Up to 15 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in the nation's capital from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning. It's the kind of weather that many drivers despise, but for winter sports enthusiasts, it can't come soon enough. "I'm super excited. It's going to be great. I'm really looking forward to it," said Paul Rowland, who is preparing for his first ski season in about 25 years. "I didn't get to go out last year because, of course the snow sucked. So, we're hoping this year is a better snow season." Rowland spoke to CTV News while being fitted for a new pair of ski boots at Kunstadt Sports in the Glebe. He's just one of the many customers gearing up and preparing for the ski season ahead in what is the busiest time of year for the locally owned shop. "It's really busy, which is awesome. It's a lot of fun for us here. We're all skiers and snowboarders ourselves, so, it's fun to share in the excitement that everybody has," said store manager Mitch Craig. "People buy skis, and they may have them for ten years, but every year they need one or two different tune-ups. So, we have a lot of demands for service." It's been a slow start to the season at some nearby ski hills including the Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, which was forced to push back its opening day , and cancel the PwC Tremblant World Cu p. But at Camp Fortune, 36 snow guns and crews are hard at work to ensure the hill can open on schedule. Opening day is set for Friday. Camp Fortune Assistant General Manager Erin Boucher says climate change means ski resorts need to adapt and invest in new technology. "We have three groomers out ready to push the snow around because this will be challenging snow to work with," said Boucher. "It's going to be heavy; it's not going to be light and fluffy, but once the machines work it, it will be an enjoyable ski experience." New at Camp Fortune this year is a TechnoAlpin fan gun, which carries a price tag of $65,000 and can produce 35 gallons of snow per minute. That's more than double the output of its smaller counterparts at the ski resort. It can also create snow in warmer temperatures, up to -2 C. Boucher says taking advantage of improved snow-making technology is crucial for the long-term sustainability in eastern Canada. "Ski resorts invest quite heavily in the equipment to make winter happen. So, as long as it's cold, we can make winter happen," she said. "There are a lot of questions about climate change and how we are adapting, but science is science, and we still need freezing temperatures to make snow, but the machines are improving, and you can now make snow at a slightly warmer temperature compared to before." Regardless of how the snow is made, skiers say they just can't wait to get out on the slopes. "I'm super excited. I've been looking forward to it since last year," said Craig. HOUSTON (AP) — An elaborate parody appears to be behind an effort to resurrect Enron, the Houston-based energy company that exemplified the worst in American corporate fraud and greed after it went bankrupt in 2001. If its return is comedic, some former employees who lost everything in Enron’s collapse aren’t laughing. “It’s a pretty sick joke and it disparages the people that did work there. And why would you want to even bring it back up again?” said former Enron employee Diana Peters, who represented workers in the company’s bankruptcy proceedings. Here’s what to know about the history of Enron and the purported effort to bring it back. Once the nation’s seventh-largest company, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection on Dec. 2, 2001, after years of accounting tricks could no longer hide billions of dollars in debt or make failing ventures appear profitable. The energy company's collapse put more than 5,000 people out of work, wiped out more than $2 billion in employee pensions and rendered $60 billion in Enron stock worthless. Its aftershocks were felt throughout the energy sector. Twenty-four Enron executives , including former CEO Jeffrey Skilling , were eventually convicted for their roles in the fraud. Enron founder Ken Lay’s convictions were vacated after he died of heart disease following his 2006 trial. On Monday — the 23rd anniversary of the bankruptcy filing — a company representing itself as Enron announced in a news release that it was relaunching as a “company dedicated to solving the global energy crisis.” It also posted a video on social media, advertised on at least one Houston billboard and a took out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle In the minute-long video that was full of generic corporate jargon, the company talks about “growth” and “rebirth.” It ends with the words, “We’re back. In an email, company spokesperson Will Chabot said the new Enron was not doing any interviews yet, but that "We’ll have more to share soon.” Signs point to the comeback being a joke. In the “terms of use and conditions of sale” on the company's website, it says “the information on the website about Enron is First Amendment protected parody, represents performance art, and is for entertainment purposes only.” Documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that College Company, an Arkansas-based LLC, owns the Enron trademark. The co-founder of College Company is Connor Gaydos, who helped create a joke conspiracy theory that claims all birds are actually surveillance drones for the government. Peters said that since learning about the “relaunch” of Enron, she has spoken with several other former employees and they are also upset by it. She said the apparent stunt was “in poor taste.” “If it’s a joke, it’s rude, extremely rude. And I hope that they realize it and apologize to all of the Enron employees,” Peters said. Peters, who is 74 years old, said she is still working in information technology because “I lost everything in Enron, and so my Social Security doesn’t always take care of things I need done.” “Enron’s downfall taught us critical lessons about corporate