The ruling party pushed through a constitutional reform in September to make all federal judges stand for election, replacing the system where court employees and lawyers mainly move up through the ranks. Current court employees and their supporters have staged dozens of demonstrations against the reforms, calling them part of a ruling-party campaign to weaken checks and balances and eliminate independent regulatory and oversight bodies. Now, candidates for Supreme Court seats and federal judgeships need only a law degree, a grade point average of 3.2, “five years of professional experience” and five letters of recommendation from neighbors or friends. That, and some luck in the final drawing. Officials rejected criticism that has called the process rushed or amateurish for the often highly technical posts that can hear cases including intellectual property, organized crime and Constitutional law. “The results have been spectacular,” said Arturo Zaldivar, a top advisor to President Claudia Sheinbaum. According to the plan, evaluation committees will have just over a month to review thousands of resumes and whittle the field to about 10 candidates or less for each for the 881 judgeships and nine seats on the Supreme Court. Then 1,793 names chosen at random from those selected will appear on the ballot on June 1. But finding the breath of Maria Callas was enough to bring things out of Jolie that she didn’t even know were in her. “All of us, we really don’t realize where things land in our body over a lifetime of different experiences and where we hold it to protect ourselves,” Jolie said in a recent interview. “We hold it in our stomachs. We hold it in our chest. We breathe from a different place when we’re nervous or we’re sad. “The first few weeks were the hardest because my body had to open and I had to breathe again,” she adds. “And that was a discovery of how much I wasn’t.” In Pablo Larraín’s “Maria,” which Netflix released in theaters Wednesday before it begins streaming on Dec. 11, Jolie gives, if not the performance of her career, then certainly of her last decade. Beginning with 2010’s “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” Jolie has spent recent years directing films while prioritizing raising her six children. “So my choices for quite a few years were whatever was smart financially and short. I worked very little the last eight years,” says Jolie. “And I was kind of drained. I couldn’t for a while.” But her youngest kids are now 16. And for the first time in years, Jolie is back in the spotlight, in full movie-star mode. Her commanding performance in “Maria” seems assured of bringing Jolie her third Oscar nomination. (She won supporting actress in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted.”) For an actress whose filmography might lack a signature movie, “Maria” may be Jolie's defining role. Jolie's oldest children, Maddox and Pax, worked on the set of the film. There, they saw a version of their mother they hadn't seen before. “They had certainly seen me sad in my life. Spending much of her time in her grand Paris apartment, Callas hasn’t sung publicly in years; she’s lost her voice. Imprisoned by the myth she’s created, Callas is redefining herself and her voice. An instructor tells her he wants to hear “Callas, not Maria." The movie, of course, is more concerned with Maria. It’s Larrain’s third portrait of 20th century female icon, following “Jackie” (with Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy) and “Spencer” (with Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana). As Callas, Jolie is wonderfully regal — a self-possessed diva who deliciously, in lines penned by screenwriter Steven Knight, spouts lines like: “I took liberties all my life and the world took liberties with me.” Asked if she identified with that line, Jolie answered, “Yeah, yeah.” Then she took a long pause. “I’m sure people will read a lot into this and there’s probably a lot I could say but don’t want to feed into,” Jolie eventually continues. “I know she was a public person because she loved her work. And I’m a public person because I love my work, not because I like being public. I think some people are more comfortable with a public life, and I’ve never been fully comfortable with it.” When Larraín first approached Jolie about the role, he screened “Spencer” for her. That film, like “Jackie” and “Maria,” eschews a biopic approach to instead intimately focus on a specific moment of crisis. Larraín was convinced Jolie was meant for the role. “I felt she could have that magnetism,” Larraín says. “The enigmatic diva that’s come to a point in her life where she has to take control of her life again. But the weight of her experience, of her music, of her singing, everything, is on her back. And she carries that. It’s someone who’s already loaded with a life that’s been intense.” “There’s a loneliness that we both share,” Jolie says. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think people can be alone and lonely sometimes, and that can be part of who they are.” Larraín, the Chilean filmmaker, grew up in Santiago going to the opera, and he has long yearned to bring its full power and majesty to a movie. In Callas, he heard something that transfixed him. “I hear something near perfection, but at the same time, it’s something that’s about to be destroyed,” Larraín says. “So it’s as fragile and as strong as possible. It lives in both extremes. That’s why it’s so moving. I hear a voice that’s about to be broken, but it doesn’t.” In Callas’ less perfect moments singing in the film, Larraín fuses archival recordings of Callas with Jolie’s own voice. Some mix of the two runs throughout “Maria.” “Early in the process,” Jolie says, “I discovered that you can’t fake-sing opera.” Jolie has said she never sang before, not even karaoke. But the experience has left her with a newfound appreciation of opera and its healing properties. “I wonder if it’s something you lean into as you get older,” Jolie says. “Maybe your depth of pain is bigger, your depth of loss is bigger, and that sound in opera meets that, the enormity of it.” If Larraín’s approach to “Maria” is predicated on an unknowingness, he's inclined to say something similar about his star. “Because of media and social media, some people might think that they know a lot about Angelina,” he says. “Maria, I read nine biographies of her. I saw everything. I read every interview. I made this movie. But I don’t think I would be capable of telling you who she was us. So if there’s an element in common, it’s that. They carry an enormous amount of mystery. Even if you think that you know them, you don’t.” Whether “Maria” means more acting in the future for Jolie, she's not sure. “There's not a clear map,” she says. Like every team in the National Hockey League, the Vancouver Canucks have played their