kijiji dogs Former Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett is officially receiving his first start of the season. With Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts ruled out with a concussion , suffered against the Commanders last weekend, Pickett is stepping into the starting spot for the Eagles this weekend against the Cowboys. Pickett received his first extended action of the season last weekend against the Commanders, playing most of the game in a loss. He completed 14-of-24 pass attempts for 143 yards with a touchdown and interception, adding 13 yards on the ground, in relief. He wasn’t perfect, but he also wasn’t helped by his playmakers either. Wideout DeVonta Smith dropped a pass over the middle field just before the two-minute warning, which allowed the Commanders a chance to come back and win the game, 36-33. Now official: Eagles ruled out QB Jalen Hurts for Sunday’s game vs. Dallas due to his concussion. Eagles QB Kenny Pickett now will replace Hurts. pic.twitter.com/I4RcuVzzZo — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) December 27, 2024 It was a gutsy effort by Pickett, who said he was good to go earlier this week after dealing with a rib injury against the Commanders. He has a chance to show that he’s continued to grow since arriving in Philadelphia in March. The Steelers traded Pickett to the Eagles on March 16, after spending two seasons with the team. And even through a disappointing tenure with the Steelers, Pickett reflected positively on his time in Pittsburgh. “(I) gave everything I had there and loved all of my teammates and coaches that I came across — some absolutely great memories that I’ll take forever and lifelong friendships,” Pickett said following the trade. “And just talking to guys after it all went down, grateful that we had the time we had together.” Pickett was one of the best quarterbacks in college football in 2021, completing 334-of-497 pass attempts (67%) for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns and seven interceptions — adding 241 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground. He finished his Pitt career as the all-time leader in passing yards, completions, total offense, touchdowns responsible for and passing touchdowns. He’s thrown the most 300-yard passing games (16) and 400-yard passing games (five) and his 32 wins are the most as a Pitt starter. Pickett completed 1,045-of-1,674 career passing attempts (just over 62%) for 12,303 yards and 81 touchdowns, to just 32 interceptions, in 52 career appearances (49 starts). He also added 809 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. He led Pitt to its first ACC title in 2021, earning All-ACC, All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist honors. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. Kenny Pickett threw for 4,474 yards (62.6% completion) with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his 25 games as a Steeler, and while he wasn’t put in the best situation to succeed in the NFL, his lack of production was problematic. The Steelers brought signed Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in March, and it spelled the end for Pickett and the Steelers. For a moment, Aaron Ramsdale looked in trouble. Ismaila Sarr , from inside his own half, took aim at the Southampton goal, and Ramsdale was left frantically scrambling back towards his own net. Even a few weeks ago, the sight of Sarr attempting to lob the opposition goalkeeper from his own half would have been unthinkable — it is a sign of his significantly raised confidence. Advertisement Had he executed it slightly better, he would have put Crystal Palace ahead against Southampton in the most audacious way, but his effort was a little too weak and skewed off-target. Yet the only reaction was encouragement; with no obvious alternative options, why not take the shot on? It revealed how things have changed in a peculiar season so far for Sarr and the rest of Palace’s forwards. Only Everton , Ipswich and Southampton have scored fewer than Palace’s 20 goals, but things have certainly been improving in recent games. A goalless draw away to Bournemouth on Boxing Day was a creditable result, even if Palace lacked threat, aside from a fizzing Eberechi Eze shot early in the second half. But before that, Palace had scored in each of their last seven games in all competitions, including two against Manchester City and three against Brighton & Hove Albion . Of the 20 goals Palace have scored in the league this season, 10 have come from their forwards, with Sarr and Jean-Philippe Mateta accounting for four each. The other two have come from Eze, whose second of the season was an instinctive, excellent finish to win Sunday’s game against Southampton 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Earlier this month, manager Oliver Glasner suggested Eze has been trying too hard . “Strikers get confidence when they score,” Glasner said before the win over Ipswich earlier this month. “For example, Eze. He had so many chances this season. All of a sudden he was (over)thinking.” But against Southampton, when it came to doing what comes naturally — latching onto a loose ball and lashing it towards goal — Eze came good. “He had many big chances, great saves from the keeper, missing by one inch, hitting the post,” Glasner said of Eze’s recent form after the match. “All of a sudden, it was in his head. He was suffering. Advertisement “I’m really pleased for him. He had an injury, now he’s playing with a quite swollen foot after an impact at Brighton. This will help him. “You can train with the striker, you can talk to them, hug them, kick them. The only thing that helps is that they need this goal they’re looking for and he got it today.” Palace were not especially convincing against Southampton but did create openings, including opportunities to score more than the two goals that won them the game — the other goal came from a Trevoh Chalobah header, which drew Palace level after going behind to a goal from Tyler Dibling . Mateta was exceptional in holding the ball up, fouled repeatedly by Jan Bednarek . He may only have four goals plus an assist this season, but Mateta has contributed more in his overall play. A contract extension option was triggered by the club last week , after renewal talks were at an impasse for some time, to take his deal until June 2027. Sarr has been boosted by familiarity and fitness, having never played as a No 10 before. “He understands more and more in this position,” Glasner said in his press conference before the draw with Bournemouth. “We showed him the space where he can show his strength.” “In the beginning, I often told him he wasn’t (playing as) the last line, he didn’t find the space in the pocket. Then we showed him. He had the open shape and could go face-to-face with the defender. Then the finish is maybe the confidence. But getting into the situations (to score) is what we showed him. “We wanted to have pace, a player who can make runs in behind. (To find) the perfect profile we are looking for, we can’t spend (a lot of) money so we have to find players with most of the profile, then it’s our job to teach them where they can show their skills and talent.” Sarr may not have got a goal against Southampton but he troubled their defence throughout, particularly in the first half, and linked well with Mateta, as well as playing in Daniel Munoz for an excellent chance in the second half. Advertisement He thrives against high defensive lines, using his pace and newfound awareness to move into the space and exploit it, and he has demonstrated the ability to capitalise on Mateta’s success in the air. Sarr can do little wrong after that brace against Brighton , but appreciation for his recent performances goes beyond that, based on his commitment, hard work and clinical finishing. Neither Eddie Nketiah nor Daichi Kamada stand much chance of dislodging him without dramatic contributions as substitutes. Palace will hope that the goal from Eze — who has scored six from outside the box in the Premier League in 2024, more than any player other than Chelsea ’s Cole Palmer (seven) — is the start of a resurgence for him. It is clear that a combination of Mateta, Sarr and Eze has become Glasner’s preference, even with Eze struggling to make his usual impact to date. Justin Devenny is perhaps the only possible danger to Eze’s position, but he will not start ahead of him. Sarr and Mateta — the latter with his remarkable transformation since the turn of the year — have shown that, with patience and the right circumstances, underwhelming form can be turned around in the blink of an eye. There is no reason why the same can’t be true for Eze. GO DEEPER Jean-Philippe Mateta: Reborn at Crystal Palace and propelling France towards Olympic gold There will clearly be tougher tests than Southampton, but there must now be hope that the trio can flourish together, perhaps even spurred on by further competition in the No 10 role from a January transfer window addition. Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former US president and Nobel peace laureate who rose from humble beginnings in rural Georgia to lead the nation from 1977 to 1981, has died, his nonprofit foundation said Sunday. Carter had been in hospice care since mid-February 2023 at his home in Plains, Georgia — the same small town where he was born and once ran a peanut farm before becoming governor of the Peach State and running for the White House. Carter died “peacefully” at his home in Plains, “surrounded by his family,” The Carter Center said in a statement. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love,” Chip Carter, the former president’s son, said in the statement. Carter was the oldest living ex-US leader and the nation’s longest-lived president — an outcome that seemed unlikely back in 2015 when the Southern Democrat revealed he had brain cancer. But the US Navy veteran and fervent Christian repeatedly defied the odds to enjoy a long and fruitful post-presidency, after four years in the Oval Office often seen as disappointing. During his single term, Carter placed a commitment on human rights and social justice, enjoying a strong first two years that included brokering a peace deal between Israel and Egypt dubbed the Camp David Accords. But his administration hit numerous snags — the most serious being the taking of US hostages in Iran and the disastrous failed attempt to rescue the 52 captive Americans in 1980. He also came in for criticism for his handling of an oil crisis. In November of that year, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan clobbered Carter at the polls, relegating the Democrat to just one term. Reagan, a former actor and governor of California, swept into office on a wave of staunch conservatism. – Active post-presidency – As the years passed, a more nuanced