Poseida Therapeutics executive chairman sells $283,866 in stock49ers need their own red-hat mojo Since 49ers standout Nick Bosa displayed a “Make America Great Again” hat in support of President-elect Donald Trump on TV after a football game (getting fined over $11,000 for violating NFL rules), and because his team has a mediocre record so far this year, maybe he should get another more appropriate hat. I suggest, “Make the 49ers Great Again.” — Margarida da Silva, Novato Our socialistic tendencies deserve a much closer look In a recent letter, Ed Bazquerio posits that, “‘blue’ states will be taxed to uplift ‘red’ states.” That sounds like the “equity” that I hear so much about — leveling the playing field as it were. To me, the consequences of equity means finding the lowest common denominator. That’s a divisive process. Conceptually, imagine the disincentive to an A student being given a B so a D student can have a C. Former President Ronald Reagan used to say that, back when he made his money in film, he would take the rest of the year off as soon as his income hit the 90% tax bracket. Why do the same work for 10% of the reward and give 90% to the “red states,” as it were? Had it been a more moderate rate, Reagan surely would have kept working and revenue into the tax coffer would have continued. There is a popular political observation from across the pond that can be adapted here: The problem with socialism (aka the taking and giving other people’s money away) is that, eventually, you run out of other people’s money. In Bazquerio’s case, it would be the blue state’s money. It seems that more of us are catching on every day. — Eric Fransen, San Rafael Seeing Texas helps me support Newsom’s plan I don’t think California is as bad as some think. I think it has a messaging problem. I just returned from two trips to visit family in Dallas and Austin, and was expecting some sort of Texas Republican cowboy nirvana. What I found was the opposite of nirvana. From what I saw, Dallas was a hotbed of the “haves” and “have nots.” I saw evidence of high crime and a high cost of living. I think Austin is a “hot mess.” Its infrastructure — airport, roads and parking — is undersized (some of it is in terrible condition). Meanwhile, it appears to have unchecked construction. It’s no wonder some people call it the “city of cranes.” They are everywhere, lifting steel into the new highrises. Both Dallas and Austin appear to have drug-addled people on the street. I think the numbers rival San Francisco. Oh, and it was 85 degrees and humid in mid-November. As I arrived home and thought about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statements about preparing for another Donald Trump presidency, I fully understand that he wasn’t speaking to issues of interest to the majority of American voters. But I know that Trump’s “communication machine” convinced enough people to deal the country a terrible hand with his election, so we better get more focused on our message. And to all the former Californians who moved to Texas: We’re here if you want to come back. — Polly Elkin, San Rafael Transgender issues were a big factor in the election I am writing in response to the recently published article about what some in Marin public health departments think will change when President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January (“Trump presidency casts shadow over Marin health care, social services,” Nov. 19). I found some of the comments to be silly. The most striking sentence for me was in regard to Janna Barkin, identified as “a Marin advocate for parents and families of transgender youths.” According to the article, “Barkin said she recently spoke at a gender identity training conducted by the Novato Unified School District to instruct teachers in how to be allies.” I do not agree with that path. When asked during exit polling following the Nov. 5 election, Blueprint, a public opinion research group, found that “transgender issues” was a top-three reason driving voters away from Vice President Kamala Harris. In the U.S., more states are shutting down transgender procedures for minors and Biden administration transgender “health-care protections” are facing many legal challenges. Make no mistake, I consider puberty blockers and surgeries for minors to be child abuse. They should be treated as such. — Tief Gibbs, Novato

Athlete of the week: Zionsville’s Maguire MitchellCEAT, an RPG company and Michelin, the global leader in tyres, yesterday announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for CEAT to acquire Camso brand’s Off-Highway construction equipment bias tyre and tracks business from Michelin in an all-cash deal valued at about $ 225 million (Rs. 65 billion). The transaction will include the business with revenues of around $ 213 million (Rs. 62 billion) in CY 2023 and global ownership of the Camso brand along with two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Camso is a premium brand in construction equipment tyre and tracks with strong equity in EU and North American aftermarket and OE segments. The Camso brand will be permanently assigned to CEAT across categories after a 3-year licensing period. This will expand CEAT’s product portfolio in the high margin Off-Highway Tyres (OHT) and tracks segments, which includes agriculture tyres and tracks, harvester tyres and tracks, power sports tyres and material handling tyres. Michelin will thus exit from the activities related to compact line bias tyres and construction tracks. CEAT has been investing in Sri Lanka for over three decades and manufactures over half of the country’s tyre requirements. CEAT’s joint venture in Sri Lanka with Kelani Tyres PLC, since 1998, is the market leader in truck tyres and commands a significant share of the passenger car tyre market as well as two-wheeler tyre market. CEAT is committed to grow its investments in Sri Lanka and remains steadfast in its role as a responsible participant in the nation’s economic activity and growth. This acquisition paves the way for enhancing valuable foreign exchange earnings in Sri Lanka besides contributing to employment opportunities both direct and indirect. The acquisition is also a significant milestone for CEAT in its ambition to become a leading global player in the high margin OHT segment. Over the last decade, CEAT has been focusing on building its OHT business, which now consists of 900+ product offerings and covers around 84% of the range requirement in the agricultural segment. Camso will give CEAT the ability to widen its product base into tracks and construction tyres. More importantly, it will give CEAT access to a global customer base including over 40 international OEMs and premium international OHT Distributors. CEAT brings in the ability for Camso to expand to other segments such as agriculture tyres. Both brands are highly complementary in their positioning and capabilities. Both CEAT and Michelin are committed to a coordinated and smooth transition for customers, suppliers and all employees. The transaction will be subject to regulatory approvals from relevant authorities. CEAT MD and CEO Arnab Banerjee said: “The Camso brand is an excellent fit with the growth strategy of CEAT’s Off-Highway Tyre business, thereby improving our margin profile. Access to the most premium customers, a high-quality