AP Trending SummaryBrief at 1:56 p.m. EST"Western countries from the very beginning violated the [Iran nuclear] deal and ultimately Trump tore up the deal," , a political analyst and professor at Tehran University, told Sputnik. "So it is not Iran's fault that we are where we are today." "But instead of accepting the fact that they are to blame, the West wants Iran to be under maximum-pressure sanctions," he added, with the aim of halting "many parts of its peaceful nuclear program." The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) ordered the use of advanced centrifuges on November 22 to step up the enrichment of uranium. That was in response to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) resolution condemning Tehran for "failing to cooperate" with the nuclear watchdog. 06:44 GMT The motion submitted by the US, UK, France and Germany got 19 out of 35 votes on the IAEA Board of Governors. Russia, China and Burkina-Faso voted against, and 12 states abstained. The AEOI denounced the resolution as "politically-motivated, unrealistic, and counterproductive," adding that technical and safety cooperation with the IAEA will continue, as in the past. The pundit argued that Iran has not violated international law and has always operated within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and IAEA regulations. "Iran does ," Marandi said, accusing the US of making the IAEA a tool of coercion. By increasing the enrichment of uranium "the Iranians are sending a clear message to the West that they won't be intimidated and that if the West tries to use the IAEA to put pressure on Iran, Iran will make sure that Western countries pay a price for this," the professor stressed. "The West is on the decline, but they continue to think that they dominate the world," he said. "They have always played a very negative role in our region."Starting today, Max subscribers can watch HBO on Max . OK, so they pretty much always could, but this is a bit different. Max began to roll out “Channels” in the U.S. on Wednesday. The new in-app feature allows subscribers to “stream a live feed of HBO programming directly from the Max app through simulcasts,” in the words of the press release. In other words, it means you can randomly catch the final 20 minutes of a “Game of Thrones” re-run on a Saturday morning — just like the pre-streaming days. Pre-Channels, Max was strictly an on-demand streaming platform . Channels is not exactly a novel concept — and not just because it is literally the old way of programming television. Warner Bros. Discovery already offers a number of FAST channels outside of Max, and Disney+ is adding its own live, curated channels . Channels can serve as a way to put the “HBO” back into what was once “HBO Max.” Warner Bros. Discovery has been criticized for excising the HBO name from the platform’s title, with some arguing that it contributed to a perceived devaluation of the HBO brand, once famously dubbed “Prestige TV ” by former CEO Richard Plepler. (He was biased, but he was right.) The rollout will begin with “a small subset of adult profile users” (kids probably shouldn’t have access to a live feed of HBO’s entire schedule — especially at night) on Max’s ad-free and Ultimate ad-free tiers. (Linear HBO does not have ads; Max has an ad-supported option .) Warner Bros. Discovery already offers a number of FAST channels outside of Max. Disney+ is adding its own live channels that feature curated collections of Disney+ content. Even Criterion Channel is getting into the live channel game . What’s that you say? You’d like more corporate-speak about the feature? Consider it done! Channels “allows subscribers to enjoy the ease of seamlessly entering a live feed of HBO programming while also being able to restart, rewind, and fast-forward, as well as navigate between channels directly from within the player (on select devices), adding flexibility to their live viewing experience all within the Max app,” the announcement continues. “While Max continues to provide personalized content recommendations for every user, the addition of live channels offers the element of serendipity and another route for content discovery.” Show me where Netflix “offers the element of serendipity.” I’ll wait. (2001’s “Serendipity” currently streaming on Max!) In the meantime, Max PR really wants you to know that Channels “provides the infrastructure for future iterations and ongoing innovation of channels including curated collections specifically programmed for Max, featuring themed content from our iconic original programming and robust library.” To explain it in a way that real humans would, the feature paves the way for the Max algorithm to one day put together a personalized streaming channel, just for you. Here is the Channels lineup, with language directly from Max:

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Despite everyone counting them out, including the oddsmakers installing them as three-touchdown underdogs, Michigan players said early in the week their intention was to play loose and have fun. The Wolverines entered the 120th meeting against arch-rival Ohio State on the heels of reaching six wins and bowl eligibility, while the Buckeyes (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) were ranked No. 2 and on a roll. This was supposed to be a mismatch. Michigan had other ideas in a 13-10 win over Ohio State on Saturday before 106,055 at Ohio Stadium, with kicker Dominic Zvada making a go-ahead 21-yard field goal with 45 seconds left. Michigan has now won four straight in the rivalry and two straight in Columbus. OSU coach Ryan Day is now 1-4 against the Wolverines. Michigan outrushed Ohio State, 175-62, in the game. The Wolverines held Ohio State’s offense, which was averaging 439.1 yards, to 252 yards. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 10 nationally in scoring, averaging 37.8 points. Even without starting tight end and leading receiver Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson, both out due to injuries, and with running back Donovan Edwards out for the second half because of an injury, the Wolverines found a way, mostly because of strong defensive play, some miscues by Ohio State — including an interception and two missed field goals — and a tough performance from running back Kalel Mullings. Mullings keyed the game-winning drive that started with 6:13 left and the game tied, 10-10. Mullings had a 27-yard run on third down to the Ohio State 17 and appeared to cramp briefly. But he returned to the game and converted another third down with a 5-yard run. Zvada made two field goals in the game, including what would be the game-winner to culminate the drive. Early in the fourth quarter, Michigan put together an impressive 77-yard, 15-play drive and on first down at the Ohio State 3-yard line, Warren was intercepted at the goal line by Jack Sawyer. He missed wide-open tight end Hogan Hansen. Ohio State, however, was held to a three-and-out. With the game tied to open the second half, Michigan forced Ohio State to stall on its first possession, but the Wolverines went three-and-out. On the Buckeyes’ next series, Howard, on third-and-7, was intercepted for the second time in the game, this time by Makari Paige. Paige had briefly knocked Howard out of the game in the first half and had a key third-down pass breakup. Michigan turned around and on third down, Warren was picked off by Caleb Downs. But Ohio State could not convert that turnover into points, as the Buckeyes missed on a 34-yard field goal, their second miss of the game. Despite the Buckeyes outgaining Michigan, 87-20, in the third quarter and dominating the clock with 10:28 while also recording five first downs to one, neither team scored. Michigan and Ohio State were tied, 10-10, at halftime, the Wolverines’ points coming off an interception of Howard that set up a short touchdown, and strong field position after Michigan’s defense forced a three-and-out and OSU’s 31-yard punt gave Michigan the ball at the Ohio State 39-yard line. Ohio State outgained Michigan, 155-113, and was 11-to-4 on first downs in the first half but was held to 36 rushing yards. Michigan had 82 rushing yards, including 42 on 13 carries by Mullings. Howard, who left the game briefly early in the second quarter after taking a hit from Paige, was 12 of 18 for 119 yards and had a touchdown and interception, and Warren was 6 of 8 for 31 yards. The Wolverines, trailing 3-0, decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 on the first play of the second quarter but Mullings was stuffed by Caleb Downs, giving Ohio State the ball at its 3-yard line. On third-and-9, Howard threw his seventh interception of the season, when Aamir Hall got his second pick in the last two games. Mullings gave the Wolverines a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run. Ohio State missed a chance to pull within a point when Jayden Fielding missed wide left on a 38-yard field goal attempt. Zvada gave Michigan a 10-3 lead with 2:15 left on a 54-yard field goal, his seventh 50-plus field goal in seven attempts. The Buckeyes responded with a nine-play drive covering 75 yards and culminated with Jeremiah Smith scoring on a 10-yard pass to tie the game. ©2024 The Detroit News. Visit detroitnews.com . RELATED CONTENT: ‘Inside the NBA’ will air on ESPN and ABC as part of settlement with NBA By JOE REEDY AP Sports Writer “Inside the NBA” will continue, even though games will no longer be airing on TNT at the end of this season. The popular studio show will appear on ESPN and ABC beginning next season as part of a settlement between Warner Bros. Discovery and the NBA that was announced on Monday. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of TNT Sports, sued the NBA in New York state court in August after the league did not accept the company’s matching offer for one of the packages in its new 11-year media rights deal, which will begin with the 2025-26 season. Even though “Inside the NBA” will be on ESPN and ABC, TNT Sports will continue to produce the show. It will air from Atlanta, except when the show goes on the road. The quartet of Ernie Johnson Jr., Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal will remain with the show. Barkley signed an extension with Warner Bros. Discovery in August despite the company losing the NBA. “‘Inside the NBA’ is universally recognized as one of the best and most culturally impactful shows in sports,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said. “We have long-admired the immensely talented team and are thrilled to add their chemistry and knowledge to our robust set of NBA studio offerings to super-serve NBA fans like never before. The addition of ‘Inside the NBA’ further solidifies ESPN as the preeminent destination for sports fans.” “Inside the NBA” will handle pregame, halftime and postgame coverage of the NBA Finals on ABC, conference finals and the NBA Playoffs. During the regular season, it will be part of opening week coverage, as well as Christmas Day, all ABC games after Jan. 1, the final week of the season and other marquee events. “The opportunity to continue the iconic and Emmy Award-winning ‘Inside the NBA’ is a huge win for basketball fans everywhere,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “We look forward to building on our longstanding partnership with TNT Sports and working together to promote NBA content across key WBD and NBA platforms.” “Inside the NBA” started in 1989, Johnson became the host in 1990 while Smith joined fulltime in 1998. Barkley came aboard in 2000 followed by O’Neal in 2011. The show has garnered 21 Sports Emmy Awards. ESPN will also continue to produce “NBA Countdown” and “NBA Today.” The settlement gives TNT Sports, Bleacher Report and House of Highlights a global license for NBA content with no rights fee for the next 11 years. Warner Bros. Discovery will also continue its relationship with the league’s digital operations, including NBA.com, for five seasons. TNT Sports and the NBA have jointly managed NBA Digital since 2009. Even though TNT Sports will not be airing games in the United States beginning next season, it does have rights to air a full package of games in select countries, including Latin America (excluding Brazil and Mexico), Poland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. TNT Sports will also begin showing 13 Big 12 football and 15 men’s basketball games next season as part of a sublicense with ESPN. TNT will air two College Football Playoff games beginning this season also under a sublicense with ESPN. Turner Sports has had an NBA package since 1984 and games have been on TNT since the network launched in 1988. That will end after this season. “Together these agreements ensure fans will continue to enjoy TNT’s ‘Inside the NBA’ and create tremendous value for our entire portfolio as we accelerate the growth of TNT Sports, Bleacher Report, House of Highlights and our global sports business,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. “We are pleased to partner with the NBA and Disney/ESPN, and to have solidified long-term rights and revenue for WBD.” The Associated Press contributed to this article

sport betting registration COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork said Thursday that he is "absolutely" confident that Ryan Day will be back as football coach in 2025. Calls to fire the sixth-year coach rose among Ohio State fans after the Buckeyes lost to Michigan for the fourth straight year. Bjork, in an interview on 97.1 The Fan, said Day is the man for the job, regardless of how the Buckeyes perform in the College Football Playoff. They host Tennessee in a first-round game Dec. 21. "Coach Day is awesome," said Bjork, who came from Texas A&M to replace the retiring Gene Smith last summer. "He's great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye. So, we're going to support him at the highest level." The 13-10 loss to Michigan followed by an ugly melee between the teams put the coach in a precarious spot. He and his team were booed off the field by the home fans. Bjork ended up releasing a statement expressing his support for the coach. "The reason we had to say something after (the Michigan) game is, we're still breathing, we're still alive," Bjork said. "The season's not over. The book is not closed." Thanks to the playoff, Day has a chance to redeem himself with Ohio State's huge fanbase with a win against the Volunteers — and perhaps more in the 12-team tournament. Regardless of what happens, Day will be back next year, according to Bjork. "Coach Day and I just hit it off so well," Bjork said. "I've been really, really impressed. Every single time I talked to him, I learn something. He's innovative. He recruits at the highest level. He's got a great staff." Day wouldn't directly address his job status last weekend. "When you first come off those types of things, there's a lot of emotion," he said, referring to the Michigan loss. "And then as time goes on, you've got to get refocused because you know what you've done in the past does not affect what's going on moving forward. Everything is out in front of us." Failing to consistently beat Michigan is one of the few flaws in Day's coaching record. Hired as a member of coach Urban Meyer's staff in 2017, Day was the hand-picked successor when Meyer retired after the 2018 season. Compiling an overall 66-10 record, he is widely admired in the coaching community. "Great respect for what he's done in his coaching career, what he's done there at Ohio State and the success that they've had year-in and year-out," Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said. Day is in trouble now because losing The Game is considered an unforgiveable sin by Buckeyes fans. "What we have to do is this whole 'championship or bust' mentality, you want that as the goal, but it has to be about the process," Bjork said. "To me, we've got to maybe change some conversations a little bit. I think we need to maybe just approach things a little bit differently."

NoneMiss World Myanmar 2025 set this JanuaryArticle content A German documentary is accusing Prince Harry and his wife Meghan of hypocrisy for using their royal titles to make money. Recommended Videos The documentary Harry: The Lost Prince, which aired in Germany on Tuesday night, quotes British royal reporters and experts about the couple’s charity work and campaigns, which is in stark contrast to their life of luxury in California. “If you have a situation where Harry and Meghan are earning huge amounts of money in Hollywood trading off their reputations, but then they’re also bolstering their reputations by working for the queen — they’re able to present themselves on the world stage as being these working members of the royal family who are also available for a price,” Jack Royston, from the podcast The Royal Report , told Britain’s Daily Mail . “That is a huge compromise to demand of the monarchy. If they were to be perceived to be promoting their commercial projects while representing the queen, then that’s also ... starting to border on corruption there because they should never be using the monarchy as a platform.” The program is said to contrast the couple’s visits to impoverished countries with Meghan’s love of designer fashion. “If you’re going to places like Nigeria, like Colombia, which have huge socio-economic problems, some of the world’s poorest communities in these countries and you’re turning up wearing tens of thousands of pounds worth of designer clothes, it really doesn’t send the right message,” reporter Russel Myers said in the film. Ulrike Grunewald, the German journalist who directed the documentary, said she was “surprised” at the ineffectiveness of the couple’s Archewell Foundation, which is a mix of for-profit and non-profit businesses. “The amount of donations has fallen drastically in one year: From $13 million in 2021 to $2 million in 2022,” she said. “According to their own documents, Harry and Meghan only work one hour a week for the Archewell Foundation.” RECOMMENDED VIDEO The documentary also takes a jab at Harry and Meghan for not socializing with Montecito’s wealthy residents as the southern California town is known as a celebrity enclave with home prices in the millions. “It doesn’t come cheap,” one neighbour, Richard Mineards, said in the film. “I mean ... most houses are about $8 million or $9 million.” But he took issue with the aloof couple not being friendlier. “I personally don’t think that Meghan is an asset to our community ... She doesn’t really go out or get involved with the community” he said. “Harry has to a certain extent because he’s quite jolly ... but Meghan doesn’t seem to get seen anywhere ... And you don’t see him either.”

The ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to compete in the Mountain West Conference women's championship opening this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by nine current players against the Mountain West Conference challenging the league's policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans woman volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player's name because she has not commented publicly on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Crews' ruling referred to the athlete as an "alleged transgender" player and noted that no defendant disputed that the San Jose State roster includes a transgender woman player. San Jose State will "continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said in a statement, confirming that all its student-athletes are eligible to participate under NCAA and conference rules. "We are gratified that the Court rejected an eleventh-hour attempt to change those rules. Our team looks forward to competing in the Mountain West volleyball tournament this week." The conference did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The players filed a notice for emergency appeal with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Crews said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a loss in league standings. He also refused a request to re-seed the tournament without the forfeited losses. The judge said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 — making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season's awareness of her reported identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a major election year. Crews' ruling also said injunctions are meant to prevent harm, but in this case, he argued, the harm has already occurred. The games have been forfeited, the tournament has been seeded, the teams have made travel plans and the participants have confirmed they're playing. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. Colorado State is seeded first and San Jose State, second. The teams split their regular-season matches and both get byes into Friday's semifinals. San Jose State will play the winner of Wednesday's match between Utah State and Boise State — teams that both forfeited matches to SJSU during the regular season. The conference tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. San Jose State coach Todd Kress, whose team has not competed in the national tournament since 2001, has said his team has been getting "messages of hate" and that has taken a toll on his players. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official conference standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada's players stated they "refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes," without elaborating. Nevada did not qualify for the conference tournament. The nine current players and others now suing the Mountain West Conference, the California State University Board of Trustees and others include San Jose State senior setter and co-captain Brooke Slusser. The teammate Slusser says is transgender hits the volleyball with more force than others on the team, raising fear during practices of suffering concussions from a head hit, the complaint says. The Independent Council on Women's Sports is funding a separate lawsuit against the NCAA for allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports. Both lawsuits claim the landmark 1972 federal antidiscrimination law known as Title IX prohibits transgender women in women's sports. Title IX prohibits sexual discrimination in federally funded education; Slusser is a plaintiff in both lawsuits. Several circuit courts have used a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to conclude that discriminating against someone based on their transgender status or sexual orientation is sex-based discrimination, Crews wrote. That means case law does not prove the "likelihood of success" needed to grant an injunction. An NCAA policy that subjects transgender participation to the rules of sports governing bodies took effect this academic year. USA Volleyball says a trans woman must suppress testosterone for 12 months before competing. The NCAA has not flagged any issues with San Jose State. The Republican governors of Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming have made public statements in support of the team cancellations, citing fairness in women's sports. President-elect Donald Trump likewise has spoken out against allowing transgender women to compete in women's sports. Crews was a magistrate judge in Colorado's U.S. District Court for more than five years before President Joe Biden appointed him as a federal judge in January.

("OPT" or "the Company") (NYSE American: OPTT), today announced financial results for the second quarter ended October 31, 2024 (Q2FY25). Q2FY25 Financial Highlights Strategic partnerships continue to expand our market presence: The Company reaffirms its previously issued guidance that it believes it will reach profitability (excluding unanticipated extraordinary expenses) during the fourth quarter of calendar 2025. Performance to date reflects strong demand for products, effective cost management, and progress on our strategic initiatives. Recent achievements, including previously announced partnerships, operational milestones, successful exercises and continued customer deliveries, evidence the Company's trajectory toward achieving this stated objective. On August 12, 2024, Paragon Technologies announced via press release that its Board of Directors had resolved to terminate its shareholder campaign and all related activities targeting OPT and had terminated Hesham M. Philipp Stratmann, OPT's CEO and President, stated "I'm incredibly proud of the progress we've made this quarter. Our strategic emphasis on national security, critical infrastructure, and international market expansion continues to deliver results. Museum exhibitions see growing fan base in ChinaBC celebrates 40th anniversary of Doug Flutie's Miracle in Miami pass with 41-21 win over NCHappy holidays from Bad Bunny, who announced Thursday he will release a new album Jan. 5. “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” which translates to “I should have taken more photos,” is his sixth studio album and follows in his tradition of releasing new music on unexpected dates. His debut album, 2018’s “X 100PRE," arrived around Christmas and 2020's “El Último Tour del Mundo” near Thanksgiving. The January release date is just before “Día de Reyes,” or Three Kings Day, and is a Sunday — unlike the industry's standard Friday release date. The Puerto Rican musician announced the news on Instagram in a short video featuring filmmaker Jacobo Morales. He also released a new single, “PIToRRO DE COCO.” A day before, Bad Bunny teased a 17-track list on social media, with each song titled “BOMBA,” perhaps in reference to the Puerto Rican musical style and dance. “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” follows 2023's “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana” (“Nobody Knows What Will Happen Tomorrow”), which was met with mixed reviews. On that album, Bad Bunny's reggaeton offerings were limited, returning instead to the Latin trap of “X 100PRE” in songs like “MONACO” and “GRACIAS POR NADA.” The announcement caps a busy year for El Conejo Malo. Bad Bunny made headlines after he threw his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris shortly after a comedian at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally made crude jokes about Latinos and called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” He also canvassed North America on his “Most Wanted Tour,” which made The Associated Press' list of the best concerts of the year.

