(The Center Square) – Billionaire and advisor to President-elect Donald Trump Elon Musk was denied by a judge this week a $56 billion compensation package for his work as CEO of Tesla, the successful electric automaker that pioneered EV technology in the U.S. The package had been approved by more than 70% of Tesla's board of directors. A Tesla shareholder who owned just nine shares of stock in the company sued to block the 2018 compensation agreement. In addition to blocking the package this week, the judge in the case, Delaware Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick, awarded the plaintiff's attorneys $345 million, which Reuters reported is “one of the largest fee awards ever in securities litigation.” The Associated Press reported that “the fee award amounts to almost exactly half the current record $688 million in legal fees awarded in 2008 in litigation stemming from the collapse of Enron.” The ruling was widely criticized as government overreach into the private sector. Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of ARKinvest, called the ruling a "mockery." "Adding judicial insult to injury, Delaware Judge McCormick has ordered #Tesla shareholders to pay the plaintiff’s lawyers $345 million! The plaintiff owned 9 shares of $TSLA," Wood wrote on X. "McCormick is making a mockery of the sense of fairness essential to our American judicial system." Pershing Square CEO Bill Ackman wrote: "This decision and the payola for lawyers is absurd. We are going to see a migration of Corporate America from Delaware." The unique compensation package was high risk, high reward. If Musk hit all of his target goals to make the company hugely successful, as he did, then he would be awarded the compensation package. If he did not hit those marks, he would receive zero dollars. Musk and Tesla vowed to appeal. McCormick first voided the pay agreement in January, saying it was unfair and that the Tesla board did not negotiate well enough with Musk. In response, a supermajority of more than 70% of Tesla shareholders voted to approve the payment package for Musk earlier this year, but again McCormick sided this week against Musk and Tesla shareholders. Musk called the ruling a form of “lawfare.” “Shareholders should control company votes, not judges,” Musk wrote on X. Many other Tesla shareholders blasted the decision and the attorney fee decision. "The lawyers, judges, and attorneys did not create net-positive shareholder value from this clownery," Alex Guichet, who said he is a Tesla employee, wrote on X. "They do not deserve a single dollar. We employees did. We supported the shareholder vote with our own yes votes too. This is wrong on so many levels." Shareholder Jeremy Goldman wrote: "The majority of the owners of the company have made their desires known and it's just crazy that a single judge can basically say haha, no. I don't really care what you want. Also pay a few hundred million for the privilege of being ignored." WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday reached a required agreement with President Joe Biden’s White House to allow his transition staff to coordinate with the existing federal workforce before taking office on Jan. 20. The congressionally mandated agreement allows transition aides to work with federal agencies and access non-public information and gives a green light to government workers to talk to the transition team. But Trump has declined to sign a separate agreement with the General Services Administration that would have given his team access to secure government offices and email accounts, in part because it would require that the president-elect limit contributions to $5,000 and reveal who is donating to his transition effort. The White House agreement was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1, according to the Presidential Transition Act, and the Biden White House had issued both public and private appeals for Trump’s team to sign on. The agreement is a critical step in ensuring an orderly transfer of power at noon on Inauguration Day, and lays the groundwork for the White House and government agencies to begin to share details on ongoing programs, operations and threats. It limits the risk that the Trump team could find itself taking control of the massive federal government without briefings and documents from the outgoing administration. As part of the agreement with the White House, Trump’s team will have to publicly disclose its ethics plan for the transition operation and make a commitment to uphold it, the White House said. Transition aides must sign statements that they have no financial positions that could pose a conflict of interest before they receive access to non-public federal information. Biden himself raised the agreement with Trump when they met in the Oval Office on Nov. 13, according to the White House, and Trump indicated that his team was working to get it signed. That would clear the way for transition aides and future administration appointees and nominees to begin accessing classified information before Trump takes office. Some Trump aides may hold active clearances from his first term in office or other government roles, but others will need new clearances