The rising price of paying the national debt is a risk for Trump's promises on growth and inflation WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has big plans for the economy. He also has big debt problem that'll be a hurdle to delivering on those plan. Trump has bold ambitions on tax cuts, tariffs and other programs. But high interest rates and the price of repaying the federal government’s existing debt could limit what he’s able to do. The federal debt stands at roughly $36 trillion, and the spike in inflation after the pandemic has pushed up the government’s borrowing costs such that debt service next year will easily exceed spending on national security. 'Wicked' and 'Gladiator' make gravity-defying theater debuts NEW YORK (AP) — “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” have debuted in theaters with a combined $270 million in ticket sales. Their worldwide performance breathed fresh life into global box office results that have struggled lately. Together the films turned the moviegoing weekend into one of the busiest of the year. Jon M. Chu’s lavish big-budget musical “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted with $114 million domestically and $164.2 million globally. Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is a sequel to his 2000 best picture-winning original and launched with $55.5 million in ticket sales. “Moana 2” is being released Wednesday, so it looks like Hollywood might be looking at historic sales over the Thanksgiving holiday. Trump's Republican Party is increasingly winning union voters. It's a shift seen in his labor pick WASHINGTON (AP) — Working-class voters helped Republicans make steady election gains this year and expanded a coalition that increasingly includes rank-and-file union members. It's a political shift spotlighting one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Cabinet picks: a GOP congresswoman, who has drawn labor support, to be his labor secretary. Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her bid for a second term this month, despite strong backing from union members. They're a key part of the Democratic base but are gravitating in the Trump era toward a Republican Party traditionally allied with business interests. Trump raced to pick many Cabinet posts. He took more time to settle on a treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump launched a blitz of picks for his Cabinet, but he took his time settling on billionaire investor Scott Bessent as his choice for treasury secretary. The Republican not only wanted someone who jibes with him, but an official who can execute his economic vision and look straight out of central casting while doing so. With his Yale University education and pedigree trading for Soros Fund Management before establishing his own funds, Bessent will be tasked with a delicate balancing act. Trump expects him to help reset the global trade order, enable trillions of dollars in tax cuts, ensure inflation stays in check, manage a ballooning national debt and still keep the financial markets confident. Trump chooses Bessent to be treasury secretary, Vought as budget chief, Chavez-DeRemer for Labor WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent, 62, is founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management. He previously had worked on and off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. Trump also said he would nominate Russell Vought, 48, to lead the Office of Management and Budget, a position he held during Trump's first term. And Trump chose Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, an Oregon Republican, as his labor secretary, and Scott Turner, a former football player who worked in Trump’s first administration, as his housing secretary. Afraid of losing the US-Canada trade pact, Mexico alters its laws and removes Chinese parts MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico has been taking a bashing for allegedly serving as a conduit for Chinese parts and products into North America. Officials here are terrified that a re-elected Donald Trump or politically struggling Justin Trudeau could simply expel their country from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Mexico's ruling Morena party is so afraid its has gone on a campaign to get companies to replace Chinese parts with locally made ones. And its legislators are consciously tweaking the wording of major laws to try to make them compatible with the trade pact's language. Mexico hopes the rules of the trade pact would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away. Australia withdraws a misinformation bill after critics compare it to censorship CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s government has withdrawn a bill that would give a media watchdog power to monitor digital platforms and require them to keep records about misinformation and disinformation on their networks. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said Sunday that the government was unable to drum up the support needed to pass the legislation. The opposition spokesman, David Coleman, said the bill “betrayed our democracy” and amounted to “censorship laws in Australia.” The bill would have granted the Australian Communications and Media Authority power over digital platforms by approving an enforceable code of conduct or standards for social media companies if self-regulation fell short. He'll be the last meatpacker in the Meatpacking District. Here's how NYC's gritty 'hood got chic NEW YORK (AP) — The last meatpackers in New York's Meatpacking District have agreed to end their leases early and make way for development on their city-owned lot. A third-generation meatpacker says he is ready to retire and he'll be proud to be there when the building closes. The closure date has not been set, but will mark the end of over a century of industrial life in the Meatpacking District. Starting in the 1970s, a new nightlife scene emerged as bars and nightclubs moved in. Today it's a hub for shopping, tourism, and recreation and only echoes of that grit remain. US budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems? DALLAS (AP) — Delta and United Airlines have become the most profitable U.S. airlines by targeting premium customers while also winning a significant share of budget travelers. That is squeezing smaller low-fare carriers like Spirit Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Some travel industry experts think Spirit’s troubles indicate less-wealthy passengers will have fewer choices and higher prices. Other discount airlines are on better financial footing but also are lagging far behind the full-service airlines when it comes to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most industry experts think Frontier and other so-called ultra-low-cost carriers will fill the vacuum if Spirit shrinks, and that there's still plenty of competition to prevent prices from spiking. What to know about Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen money manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction and deregulation, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent is a past supporter of Democrats who has become an enthusiastic supporter of Trump. He’s an advocate of cutting spending while extending the tax cuts approved by Congress in Trump’s first term. He has said tariffs imposed during a second Trump administration would be directed primarily at China.Luke Humphries throws water over fans after Luke Littler final interrupted by whistling
Mari Petroleum becomes largest company on PSX by market capitalisation KARACHI: Mari Petroleum has emerged as the largest company on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) by market capitalisation, surpassing Oil & Gas Development Company (OGDC) for the first time. According to analyst Mohammad Sohail at Topline Securities, Mari Petroleum’s market value reached Rs984 billion ($3.5 billion), exceeding OGDC’s valuation of Rs963 billion ($3.4 billion). This milestone marks a significant leap for Mari Petroleum, which ranked seventh in market capitalisation during the same period last year, while OGDC held the top spot. Sohail attributed Mari’s rapid ascent to heightened expectations of hydrocarbon discoveries and a major bonus share announcement earlier this year. The company’s annual report for FY24 highlights a 7.0 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in hydrocarbon sales, reaching 39.01 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE). This growth is credited to the successful operations and capacity enhancement of the Sachal Gas Processing Complex (SGPC), accelerated production from the newly discovered Ghazij reservoir, and improved management of HRL, SML-SUL reservoirs and satellite fields. Mari Petroleum’s gas market share as an operator rose from 24 per cent in FY23 to 29 per cent in FY24, while its oil market share grew from 2.1 per cent to 2.5 per cent. The company also reported robust financial results for FY24, posting a profit-after-tax (PAT) of Rs77.28 billion, up nearly 38 per cent YoY from Rs56.13 billion in the previous year. In October, the company’s management revealed that the government had approved the renewal of Mari’s Development and Production (D&P) Lease until November 10, 2029. As part of this renewal, Mari Petroleum will contribute an additional 15 per cent of the wellhead value of gas produced to the federal government. Mari Petroleum also launched a subsidiary, Mari Technologies Limited, on September 25, 2024. The new entity will focus on data centres, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other petroleum and mining-related technologies. Addressing gas production curtailment, the government is working to manage the number of cargoes and gas volumes required by Sui companies to resolve intake issues. Regarding bonus shares, the management noted that many shareholders have made the required bonus tax payments. For those unable to pay, the bonus shares will be sold at market price, with any shortfall compensated by adjusting an additional 10 per cent of the shareholders’ shares held by the company, according to a report by Arif Habib Limited.Defending national champion South Carolina women defeated by UCLA 77-62 for their first loss since the 2023 Final Four(BPT) - Tech gifts are consistently some of the most popular presents to give and receive during the holidays. Family of Lyle and Erik Menendez told a judge Monday they want the men freed from the life sentences they are serving for the shotgun murders of their parents, as their court case suffered a delay. The pair have been in prison since a blockbuster trial in the 1990s that became almost compulsory viewing for millions of Americans. Television audiences were riveted by the gruesome details of the slayings of Jose and Kitty Menendez at the family's luxury Beverly Hills mansion. The two men, who have spent more than three decades behind bars, had been due to appear by videolink at a hearing in Los Angeles, their first court appearance in 28 years as a campaign to set them free gathers pace. But technical difficulties scuppered the appearance and the hearing was pushed back to the end of January. Nevertheless, Judge Michael Jesic called the two men's elderly aunts to the stand to hear them plead for the brothers to be freed. "I would like to be able