Now that the Cabinet has been nominated, though as yet lacking the Senate's "Advise and Consent", White House Advisers appointed, and many public statements made before and after Election Night, what is shaping up for Trump's Fifth Year in office? Tariffs: Seem to be a Go, and the EU is not on the first list of targets. Most economic experts say tariffs will hurt American consumers, driving up inflation and prices. The opposite to what Trump promised in what many say is the commitment that won him the election. Retribution : Vingince, Bejasus! on the likes of Jack Smith, Joe Biden and just about anyone who crossed Trump. Pam Bondi's nomination is likely to be confirmed, and she will probably prove to be a more effective persecuter of Trump's enemies list than Matt Gaetz. But, while the enemies list is extensive, the specific targets are still unknown, with Jack Smith (plus his entire team, apparenently) as the ones most certain to be employing defence lawyers. (Mass?) Deportations of Illegal Immigrants : Looks like it will happen, but the extent is unknown. Could be a low-key operation delicately targeting illegals who have committed crimes, or a series of brutal show-me-your-papers sweeps of both urban and rural America. If Trump tries to use the US military, it will be the subject of legal challenge. NATO/ Ukraine: Status uncertain. At least both Ukraine and NATO were prepared for a Trump Presidency, and any hasty declarations have not happened. That is, besides the Sec Def nominee shooting his mouth off in a blatantly anti-Ukraine and anti-NATO manner. Hopefully, this will prevent his confirmation, as it should. Ukraine is prepared for negotiations, but Putin is not, from the looks of things. Project 2025 : Claiming ignorance of this program seems to help Trump get elected, as it was deeply unpopular. However, he has appointed many people who were associated with it, and it will obviously influence how the Trump Administration plays out. For example, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, is already threatening civil servants. Renewable Energy/ "Green New Deal" : Uncertain. Many supporters of renewable energy are convinced the energy revolution is irreversible, no matter what Trump does. The biggest deployer of renewable energy is the deep red state of Texas. Many factories of renewable energy components are in red states, and Republican Congressmen have already made their concerns known. Health : Uncertain. The appointments are pretty wild, a collection of quacks, charlatans laced with a couple of decently qualified people. But the signs are bad from the likes of RFK Jr, who may implement wacky and harmful ideas. Women's Reproductive Rights : There will almost certainly be an attack on women's reproductive rights, though it is not clear what form it will take. Certainly, women can consider themselves lucky if legal availability of abortion medication survives the next four years. Texas and Lousiana are already legislating them as "controlled substances". A federal law controlled them cannot be ruled out. You cannot look at this incoming Administration without recognising its deeply misogynistic leaning e.g. several nominees with sexual scandals in their past. A #MeToo worst nightmare. Department of Government Efficency (DOGE) : Uncertain, but so hyped that will probably have to produce something. Maybe just an excuse to give Musk and Ramaswamy something to do, with the end product a report to gather dust in the archives? Or an excuse to justify mass civil service dismissals (Project 2025) under the guise of "efficiency"? Any others I have forgotten? More than three-quarters of all of Canada’s exports go to the US – almost $600bn worth – including energy, lumber and auto parts. Successive decades of free trade have knitted the two countries together more or less seamlessly. Canada would also likely retaliate, imposing tariffs of its own on US goods, driving up the cost of imported American items. Making matters worse for Canadians would be if the Canadian dollar falls as a result – and it has already taken an immediate hit, dropping about 1 cent against the US dollar following Trump’s announcement. A 25% tariff on all goods would set off by far the largest trade war between the two allies – dwarfing the last one he started. In 2018, the first time Trump was president, he imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium, before eventually relenting about a year later. Those tariffs pitted the US against all its major trading partners including the EU, China, Canada and Mexico . RE: USMCA: "The U.S. has used two main arguments in support of the review clause: 1) the clause would provide the U.S. with leverage to make ongoing changes to the agreement and 2) it would force politicians to address difficult decisions rather than delay confronting them. On the first point, the U.S. Trade Representative during the Trump Administration, Robert Lighthizer, wrote that “we wanted a paradigm-changing agreement that would not only address current trade irritants but prevent the United States from ever again finding itself saddled with an unbalanced, outdated agreement and with no leverage to change it other than the costly and disruptive threat of outright withdrawal.” Similarly, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and Senior Adviser to the President during the negotiations, asserted that “...it is imperative that the U.S. retain leverage in any of our trading relationships to prevent unfair trade practices and market distortions and correct them when they occur. The sunset provision will give us just that.” USMCA review: Upcoming elections and a path forward Joshua P. The match started at 7pm in the York Barbican and it took almost two and a half hours for the first four frames to be played and give everyone a break for the mid session interval. It's a race to six frames for a place in the final against Judd Trump. After another drawn out affair in frame five after the interval, the BBC commentary team began to suspect Antrim man Allen was playing games of a different sort. Indeed, it was Allen's regular sparring partner Shaun Murphy who labelled the pace of play a 'clear gameplan' from the world No.3. Read next: Mark Allen believes he may need to 'see someone' after worrying admission on his results Read next: Mark Allen says Ronnie O'Sullivan is GOAT but he is 'law unto himself' and should show 'more respect' "It's completely within the rules, he's not doing anything wrong. But at what stage do we question whether the amount of time Mark Allen is taking over simple decisions is a tactic to annoy his opponent?," said Shaun Murphy. "I think we are witnessing an extremely clever, well thought out match from Mark Allen to try and beat the man. "It's an old school tactic. It's from a playbook my generation and Mark's generation are from. And it's perfectly within the rules. But I can't see any reason, other than that for why he's taking so long. As you look at Barry in his chair, you might say it was working." John Parrott was on co commentary and countered, adding: "I grew up playing against Terry Griffiths and Cliff Thorborn. Trust me, that was no day at the beach. You just got to find a way to comepete with it and put up with it. "If someone plays slow, you got to have patience." On the table, Allen took frame five with a break of 64 - his highest of the match to date from either player. Another epic frame followed with Allen again coming out on top - despite Murphy being baffled by some of Allen's shot selections once again. Other world champions, Steve Davis and Ken Doherty, were asked about the possible tactic and how that was in sharp contrast to Allen's usual pacy play. The 'Pistol' is defending champion of the snooker Shoot Out, where speedy play is the order of the day. "I'm not sure it's deliberate, like Shaun says," replied six-time world champ Davis. "He probably would have been in the top three or four fastest players in the world but over the last couple of seasons he'd be way down. His average shot time is 32 seconds (here)," remarked Dubliner Doherty. Davis added: "He's been getting success by being more granite and obviously that encourages him to do more of it. He's gone back to his coach with a view to alignment or technical issues. I've got a feeling that's a red herring. "I think his coach should be telling him to speed up, get a bit of rhythm, get a bit of feel back. Because without playing shots regularly, you lose your touch. If you are playing disjointed snooker, you get out of position." The race to six semi-final ran long into the night in York ahead of Sunday's final. With three hours played, Allen led 4-2. Jonah Goldberg Among elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. But the opportunity is there -- and has been there all along. Goldberg is editor-in-chief of The Dispatch: thedispatch.com . Catch the latest in Opinion

The Green Party is set to suffer significant losses in the Irish General Election, with its leader expecting just a handful of parliamentarians to be returned. Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman said the party could not buck the trend in Ireland of junior coalition partners in Fine Gael and Fianna Fail governments losing support in subsequent elections. He said they expected to retain two to three seats out of the 12 they had won in the 2020 election on the back of a worldwide “Green wave”. “Undoubtedly it’s a disappointing result for our party today,” Mr O’Gorman told reporters in Ongar, Dublin. “It’s hard for a smaller party in government, that’s long been the tradition, the history in Ireland. We hoped going into the election to buck that but we haven’t been able to buck that today.” Mr O’Gorman, a candidate in Dublin West, is among the outgoing Green Party TDs in a battle to retain their seats. Culture Minister Catherine Martin, who is fighting to remain a Green Party TD for Dublin Rathdown, said it was a “very tight” race in her four-seat constituency. “We go in (to government) not afraid of that because the issue of the climate and biodiversity crisis is (greater) than our survival,” she said on RTE Radio. “I stand over and am proud of our track record of delivery.” Green candidate in Waterford Marc O Cathasaigh said he would not be “in the shake-up” to retain his seat in that constituency, while junior minister Ossian Smyth looks at risk of losing his seat in Dun Laoghaire. Junior minister Joe O’Brien is expected to lose his seat in Dublin Fingal, Neasa Hourigan is at risk in Dublin Central, while Wicklow’s Steven Matthews garnered just 4% of first preferences. Former Green Party leader Eamon Ryan, who announced his retirement from frontline politics in June, said his party had not had a good day. Arriving at the count centre at the RDS in Dublin, the outgoing environment minister told reporters: “If you don’t get elected you accept that, but you come back stronger and you learn lessons, and we’ve done that in the past and we will do that again.” He added: “No matter what the results today there will be a strong Green Party in Ireland, we have deep roots in the community and it’s a very distinct political philosophy and I think there is still space for that in Irish politics, for sure.” Mr Ryan said he did not believe his decision to retire, and the timing of his announcement, had affected the party’s showing. “Unfortunately – and this is just one of those days – we didn’t get the number of votes,” he said. He added: “We’ll look back and see what are the lessons, and what can we learn and what can we do differently. “It’s just one of those days when we didn’t have a good day.

