LOS ANGELES — UCLA football underclassmen carried their seniors off the field after Thursday’s practice as part of Bruin tradition, hoisting them above their shoulders in honor of the work they’ve done in their time with the team. Two days later, 42 players walked in the Senior Day celebration prior to the Bruins’ season finale against Fresno State at the Rose Bowl. Redshirt junior Carson Schwesinger took part in the celebration, indicating the possibility that the Butkus Award-nominated linebacker may not stay for another next season. Schwesinger and head coach DeShaun Foster said the FBS’ leading tackler has not made a decision as to whether he will go to the NFL. “He’s really going to do whatever is best for him in that situation,” Foster told reporters Wednesday. “I completely understand, especially if he gets the Butkus Award, and the way that he came out and performed this season. He deserves to get a shot and go to the NFL.” Receiver J.Michael Sturdivant also walked for Senior Day. Sturdivant, a redshirt junior, was UCLA’s third-leading receiver heading into Saturday’s game with 311 total yards and one touchdown. He averaged 31.1 yards per game. Sturdivant’s ability to stretch the field was underutilized in his two seasons at UCLA after he previously played two seasons at Cal. Offensive lineman Josh Carlin, edge rusher Oluwafemi Oladejo and defensive lineman Jay Toia each walked with the seniors Saturday and are expected to make a push for the NFL. “Incredibly grateful for the Bruin program, the UCLA program,” Oladejo told reporters Tuesday. “Came in here at the age of 19 and I’m now 21, so I’ve grown here a lot. Grown as a man, matured. Not just on the field but off the field as well. This means a lot to me.” Other notable players who took part in Senior Day: offensive lineman Garret DiGiorgio, quarterbacks Ethan Garbers and Chase Griffin, running back Keegan Jones, receiver Logan Loya, tight end Moliki Matavao and linebacker Kain Medrano. “A game like, this you want to send the seniors off on the right note,” Schwesinger said, “but on top of that, it’s being able to go out there and play competitively. We’re all here because we like to play football and you get a chance to do that, you’ve gotta go out and play your hardest.” Jordan Chiles promotes return Olympic and UCLA gymnast Jordan Chiles was in attendance for Saturday’s football game and gave a “4’s up” gesture on the big screen during the second quarter, promoting her return to UCLA. Chiles, a junior who took a year off to train for and compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, will make her return as a Bruin for the upcoming 2025 season. She made the announcement in an interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb in early August. Chiles won a silver medal in 2020 to make her the most decorated Olympian in UCLA women’s gymnastics history. She scored three perfect 10s in her 2022 season as a Bruin — two in floor exercise and one on the uneven bars. She won NCAA titles in both events in 2023 and was the runner-up in the all-around at the national championships. UCLA’s gymnastics season begins with its Meet the Bruins event on Dec. 14 at Pauley Pavilion.But after the girl replied asking Gary Bisset if he was the man who served her in the store, he continued to send her messages on Facebook in the coming months. Newcastle Crown Court heard that they were considered to be generally of no concern. But, shortly before Christmas the tone of the messaging changed and, in the words of the girl, they became, “creepy”. But Bisset set up different accounts and continued to message the girl. Advised by her father, she made her age clear to Bisset and told him she was still at school. But, in January 2023, she asked Bisset if he fancied her and he replied that he did. Miss Alastari said the girl made it clear which year group she was in at school and asked if he was bothered. Bisset told he she was “pretty” and suggested they should “hug”. Two days later she asked him when they should meet and it was suggested they should go to the cinema. Miss Alastari said after this Bisset turned the conversation to sexual matters and also asked her to send him a picture of her lying in bed. After she sent him a message asking to meet he said he would like to do so and to kiss her. When the girl’s father became aware of the nature of the messaging he alerted the Child Online Safety Team (COST) and gave them details of his daughter’s account. A member of the paedophile-hunting group made inquiries into Bisset and located his address, while on February 1, last year, another COST member and the girl’s father attended his property and confronted him. The police were then informed and the defendant was arrested, making no comment when interviewed. In her victim statement, the girl said it has had a significant impact on her since the defendant’s arrest. She said she did not like to be alone at home when her parents are out, while she is conscious using public transport, and she has serious trust issues. The episode has also left her doubting whether she should use social media, and worried about going to shopping centres as she feels the outcome could have been more serious. Her father said his daughter is worried about going to the shopping centre where she first encountered the defendant as she is worried about seeing him. The court heard the victim has an adhd diagnosis and since events involving Bisset she has increased her medication. The 43-year-old defendant of Daffodil Close, Winlaton, Gateshead, who is of previous good character, admitted a single count of sexual communication with a child. (Image: Child Online Safety Team (COST)) Chris Baker, in mitigation, said a psychologist’s report prepared for the court indicates that the defendant, who he described as, “clearly a very a basic man”, suffers with a borderline learning difficulty. Mr Baker said the Probation Service believes it can work with the defendant to address his issues. “Society would be probably better protected in the long run if Mr Bisset’s issues are dealt with rather than subject him to punishment. “He would be very vulnerable if sent to prison. “He also has long-term medical issues which require a significant amount of medication.” Judge Penny Moreland said over the space of about a month the defendant communicated in a sexual manner with the girl. “There had been sporadic contact for some time and from December 2022 the communication became what the girl described as ‘creepy’. “You admit it was sexual communication for sexual gratification. “She blocked you, but you set up the new Facebook and Snapchat accounts and kept on contacting her in a persistent way. “You were asked if you were bothered that she was 15 and you said: “No”.” It was only when matters were brought to her father’s attention and he sought assistance from the Child Online Safety Team that it brought Bisset’s