stands out about Johansson’s current stretch is that he’s gotten better as games progress, even after allowing an early goal. In his Dec. 14 win at Seattle, he allowed a power-play goal to Brandon Montour on the Kraken’s third shot but nothing else, stopping the final 19 shots he faced. His Nov. 29 victory in Nashville was similar. Johansson allowed a goal to Roman Josi on the Predators’ first shot, then stopped 20 of the next 21, holding Nashville to two goals in a 3-2 win. “You kind of get into a rhythm,” said Lightning goaltenders coach Frantz Jean. “The challenge for a backup is really to get through the first period. Your reads are not as sharp. You’re kind of trying to find the connection to the game. Some guys that have a certain experience are able to do this quicker. “JoJo is actually pretty good at it. He’s been pretty good early in games this year, when you look at his overall body of work. But you’d like to think that the more he’s going to play, like, the more he’ll get in the rhythm and the easier it’s going to be for him to come out and be on top of his game.” The Lightning play another back-to-back coming out of the holiday break, so Johansson will start again this weekend against either the Rangers Saturday or the Canadiens on Sunday. Be the first to know Get local news delivered to your inbox! The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to get back into the win-column on Christmas Day as they be will hosting the Kansas City Chiefs. This certainly won't be an easy game as Pittsburgh will look to be just the second team during the 2024 season to take down the back-to-back Super Bowl champions. The Steelers desperately need a win after losing two games in a row, and if the organization still has hopes for winning the AFC North, the Steelers will need to find a way to win their final two games of the regular season, and that starts with Kansas City. The Chiefs are clearly one of the best teams in the NFL, although they haven't been dominating teams in 2024. Most of the Chiefs' wins have come in tight, one-score games that are usually decided near the end of the contest. Many NFL fans have accused the NFL of helping the Chiefs win some of these close games. The team has certainly gotten some favorable calls from the officials throughout the year. The person that will be in charge of the officiating at Acrisure Stadium on Wednesday is Craig Wrolstad, and his crew has shown some trends in how they call games. Wrolstad and his crew have not officiated a game involving either the Chiefs or the Steelers during the 2024 season, but the crew still has some tendencies. Aside from pre-snap penalties, the crew is a bit trigger-happy when it comes to throwing the flag for offensive holding. They have thrown the flag for offensive holding 35 times during the 2024 season. For context, their next closest penalty type has only been called on 19 occasions. This is obviously bad news for second-year tackle Broderick Jones , who has had his fair share of issues with being penalized during the 2024 season. Jones is the second-most penalized player on the Steelers, and he is by far the most penalized offensive lineman. He has been called for holding five times , while no other offensive lineman on the Steelers has more than four penalties total. There was a time when it looked like Jones' future in Pittsburgh may have been a little rocky. Rookie tackle Troy Fautanu took Jones' starting job in Week 2 and played well. Fautanu went down with a knee injury during practice the following week, and Jones has been back as the starter ever since. During that Week 2 game started by Fautanu, Jones took his place for one possession and single-handedly killed all of Pittsburgh's momentum. Jones had three penalties on one possession, two holding calls and one false start, and these penalties killed what should have been a scoring drive. He was also called twice for holding later in the year against the Baltimore Ravens. For the most part, Jones has been solid at right tackle as of late, and hopefully that continues on Wednesday. Pittsburgh won't be able to afford to lose much yardage due to penalties. Steelers Should Benefit From Officiating Tendencies On The Other Side Of The Ball While this officiating crew having an affinity for holding calls may hurt the Steelers' offense, it should help the Pittsburgh defense. Pittsburgh's edge-rushing group is arguably the best in the league, and TJ Watt , Alex Highsmith , Nick Herbig , and Preston Smith will all have the ability to draw some penalties. In addition to the edge rushers for the Steelers being elite, the Chiefs have some issues at both tackle spots. Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor is questionable to play, and starting left tackle DJ Humphries has already been ruled out of the game. Pittsburgh will likely be squaring off against a backup right tackle and Joe Thuney, a natural guard, at left tackle. Are you worried about the officiating on Christmas Day?