brand and a qualified global workforce is what excites us the most about this acquisition. The track segment is a technologically superior segment with a limited number of global players. We also found high synergies between the two brands, CEAT and Camso, and are confident that both will benefit tremendously from their complementary capabilities and positioning. We have the benefit of more than 30 years of manufacturing experience in Sri Lanka andwe look forward to welcoming all employees and other stakeholders of Camso.” Michelin Senior Vice President – Beyond Road Business Line Nour Bouhassoun said: “Michelin firmly believes that CEAT is the right fit to carry on our bias tyres and tracks for compact construction equipment business. Both our companies are fully committed to ensuring a smooth transition for our employees and business continuity for our customers and suppliers. With this operation, Michelin is continuing to reshape its Beyond Road business, in line with the Group’s sustainable growth strategy.”WASHINGTON — A Texas man who was the first rioter to go on trial for the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was resentenced on Friday to nearly seven years in prison after he delivered an angry, profane rant to the judge who agreed to modestly reduce his original sentence. Guy Reffitt benefitted from a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that led to the dismissal of his conviction on an obstruction charge. His new sentence — six years and eight months — is seven months lower than his original sentence. Reffitt repeatedly shook his head and appeared to be agitated as he listened to U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich and a prosecutor describe his role in a mob’s attack on the Capitol. He told the judge that he was “in my feelings” and upset about the “lies and the craziness” that he perceived. “I was not there to take over no government,” Reffitt said. “I love this country.” “No one has a problem with your feelings,” the judge said. “It’s the actions you took with your feelings.” Reffitt stormed the Captiol with a holstered handgun on his waist. He also was carrying zip-tie handcuffs and wearing body armor and a helmet equipped with a video camera when he advanced on police officers outside the building. He retreated after an officer pepper sprayed him in the face, but he waved on other rioters who ultimately breached the building. Prosecutors said Reffitt told fellow members of the Texas Three Percenters militia group that he planned to drag House Speaker Nancy Pelosi out of the Capitol building by her ankles, “with her head hitting every step on the way down.” “His objective was to overtake Congress, physically and with violence,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Nestler. “In his own words,” Nestler added, “Congress was the demon and he was going to cut the head off the demon.” Reffitt is one of several Jan. 6 defendants to be resentenced after a Supreme Court ruling in June limited the government’s use of a federal obstruction law. The high court ruled 6-3 that a charge of obstructing an official proceeding must include proof that a defendant tried to tamper with or destroy documents — a distinction that applies to few Jan. 6 criminal cases. A jury convicted Reffitt of four other counts, including a charge that he threatened his two teenage children after returning to their in home in Wylie, Texas, after the riot. Reffitt’s son Jackson, then 19, testified that his father told him and his younger sister, then 16, that they would be traitors if they reported him to authorities and warned them that “traitors get shot.” Reffitt’s two daughters spoke favorably of their father during his resentencing. They described him as a caring father who doesn’t pose a danger to anybody. Prosecutors said Reffitt’s recent communications from jail indicate that he “views his imprisonment as an injustice and as part of a greater cause, and that he maintains pride in actions on January 6 and his involvement in the community of those who he believes have been wrongly prosecuted for their crimes on that day.” More than 1,500 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related crimes. About 1,000 of them have pleaded guilty. Roughly 250 others have been convicted by a judge or jury after a trial.
FBI director says he intends to resign at end of Joe Biden’s termFBI director Christopher Wray has said he plans to resign at the end of President Joe Biden’s term in January, an announcement that came a week and a half after President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate loyalist Kash Patel for the job. At a town hall meeting with the bureau workforce, Mr Wray said he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought”. Mr Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Mr Trump had picked Mr Patel for the role in his new administration. Mr Wray had previously been named by Mr Trump and began the 10-year term — a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations — in 2017, after Mr Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey. Mr Trump had demonstrated his anger with Mr Wray on multiple occasions, including after Mr Wray’s congressional testimony in September. “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people every day,” Mr Wray told agency employees. “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.” Mr Wray continued: “It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway — this is not easy for me. I love this place, I love our mission, and I love our people — but my focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what’s right for the FBI.” Mr Wray received a standing ovation following his remarks before a standing-room-only crowd at FBI headquarters and some in the audience cried, according to an FBI official who was not authorised to discuss the private gathering and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press. Mr Trump applauded the news on social media, calling it “a great day for America as it will end the weaponisation of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice” and saying that Mr Patel’s confirmation will begin “the process of Making the FBI Great Again”. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr Patel would herald a radical leadership transformation at the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency. He has advocated shutting down the FBI’s Washington headquarters and called for ridding the federal government of “conspirators”, raising alarm that he might seek to wield the FBI’s significant investigative powers as an instrument of retribution against Mr Trump’s perceived enemies. Mr Patel said in a statement Wednesday that he was looking forward to “a smooth transition. I will be ready to serve the American people on day one”.

I’ll be honest, shopping on y originally began as a selfish endeavour—I realised that if I could get my out ahead of the sales, I’d get more presents. And then I realised if I applied that same thinking to my own gift-giving, I’d also save money and my loved ones would get a few extra pressies too. Win-Win. It’s become somewhat of a Christmas tradition and I’ve learnt a few things over the years about the presents that are likely to be discounted, failsafe ideas that are guaranteed a smile, and most importantly, where to buy them.
