No fewer than 519 students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, have emerged as first-class graduates among the 6,405 students set to graduate from the institution. Adenike Oladiji, vice chancellor of the University, who disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing to herald the combined 34 and 35 convocation ceremonies of the institution, therefore, said out of the total number, 3408 have second class (upper division), 2139 have second class (lower division, while 339 have third class. According to her, the university would also confer postgraduate diploma, masters and doctoral degrees on 960 postgraduate students. For the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions, Oladiji, announced three students of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faromika Ifeoluwa Faith with a cumulative grade point average of 4.96, Vitowanu Johnbull Aanuoluwapo (IPE/17/3299) with a cumulative grade point average of 4.96 and Ajakaye Oluwasegun Joshua (MME/18/7019) with a cumulative grade point average of 4.95. “There are currently 59 academic programmes in the university and none has been denied accreditation. The university continues to reassess her academic programmes for global relevance and competitiveness. “As a university of technology, we have contributed significantly to the development of our immediate community and the global environment is various ways. “Enhancement of food security through production of tomatoes and bell pepper on our farm, production of variety of loaves, including low sugar bread for diabetics and weight-watchers. Our students are being equipped with entrepreneurial skills to solve local challenges,” Oladiji said. The vice chancellor, who also spoke on the highlights of the convocation ceremonies, said Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo would be delivering the convocation lecture with the title; “Technological Innovation: A panacea to food insecurity.” “Our honorary degree awardees are; Prof. Daniel Olukoya, the founder of the MFM as Doctor of Management Science, Mr. Ayorinde Ogunruku, and Mr. Joel Ogunsola. Apart from their impressive contributions to humanity, they have also identified with FUTA’s great ideals and vision such that the entire university community can continue to identify with their legacies. “I have no doubt that we have every cause to look forward to a brighter and more inspiring second half of my vice-chancellorship. Now, after two trips around the 17-turn, 3.8-mile course on the Las Vegas Strip, Verstappen has made far better memories in the city. The 27-year-old won his fourth consecutive F1 world title at Saturday night’s Las Vegas Grand Prix. He finished fifth in the race, but claimed enough points to solidify the championship with two events remaining. Verstappen also won the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023. “It was a very challenging season, and as a person at times it was very challenging,” Verstappen said. “This season taught me a lot of lessons that I’m very proud of how we handled it. In a way, that makes it very special.” Mercedes driver George Russell dominated the race from pole position, leading every lap in an easy victory. Here are three takeaways from the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix: 1. Verstappen’s title season not as dominant Verstappen won his first championship after a thrilling battle with Hamilton in 2021. He then waltzed to titles in 2022 and 2023 with dominant efforts. This year wasn’t as easy for Verstappen. He appeared to be cruising to a championship early in the season after winning seven of the first 10 races. But then he had a tough summer. Verstappen went 10 races without a win, which allowed McLaren’s Lando Norris to pull close in the standings . Russell was hardly challenged during his second victory of the season. Hamilton, after qualifying 10th on Friday, charged his way into second place. “I’m over the moon. What a weekend and totally unexpected, which makes it even sweeter,” Russell said. “It’s been a real surprise seeing how strong our pace has been and securing the pole. ... It was just a case of managing my pace, managing in the right corners and bringing it home.” The race marked the first time Mercedes finished first and second since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix. It was a much-needed run for Hamilton, who placed 10th his last race in Brazil on Nov. 3. He will drive for Ferrari next season after a 12-year run with Mercedes that included six championships. “A great performance. It’s not that I didn’t think I could do it,” Hamilton said. “I’ve had many races like this, but I’m generally happy to have had the recovery. ... That was honestly one of the most enjoyable races.” 3. Constructors title battle Verstappen secured the drivers championship Saturday, but the fight for the constructors (team) title is still up in the air. Second-place Ferrari cut into its deficit after Sainz finished third and Charles Leclerc placed fourth. The team has 584 points, 24 behind first-place McLaren (608) with two races to go. Norris finished sixth Saturday and his teammate Oscar Piastri was seventh. “We just need to go into (the last two races) trying to maximize whatever we have,” Sainz said. “I think over the last few weekends we’ve done a good job. ... That’s why it was important for us to get (the) maximum number of points available, and we kind of did that for the pace that we had.” This year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix was a much better weekend for Sainz, who crashed after he ran over a manhole cover in the opening practice session last year. “I was hoping that (Las Vegas) had something to offer me after what happened last year. America's richest black person is a tech entrepreneur worth $11.4 billion(ANNews) – When respected Fort McMurray-based Métis entrepreneur and artist Lisa Marie Bourque unexpectedly died in an April vehicle collision, Alberta’s chief medical examiner originally categorized it as a suicide. But after Bourque’s family requested a fatality inquiry, the examiner changed the manner of death to accidental—a move the family’s lawyer said is unprecedented in his experience. “I have not seen this type of amendment by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner before in my years in legal practice and so this in my opinion is an extraordinary outcome to our request for a fatality inquiry into the circumstances of Lisa’s passing,” lawyer Alex Yiu wrote in an email to Bourque’s common law spouse, Manferd Bishop, who provided it to Alberta Native News. Bourque died on April 27 after she crashed into a water truck that was parked on Highway 69, with the immediate cause of death listed in the coroner’s report as “blunt chest injuries.” She was 47. As the founder of the Fort McMurray