The fourth, and most recent, Moxy to open in Manhattan doubles down on the brand’s design and style trademarks – funky, quirky, whimsical and aimed at the young and young-at-heart. Just to the right of the 303-room hotel’s entrance are two spiral staircases that take you down to on-site restaurant Sake No Hana. Inside to the left is the door to piano lounge Silver Lining. The look Interior fitout is unique and funky. The hotel occupies an impressive box of black steel, concrete and glass right on the former skid row – and now achingly hip – Bowery. Even before you take the elevator to your room, you’ll be playing a game of spot-the-quirk, taking photos and posting them to Instagram. Numerous unique touches from interior designers Michaelis Boyd and Rockwell Group include a statue of a hula-hooping bear, a hanging birdcage seat, a vintage Ms Pacman machine, a shuffleboard table, and lolly dispensers from Lower East Side institution Economy Candy. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A fight broke out at midfield after Michigan stunned No. 2 Ohio State 13-10 on Saturday as Wolverines players attempted to plant their flag and were met by Buckeyes who confronted them. Police had to use pepper spray to break up the players, who threw punches and shoves in the melee that overshadowed the rivalry game. Ohio State police said in a statement “multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray.” Ohio State police will investigate the fight, according to the statement. After the Ohio State players confronted their bitter rivals at midfield, defensive end Jack Sawyer grabbed the top of the Wolverines' flag and ripped it off the pole as the brawl moved toward the Michigan bench. Eventually, police officers rushed into the ugly scene. Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he understood the actions of his players. “There are some prideful guys on our team who weren't going to sit back and let that happen,” Day said. The two Ohio State players made available after the game brushed off questions about it. Michigan running back Kalel Mullings, who rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown, didn't like how the Buckeyes players involved themselves in the Wolverines' postgame celebration. He called it “classless.” “For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game," he said in an on-field interview with Fox Sports. “It’s just bad for the sport, bad for college football. But at the end of the day, you know some people got to — they got to learn how to lose, man. ... We had 60 minutes, we had four quarters, to do all that fighting.” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said everybody needs to do better. “So much emotions on both sides," he said. "Rivalry games get heated, especially this one. It’s the biggest one in the country, so we got to handle that better.” Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. The arrest warrant is the latest development in the escalating tensions between the government of Mali, one of Africa's top gold producers, and miners operating in the country after Mali revised its mining code. According to a document seen by Reuters, Bristow is accused of money laundering and violation of financial regulations. Authorities in Mali have already arrested, charged, and detained four senior local employees of Barrick in September over the dispute. They are now awaiting trial until the authorities resolve how to divide the economic benefits of Mali’s biggest gold mine, the Loulo-Gounkoto complex – operated by Barrick Gold. The operation accounted for nearly 14% of the Toronto-based company’s annual gold production and almost 12% of total revenue last year. Despite the news of the arrest, retail sentiment around Barrick Gold improved to ‘neutral’ (45/100) from ‘bearish’ a day ago along with an uptick in chatter to ‘high’ as some users on the platform empathized with the company. Since taking control in 2020, Mali's military government has strengthened ties with Russia and brought in Kremlin-linked mercenaries to fight an Islamist insurgency, prompting the withdrawal of European and UN peacekeepers. Facing financial strain, Mali's authorities have pressured miners to settle claims from a sector-wide audit, which Barrick described as "legally and factually flawed." The government is negotiating over $840 million in settlements with major miners, including Barrick, which has yet to reach an agreement. Mali is also revising its mining code to increase royalties tied to gold prices. However, despite Barrick's $370 million settlement offer, the government has threatened to revoke Loulo’s permits in 2026. Where to sleep? “The Haneda Airport departure terminal’s good,” a 45-year-old Osaka executive tells Spa (Dec 3-10). For sleep? Why not? “Our company’s top accommodation allowance for business travel is 18,000 yen a night” – not bad compared to the maximum 10,900 yen a night a mid-level government employee is permitted by law; still – “I’ve never found a hotel room in Tokyo at that rate. A colleague said to me, ‘Try Haneda.’ Okay, I thought, I’ll try Haneda.” Sure enough: “The chairs are spacious, you can stretch your legs out, there’s a convenience store, a coffee shop...” Word’s getting around: most nights it’s full almost to capacity. Tokyo is desperately short of hotel rooms, Spa finds. The post-COVID surge of inbound tourism has shown Japan’s enormous appeal to the world (the cheap yen helps of course). Never have so many foreign tourists strained the limits of Japan’s facilities and hospitality, their number projected to hit 35 million by year’s end. Tokyo’s hotel prices soar, “no vacancy” signs multiply. Where’s a business traveler to lay his or her head? Some are driven to some pretty desperate shifts, and the remarkable thing is, if Spa’s report is any indication, how tolerant they are of the stresses involved, what an easygoing sense of humor they display. Sleep and repose issue the strangest invitations, conceal themselves in the most unlikely places. No one noticed when a hotel room was to be had for a click or a phone call. What business traveler would have thought then of sleeping in... well, for example, a car share car. These are cars rented by the hour or half hour or kilometer for errands. They’re not meant to be slept in and in fact industry regulations more or less ban it, but growing demand exerts its force and topple the barriers. “There’s a certain campground I park at for 500 yen,” says a 37-year-old business traveler from Shiga Prefecture. “There’s a coin shower and everything.” Scanning the internet, a 35-year-old from Hyogo Prefecture happened on a love hotel offering rooms for an astonishingly economical 5,000 yen. It was in a remote back street, but what of that? Nothing – but “really,” he thought as he stood outside, “is this a love hotel?” More like a disused warehouse it seemed: heavy iron door, moldy smell. “I wouldn’t bring a lover here” – but he was alone, it was only for one night, the price was right; still, an uncomfortable night it proved to be; he felt uneasy in ways he couldn’t put his finger on, and when he woke up in the morning the sheets were inexplicably soaking wet. “Back home, I told my wife about it, and she said immediately: ‘A ghost!’” It’s as good an explanation as any. The legal limit on accommodation allowances for government employees seems utterly out of touch with reality – perhaps because reality changed so quickly. 10,900 yen! Not everyone stumbles on a “ghost love hotel” – or would settle for one. “There are late night meetings and I need a place near Kasumigaseki” – Tokyo’s political core – says a 57-year-old bureaucrat from Osaka. With nothing to be had anywhere nearby for less than 20,000 yen, he feels he has no choice. He pays the difference out of his own pocket. Other options where various budget arrangements can be made, varying degrees of discomfort more or less cheerfully endured, and also various unexpected pleasures enjoyed, include internet cafes, aesthetic salons, co-working spaces (part coffee shop, part office space for remote workers), remote suburban hotels that are available and reasonably priced but likely far from wherever your business is, and last but not least – this is not for everyone – a park bench. Not for everyone, but a 28-year-old company employee from Osaka, blessed with the adaptability of youth, grinned and bore it and even enjoyed it. “It was last September, still very hot. but in the park it was nice and cool and I got five hours of good sleep. And there’s a fully equipped toilet, so I could wash a bit and brush my teeth.” What more do you need at 28? “The only trouble was,” he says, “mosquitoes. I had to get mosquito repellent at a convenience store for 1000 yen.” So it wasn’t entirely free after all.

