UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson was shot and killed on Wednesday morning in what police said was a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding an investor conference. The 50-year-old executive was shot at about 6.45am as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The gunman appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Mr Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police have not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Ms Tisch said, adding that the shooting “does not appear to be a random act of violence”. Mr Thompson was struck at least once in the back and once in the calf, Ms Tisch said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect, dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a grey backpack, then fled on foot down an alleyway before pedalling an e-bike into Central Park a few blocks away. The shooter was at large, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs. “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare,” the insurer’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, said in a statement. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the company said. “We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.” Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the suspect pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Police offered a reward of up to 10,000 US dollars (£7,860) for information leading to an arrest and conviction. The killing shook a part of New York City that is normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people are set to gather on Wednesday night for the annual Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree lighting. Mr Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that the executive told her “there were some people that had been threatening him”. She said she did not have details, but suggested they may have involved issues with insurance coverage. UnitedHealthcare is the insurance arm of the health care giant UnitedHealth Group. The group was holding its annual meeting with investors to update Wall Street on the company’s direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Mr Thompson’s death. “I’m afraid that we – some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. I’m sure you’ll understand.” Mr Thompson, a father of two sons, had been with the company since 2004 and served as chief executive for more than three years. NEW YORK (AP) — A gunman killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on Wednesday in a “brazen, targeted attack” outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police said, setting off a massive search for the fleeing assailant hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby. Brian Thompson, 50, was shot around 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel, police said. The shooter appeared to be “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire , New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Police had not yet established a motive. “Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” Tisch said, adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows someone emerging from behind a parked car, pointing a gun at Thompson’s back, then firing multiple times from several feet away. The gunman continues firing, interrupted by a brief gun jam, as Thompson stumbles forward and falls to the sidewalk. He then walks past Thompson and out of the frame. “From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the calf, Tisch said. The shooter, who wore a jacket, face mask and large backpack, fled through Midtown on foot before pedaling an electric bike into Central Park a few blocks away, police said. The assailant remained at large Wednesday afternoon, sparking a search that included police drones, helicopters and dogs. “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the insurer’s Minnetonka, Minnesota-based parent company, UnitedHealth Group Inc., said in a statement. "We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.” Police issued a poster showing a surveillance image of the man pointing what appeared to be a gun and another image that appeared to show the same person on a bicycle. Minutes before the shooting, he stopped at a nearby Starbucks, according to additional surveillance photos released by police on Wednesday afternoon. They offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that he told her “there were some people that had been threatening him.” She didn’t have details but suggested the threats may have involved issues with insurance coverage. Eric Werner, the police chief in the Minneapolis suburb where Thompson lived, said his department had not received any reports of threats against the executive. The killing shook a part of New York City that's normally quiet at that hour, happening about four blocks from where tens of thousands of people were set to gather for Wednesday night’s tree lighting. Police promised extra security for the event. The hotel is also a short walk from other tourist sites, including the Museum of Modern Art and Radio City Music Hall, and is often dense with office workers and visitors on weekday mornings. Many security cameras are nearby. “We’re encouraging New Yorkers to go about their daily lives and their daily business but to be alert,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel and a cellphone from the alleyway through which the shooter fled. They were also searching Thompson's hotel room, interviewing his UnitedHealthcare colleagues and reviewing his social media, Kenny said. Police initially said the shooter rode into Central Park on a bicycle from the city’s bike-share program, CitiBike. But a spokesperson for the program’s operator, Lyft, said police officials informed the company Wednesday afternoon that the bike was not from the CitiBike fleet. Health care giant UnitedHealth Group was holding its annual meeting with investors to update Wall Street on the company's direction and expectations for the coming year. The company ended the conference early in the wake of Thompson's death. “I’m afraid that we — some of you may know we’re dealing with a very serious medical situation with one of our team members,” a company official told attendees, according to a transcript. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today. ... It’s not uncommon for a former sporting favourite to appear on a reality show well after their career is over, but it seems that snooker star Kyren Wilson is keen to be on one during the prime of his. The reigning world champion takes on Stephen Maguire in the first round of the UK Championship on Monday, where he is bidding to go all the way at the Triple Crown event for the first time. Although Wilson, the current world No.2, knows exactly what he’d want to be doing if he wasn’t competing in York. The popular ITV series I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! is currently airing on ITV, with the likes of boxing great Barry McGuigan and Coleen Rooney - wife of ex- England captain Wayne - having ventured into the jungle. And now Wilson, 32, has admitted to having his own ambition to enter the Australian outback in Murwillumbah, New South Wales. In fact, he’s even discussed the prospect of three weeks Down Under with his wife. “I’d love a stint in the Jungle,” he told SportsBoom . “It’s quite funny actually. I’m a big fan of the show and I was watching it with my wife, and it was the episode where their families were giving them a luxury item each...Sophie said she would give me a game of UNO.” The timing of the show does not fall kindly for professional snooker players though. It takes place each year at around the same time as the tournament at the York Barbican, but that’s seemingly not the only issue ‘The Warrior’ would have to confront. “The only problem for me is the UK Championship will always take priority,” he added. “I always like testing myself, so I’d definitely give it a