UPPER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Authorities in Montgomery County, Pa. are alerting the public to the presence of coyotes. Police in Lansdale and Upper Merion Twp. have put out notifications about coyote sightings in recent weeks. The animals have a presence in every county of the state, and authorities say the number of coyotes here is growing. "You might've had coyotes in your neighborhood all summer but all that dense vegetation makes it less likely for people to notice them," explained Game Warden Matthew Johnson with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Johnson says coyotes are nocturnal and hunt at night. "This time of year, when we get into the winter time, everything in the wild is getting more desperate. Food sources are diminishing as the winter goes on," Johnson stated as to a combination of reasons why we might be seeing more coyotes. Coyotes likely won't attack a human and view large dogs as a threat, but smaller pets are vulnerable. "If they find a smaller cat or dog that is accessible, there's nothing saying they won't try to pursue it," said Johnson. People we talked to on Tuesday said, so far, their experiences have been at a distance. "I haven't heard any but I've seen some around our school. They're eating good because they're kind of big," joked Christina Brown of Cheltenham. "Coyotes - you think that's out in the Rocky Mountains or something," said Dana Jones of North Wales. "We've seen them on our Ring cam. Not very often, but you definitely hear them. Not recently, more in the fall," said Christine Mariani of Norristown. Ms Hand, who accused the sportsman of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018, won her claim against him for damages in a civil case at the High Court in the Irish capital on Friday. The total amount of damages awarded to Ms Hand by the jury was 248,603.60 euro (£206,714.31). Mr McGregor said in a post on social media on Friday that he intends to appeal against the decision. That post has since been deleted. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Mr Harris said he told Ms Hand of the support she has from people across Ireland. “I spoke with Nikita today and I wanted to thank her for her incredible bravery and her courage,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that she knew how much solidarity and support there was across this country for her bravery. “I also wanted to make sure she knew of what the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre had said yesterday – that so many other women have now come forward in relation to their own experiences of sexual abuse as a result of Nikita’s bravery.” The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said the case has had a “profound effect” on the people the charity supports, and that over the first 10 days of the High Court case, calls to its national helpline increased by almost 20%. It said that first-time callers increased by 50% compared to the same period last year, and were largely from people who had experienced sexual violence who were distressed and anxious from the details of case and the views people had to it. Mr Harris said: “I wanted to speak with her and I wanted to wish her and her daughter, Freya, all the very best night, and I was very grateful to talk with Nikita today. “Her bravery, her courage, her voice has made a real difference in a country in which we must continue to work to get to zero tolerance when it comes to domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. “I don’t want to say too much more, because conscious there could be further legal processes, but I absolutely want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her courage, for using her voice.” Justice Minister Helen McEntee praised Ms Hand’s bravery and said she had shown “there is light at the end of the tunnel”. She said: “I just want to commend Nikita for her bravery, for her determination and the leadership that she has shown in what has been – I’ve no doubt – a very, very difficult time for her and indeed, for her family. She added: “Because of wonderful people like Nikita, I hope that it shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there are supports available to people, and that there is justice at the end of the day.” Ms Hand said in a statement outside court on Friday that she hoped her case would remind victims of assault to keep “pushing forward for justice”. Describing the past six years as “a nightmare”, she said: “I want to show (my daughter) Freya and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” During the case, Ms Hand said she was “disappointed and upset” when the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided not to prosecute the case after she made a complaint to the Irish police. In a letter to her in August 2020, the DPP said there was “insufficient evidence” and there was not a reasonable prospect of conviction. Ms Hand asked the DPP to review the decision, saying she felt she was being treated differently because one of the suspects was famous. Researchers unveiled the first comprehensive population estimate of Uganda's lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas in nearly two decades. Conducted across six major protected areas -- including the 4000 km 2 Murchison Falls and the 2400 km 2 Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area -- this innovative study was a collaborative feat involving more than 100 conservation stakeholders. Using advanced spatial capture-recapture methods set a new standard for wildlife monitoring in Africa, the findings are already influencing conservation policy, and served as the foundation for Uganda's new Strategic Action Plan for Large Carnivore Conservation (2023-2033). Lions are in decline across most protected areas while hyenas show resilience The study showed that populations of lions in the Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley National Parks were critically low, with fewer than 40 and 20 individuals remaining respectively. In contrast, spotted hyena populations