Kennedy Jr., his nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, “to take on the illness industrial complex, and all the horrible chronic diseases left in its wake.” During his first term, Trump appointed Oz to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition. Oz said on X that he was honored to be nominated by Trump to lead CMS. “I look forward to serving my country to Make America Healthy Again under the leadership of the HHS Secretary, Robert Kennedy Jr.,“ who called Oz, a friend in his own X post and said his nomination was “outstanding.” Subscribe to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Be a smarter, better informed investor. He would also oversee the Affordable Care Act marketplace , which insures over 21 million people. Oz would also take the helm of an enormous bureaucracy and budget. The CMS is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that sets Medicare payment rates for hospitals, doctors, labs, and other service providers. The agency's budget is nearly $1.5 trillion yearly, about 14% of the federal government’s annual spending. Oz has impeccable medical training. He is an alum of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Wharton Business School. Trump also noted that Oz was a professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Columbia University. As a television personality, however, Oz has a spotty record and a penchant for pushing unproven products. One study in the BMJ journal found that less than half of the products he promoted on his show were medically proven and 13% contradicted known medical advice. Sen. Patty Murray (D., Wash.) said it was “deeply disappointing” to see someone “with zero qualifications” picked to lead CMS. “We need serious leaders when it comes to protecting Americans’ healthcare and bringing down costs — not TV hosts whose main qualification is their loyalty to Donald Trump,” she said. The CMS administrator is not part of the Cabinet but requires Senate confirmation. How Oz might change Medicare, Medicaid and the ACA The incoming CMS administrator will face several challenges to ensure the quality and sustainability of programs. For example, should the administrator fight to extend government subsidies to enable people to buy coverage in the Affordable Care Act exchanges? The administrator will likely also address payments for the Medicaid program and negotiations with drugmakers over the prices of some medications under Medicare. On his 2022 Oz Senate campaign website , Oz suggested that, if elected, he would “work to dismantle policies that lead to more expensive prescription drugs for our seniors.” Oz strongly supported Medicare Advantage , promising he would “expand access to private sector plans expanded by President Trump and beloved by seniors for their low costs and high quality that could be available to all Americans who want them.” Just this month, Republicans in Congress discussed cuts to Medicaid, which could threaten health coverage for roughly a fifth of poor Americans. At a similar crossroads is Medicare, the federal government’s second-largest budget item (as part of the larger health spending category), accounting for $848 billion, or roughly 12% of the budget last year . If confirmed, Oz would likely reduce Medicaid spending, encourage privatization of Medicare through Advantage plans, build on the Biden administration's drug price negotiation efforts and reform the ACA marketplace. 4 stag derby We are living through a period of unprecedented species extinction due to human-induced changes to the planet's ecosystems . This is not the first time human activities radically changed relationships between land and life. Illustrated by a famous photograph of remains, the extermination of bison from the North American West in the 19th century is one key example of catastrophic species loss. As a visual studies researcher, I use photographs to analyze the impacts of colonization on human and non-human lives. Images of bison bones provide a window into the cultural and ecological relations that tie animal and human lives together . Through photographs, we can also think about bison extermination as part of a history of relationships . An iconic image The most famous photograph of bison extermination is a grisly image of a mountain of bison skulls. It was taken outside of Michigan Carbon Works in Rougeville, Mich., in 1892. This photo from 1892 shows two men with an enormous pile of American bison (buffalo) skulls. Originally numbering 30-60 million, commercial hunting and government campaigns aimed at destroying the Indian way of life ultimately reduced the total bison population to Sunday was a good day for Buffalo, to put it mildly. A 40-14 shellacking of the New York Jets will always feel good for Bills fans. Josh Allen put together another dominant performance to build his MVP case , and the defense continued to generate turnovers. It was such a blowout that Buffalo had an opportunity to cycle in some depth players to give them some playing time. Wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, a preseason fan favorite , caught his first career pass and decided he was just going to keep running all the way to the end zone. He stuck around on the practice squad, and was elevated for Sunday's game. It was a simple screen pass, but Shavers effectively wove in and out of traffic and put on the afterburners to turn his first career catch into a touchdown. "The joy that our team felt from that was pretty special," Allen said after the game. "He's been a guy that's just continued to get better and work extremely hard. He's a locker room guy. Everybody loves him, you know, from being cut after training camp, being on the [practice] squad, being called up, and then to go make a play like that. That was a special moment for him, but I think it was a special moment for the team, because we understand how hard he works, that the time that he puts into his craft, to learn the playbook. He knows every position. You can't help but root for a guy that continues to work hard, and we're just happy that he made a play." Allen was gushing about his young, speedy wide receiver. Whether or not Shavers goes on to have many more opportunities in his NFL career, it's always great to see a guy continue to work for his dreams and capitalize on his moment. Who knows, maybe this was enough for him to get a few more looks from the coaching staff. This article first appeared on A to Z Sports and was syndicated with permission.

When fire threatened a California university, the school says it knew what to doCarter was dubbed the "Rock & Roll President" and was championed by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and the Allman Brothers for his support of music in the White House Former United States President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. Carter’s death was announced by the Carter Center , the late President’s non-profit organisation and a statement from his son Chip. Per the statement, Carter died peacefully and was surrounded by his family. His death at 100 also made him the longest living President in US history. Chip said of his father: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” President Carter – full name James Earl Carter Jr. – served as the 39th President of the United States between 1977 and 1981. Besides his presidency, Carter was celebrated for his humanitarian work, and for championing music in politics. Carter’s affinity for music would see him champion and emphasise the importance of music’s cultural presence and a connecting point for people. This was further cemented by his friendships with Bob Dylan , Willie Nelson and the Allman Brothers, earning him the titled of Rock & Roll President. President Jimmy Carter and Willie Nelson. Credit: Thomas S. England/Getty Images President Carter’s love for music was later chronicled in the 2020 documentary Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President. In the documentary, Bob Dylan said of Carter: “[Carter] put my mind at ease by not talking down to me, and showing me that he had a sincere appreciation of the songs I had written. He’s a kindred spirit to me of a rare kind.” Carter’s ability to connect with people across political lines saw the likes of John Lennon and John Wayne attend his inauguration celebration in 1977, with Aretha Franklin singing ‘God Bless America’. Paul Simon also dedicated ‘American Tune’ to the President. During his time in Office, Carter and his administration often hosted concerts and musical guests in the White House, including Dolly Parton , Charles Mingus, Willie Nelson and Crosby, Stills and Nash . In a newly published Rolling Stone interview with Allman Brothers’ Dickey Betts dating back to February 2023, Betts spoke of Carter, recalling how they met and became friends: “We became close to him, and he asked us if we’d help with his campaign [with benefit concerts]. We’d met governors and things like that, but they never really included us. Jimmy was a friend to rock music, so a lot of the guys helped him out a great deal.” Jimmy Carter. Credit: Bettmann/Getty Images Outside of his championing of music, Carter was also a prolific philanthropist and humanitarian, being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development”. Carter’s 100th birthday was celebrated in September with performances from Killer Mike, Drive-by Truckers, Eric Church and more . Adam Titlbach had the only goal for Vancouver Giants – his eighth tally of the season – as Everett Silvertips scored two power play goals and two shorthanded goals in a 7-1 win on Friday night, Nov. 30 at the Langley Events Centre. Giants Head Coach Manny Viveiros apologized to the fans. "We just got outclassed," Viveiros said. "Completely outclassed. Credit to Everett. They're