activities to an end. Judge Moreland said it has affected the victim’s college attendance, made her mistrustful of men, while she has had to increase her medication for adhd and sought help for anxiety. “This was sustained and persistent communication involving use of different online profiles.” Judge Moreland said she accepted that the defendant may not have been aware of the girl’s vulnerabilities. “You have reached 43, been married a number of years and held down a number of jobs, but I accept you have a low IQ which has an impact on your capabilities and you have health issues. “Most importantly, the Probation Service takes the view there’s the prospect of rehabilitation and, so, it’s just possible to suspend the sentence.” (Image: The Northern Echo) She imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, during which the defendant must attend 50 rehabilitation activity days working with the Probation Service. Authorities report that the incident took place on December 23, 2024, at approximately 7:49 p.m. when an unidentified male suspect allegedly approached a store employee and demanded they open the cash register. During the confrontation, the suspect reportedly implied he had a firearm and threatened to harm the employee. The employee complied with the demands, and the suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Officials described the suspect as a black male dressed in dark-colored clothing. Currently, no surveillance footage or images have been released. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Robbery Unit is overseeing the investigation and continues to seek information about the case. The building, said to be owned by a “very wealthy” resident of Umuahia, collapsed on Christmas Day when the site workers had taken the day off. The cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established, but some residents living near the building claimed that substandard materials may have been used by the contractor, which they alleged compromised the integrity of the structure. A resident who pleaded anonymity thanked God for sparing the lives of the site workers, saying: “Yesterday was Christmas Day and there was no work. If not, who knows what would have happened?” He said that the contractor had gone into hiding after realising what had happened to avoid being arrested or questioned. When DAILY POST visited the site on Thursday afternoon, a bulldozer was demolishing the remaining parts of the building to ensure they did not collapse onto adjacent houses. Messages boldly pasted around the site by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, UCDA, dated December 26, 2024, declared that the site had been sealed. When DAILY POST contacted the Public Relations Officer of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mrs Nkeiru Ogba, she confirmed that her office had visited the site of the collapsed building to ascertain what had happened. She said that the owners of some of the buildings that had collapsed in the state did not follow due process or had refused to comply with official regulations. Jason Krasley left his job with the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania in 2021 and was hired by the Denver-based SafeSport center to look into sensitive cases involving sex abuse and harassment. The center said it conducts multiple interviews and a “comprehensive background check” of potential employees. And there’s just not as much call these days for switchboard operators as there once was. Oh, and knocker-uppers have vanished from British streets as well. Wait, what? This story is a reminder of the fundament truth in George Bernard Shaw’s quip that “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.” In Brit Speak, to “knock someone up” is slang for waking them up. The name derives from knocking on a bedroom door to rouse a sleeper. Here on this side of the pond ... well, let’s just say “knocking someone up” involves something completely different and leave it at that. Getting back to our British cousins, there’s more involved than just a simple phrase. From the Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century up to World War II, people in the U.K. were actually paid to be “knocker uppers.” As large factories and business offices began appearing, people suddenly had to show up for work by a specific time, often early in the morning. That could be difficult for sound sleepers in that era long before alarm clocks. (And when they were invented, many early models were unreliable.) Being late too many times carried the very real possibility of losing a much-needed job. What to do? Enter the knocker uppers. For a few pennies a week, they would come around to homes and make sure working-class people were awake. They did so by utilizing a variety of methods. Most common was the use of a long, thin pole, similar to a fishing rod. They would lift it up and rap on a bedroom window until the party inside got out of bed. Sometimes, rattles were used. Some enterprising people even used peashooters to hit the glass windows and awaken their clients. They were especially popular in industrial cities like Manchester but were also commonly found in most metro areas. So, just who were the knocker uppers? Poor retirees, mostly. Older men and women looking for extra money to help them scrape by. Moms-to-be, frequently not allowed to work during pregnancy, did it to help replace their lost wages. Sometimes, police officers walking the beat would supplement their meager income by performing the service. Children were occasionally employed, though not often due to their fondness for oversleeping. In England’s coal country, miners sometimes hung slate boards on the outer walls of their houses and wrote the times they were to be awakened. They eventually gained the nicknames “knocky-up boards” or “wakeup slates.” And the practice wasn’t limited to England. Although the custom didn’t catch on in this country, knocker-uppers were also used in Ireland and the Netherlands. But nowhere was the practice as widespread as it was in Britain’s working-class neighborhoods. All good things must eventually come to an end, and so it was for the knocker-uppers. Alarm clocks became both more affordable and dependable after World War II. Most knocker-uppers stopped making their rounds in the 1950s, with a few isolated pockets carrying on into the 1970s. A woman named Molly Moore claimed to be the last practitioner of the trade, as was her mother before her. Both women favored the peashooter approach to making sure their clients greeted the new day. It’s a quaintly picturesque image today: An old man or woman wandering down a street in the morning’s first light, reaching up and gently tapping on a window, then moving on down the block and repeating the process until finally, with the sun inching higher overhead, a whistle blows, and the workday begins anew once more.GEORGETOWN 100, ALBANY 68