to access classified data. Trump’s team on Friday formally told the GSA that they would not utilize the government office space blocks from the White House reserved for their use, or government email accounts, phones and computers during the transition. Federal agencies are receiving guidance on Tuesday on how to share sensitive information with the Trump team without jeopardizing national security or non-public information. Losing to older brother John Harbaugh and seeing the Los Angeles Chargers' four-game winning streak snapped Monday night might be the least of Jim Harbaugh's problems this week. The Chargers are holding their breath that running back J.K. Dobbins isn't seriously hurt after he left with a knee injury late in the first half of the Chargers’ 30-23 loss to the Baltimore Ravens . Article content If it feels like driving has gotten a bit more hair-raising lately, a study coordinated by the firm of Preszler Injury Lawyers will confirm your suspicions. Using data from Transport Canada and other sources, the study shows motor vehicle fatalities are on the rise in this country. In fact, the law firm’s study suggests recent years have broken about three decades’ worth of downward trend. During 2022, the most recent calendar year for which the firm says data is available, the number of people killed on Canadian roads totalled 1,931 souls — apparently the highest in about ten years. More worryingly, the firm uses modelling and partial data to speculate road fatalities in the 2023 and 2024 calendar years will continue to rise, likely exceeding 2,000 deaths once complete numbers are available. A chart provided by Preszler Injury Lawyers using Transport Canada source data shows the trend. Motor vehicle fatalities regularly exceeded 3,000 per year until the late 1990s and dropped under the 2,000 mark about a decade later at which point it seems to flatten out around 1,800 deaths per annum. The legal group then drilled down further into the data, taking numbers for each of our ten provinces and comparing it to population count. This revealed that, as a per capita measure, Ontario statistically has the lowest road fatality rate, at 4.1 deaths per 100,000 people. Quebec measured 4.2 on the same scale. At the opposite end of the spectrum, New Brunswick saw 8.2 fatalities per capita; and Manitoba settled at 7.1 deaths per 100,000 residents. Further insight can be gained by looking at the data along lines which have divided Canadians since the dawn of time: rural versus urban. Big cities like Toronto and Ottawa had fewer lives lost on the road compared to the year prior, resulting in per capita fatalities of 0.8 and 1.6 respectively, using the same measure as applied to the provinces overall. Vancouver was even lower, at 0.7 fatalities per 100,000 residents during that year. While the total number of crashes in urban areas outstripped those in rural spots, it was the latter in which wrecks were three times more likely to claim a life. Higher speeds are pointed to as a major factor in this stat, since it is easier to achieve extra-legal velocities when not hemmed in by gridlock; in other words, when a crash does happen outside city limits, it’s likely to be more serious in terms of injury. According to the criminal complaint, Driskill, 48, was living in Coleman, Texas, with his parents. Coleman is south of Abilene. In September, a witness called the Coleman Police Department to report child molestation. The witness told police that in June, Driskill confessed he sexually assaulted a child in Coleman and had recordings of the molestation on his phone and computer. When interviewed by police, Driskill denied sexually abusing a child. When the child was interviewed by state investigators, the child did not make an outcry, according to the criminal complaint. Court documents show that at that time, there was no additional evidence and no outcry, so the Coleman Police closed their case. The interview with Driskill was recorded and still images from the video were uploaded to a database by the FBI. Earlier this year, the FBI was notified about pornography on the dark web posted by an unknown user on July 27, 2024, and July 29, 2024. The videos show the face of a child and the face of at least one of three unknown adult males. All adult males were involved in pornographic acts in the video, according to the court documents. The criminal complaint shows investigators were able to use social media posts made by Driskill to match his image to one of the men in the videos found on the dark web. The complaint also shows Driskill's tattoos matched the ones on a man in the produced pornography found. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in federal prison. The Nigerian Navy has disclosed the arrest of a syndicate engaged in the smuggling of petroleum products and other illicit goods to Cameroon and various nations in the Gulf of Guinea region from Akwa Ibom State. Captain Uche Aneke, the Commanding Officer of the Base, confirmed this development while transferring the suspects, noting that they were apprehended by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy in the coastal waters of Ibaka within the Mbo local government area of the state.