to hug them and see them," Jose Menendez's older sister Terry Baralt, 85, said. "I would like them to come home." Kitty's sister, Joan Vander Molen, echoed that. "No child should go through what Erik and Lyle went through," she said. "They never knew if tonight will be the night when they would be raped." Prosecutors painted the crime as a cold-hearted bid by the then-young men -- Lyle was 21 and Erik was 18 -- to get their hands on their parents' $14 million fortune. But their attorneys described the 1989 killings as an act of desperate self-defense by young men subjected to years of sexual abuse and psychological violence at the hands of an abusive father and a complicit mother. The case saw a huge surge of renewed interest this year with the release of the Netflix hit "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story." The hearing comes after a campaign to secure their release, supported by Kim Kardashian and other celebrities. "Set them free before the Holidays!" wrote Tammi Menendez, Erik's wife, on social media last week. Public interest was such that the court held a lottery for the 16 seats in the public gallery. Nick Bonanno, a former high school classmate of Erik's, was the first to arrive at the court, taking his place at the head of the line at 4:30 am (1230 GMT). "I wanted to show support to... Eric and Lyle," he told AFP ahead of the hearing. "It's all about supporting and healing, not just for the families, but for us as a culture." Elena Gordon, 43, said she wanted "to witness a part of our local history." The hearing was intended as a starting point for lawyers working on three routes to free Erik Menendez, 53, and Lyle Menendez, 56. Attorney Mark Geragos has filed a writ of habeas corpus, an attempt to effectively vacate the brothers' first-degree murder conviction, which could free the brothers immediately. Another route is an effort to get the men re-sentenced on the same conviction, which would open the way for them to request parole. Finally, Geragos has submitted a clemency request to California Governor Gavin Newsom. Journalist Robert Rand, who wrote a book about the case, and who is in regular touch with the brothers, said the family was optimistic. But, he said, no one was expecting any quick fixes. "They're hopeful," he said. "They don't know what's going to happen. "I believe this could take much longer than was originally anticipated. It could be six months, could be eight months, could be a year, but eventually they will get out." With excitement over the case near fever pitch, tourists are regularly making pilgrimages to the Beverly Hills home where the killings took place. Australian Christian Hannah, who was born almost two decades after the double murders, made sure the home was a stop on his tour of celebrity hotspots, because of his fascination with the Netflix show. "It's really awesome seeing it in person," he told AFP last week. "It's just because you see it on TV and you see it in person, just feels really cool." pr-hg/amz/jgcNigeria and Saudi Arabia are advancing plans to strengthen their economic partnership, focusing on enhancing export credit, insurance frameworks, and market access. This development follows a series of high-level meetings held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as outlined in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance on Tuesday. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, led a delegation to the Kingdom on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the Presidential Economic Coordination Council. During the visit, the delegation engaged in high-level discussions with Saudi EXIM Bank, focusing on developing export credit and insurance frameworks, and expanding market access between the two nations. According to the statement, the Saudi EXIM Bank expressed interest in deepening relationships with Nigerian institutions and participating in future transactions involving Saudi government entities. “Additionally, the delegation held strategic talks with the Saudi Development Fund to explore potential areas of collaboration aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic development in Nigeria. The delegation also met with the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) to advance ongoing conversations about their investments in Nigeria,” the statement noted. SALIC reaffirmed its commitment to exploring further opportunities, emphasizing responsible investment practices that prioritize food security, output growth, and job creation in Nigeria. In a series of high-level meetings, the Nigerian delegation engaged with key Saudi ministers, including those responsible for Finance, Energy, and Economy and Planning, further cementing bilateral cooperation across vital sectors. The Federal Government has sought a $5 billion trade loan from Saudi Arabia to support its economic reform program. This request followed a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit held in Riyadh in November. Earlier in May, both nations had agreed to strengthen bilateral relations and explore investment opportunities in agriculture and trade, as confirmed by the Ministry of Information. By November 2023, the scope of their discussions had broadened to include technology, telecommunications, oil and gas, and mining, signaling a deepening partnership. Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have long enjoyed robust diplomatic relations, bolstered by their mutual membership in organizations like the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Recent engagements suggest a strategic pivot towards leveraging these ties to drive economic growth and development. The Tinubu administration has intensified efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with Saudi Arabia, marked by President Bola Tinubu’s three visits to the Kingdom since assuming office. Last year, the federal government reestablished the Saudi-Nigeria Business Council, an initiative previously discontinued under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. This development aims to foster closer economic collaboration and mutual investment opportunities between the two nations. The Nigerian delegation to Saudi Arabia includes Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and National Planning; Mr. Wale Tinubu, a member of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council; Ms. Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and the Economy; and Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, Deputy Governor (Economic Policy) of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The ongoing $1 million contest, in which 20 winners will each receive $50,000 worth of RXS tokens, has investors interested because it offers a chance to win money and interact with the community. With its unique strategy, large market size, and upcoming listings, Rexas Finance is poised to be a game changer. Analysts estimate that once listed, the RXS token's market cap will rise along with its price, making it a strong contender for the $10 billion milestone. Now is the time to invest in Rexas Finance and participate in a revolutionary financial shift. Pepe Coin (PEPE) Pepe Coin has grown in popularity as a meme coin, but its fundamentals are stronger than they appear. Pepe is trading at $0.00002 as of this writing, demonstrating resiliency in a tumultuous market. The coin just achieved an all-time high trading volume of $5.4 billion, thanks to whale accumulation and exchange listings on Coinbase and Robinhood. Pepe's technical analysis indicates a probable breakout, with a rising channel indicating a 280% surge. The token's community-driven approach, along with high social engagement metrics, has laid a solid platform for its future growth. Analysts believe Pepe can flip Shiba Inu, which might increase its market capitalization from the current $8.7 billion to $10 billion in the coming bull run. Sui (SUI) The native token of the Sui Network, SUI has seen a notable increase and peaked in November at $3.92 all-time. Trading at $3.76 as of writing, SUI has a market capitalization of $9.5 billion, 930% above its all-time low. Built for quick and effective transactions, its strong blockchain technology has piqued growing interest among users and developers. The Sui Network has also smashed records for daily wallet activity and transaction volume, demonstrating its growing popularity. With a 10-day moving average of $3.48 and a bullish RSI of 80.36, SUI is poised for continued gain. Analysts predict that its market capitalization will soon exceed $10 billion, thanks to its excellent technical and expanding ecosystem. Aptos (APT) Aptos (APT) has recaptured its Q1 levels and is trading at $11.79 as of writing, with a market cap of $6.4 billion. The cryptocurrency has surged 37.6% in the last two weeks, owing to significant accumulation and positive momentum. Aptos has a similar trajectory to SUI, with experts forecasting a breakout near $20. Aptos has shown constant growth, with higher highs and lows, making it a popular choice among investors. The token's 40% increase last month, combined with good support near $11, strengthens its argument for reaching $10 billion in market capitalization during the next bull run. ChainLink (LINK) Chainlink is trading at $14.71 as of this writing, with a market cap of $9.3 billion. The coin has broken out of an extended consolidation zone, and technical analysis shows it could surge above $35. Historical patterns show a 167% increase, mirroring previous market cycles. Chainlink's total value enabled (TVE) has risen to $17 billion, indicating increased usage. The project's unique ability to enable smart contracts with reliable off-chain data makes it important in the blockchain ecosystem. Rising demand suggests LINK's market cap should top $10 billion during the next bull run. Stellar (XLM) Stellar has grown by 160% in the past months. Currently trading at $0.20 with a market cap of $7.4 billion as of writing, the token has established a positive "Adam & Eve" pattern by surpassing important resistance levels. Though its immediate target is $10 billion, analysts think XLM may eventually reach a market valuation of $100 billion. Stellar is a first choice for worldwide remittances because of its focus on quick, cheap transfers. Its ecosystem expansion, combined with strong technical indications such as a rising RSI, contribute to its positive outlook. Litecoins (LTC) One of the first cryptocurrencies, Litecoin, looks set to mount a notable rally. Trading at $82 with a market capitalization of $6.7 billion as of writing, LTC has gained consistently since its use in peer-to-peer payments makes sense. The token's expected halving event and rising popularity help it to be a reasonable competitor for the $10 billion market value. The most recent collaborations and integrations have expanded Litecoin’s use cases, supporting its reputation as a consistent investment. Because of its strong foundations and market excitement, analysts predict that LTC will reach significant benchmarks during the next bull run. Conclusion The next bull run promises to be transformative for the cryptocurrency market, with numerous altcoins on track to surpass the $10 billion market value threshold. Leading the trend are projects such as Rexas Finance, which takes a unique approach to real-world asset