NEW YORK (AP) — In an angry outburst in a New York courtroom, Rudy Giuliani accused a judge Tuesday of making wrong assumptions about him as he tries to comply with an order requiring him to turn over most of his assets to two election poll workers who won a libel case against him. U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman responded by saying he’s not going to let the former New York City mayor and onetime presidential candidate blurt things out anymore in court unless he’s a sworn witness. The interruption to an otherwise routine pretrial hearing in Manhattan came as the judge questioned Giuliani's lawyer about why Giuliani has not yet provided the title to a car he has relinquished in his effort to satisfy a $148 million defamation judgment won by two former Georgia election workers. “Your client was the U.S. attorney for this district,” the judge said, referring to Giuliani's years in the 1980s as the head of the federal prosecutor's office in the Southern District of New York, as he suggested it was hard to believe that Giuliani was incapable of getting a duplicate title to the car. Giuliani learned forward and began speaking into a microphone, telling the judge he had applied for a duplicate copy of the car's title but that it had not yet arrived. “The implication I’ve been not diligent about it is totally incorrect,” Giuliani said in a scolding tone. “The implication you make is against me and every implication against me is wrong.” Giuliani went on: "I’m not impoverished. Everything I have is tied up. I don’t have a car. I don’t have a credit card. I don’t have cash. I can’t get to bank accounts that truly would be mine because they have put ... stop orders on, for example, my Social Security account, which they have no right to do.” Liman responded by warning defense lawyers that the next time Giuliani interrupts a hearing, “he's not going to be permitted to speak and the court will take action.” The judge said Giuliani could either choose to represent himself or let lawyers do so, but “you can't have hybrid representation.” If Giuliani wants to speak in court again, he can be put on the witness stand and be sworn as a witness, Liman added. The exchange came at a hearing in which the judge refused to delay a Jan. 16 trial over the disposition of Giuliani’s Florida residence and World Series rings. Those are two sets of assets that Giuliani is trying to shield from confiscation as part of Liman's order to turn over many prized possessions to the poll workers. Earlier in the proceeding, defense attorney Joseph M. Cammarata asked Liman to delay the trial, which will be heard without a jury, for a month because of Giuliani's “involvement" in inauguration planning for President-elect Donald Trump. “My client regularly consults and deals directly with President-elect Trump on issues that are taking place as the incoming administration is afoot as well as (the) inauguration," Cammarata said. "My client wants to exercise his political right to be there.” The judge turned down the request, saying Giuliani's “social calendar” was not a reason to postpone the trial. “Exactly one week before Christmas we are surrounded by boxes with no to go to,” says Ana*, a mother of two from Sheffield. The 51-year-old has been served a , which runs out on 28 December. This means she and her husband are , preparing to leave their family home with no idea what the future holds. “Obviously our first concern is for the children,” she says. “They need stability, especially at Christmas. We want them to have a lovely, peaceful, calm time at home. “We’re having to put on a brave face. But we’re not eating, not sleeping.” Because she has been served the Section 21 notice, Ana’s landlord doesn’t need to give a reason for evicting her and her family. Despite living in the property for four years, a letter through the post was how they found out they had just two months to find a new place to live. “He said he wants to sell the property,” Ana says. “We have appealed to him, to his better nature, to ask him to reconsider or ask for more time. “Laughably, he said we’re impinging upon his rights to ask that. And we’ve had no more contact from him.” The use of these Section 21 notices has long attracted controversy, criticised by campaign groups and politicians alike. Labour has now begun implementing legislation to ban their use, delivering on a manifesto commitment and finally meeting a promise made by the Conservatives over five years ago, in April 2019. The ‘Renter’s Rights Bill’ – spearheaded by deputy prime minister Angela Rayner – will bring in this change, alongside a slate of other measures to bolster protections for private tenants in other ways. But it will come too late for Ana and her family, along with many others. Currently in its report stage, the bill won’t become law until around mid-2025. In the meantime, the use of Section 21 notices remains rife, and has even increased in recent months. During Labour’s first three months in power, between July and September this year, 8,425 households were served a Section 21 notice – an eight-year high. In the same period, there were 2,830 bailiff evictions from households served with Section 21 notices. This represents a 23 per cent increase from the same period in 2023, when there were 2,308 evictions of this kind. Rachel, 35, is a mother of three from County Durham. After being issued a Section 21 notice by her landlord in October, her notice period ended on 20 December. “The first I knew of it was the Section 21 come through the door,” she says, “And since then I haven’t been able to communicate with my landlord.” Rachel and her family lived in the property for 13 and a half years. Her three children, who are aged 17, seven and three, have grown up in the house, and go to school in the area. “I actually live in the same village as all of my family. I’ve grown up here as well,” Rachel explains. “It’s the same village that my great-grandparents grew up in.” But finding another suitable property in the area is proving a challenge. mean Rachel is looking to her local council to help secure social housing, but the ever-increasing waiting list for these properties makes it very hard to secure one. “The rents are so high now that, even in an area I don’t want to live in, they’re half of my total income, and that’s without a single bill,” she says. “You’re just at the mercy of [the council]. Despite having three dependent children, and so deemed to be a priority need, her council has told Rachel they will only step in after she is evicted by bailiffs. