The beloved leader's legacy extended far beyond his one term in the Oval Office with his sad passing at the age of 100 marking the death of one of America's kindest souls. James Earl Carter Jr. came from humble beginnings, born and raised on a peanut farm in Plains, Georgia, He was also the only US Naval Academy graduate to be elected to the White House before he took public office. But it was Carter's background that was part of his appeal, according to political scientist and professor at the University of Oregon, Daniel Tichenor. Tichenor exclusively told The U.S. Sun, “[Carter] was kind of relatively inexperienced, but that was also his enormous appeal because most Americans had lost trust in government and the presidency in particular and feeling that it had been corrupted." Carter ran for president in 1976, just two years after Former President Richard Nixon resigned from office following the Watergate scandal. Tichenor added that Americans also felt as if there were "a lot of deceptions surrounding the Vietnam War," which ended in 1975 after two decades of fighting. “The national spirit was low and here was somebody who was coming in with fresh ideas who wanted to make human rights and American morality front center in our foreign policy," the expert said. "And [Carter] also was promising unprecedented transparency and honesty as an elected official.” Most read in The US Sun Carter was "very popular at the outset," according to Tichenor. One of the highlights of Carter's presidency was the Camp David Accords, a pair of political agreements signed in 1978 by Egypt and Israel that aimed to bring peace to the Middle East. But, the Carter administration also took several political blows that the 39th president couldn't recover from. “He faced in his first term, a number of crises and challenges that really tested him and ultimately led to his defeat in the 1980 election," Tichenor said. This included the Iran hostage crisis, where 52 US diplomats and citizens from the national Embassy in Tehran were held hostage for 444 days, the 1979 oil crisis which was caused by a decrease in oil production during the Iranian Revolution, and the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. “All these things really shook confidence in his administration," Tichenor said. And in 1980, Carter lost the presidency to Republican nominee Ronald Reagan. POST-PRESIDENCY SERVICE While Carter might have been dealt a hard defeat, he didn't give up in his commitment to service, in fact, he stayed active in public engagements until 2021 at the age of 97. “The vast majority of former presidents usually spent their time in leisure," Tichenor said. "Instead President Carter really set a powerful model for how to really be an agenda setter and someone who is a change agent after one’s presidency.” Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, founded the Carter Center in 1982, which "seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health ," on the global stage, according to their mission statement. One of the center's health programs, which has been around since 1986, includes the eradication of Guinea worm disease. Kai Bird, Carter's biographer, wrote in The New York Times , "He once told me that he hoped to outlive the last Guinea worm. "Last year there were only 13 cases of Guinea worm disease in humans," he said. "He may have succeeded." Carter and his wife have also contributed to Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit which builds houses for people in need across the world. The former president was “somebody who was ready to roll up his sleeves and give back in a powerful way," Tichenor said. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize , which the Chairman of the Nobel Committee believed the former president deserved as early as 1978 after the Camp David Accords. This award has only been given to three other presidents and Carter was the only one to be handed the award after his presidency. Tichenor believes Carter was given the award for “a long tenure as a states person who tried to resolve conflicts around the world and to be a constructive force to encourage lasting peace." From peanut farmer to noble prize winner, Jimmy Carter committed his life to the well-being of not only the American people, but those in need around the globe. “I have one life and one chance to make it count for something," Jimmy Carter once said. "My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.” The 39th president of the United States , died after nearly two years in hospice care. His son Chip Carter confirmed the former leader died at his Georgia home on Sunday around 3:45 pm ET. Carter peacefully passed away surrounded by his family who paid an emotional tribute to the former leader. The two opponents in Friday’s Birmingham Bowl have taken highly ranked teams into multiple overtimes. They also are led by mobile quarterbacks who throw few interceptions. There’s a reason that Vandy coach Clark Lea calls the teams “mirror images” of each other, from playing styles to how their seasons went. “We’ve upset some people, they’ve upset some people,” Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia said. “We’ve had close losses. I think it’s a perfect matchup for Vanderbilt.” The Commodores (6-6) are playing in their first bowl game since 2018 and made national headlines with that upset of the Crimson Tide, then pushing then-No. 7 Missouri to double