appear to be faring well with the Murchison Falls National Park population holding Africa's largest density recorded to date at 45 individuals per 100 km2. The radically different numbers of hyenas displaying resilience could be indicative of a trophic imbalance. "We could be seeing a release in hyena numbers as populations of lions decline," Dr Braczkowski said. "However in places like Murchison Falls, we are seeing high densities of all three species, lions, hyenas, and leopards." Murchison Falls National Park is the last critical lion stronghold in Uganda The study identified the Murchison Falls National Park (Uganda's largest protected area) as a vital area for lion conservation. The region supported high lion densities (seven lions per 100 km 2 ) and an abundance of 240 individuals in a 3233 km 2 sampling area compared with Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley despite significant pressures from wire snare poaching and oil exploration, making it a critical priority conservation area in the country. Leopards holding on across most of the country While leopard densities varied, Murchison Falls recorded some of the highest in Africa at 14 individuals per 100km 2 , the highest recorded to date in Africa. Similarly to the national parks' lion populations, it is highly probable that the anti-poaching efforts by the government and several non-government organisations (including Uganda Conservation Foundation, Snares to Wares, and ICON) were preventing the low densities observed in other parts of the country. Collaboration and training key to such a large effort Griffith University lead researcher Dr Alexander Braczkowski said one of the most striking results from the survey was that it brought together more than 100 participants from 20 different NGOs, lodges, and conservation groups, meaning people who may not have had an opportunity to be involved in science previously now had an opportunity to survey and engage in science on the animals they lived closest to. He added that this was critical for the long-lasting capacity needed to maintain a solid understanding of how these carnivore populations performed over time, especially against conservation action. "This survey highlights both the challenges and successes of Uganda's carnivore conservation," Dr Braczkowski said. "The collaborative nature of this work -- spanning governments, NGOs, and local communities -- is a testament to what's possible for wildlife conservation. More importantly, these are the kinds of training exercises that are most needed if we hope to build the science capacity in the places that need it most" Dr Braczkowski said the results sounded an alarm for Uganda's iconic carnivores, whose survival was jeopardised by poaching, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. Three long days of counting in the General Election finished late on Monday night when the final two seats were declared in the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan. Fianna Fail was the clear winner of the election, securing 48 of the Dail parliament’s 174 seats. Sinn Fein took 39 and Fine Gael 38. Labour and the Social Democrats both won 11 seats; People Before Profit-Solidarity took three; Aontu secured two; and the Green Party retained only one of its 12 seats. Independents and others accounted for 21 seats. The return of a Fianna Fail/Fine Gael-led coalition is now highly likely. However, their combined seat total of 86 leaves them just short of the 88 needed for a majority in the Dail. While the two centrist parties that have dominated Irish politics for a century could look to strike a deal with one of the Dail’s smaller centre-left parties, such as the Social Democrats or Labour, a more straightforward route to a majority could be achieved by securing the support of several independent TDs. For Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin and current taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Simon Harris, wooing like-minded independents would be likely to involve fewer policy concessions, and financial commitments, than would be required to convince another party to join the government benches. Longford-Westmeath independent TD Kevin “Boxer” Moran, who served in a Fine Gael-led minority government between 2017 and 2020, expressed his willingness to listen to offers to join the new coalition in Dublin. “Look, my door’s open,” he told RTE. “Someone knocks, I’m always there to open it.” Marian Harkin, an independent TD for Sligo-Leitrim, expressed her desire to participate in government as she noted that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael were within “shouting distance” of an overall majority. “That means they will be looking for support, and I certainly will be one of those people who will be speaking to them and talking to them and negotiating with them, and I’m looking forward to doing that, because that was the reason that I ran in the first place,” she said. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats and Irish Labour Party both appear cautious about the prospect of an alliance with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. They will no doubt be mindful of the experience of the Green Party, the junior partner in the last mandate. The Greens experienced near wipeout in the election, retaining only one of their 12 seats. Sinn Fein appears to currently have no realistic route to government, given Fianna Fail and Fine Gael’s ongoing refusal to share power with the party. Despite the odds being stacked against her party, Sinn Fein president Mary Lou McDonald contacted the leaders of the Social Democrats and Labour on Monday to discuss options. Earlier, Fianna Fail deputy leader and outgoing Finance Minister Jack Chambers predicted that a new coalition government would not be in place before Christmas. Mr Chambers said planned talks about forming an administration required “time and space” to ensure that any new government will be “coherent and stable”. After an inconclusive outcome to the 2020 election, it took five