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas military leader, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The announcement came as health officials in the Gaza Strip said the death toll from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000. The warrant marked the first time that a sitting leader of a major Western ally has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity by a global court of justice. The ICC panel said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both Netanyahu and his ex-defense minister bear responsibility for the war crime of starvation and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. Israel’s war has caused heavy destruction across Gaza, decimated parts of the territory and driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million people from their homes, leaving most dependent on aid to survive. Israel launched its war in Gaza after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250 . Last week, one driver was shot in the head and hospitalized along with another truck driver, Hadi said. The Gaza humanitarian coordinator said bakeries are closing because of lack of flour or fuel to operate generators. “Palestinian civilians are struggling to survive under unlivable conditions, amid relentless hostilities,” Hadi said. JERUSALEM — Israeli prosecutors have charged a former aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with leaking classified documents to international media, apparently to protect the Israeli leader from criticism as a hostage deal was collapsing. Eli Feldstein, a former media adviser to Netanyahu, was charged Thursday with leaking classified information with the intent of harming state security and obstruction of justice. The leaked documents are said to have formed the basis of a widely discredited article in the London-based Jewish Chronicle — which was later withdrawn — suggesting Hamas planned to spirit hostages out of Gaza through Egypt, and an article in Germany’s Bild newspaper that said Hamas was drawing out the hostage talks as a form of psychological warfare on Israel. Critics say the leaks were aimed at giving Netanyahu political cover as the case-fire talks ground to a halt. Some have accused Netanyahu of resisting a deal in to preserve his governing coalition, which includes hard-line members who have threatened to bring down the government if he makes concessions to Hamas. The leaks came at a time of public uproar over the deaths of six hostages who were killed by their Hamas captors as Israeli soldiers were closing in. The indictment said the leaks were meant “to create media influence on the public discourse in Israel in regards to the handling of the hostage situation, after the news of the murder of six hostages.” The indictment identified two other Netanyahu aides as being connected to the scheme, but only Feldstein and an unidentified reservist in Israeli military intelligence were charged. Netanyahu, who denies the accusations, has not been identified as a suspect in the burgeoning investigation. Israeli media say if convicted, Feldstein could potentially face life in prison. JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the death of a 70-year-old Israeli man who entered Lebanon with Israeli forces and was killed in a Hezbollah ambush. Investigators are trying to determine, among other things, who allowed Zeev Erlich into the combat zone with the forces and why he was permitted to enter. According to Israeli media reports, Erlich was not on active duty when he was shot, but was wearing a military uniform and had a weapon. The army said he was a reservist with the rank of major and identified him as a “fallen soldier” when it announced his death. Erlich was a well-known West Bank settler and researcher of Jewish history. Media reports said Erlich was permitted to enter Lebanon to explore a local archaeological site. The army said a 20-year-old soldier was killed in the same incident, while an officer was badly wounded. The army announced Thursday that the chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, has appointed a team of experts “to examine and strengthen operational discipline and military culture” following the incident. It said its commander for northern Israel, Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, would launch a separate “command inquiry,” while Israeli military police conduct a separate probe. Such investigations can lead to criminal charges. BEIRUT — At least 29 people were killed Thursday in Israeli strikes on different towns and villages across Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state-run media. In eastern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed 26 people in six different towns in Baalbek province, the health ministry and the National News Agency said. In Tyre province, southern Lebanon, three people were killed in an Israeli strike, the health ministry said. The health ministry Wednesday said that over 3,550 people have been killed in the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel, the majority following Israel’s escalation in late September. The European Union's foreign policy chief has underlined that the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas officials are a legal and not political matter, and that they are binding on all 27 EU member countries and other signatories to the ICC to implement. “The tragedy in Gaza has to stop," Josep Borrell told reporters during a visit to Jordan. “It is not a political decision. It is the decision of an international court of justice, and the decision of the court has to be respected, and implemented.” “This decision is a binding decision on all state parties of the court, which include all members of the European Union," he added. The shortages appear to have been linked to the looting of nearly 100 truckloads of aid by armed men in southern Gaza last weekend. Associated Press footage showed a crowd of hundreds pushing and shouting outside a bakery in the central city of Deir al-Balah on Thursday. The day before the reopening, the price of a