tokenization, and Pepe Coin, which capitalizes on the meme coin appeal. Similarly, SUI, Aptos, Chainlink, Stellar, and Litecoin all have strong fundamentals with expanding ecosystems, making them top candidates. Rexas Finance, in particular, stands out for its ground-breaking products and rapid presale growth. With no guarantees that another opportunity might come his way — only the Atlanta Falcons interviewed Belichick last offseason — and unsure whether he could find the right fit in the NFL, the 72-year-old future Hall of Fame coach decided to go back to school. Belichick took his eight Super Bowl rings to North Carolina on a mission to build a college program the way he constructed two dynasties during 24 seasons with the New England Patriots. It starts with doing things his way. The Patriot Way is legendary. Perhaps it'll translate into the Tar Heel way. That's to be determined. But Belichick is back doing what he loves: coaching. And, he's going to run the show with his guys around him. An NFL team giving Belichick full control the way he had in New England seemed unlikely. Success at North Carolina could change that thinking. For now, Belichick's quest to break Don Shula's all-time record for most wins in the NFL is on hold. He's 15 victories short but the buyout clause in his college contract — a $10 million fee if done before June 2025 and $1 million after that date — leaves the window open for a return to the league. If Belichick stays in college or retires without returning to the NFL, his legacy is already cemented. Winning at North Carolina will only enhance his reputation. Losing won't impact his NFL resume. "He's one of the all-time great coaches. What he's done for the NFL and the game, we all know where he'll end up — in the Hall of Fame with a gold jacket," Dallas Cowboys executive Stephen Jones said Wednesday shortly before Belichick agreed on a five-year deal with North Carolina that pays him $10 million in base and supplemental salary annually with up to $3.5 million in bonuses per year. Belichick has his detractors. There's no denying he couldn't win without Tom Brady. He was 29-39 and had no playoff wins without No. 12 in his final four seasons with the Patriots. Critics have labeled him a cheater because of the Spygate and Deflategate scandals. He overlooked Aaron Hernandez's issues. He was tough on players, even alienating Brady in the end and letting him walk him away in free agency in 2020 only to see him lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl in his first season there. But Belichick instilled in players the importance of doing their job and presided over an unprecedented two-decade run of dominance that withstood changing times, free agency, salary-cap restrictions and much more. Brady has always maintained how important Belichick was for his career, giving him credit for helping him become one of the best players in sports. Now, Belichick is onto Chapel Hill in a surprise twist after he spent most of the NFL season reinventing himself as an entertaining and engaging analyst. Belichick is a football genius and his knowledge came across on television. But he also displayed a fun personality, trading quips with the Mannings and cracking jokes with Pat McAffee. "College kind of came to me this year," Belichick said at his introductory news conference. "I didn't necessarily go and seek it out. I had many coaches, probably a couple dozen coaches, talk to me and say, 'Can we come down and talk to you about these things?' Let's call it the salary cap of pro football relative to college football. The headsets, the green dot, the two-minute warning, the tablets on the sideline. Those were all rules changes this year for college football that were either or the same or similar to what we had in the NFL. These coaches said, 'Hey coach can we talk to you about how you did this? How you did that? How did you use this?'. "As those conversations started and then the personnel conversations started relative to salary cap and how you spend whatever the allotment of money you have. I'd say that started to make me a lot more aware of it because the first thing I would have to do is learn about it. .... As you learn different things about different programs you start to put it all together. There is some common threads and there's some variables." How will he do as a college coach? Nobody knows yet. Three of Belichick's former players were skeptical before he took the job. "There's a lot of things he can do, and obviously he's tremendous, and even showing his personality. But getting out there on the recruiting trail and dealing with all these college kids, that would be ..." Brady said before trailing off during a conversation on Fox's NFL pregame show last Sunday. Fellow former Patriots Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman also wondered the same. "Can you imagine NIL, and all that nonsense?" Gronkowski said. Edelman added: "Can you imagine Bill on a couch recruiting an 18-year-old?" But Belichick doesn't have to recruit kids on visits. These are new times in college sports. The NIL has dramatically changed the landscape. Plus, Belichick's name is enough. Just like Deion Sanders at Colorado. "I think it could be great for this game, honestly, if he can find a way to make college football more like this in terms of what's being asked of the coaches, the recruiting staff, the personnel, the NIL, and all those different things," Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Cohen said. "If he can make it a little bit less demanding on some of the coaches and create a great atmosphere and have success, I think it's great for our game. It's pretty cool to see, actually."