months for Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Greens to strike the last coalition deal. Mr Chambers said he did not believe it would take that long this time, as he noted the Covid-19 pandemic was a factor in 2020, but he also made clear it would not be a swift process. He said he agreed with analysis that there was no prospect of a deal before Christmas. “I don’t expect a government to be formed in mid-December, when the Dail is due to meet on December 18, probably a Ceann Comhairle (speaker) can be elected, and there’ll have to be time and space taken to make sure we can form a coherent, stable government,” he told RTE. “I don’t think it should take five months like it did the last time – Covid obviously complicated that. But I think all political parties need to take the time to see what’s possible and try and form a stable government for the Irish people.” Fine Gael minister of state Peter Burke said members of his parliamentary party would have to meet to consider their options before giving Mr Harris a mandate to negotiate a new programme for government with Fianna Fail. “It’s important that we have a strong, stable, viable government, whatever form that may be, to ensure that we can meet the challenges of our society, meet the challenges in terms of the economic changes that are potentially going to happen,” he told RTE. Despite being set to emerge with the most seats, it has not been all good news for Fianna Fail. The party’s outgoing Health Minister Stephen Donnelly became one of the biggest casualties of the election when he lost his seat in Wicklow in the early hours of Monday morning. Mr Donnelly was always predicted to face a fight in the constituency after boundary changes saw it reduced from five to four seats. If it is to be a reprise of the Fianna Fail/Fine Gael governing partnership of the last mandate, one of the major questions is around the position of taoiseach and whether the parties will once again take turns to hold the Irish premiership during the lifetime of the new government. The outcome in 2020 saw the parties enter a coalition on the basis that the holder of the premier position would be exchanged midway through the term. Fianna Fail leader Mr Martin took the role for the first half of the mandate, with Leo Varadkar taking over in December 2022. Current Fine Gael leader Mr Harris succeeded Mr Varadkar as taoiseach when he resigned from the role earlier this year. However, this time Fianna Fail has significantly increased its seat lead over Fine Gael, compared with the last election when there were only three seats between the parties. The size of the disparity in party numbers is likely to draw focus on the rotating taoiseach arrangement, raising questions as to whether it will be re-run in the next coalition and, if it is, on what terms. On Sunday, Simon Coveney, a former deputy leader of Fine Gael, said a coalition that did not repeat the rotating taoiseach arrangement in some fashion would be a “difficult proposition” for his party. Meanwhile, Fine Gael minister Paschal Donohoe said he would be making the case for Mr Harris to have another opportunity to serve as taoiseach. On Monday, Mr Chambers said while his party would expect to lead the government it would approach the issue of rotating the taoiseach’s role on the basis of “mutual respect” with Fine Gael. “I think the context of discussions and negotiations will be driven by mutual respect, and that’s the glue that will drive a programme for government and that’s the context in which we’ll engage,” he said. On Monday, Labour leader Ivana Bacik reiterated her party’s determination to forge an alliance with fellow centre-left parties with the intention of having a unified approach to the prospect of entering government. Asked if Labour was prepared to go into government with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael on its own, she told RTE: “No, not at this stage. We are absolutely not willing to do that. “We want to ensure there’s the largest number of TDs who share our vision and our values who want to deliver change on the same basis that we do.” The Social Democrats have been non-committal about any potential arrangement with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, and have restated a series of red lines they would need to achieve before considering taking a place in government. Leader Holly Cairns, who gave birth to a daughter on polling day on Friday, said in a statement: “The party is in a very strong position to play an important role in the next Dail. In what position, government or opposition, remains to be seen.” Fianna Fail secured the most first preference votes in Friday’s proportional representation election, taking 21.9% to Fine Gael’s 20.8%. Sinn Fein came in third on 19%. While Sinn Fein’s vote share represented a marked improvement on its disappointing showing in June’s local elections in Ireland, it is still significantly down on the 24.5% poll-topping share it secured in the 2020 general election. The final breakdown of first preferences also flipped the result of Friday night’s exit poll, which suggested Sinn Fein was in front on 21.1%, with Fine Gael on 21% and Fianna Fail on 19.5%.