ethics, accountability, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Discussion of Non-GAAP Financial Measures Non-GAAP financial measures exclude the effect of stock-based compensation expense, amortization of acquired intangible assets, acquisition and divestiture-related costs, restructuring and other related charges (including, but not limited to, asset impairment charges, recognition of future contractual obligations, employee severance costs, and facilities related charges), resolution of legal matters, and certain expenses and benefits that are driven primarily by discrete events that management does not consider to be directly related to Marvell's core business. The region is a landlocked country which has a small portion of its territory in Eastern Europe. Kazakhstan borders China to the east, Russia to the north and west, Kyrgyzstan to the southeast, Uzbekistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest, and has a coastline along the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan has the largest economy in Central Asia which is owed to the country’s immense natural resources - and is actually the largest landlocked country in the world. The country is famed for its natural beauty including a number of nature reserves. Kazakhstan’s high mountains, including the Altai Mountains and the Tien Shan, attract many mountaineers and climbers. In fact, the region’s snowy peaks have even labelled Kazakhstan as being a budget-friendly alternative to the Swiss Alps. The population in Kazakhstan is low and could be set to decrease even further, as its total fertility rate (TFR) plummets due to several reasons. Kazakhstan’s TFR decreased after the country gained its independence and has been linked to several aspects of social change in the country during its transition from a Soviet republic to an independent post-socialist state. On October 25, 1990, the country declared its sovereignty on its territory as a republic within the Soviet Union. This led to great economic problems causing its TFR to fall below replacement level. According to one study published in Springer , the sustained and universal fertility recuperation in Kazakhstan was further analysed. According to the research, the TFR of Kazakhstan has been on a roller coaster and has dropped from 2.84 in 1989 to 1.80 in 1999 and then rebounded back to 3.00 in 2018. They also noted how the country’s “industries disappeared, inflation skyrocketed, and unemployment and wage arrears were widespread” owing to this birth rate decline. “In addition, many institutional features such as childcare provision, maternity leave, and other forms of social benefits were significantly reduced during the 1990”, they added. NoneNagpur: An audit report tabled during the winter session of the state legislature revealed several financial and operational mismanagement within the Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) in the financial year 2022-23, raising concerns over accountability and governance. The report, prepared by Rodi Dabir & Co, a chartered accountants firm, revealed that while VIDC completed several irrigation and hydroelectric projects, their capital expenditure continues to be recorded under ‘Work in progress' instead of being transferred to completed assets. This misclassification persists due to delays in obtaining clearances from the technical department, thereby distorting VIDC's financial records. One of the major lapses noted during the audit was the failure to charge depreciation on fixed assets, resulting in their overstatement. Despite claiming depreciation benefits in income tax filings, the corporation did not apply the rates prescribed under the Income Tax Act, 1961, in its financial statements, showcasing non-compliance with standard accounting practices, the report underlined. Significant gaps in financial management were highlighted, such as stock valuation being solely certified by executive engineers without third-party verification. Additionally, most of VIDC's assets remain uninsured, leaving them exposed to significant financial risks. The auditors also pointed out weaknesses in internal checks and oversight mechanisms, calling for urgent reforms in governance practices. Another major concern raised by the audit firm was the unresolved balances under accounts like Miscellaneous Public Works Advances (MPWA) and Purchase Settlement Suspense Accounts. These accounts include advances and creditors from previous years, but there was no effort to classify or settle these long-standing liabilities. Furthermore, the corporation continues to use the cash method of accounting, which excludes major payables and receivables, limiting the transparency of its financial statements, the report noted. The audit also flagged the ambiguous handling of water revenue. Following a 2016 govt resolution, revenue from maintenance divisions is retained by VIDC for operational expenses, while revenue from non-maintenance divisions is vaguely listed under "Current Liabilities," reflecting poor financial categorisation. The report additionally noted that re-conveyance deeds to free mortgaged assets linked to fully redeemed VIDC Bonds remain incomplete, particularly with the Bank of India. Contingent liabilities, another critical aspect, have not been quantified and remain absent as footnotes in the financial statements, the report stated. These findings have intensified calls for reforms in VIDC's operational and financial practices. I love iced coffee, but I loathe cold coffee. Intentionally iced coffee is perfection, while hot coffee that's gone cold is disgusting. You can, of course, microwave coffee to return it to a drinkable temperature, and I have—many times. My one gripe is with how it handles the last sip or two of your beverage. It seems the heating element is so strong, it burns, or at least alters the taste of, any too-small amount of liquid. My advice is to finish the cup before it gets to this point, keep your temperature set lower, or turn off the heater via the app when you get about three-quarters of the way through it.