bag of 15 loaves of pita bread had climbed above $13. “In my house, there is not a morsel of bread, and the children are hungry,” said Sultan Abu Sultan, who was displaced from northern Gaza during the war. The amount of aid entering Gaza plunged in October as Israel launched a major offensive in the isolated north, where experts say famine may be underway . Hunger is widespread across the territory, even in central Gaza where aid groups have more access. Humanitarian organizations say Israeli restrictions, ongoing fighting and the breakdown of law and order make it difficult to deliver assistance. President Nikos Christodoulides said the 27-member bloc needs to establish closer ties with countries that bolster regional stability like Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf states. “The conflict in the Middle East is taking place on the EU’s doorstep, in an area of vital interest to the bloc’s interests, where any escalation or regional spillover will have significant consequences on its security and stability,” Christodoulides told an Economist conference in the Cypriot capital. Christodoulides said EU member Cyprus for years has tried to get this message across to Brussels. The decision turns Netanyahu and the others into internationally wanted suspects and is likely to further isolate them and complicate efforts to negotiate a cease-fire to end the 13-month conflict. But its practical implications could be limited since Israel and its major ally, the United States, are not members of the court and several of the Hamas officials have been subsequently killed in the conflict. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have previously condemned ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s request for the warrants as disgraceful and antisemitic. The death toll in the Gaza Strip from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000, local health officials said Thursday. The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said that more than half of the fatalities are women and children. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The Health Ministry said 44,056 people have been killed and 104,268 wounded since the start of the war. It has said the real toll is higher because thousands of bodies are buried under rubble or in areas that medics cannot access. Jamaica has been selected to be the pilot for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Just Transition Project, aimed at highlighting the impacts of climate change on workers, and strategies to protect and empower them. The Jamaica Just Transition Project will be launched on November 27, during the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s (MLSS) Regional Labour Talk Roadshow, at the Holiday Haven Condo Resort, in St. Ann. Director of the ILO, Decent Work Caribbean Team, Dr. Joni Musabayana, told a JIS Think Tank, today (November 26), that the Project highlights the significant impact climate crises have on workers and the urgent need for inclusive strategies that protect and empower all categories of workers, as the world transitions to a green economy. “Our mandate is the labour market, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that climate change poses profound challenges not just to the environment, but to the livelihoods of workers across the region. We aim to explore how the effects of climate change—like hurricanes—disrupt both homes and workplaces, and how we can work together to mitigate these impacts,” the Director said. He pointed out that the project will focus on three key areas. Firstly, collaborating with national policymakers to embed climate considerations within labour market policies, and to look at comprehensive strategies that address both climate change and its effects on the world of work. Secondly, the project will facilitate discussions to identify pathways for transitioning to a green economy without leaving any worker behind; and thirdly, to assess and propose social protection measures that can be implemented to minimise the adverse effects of climate change on vulnerable worker categories, ensuring their resilience in times of crisis. Likewise, three-time WNBA MVP A’Ja Wilson attributed Clark’s popularity to skin color. “It doesn’t matter what we all do as black women, we’re still going to be swept underneath the rug,” Wilson compained. “That’s why it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race, because it is.” In some ways, of course, all of these young women qualify as victims of . They have heard that kind of nonsense so often in schools and popular culture that they repeat it uncritically. Does Fagbenle really believe that nothing has changed in America since 1960, let alone the nation’s inception? And does Wilson really believe that she has the power to read others’ hearts with such clarity that the mere denial of race-based motives actually causes her blood to boil? In the days of segregation, many white men did hold positions of authority that they did not earn or deserve. And they held those positions because of sex and skin color. Americans eventually recognized that as wrong. It was equally wrong, however, when Vice President , despite her myriad as a thinker and speaker, was chosen as President Joe Biden’s running mate she is ( ) a black woman, and it was equally wrong when Justice , despite her and near-total ignorance of the Constitution, was chosen for the Supreme Court she is a black woman. Those things happened, too. Far from sweeping black women “underneath the rug,” Americans have elevated some unworthy individuals solely on account of sex and skin color, just as they once did with white men. Wilson’s “swept underneath the rug” comment, therefore, reflected not only a lie, but the opposite of truth. And Clark endorsed that lie — uncritically, mechanically, as if programmed to do so. Kelly, of course, had it right. She did not, however, tell the whole story. President-elect victory in the 2024 election felt like the end of this nonsense. It signaled that the majority of Americans have had enough and now refuse to play the woke racists’ game. Thus, Clark’s “self-flagellation” seemed to belong more to the oppressive atmosphere of 2020, as if Clark either teleported here from the dark recent past or simply ignored the memo that we are not doing this anymore.