go. I’ve sky-dived from 13,000 feet before so I’ve ticked that one off. But I think fear wise it would be spiders, I’m not a fan of spiders.” Two snooker greats have previously taken taken part in the show, Jimmy White in 2009 and Steve Davis in 2013. ‘The Whirlwind’ made it to the final day, finishing in third place, while four years later Davis was the fifth person to be voted out. Wilson is not the only current star who has stated his desire to follow in their footsteps though. Back in 2022, current world No.1 Judd Trump echoed similar sentiments, and also shared the same drawback with the animals involved. “I’m a Celebrity is the real big one,” he told Eurosport . “Never say never to that one, it’s one that I would probably want to give a go but I absolutely hate any creepy-crawly things, spiders and snakes. So I would struggle with the challenges.” Sporting figures to have been crowned the ‘King or Queen’ of the jungle include cricketer Phil Tufnell, motorcycling icon Carl Fogarty, football manager Harry Redknapp and ex-Lioness Jill Scott. The former United captain also spent time in charge of the Tractor Boys between 2009 and 2011. Keane was only able to muster inconsistent form during his time in Suffolk and was ultimately sacked with the club struggling in the Championship , after clashing with protesting fans. The next chapter of his relationship with Ipswich on Sunday evening saw the 53-year-old prematurely leave the Sky Sports set on the pitch, where he was working alongside Kelly Cates, Izzy Christensen and Jamie Redknapp as a pundit. Keane had been receiving final instructions from producers as they prepared to return from an ad-break when he left the presentation area, putting down his microphone. Keane approached the nearest stand and engaged a fan in a stern conversation , as others around him heckled and declared: "Go in the car park and wait until the show's over. Keane was then filmed telling him. "I'll wait for you in the car park. "Meet me in the car park," the Irishman reiterated before he was ushered back onto the field by a member of Sky's production staff. Redknapp, who had also left the presentation area, watched on in the background. Fans remaining in the stand were encouraged to calm down as Keane departed. It came as more insults were hurled Keane's way, with one man racing across the upper tier to shout "F*** you Keane"- as first reported by Mail Online . It is not the first time that Keane has engaged in a confrontation with a supporter. The former Republic of Ireland international was headbutted at the Emirates Stadium in September 2023 . The disputes he has entered into with fans has seen Keane declare he is has no plans to continue as a pundit for the next decade. The role prove frustrating for the veteran. "I love football, but the hassle of matches, getting to games, and the hassle of fans. I was in court a few months ago with somebody headbutting me do you think I enjoy that side of it? Absolutely not," he said in August. "The games are fine. Getting to the games, parking up, people shouting your name good stuff, bad stuff it's a nuisance. Being a pundit in 10 years, not." Keane was able to undertake some post-match analysis after watching Ruben Amorim's first match in charge of United. he did not hold back in his assessment of the task that lies ahead of the Portuguese head coach. "He's got big problems," Keane said on Sky Sports. "The lack of threat in the second half, and Ipswich looked like they'd go on and win. They've not won at home all season. Same problems for Man United, but he's only had a week with them. "You have to give the man a chance but the threat going forward, it's a huge problem for Man United. It's not good enough." During his time as manager of the Tractor Boys, Keane won just 28 of his 81 matches and was sacked midway through the 2010/11 campaign, with Ipswich 21st in the Championship. This was the first face-to-face meeting since Starmer took office as prime minister in July. In recent months, China and the UK have seen good momentum in exchanges at various levels, as senior officials from the two countries, including ministers, have held talks covering areas such as foreign policy, the economy, finance, and energy. Observers said the meeting in Rio de Janeiro signals a promising trajectory, where those taking part in China-UK exchanges expect these discussions to translate into concrete actions, fostering sustainable growth and technological advancement for both nations. Jack Perry Junior, chairman of the 48 Group and CEO of London Export Corporation, said both nations, recognized for their technological innovation and forward-thinking strategies, have a unique opportunity to drive high-quality development initiatives. “Historically, partnerships in sectors like finance and education have yielded mutual benefits. This renewed engagement can pave the way for deeper cooperation in emerging fields such as green energy and digital innovation,” he said. “President Xi’s emphasis on high-standard opening-up and extending zero-tariff treatment to least developed countries aligns with the UK’s commitment to free trade and economic inclusivity,” Perry said, adding the UK’s move not to impose tariffs on the Chinese EV industry and not follow the EU approach shows that “the UK is doing what is best for its people and businesses”. Perry said there will be broad cooperation space where the UK could participate in China’s eight actions to support global development, including pursuing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. “The Belt and Road Initiative is evolving into a more mature and sustainable framework, with its emphasis on a green and digital Silk Road. This signals China’s understanding of global economic shifts and its desire to move from quantity to quality. For the UK side, this represents an opportunity to integrate our world-class financial expertise and green technology solutions into this ambitious network. Projects like these could set benchmarks for multilateral cooperation and elevate global infrastructure standards,” he added. H-J Colston-Inge, the co-founder of the Chopsticks Club, a British network for China-related professionals, and a director of the educational charity Engage with China, said she is encouraged that the two leaders have created a space to meet. “In my opinion, China and Britain — and the West more broadly — need engagement not only for the common good, but also for cultural enrichment, the development of knowledge and to encourage vital collaboration on climate change.... I hope that these high-level summit talks will be more than a backdoor to shifting the geopolitical climate but an open door to a new chapter of more positive bilateral relations,” she said. Engage with China works in UK schools to build a greater understanding of China among young people to enable school children to immerse themselves in Chinese culture. Increasing trade and boosting communications are “in all of our interests and may just help to stimulate thinking around what economic growth of the future might look like in a world with finite resources”, she said. In an interview with CGTN Europe aired on Tuesday, Kerry Brown, professor of Chinese Studies and director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London, said he thinks the current British government is clear-sighted, and puts the economy as its priority. “It knows its priority is trying to do something about Britain’s productivity issues. As the world’s second-biggest economy, China must play a role in that. Either we say, yes, we want China to play a role or we say, no, we’ll be able to deal with our economic problems ourselves,” he said. “Either way, you have to make a decision, and this government has made a pragmatic decision. ... I think it’s the only decision really that makes sense. And I hope that it is able to develop a rational, consistent approach to China that balances problems with opportunities.” Source: China Daily