Métis Trading Post and the New Dawn Métis Women’s representative for Region 1 of the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA), Bourque was a high-profile member of the Métis community in Alberta and a regular fixture at cultural events in the region. “You talk to anybody from Fort Chip, McMurray, Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Lac La Biche, everybody knows her. There isn’t one person who thought she committed suicide,” said Bishop, who owns a towing company in Fort Mac. When Bourque died, the MNA issued a statement on Facebook calling Bourque “a beacon of light, tirelessly advocating for Indigenous rights and sharing her beautiful culture with unwavering pride.” “Her absence leaves a void that will be felt deeply at every gathering, every event, every moment where her infectious smile and boundless energy once filled the room,” the statement added. In a separate statement, McMurray Métis Local 1935 described Bourque as a “a champion for sharing her culture and advocating for the rights of all Indigenous people.” “She was at many events, whether it was to celebrate or advocate. Always beaming with pride for her culture, often seen standing and clapping at the back of the room while kids jigged, or models showcased Indigenous fashions,” read the statement. “Her absence will be felt at every artisan market, as her smile from ear to ear won’t be there to welcome us in.” Nancy Critchley, a close friend of Bourque’s who met her when they were both vendors at Treaty Days in Fort McKay several years ago, told Alberta Native News that Bourque “would have never taken her own life.” “There’s no way, not one speck of cell in my body, that believes that she committed suicide,” said Critchley, who is supporting Bourque’s family in their efforts to get answers about her death. Bishop noted that the medical officer’s finding of suicide had a practical impact on his family, precluding him from filing an insurance claim to help pay for her funeral, since the accident was deemed to be Bourque’s own fault. Critchley, who like Bourque is Métis, said she suspects the suicide designation was an effort to conceal how state negligence caused the death of an Indigenous woman. The only reason the medical examiner changed the manner of death, she added, was because Bourque’s family asked for a fatality inquiry, which she described as “covering up a cover up.” Bishop, who isn’t Indigenous, doesn’t think the suicide designation was an attempt to cover anything up, but the result of the limited information the RCMP provided to the medical examiner. The original medical examiner’s report, which Bishop provided to Alberta Native News, cited Bourque’s “major depression” and anxiety, the presence of antidepressants in her system, clear road conditions the day of her accident and a lack of brake marks on the road as reasons her “manner of death is best classified as suicide.” The autopsy report, citing multiple eyewitnesses, noted that Bourque “veered from her lane into the lane with the parked truck, and made no attempt to swerve away or slow down.” Conceding that Bourque struggled with anxiety, Critchley questioned the medical examiner’s conclusion that Bourque was severely depressed to the extent that she would deliberately crash her car. “I know a lot of people who are majorly depressed,” said Critchley. “My friend Lisa was not majorly depressed.” On Nov. 14, lawyer Yiu sent a letter to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) requesting a fatality inquiry into Bourque’s death, which often takes years to conclude, on Bishop’s behalf. In a Dec. 2 response to Yiu, chief medical examiner Dr. Akmal Coetzee-Khan said he conducted a “complete review of our office’s investigation” into Bourque’s death, adding that he’s received “several letters ... from friends and community members” echoing Yiu’s request. Upon reviewing the investigation into Bourque’s death with Dr. Daniel Smyk, who wrote the original medical examiner’s report, the physicians concluded “that based on the balance of probabilities, the death occurred accidentally,” Coetzee-Khan wrote to Yiu. An amended medical examiner’s report now notes that since completing its initial investigation, the OCME “received additional collateral information and background social history regarding Ms. Bourque which prompted a review of the findings and conclusions.” “There are still some aspects of the collision that are unclear, but given the new information, the manner of death has been amended to accidental,” Smyk wrote. While the original autopsy report said that Bourque “made no attempt to swerve away or slow down,” the amended version, citing an RCMP Technical Collision Investigation Report, noted that Bourque did move her foot from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal, but by the time she did it was too late. Bishop noted that there were no traffic cones surrounding the stationary water truck, which would have provided an advance warning to Bourque to slow down. He added that police told him that there’s no legal requirement for there to be traffic cones or signage to protect drivers. Section 194 of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Code requires the use of “lane control devices” if workers are put in danger of highway traffic. It doesn’t deal with risks to drivers. “I’ve towed for just under 50 years, I’ve been in McMurray just about 52 years now,” said Bishop. “The laws have to change.”

(AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield embarrassed the woeful Giants with his arm and legs, and if that wasn’t enough, he rubbed it in by mimicking New York fan favorite Tommy DeVito’s celebratory dance after scoring a touchdown. Mayfield catapulted into the end zone on a spectacular 10-yard scramble for one of Tampa Bay’s four rushing TDs, and the Buccaneers beat the Giants and new starting quarterback DeVito 30-7 on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak and extending New York’s skid to six. With both teams struggling and coming off byes, most of the focus leading up to the game was on the Giants’ decisions this week to bench and then release quarterback Daniel Jones. The brash DeVito was given the starting job and asked to spark coach Brian Daboll’s team, as he did last season. Instead, Mayfield provided the energy with his play and his trolling of DeVito. “Tribute to Tommy,” said a straight-faced Mayfield, who was 24 of 30 for 294 yards. “He’s a good dude, that’s why. Most of the times, I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s spontaneous.” Mayfield was asked several times about the gesture and admitted he wanted to give Giants fans something they liked, adding he met DeVito at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in February. “He had his chain blinged out, swag walking through the casino.