overtime and falling by a field goal to playoff team Texas. “This is a culmination of a special year for us,” Lea said “And there’s been a lot of effort and sacrifice to get this team to this point. It’s also a great opportunity to launch our team into what’s next.” The Yellow Jackets (7-5) took another playoff team, in-state rival Georgia, to eight overtimes before falling in the regular-season finale. They have wins over then-No. 10 Florida State and then-No. 4 Miami. “When you look at a bowl game, you look at the matchup,” Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said. “I believe they got this one right. This will be a good matchup between two very similar football teams in a lot of ways.” The Commodores are playing in their 10th bowl game and seeking their first postseason win since the 2013 victory over Houston, also in Birmingham. It’s bowl No. 47 for the Yellow Jackets but the first time in a decade they have made the postseason in consecutive years. Pavia appears eligible to return for a fifth season of college football based on a federal judge’s ruling, though the NCAA is appealing. “We’ve just got bigger dreams,” Pavia said. “We want to be playing in January come next season.” Lea said he saw Pavia in the hallway after they heard the news and “gave him a kiss on the side of his head, which shows you how excited I was.” “I’m happy for him. I’m happy for our sport, too. I think college football is better when guys like Diego play as long as they possibly can play.” Georgia Tech’s Haynes King has told reporters he will “probably” be back next season. Both quarterbacks are running threats. King has run for 578 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also could be 90 passing yards from becoming the third FCS player since 1959 with 10 touchdown passes, 2,000 yards and no more than one interception if he avoids a pick in the meantime. Pavia, the SEC Newcomer of the Year, tops all Power 4 quarterbacks with 716 rushing yards, and his 2,147 career yards on the ground is also tops among active QBs. He has been intercepted only four times. The Yellow Jackets have lost edge rusher Romello Heights (Texas Tech) and leading receiver Eric Singleton Jr. (Auburn) among their transfer portal departures. But Key thinks his team has the depth to overcome those losses in the bowl game. “You see some of these teams that are in dire straits right now as far as their ability to play a game,” he said. “That’s not the case at all.” Both teams have been among the nation’s best at avoiding turnovers. Vanderbilt has lost only seven turnovers, fewest in the FBS. Georgia Tech has only lost eight turnovers and is tied for second.

Unlike scores of people who scrambled for the blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight in recent years, Danielle Griffin had no trouble getting them. The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Genetics, hormones and variability in how the brain regulates energy can all influence weight — and a person's response to the drugs, Stanford said. Medical conditions such as sleep apnea can prevent weight loss, as can certain common medications, such as antidepressants, steroids and contraceptives. “This is a disease that stems from the brain,” said Stanford. “The dysfunction may not be the same” from patient to patient. Despite such cautions, patients are often upset when they start getting the weekly injections but the numbers on the scale barely budge. “It can be devastating,” said Dr. Katherine Saunders, an obesity expert at Weill Cornell Medicine and co-founder of the obesity treatment company FlyteHealth. “With such high expectations, there’s so much room for disappointment.” That was the case for Griffin, who has battled obesity since childhood and hoped to shed 70 pounds using Wegovy. The drug helped reduce her appetite and lowered her risk of diabetes, but she saw little change in weight. “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she said. “You want it to work like it does for everybody else.” The medications are typically prescribed along with eating behavior and lifestyle changes. It’s usually clear within weeks whether someone will respond to the drugs, said Dr. Jody Dushay, an endocrine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Weight loss typically begins right away and continues as the dosage increases. For some patients, that just doesn't happen. For others, side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea force them to halt the medications, Dushay said. In such situations, patients who were counting on the new drugs to pare pounds may think they’re out of options. “I tell them: It's not game over,” Dushay said. Trying a different version of the new class of drugs may help. Griffin, who didn't respond well to Wegovy, has started using Zepbound, which targets an additional hormone pathway in the body. After three months of using the drug, she has lost 7 pounds. “I'm hoping it's slow and steady,” she said. Other people respond well to older drugs, the experts said. Changing diet, exercise, sleep and stress habits can also have profound effects. Figuring out what works typically requires a doctor trained to treat obesity, Saunders noted. “Obesity is such a complex disease that really needs to be treated very comprehensively,” she said. “If what we’re prescribing doesn’t work, we always have a backup plan.” ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.