good. They work. They know their identity. They know how to play. Even if they don't have their game, they stick with it. We don't do that. Our group doesn't do that. When things get tough sometimes, guys do individual things instead of staying with the system or giving ourselves an opportunity to at least compete. We didn't do that tonight. I'm just sorry for the fans that had to watch that tonight. It was not a good effort from our group at all tonight." The Giants' record drops to 10-9-4 this season, while the first place Silvertips improve to 20-3-2-1. Everett has a league best 12 road wins and have one regulation loss in their last 18 games (14-1-2-1). Julius Miettinen scored a pair for Everett, who also got goals from Dominik Rymon, Carter Bear, Clarke Schaefer, Jesse Heslop and Tyler McKenzie. The final shots on goal in the game were 40-19 for Everett. Silvertips got things started with a shorthanded goal 6:31 into the first period, after McKenzie stole the puck on the forecheck and found Rymon for a one-timer. The visitors extended their lead to 2-0 with 31 seconds left in the first period when Bear got the last touch at the far post following a tremendous pad save from Carter Capton. Less than five minutes into period two, Vancouver got some life thanks to an Everett turnover where Brett Olson fed a pass to Titlbach in front of the goal. Several minutes later, however, Everett went back ahead by two thanks to Schaeffer's first career WHL goal, off a good shot pass from defenceman Eric Jamieson from the left circle. Miettinen would get on the board with another shorthanded goal when he beat two Giants defenders to a loose puck at centre ice and broke in alone, firing home his eighth of the season to make the score 4-1 after 40 minutes. Heslop scored 29 seconds into the third period to stretch the Silvertips lead to 5-1, before Miettinen and McKenzie added goals as well, making it a 7-1 final. Everett outshot Vancouver 40-19. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop for the airline. The order, which prevented planes from taking off, was issued at the airline's request. The airline said in an email that the problem was caused by trouble with vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. An American Airlines employee wearing looks toward quiet check-in counters Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, a union representing American Airlines pilots, said the airline told pilots at 7 a.m. Eastern that there was an outage affecting the system known as FOS. It handles different types of airline operations, including dispatch, flight planning, passenger boarding, as well as an airplane's weight and balance data, he said. Some components of FOS have gone down in the past, but a systemwide outage is rare, Tajer said. Flights were delayed across American's major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Out of the 3,901 domestic and international American Airlines flights scheduled for Tuesday, 19 were canceled. Cirium noted that the vast majority of flights departed within two hours of their scheduled departure time. A similar percentage — 36% — arrived at their destinations as scheduled. Meanwhile, the flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 4,058 flights entering or leaving the U.S., or serving domestic destinations, were delayed, with 76 flights canceled. The site had not posted any American Airlines flights on Tuesday morning, but showed in the afternoon that 961 American flights were delayed. Cirium said Dallas-Fort Worth, New York's Kennedy Airport and Charlotte, North Carolina, saw the greatest number of delays. Washington, Chicago and Miami experienced considerably fewer delays. Travelers wait in line for security checks Tuesday at the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles. Amid the travel problems, significant rain and snow were expected in the Pacific Northwest at least into Christmas Day. Showers and thunderstorms developed in the South. Freezing rain was reported in the Mid-Atlantic region near Baltimore and Washington, and snow fell in New York. Because the holiday travel period lasts weeks, airports and airlines typically have smaller peak days than they do during the rush around Thanksgiving, but the grind of one hectic day followed by another takes a toll on flight crews. Any hiccups — a winter storm or a computer outage — can snowball into massive disruptions. That is how Southwest Airlines stranded 2 million travelers in December 2022, and Delta Air Lines suffered a smaller but significant meltdown after a worldwide technology outage in July caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations even more disruptive than during slower periods. That is especially true for smaller budget airlines that have fewer flights and fewer options for rebooking passengers. Only the largest airlines, including American, Delta and United, have "interline agreements" that let them put stranded customers on another carrier's flights. An American Airlines employee wearing a Santa Claus hat walks through the American terminal Tuesday at Miami International Airport in Miami. This will be the first holiday season since a Transportation Department rule took effect that requires airlines to give customers an automatic cash refund for a canceled or significantly delayed flight. Most air travelers were already eligible for refunds, but they often had to request them. Passengers still can ask to get rebooked, which is often a better option than a refund during peak travel periods. Finding a last-minute flight on another airline tends to be expensive. An American spokesperson said Tuesday was not a peak travel day for the airline — with about 2,000 fewer flights than the busiest days — so the airline had somewhat of a buffer to manage the delays. The groundings happened as millions of travelers were expected to fly over the next 10 days. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 40 million passengers through Jan. 2. Airlines expect to have their busiest days on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. American Airlines employees check in travelers Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations more disruptive than during slower periods. Even with just a brief outage, the cancellations have a cascading effect that can take days to clear up. About 90% of Americans traveling far from home over the holidays will be in cars, according to AAA. "Airline travel is just really high right now, but most people do drive to their destinations, and that is true for every holiday," AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. Gasoline prices are similar to last year. The nationwide average Thursday was $3.04 a gallon, down from $3.13 a year ago, according to AAA. Charging an electric vehicle averages just under 35 cents per per kilowatt hour, but varies by state. Transportation-data firm INRIX says travel times on the nation's highways could be up to 30% longer than normal over the holidays, with Sunday expected to see the heaviest traffic. "It's not the destination, it's the journey," said American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph clearly was not among the travellers on one of more than 350 cancelled or 1,400 delayed flights after a worldwide tech outage caused by an update to Crowdstrike's "Falcon Sensor" software in July of 2023. U.S. airlines carried nearly 863 million travellers in 2023, with Canadian carriers accounting for another 150 million, many of whom experienced lost luggage, flight delays, cancellations, or were bumped off their flights. It's unclear how many of them were compensated for these inconveniences. Suffice it to say, posting a crabby rant on social media might temporarily soothe anger, but it won't put wasted money back in pockets. Money.ca shares what to know in order to be compensated for the three most common air travel headaches. Bags elected to go on a vacay without you? Check off the following: If you expect a large payout, think again. Tariffs (air carrier contracts) limit the compensation amounts for "loss of, damage to, or the delay in delivery of baggage or other personal property." In the case of Air Canada, the maximum payout is $1,500 per passenger in the currency of the country where the baggage was processed. To raise that limit, purchase a Declaration of Higher Value for each leg of the trip. The charge is $0.50 for each $100, in which case the payout limit is $2,500. For Delta Air Lines, passengers are entitled to up to $3,800 in baggage compensation, though how much you'll receive depends on your flight. Delta will pay up to $2,080 for delayed, lost, and damaged baggage for international travellers, almost half of what U.S. domestic passengers can claim. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Different air carriers and jurisdictions have their own compensation policies when flights are delayed or cancelled. For example, under European Union rules, passengers may receive up to 600 Euros, even when travelling on a non-EU carrier. Similarly, the DOT states that travellers are entitled to a refund "if the airline cancelled a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel." However, US rules regarding delays are complicated. Some air carriers, such as Air Canada, do not guarantee their flight schedules. They're also not liable for cancellations or changes due to "force majeure" such as weather conditions or labour disruptions. If the delay is overnight, only out-of-town passengers will be offered hotel accommodation. Nevertheless, many airlines do offer some compensation for the inconvenience. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. In terms of cash compensation, what you'll get can differ significantly based on things like departure location, time, carrier, and ticket class. The DOT offers a helpful delay and cancellations dashboard designed to keep travellers informed about their compensation rights. The dashboard is particularly helpful because, as the DOT states on its website, "whether you are entitled to a refund depends on a lot of factors—such as the length of the delay, the length of the flight, and your particular circumstances." The Canadian Transportation Agency is proposing air passenger protection regulations that guarantee financial compensation to travellers experiencing flight delays and cancellations, with the level of compensation varying depending on the situation and how much control the air carrier had. The proposed regulations include the following: The airline is obligated to complete the passenger's itinerary. If the new ticket is for a lower class of service, the air carrier would have to refund the cost difference; if the booking is in a higher class of service, passengers cannot be charged extra. If the passenger declines the ticket, the airline must give a full refund, in addition to the prescribed compensation. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. To qualify, you must check-in by the stated deadline, which on international flights can be up to 3 hours ahead. Keep in mind that if you accept the cash, you are no longer entitled to any further compensation, nor are you guaranteed to be rebooked on a direct flight or similar type of seat. Don't be too quick to give up your boarding pass. Negotiate for the best compensation deal that would include cash, food and hotel vouchers, flight upgrade, lounge passes, as well as mileage points. But avoid being too greedy—if the gate attendant is requesting volunteers and you wait too long, you'll miss the offer. According to Air Canada's tariff, if a passenger is involuntarily bumped, they'll receive $200, in cash or bank draft, for up to a two-hour delay; $400 for a 2-6 hours delay; and $800 if the delay is over six hours. (Air Canada was forced to raise its payouts in 2013 due to passenger complaints.) The new rules would raise the payout significantly: $900 for up to six hours; $1,800 for 6-9; and $2,400 for more than nine hours, all to be paid within 48 hours. Statistically speaking, Delta Airlines is the carrier most likely to bump. A few years ago, Delta raised its payout maximum to $9,950, while United Airlines tops out at $10,000. Stock market today: Wall Street slips to a rare back-to-back loss

After losing 7-2 to the worst team in the Pacific Division on Monday, the Kings will pivot straight into Wednesday’s showdown with the NHL’s best club. The Winnipeg Jets just moved to 18-4-0 with a resounding 4-1 win over another early-season powerhouse, the Minnesota Wild. Now, Winnipeg’s trip south will signify a visit from some former Kings cohorts: Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo and Rasmus Kupari, all of whom became Jets as a result of the disastrous Pierre-Luc Dubois trade . Vilardi has continued to be one of the top net-front presences in the NHL on the power play as well as a threat from the slot offensively, while providing outstanding defense and winning 63.6% of his faceoffs this season. Iafallo has emerged as a solid second-unit contributor for Winnipeg and scored two goals against Minnesota, including one with the extra man that was his 100th career tally, while Kupari recorded an assist. They’ve operated behind the team’s top-five scorers – Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Nikolaj Ehlers, Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk – who have combined for 115 points in 22 games. During last season’s only meeting in Los Angeles, Vilardi scored a career-high four points to match the contributions of then-linemate Ehlers as the Jets turned a two-goal deficit into a comfortable win by way of five unanswered goals. That was part of a stretch of 34 straight games in which Winnipeg and its top goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, allowed three goals or fewer. This season, more feats have followed as the Jets have compiled the NHL’s best points total, points percentage, goal differential, power-play conversion rate, goals-against average and save percentage, all while scoring the most goals of any team. They’ve had two winning streaks of seven or more games in just 22 matches. While the Jets soared, the Kings remained in a holding pattern. They appeared to have four winnable games heading into this clash with the league’s top team, but continued their one-step-forward-one-step-back pattern by splitting bouts with Buffalo , Detroit , Seattle and San Jose. They’ve won consecutive games three times this season, but never more than two in a row. Their latest disappointment saw them fall to 0-2-0 in San Jose in 2024-25, losing to the lottery-bound Sharks on Monday in a game that was tied at the second intermission. No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini got the third-period party started with a goal for San Jose and later drew a penalty before scoring a second goal, five-on-three. Kings coach Jim Hiller said that no one should “disrespect” San Jose – which had dropped six of seven decisions entering the contest – but finally deemed an effort, in this case a five-goals-allowed final frame, to be “unacceptable.” Related Articles “That’s not a team that’s trying to tank, that’s a good hockey team, strong players, real good back end. We played them three times, they beat us twice, we barely beat them in the one at home,” Hiller said. “We completely fell apart in the third period. That’s just unacceptable, what happened in the third.” Anže Kopitar’s hand stayed hot with a goal and an assist to match the two points of linemate Adrian Kempe. Kempe has notched 13 points over his past 12 games while Kopitar has 16 points across those same dozen contests, putting the 37-year-old on track to top his best single-season total of 92 points from the 2017-18 season. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — If the Giants’ franchise-record 10th straight loss proved anything, it’s that New York could use a young franchise quarterback. Rookie Michael Penix Jr. showed what a young QB can do on Sunday against the Giants, who need to learn from it. The No. 8 overall pick in the draft, Penix played a nearly flawless game in his first career start to help the Falcons thrash the woeful Giants 34-7 in their best performance in weeks. The Giants gambled in 2019 that Daniel Jones would be their franchise QB and it really never panned out. The one exception was the 2022 season, when the No. 6 overall pick had a career year and led New York to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff berth in the first season after Joe Schoen was hired as general manager and Brian Daboll was named coach. The Giants even won a playoff game. With the release of Jones last month, the Giants (2-13) are now a team without a quarterback who can perform at the level required of an NFL starter. Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock have split the last four starts but neither has provided much of a spark for the league’s worst offense. Lock handed the Falcons the game with two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. To turn things around next season, the Giants must find a quarterback. “I’d say it’s very important,” Daboll said Monday. New York is going to have a high pick in the draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, in late April. It could even be the No. 1 overall selection. Choosing the right quarterback is going to be hard. There isn’t a can’t-miss choice in 2025 draft and forcing one early would be a mistake. Unless the Giants are convinced that Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe or someone else is the next franchise player, they have have so many needs that it would be better to wheel and deal and fill as many holes as possible. Even if the Giants take a quarterback in the second round, there’s bound to be someone available who has a chance to be better than what they have now. What’s working The calendar. The season ends in less than two weeks. What needs help The franchise is in disarray, and a shakeup appears likely. Daboll’s future as the coach is not bright, considering the current skid and two straight losing seasons. Schoen has to share the blame and so do co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, who hired the GM and coach. Stock up LB Darius Muasau. The sixth-round draft pick out of UCLA has started the last three games since Bobby Okereke (back) was hurt and eventually put on injured reserve last week. Muasau had 11 tackles Sunday along with a quarterback hit and a tackle for a loss. He made the defensive calls after LB Micah McFadden left with a neck injury. Stock down Lock. In his starts, Lock has had three interceptions returned for touchdowns. He also lost a fumble on a strip-sack at Atlanta. Lock sustained a shoulder injury during the game and had an MRI on Monday. Injuries Besides Lock and McFadden, S Jason Pinnock (eye) also left the game. C John Michael Schmitz and RB Tyrone Tracy were evaluated for ankle injuries on Monday. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 1 — Thanks to the Raiders’ victory over the Jaguars, the Giants will have the No. 1 overall pick in the draft with two more losses. Next steps For the ninth and final time, the Giants will try to find a way to win at MetLife Stadium. New York is 0-8 heading into Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Its only other winless season at home was in 1974 when New York played at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut, while Giants Stadium was being built. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Advertisement AdvertisementOut There: Spirit of Christmas lives in our hearts and in our apps