Article content It was a special night for Ottawa’s housing industry Nov. 2 as excellence in design was celebrated at the annual Housing Design Awards in record fashion. Organized by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association, the awards gala, now in its 41 st year, is one of the largest events of its kind in the city. A record 760 guests gathered at the Rogers Centre Ottawa (formerly the Shaw Centre), which was decked out in a theme of urban graffiti, complete with on-site artists creating works for auction, break dancers, record spinners and an Airstream RV serving signature drinks. In all, there were 232 finalists (another record) from 369 entries (yet another record). “Not only did we have a record number of entries and companies participating, but the quality of entries continues to climb even further, with our members striving to raise the bar even more each year,” says Linda Oliveri Blanchard, who chairs the awards committee. Photo by Scott Norsworthy photograph Big winners Leading the pack was RND Construction, which took home seven trophies ranging from custom homes and kitchens to green innovation and one of the prestige categories — custom builder of the year, a category that RND has won repeatedly, including for the last three years in a row. “It’s always a thrill to win,” RND owner Roy Nandram said the morning after the gala. He then added: “We need to think about the people who help us win an award: our staff or subtrades; our architects and designers we work with; and, more importantly, we have amazing clients.” Amsted Design-Build won three awards, including being named renovator of the year for a record 11th time. A prime example of design infused with rich colour, the home was decorated with a palette of deep green, blue, burgundy and caramel. Collins won a fourth award for best home office and Minto also captured a fourth, for production builder of the year, a prestige award the builder last won in 2022. The final prestige category was the coveted All Things Home People’s Choice Award, the only trophy that is determined by public vote. This year’s award went to custom builder Modello Homes for a sophisticated modern farmhouse bungalow loft in an estate subdivision. PLOTNONPLOT Architecture teamed with Crossford Construction to win three awards of their own for one home, dubbed the Warren. The quirky yet sophisticated custom urban home took its cue from a rabbit’s lair, with the main living level partially embedded into the ground and boasting eye-catching round windows scattered throughout. Yet beneath this façade lies a society grappling with deep-rooted challenges. These issues, while subtle, reflect a troubling shift in the nation’s social and moral fabric. The Uganda of today reveals a worrying trend of self-interest over community wellbeing. The once-shared values of respect and collective responsibility seem to have faded, replaced by a mindset that prioritises personal gain above all else. This shift is particularly evident in everyday behaviours that reflect a lack of trust and regard for others. On the roads, for example, chaos reigns. Boda boda riders often weave recklessly through traffic, even onto pavements, showing little respect for pedestrians. Cars frequently break rules, driving against the flow of traffic to avoid congestion, creating dangerous conditions for everyone. These behaviours are not isolated; they symbolise a broader societal issue: the erosion of discipline and consideration. Adding to this decline is the flood of counterfeit goods in the market. From medicines to food products, the sheer volume of fake items poses a grave danger to public health and safety. Many unsuspecting consumers are left vulnerable, unable to distinguish between genuine and substandard products. This culture of deceit fuels mistrust and exploits the very people who should be protected. Another insidious issue is the rise of professional and intellectual vandalism. It is not uncommon for individuals to steal ideas and proposals from others, passing them off as their own to secure contracts or funding. This selfish practice not only undermines trust but also affects development, as many of these impostors fail to deliver on their promises. Consequently, innovative thinkers fear sharing their knowledge, wary that their efforts will be exploited for personal gain without credit or accountability. This stifling of creativity and collaboration is a direct blow to progress and social cohesion. The underlying cause of these actions is not just recklessness; it is a growing sense of disconnection. People no longer see themselves as part of a shared community. Trust among individuals has diminished to the point where everyone is viewed with suspicion, and the prevailing question seems to be, What’s in it for me? This attitude transcends age, with both adults and children alike mirroring this self-serving outlook. The rise of mob justice further reflects this decline in social cohesion. Groups taking the law into their own hands may be driven by frustration with an inefficient justice system, but it is a dangerous trend that undermines the rule of law and breeds further disorder. Similarly, incidents of avoidable tragedies, like people rushing towards overturned oil trucks in search of fuel, only to suffer fatal consequences, reflect a lack of awareness and value for life. The cumulative effect of these behaviours paints a troubling picture. Uganda, once a beacon of potential, now seems to struggle under the weight of moral decay and a lack of shared purpose. The dreams of unity and progress that inspired generations are giving way to cynicism and disillusionment. But all is not lost. There remains an opportunity to reclaim the values that once held society together. The East African Revival offers a timeless message of reconciliation, humility, and collective responsibility, principles that are desperately needed today. Rooted in these ideals, Uganda has a chance to rebuild trust and restore a sense of community. We can draw inspiration from neighbouring countries like Rwanda and South Africa, where the philosophy of obuntu, emphasising empathy and shared humanity, has played a key role in healing and uniting fractured societies. Uganda does not need to wait for conflict to embrace these principles. By fostering a culture of accountability, prioritising the common good, and rekindling mutual respect, the nation can address its current challenges before they escalate further. The way forward lies in a moral and social revival, one that places community above individualism and emphasises shared progress over personal enrichment. It is a call to action for all Ugandans to remember their collective identity and work together to rebuild the foundations of trust and unity. With this spirit, Uganda can once again shine as a symbol of hope and resilience for the continent. *****