image of Carter emerged — one that took into account his significant post-presidential activities and reassessed his achievements. He founded the Carter Center in 1982 to pursue his vision of world diplomacy, and he was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless efforts to promote social and economic justice. Carter, known for his toothy smile, said basic Christian tenets such as justice and love served as the bedrock of his presidency. He taught Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist, his church in Plains, well into his 90s. In recent years, he had received various hospital treatments, including when he revealed in August 2015 that he had brain cancer and was undergoing radiation. US Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia, who is the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr preached, wished the Carter family comfort as the former president entered hospice last year. “Across life’s seasons, President Jimmy Carter, a man of great faith, has walked with God,” Warnock wrote on X, then Twitter. “In this tender time of transitioning, God is surely walking with him.” In April 2021, President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, met with the Carters at their home in Plains. The White House later released a photo showing the couples smiling together, although only Rosalynn was seen by the press outside, bidding the Bidens farewell while using a walker. Rosalynn, Carter’s wife of 77 years, died on November 19, 2023 at age 96. The former president, who looked frail, poignantly appeared at her memorial service in a wheelchair, with a blanket on his lap bearing their likenesses. Carter is survived by the couple’s four children, three sons and a daughter. AFPJapanese boy band ONE OR EIGHT chatted about their new music, which includes their single “KAWASAKI” with Big Sean. An eight-member boy group, ONE OR EIGHT features such Japanese band members as MIZUKI, NEO, REIA, RYOTA, SOUMA, TAKERU, TSUBASA and YUGA. The group’s name ONE OR EIGHT is a reference to a Japanese phrase that means “All or Nothing.” On their new song “KAWASAKI,” TSUBASA remarked, “Before our debut, we had the opportunity to perform in Los Angeles. Big Sean was there at the performance, and we got the chance to talk with him. When we heard that we’d be collaborating with him on ‘KAWASAKI,’ we were honestly super surprised and honored!” On working with Big Sean, TAKERU stated, “We’re so excited to have had the chance to create this music video with Big Sean, a true legend in the hip-hop scene. We were definitely a bit nervous at first, but his down-to-earth, friendly vibe instantly put us at ease, and the whole shoot ended up going so smoothly.” TAKERU continued, “When the cameras started rolling, he completely transformed—his cool presence, his movements, and his expressions during the performance were just on another level.” “Watching him from behind the scenes, we couldn’t help but think, ‘This is what it means to be a global star.’ It was such a surreal experience, like being in a dream the entire time,” TAKERU added. On their music and songwriting inspirations, NEO said, “Reading novels and watching movies are definitely a huge part of my artistic inspiration. I tend to write down phrases and concepts that I find interesting and try to incorporate them in my craft.” “Besides this, I also try to perceive the events and emotions I go through everyday from different perspectives and sizes. This keeps my creative antennas sharp and keeps me inspired regardless of a tight schedule,” NEO added. On being a part of the digital age, where streaming, technology and social media are so prevalent, REIA said, “In this day and age, we can share information about ONE OR EIGHT with our fans much faster.” “I think the speed of information is a major advantage of living in the digital age,” REIA acknowledged. For young and aspiring artists, MIZUKI said, “I would advise having a strong determination to achieve your goals!” “Personally, before our debut, even when my friends were out having fun, I knew that what I needed most was to practice. Instead of giving in to the temptations to go out or take a break, I kept working hard step by step, and in the end, I was able to be chosen as a debut member,” MIZUKI elaborated. “That’s why I truly believe that having a strong determination is essential for reaching your goals,” MIZUKI added. SOUMA listed the late but great Michael Jackson as his dream collaboration choice in music. “My role model is Michael Jackson. I dream of one day being able to collaborate with his music!” SOUMA exclaimed. Regarding his definition of the word success, RYOTA shared, “The word ‘success’ doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. Success often feels like it implies reaching a goal or an endpoint, but to me, there’s no such thing as a final goal. If you reach the goal, there’s nothing beyond it.” “I believe in always striving one step ahead of any goal. Success isn’t something I’d define for myself – I think it’s something others recognize and express,” RYOTA explained. For their fans and supporters, YUGA remarked about “KAWASAKI,” “I hope you all get a chance to listen to ‘KAWASAKI’ with Big Sean and enjoy the music video!” “We want our fans to know that we will continue working hard and won’t slow down, like a KAWASAKI bike,” YUGA concluded. “KAWASAKI” is available on digital service providers by clicking here .