final game before the short holiday break. Per the AHL transactions page , the Canucks have papered down forwards Phillip Di Giuseppe , Max Sasson , and Linus Karlsson bringing their roster down a minimum of 18 skaters and two goalies. The roster moves will give Vancouver a relatively large window of salary cap relief despite all three players earning below $900K on their current contracts. The Canucks don’t play until Saturday when they take on the Seattle Kraken meaning all three players will likely be recalled then. The veteran Di Giuseppe played in three games for Vancouver during his recent call-up from December 17th to today, tallying two assists and 12 hits while averaging 12:39 of ice time. He’ll likely spend more time on the Canucks roster for the rest of the season after returning from an injury earlier in the year. Di Giuseppe is in the final season of a two-year, $1.55MM agreement signed with Vancouver and can bring quality defensive play toward the bottom of the lineup. Sasson, the second forward included in today’s transaction, is starting to rack up playing time in the NHL. The former Western Michigan University standout has scored one goal and five points in 12 games for the Canucks this season and has seen his ice time climb to or near 13 minutes in three of his last four games. There’s a legitimate chance his playing days in the AHL are over for the foreseeable future unless Vancouver makes a notable outside addition to their bottom six. Karlsson also sustained an early-season injury keeping him out of the lineup for both Vancouver and the Abbotsford Canucks for much of the 2024-25 regular season. He’s gotten off to a hot start in Abbotsford scoring five goals and six points in seven games but he failed to find the scoresheet during his pair of contests in the NHL. He’s an interesting offensive weapon Vancouver could toy with toward the bottom of their forward grouping given that Karlsson is only a year removed from scoring 23 goals and 60 points in 60 AHL games. Starting January 2025, the U.S. Outbound Investment Security Program (OISP) will require U.S. investors to report or avoid certain technology investments in China, Hong Kong, and Macau. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and U.S.-registered entities must comply with the OISP, and prevent their foreign branches and subsidiaries from engaging in prohibited transactions. The OISP targets specific investment types, including acquisitions, loans, joint ventures, and certain fund interests, especially if they involve critical technologies. U.S. investors must submit notifications for relevant transactions within 30 days of completion, detailing transaction parties, rationale, and post-transaction plans. Violations can lead to civil and criminal penalties, including fines and potential transaction nullification. Because the OISP program is new, as is the Treasury office responsible for implementing and enforcing the regulations, we expect iterative and changing guidance and interpretations as the program matures and evolves. Accordingly, it is important for investors and targets of investment to seek current and refreshed advice for any proposed transactions they may wish to undertake. On Oct. 28, 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a final rule implementing President Biden’s Executive Order 14105 , “Addressing United States Investments in Certain National Security Technologies and Products in Countries of Concern.” Effective Jan. 2, 2025, the Outbound Investment Security Program (OISP) imposes new notification requirements and prohibitions on U.S. persons making certain types of investments in “countries of concern” (currently defined to include China, Hong Kong, and Macau). The OISP covers investments in three categories of technologies: semiconductors and microelectronics; quantum information technologies; and artificial intelligence. Treasury’s Office of Investment Security will administer the OISP. While the United States has long regulated inbound foreign investment through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) process, the OISP is the first time the United States has established a broad framework to regulate U.S. investment in other countries. Horan from Raleigh to Greensboro on Friday. The procession will begin at approximately 4:30 p.m., and police and other authorities will be stationed in tribute to Horan on overpasses along the route on Interstate 40 West into Guilford County. The cavalcade will then proceed to Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home at 6000 W. Gate City Blvd. The public is asked not to park along the interstate or other highways along the route, stop traffic or put themselves in danger near traffic routes. Police officials also ask that the public not gather at Hanes-Lineberry, as the family has requested privacy on Friday. Funeral arrangements for Horan had not been completed late Thursday. Horan, a sworn officer with Greensboro Police since 2018 and an 18-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard, was shot and killed on Monday at the Food Lion at 4709 Lawndale Drive. He had responded to a report of an armed suspicious man inside the store. Horan According to the police and investigators with the State Bureau of Investigation, Horan, 44, and suspect Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, of Greensboro, struggled inside the store before Horan was shot about 11 a.m. Food Lion employees hand a bouquet of flowers to a driver passing through the parking lot of the store on Lawndale Avenue in Greensboro on Tuesday. Police officer Michael Horan was shot and killed inside the store on Monday. McMillian was arrested about 1 p.m. Monday near the border of Sampson and Duplin counties after a multi-county chase east from Greensboro and is charged with first-degree murder. Horan's death marks the second death of a Greensboro officer in less than one year. Sgt. Dale Nix, who was off-duty at the time, was shot and killed on Dec. 30 while attempting to stop a theft at Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road in Greensboro. Donations to the family of Horan have streamed in steadily since Monday on the Help for Heroes fundraising site. With a goal of $120,000, the site had already garnered more than $110,000 by 3 p.m. Thursday. Judge Michelle Fletcher presided and read McMillian's charges to him and appointed him a defense attorney from the state Capital Defender's Office. McMillian will remain in the Guilford County Detention Center without bond and will next appear in the court on March 20, court officials said. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole. According to a social media post by a customer of Instacart, the online grocery service, McMillian was an InstaCart worker who had signed up to handle her order at the Food Lion less than a half-hour before the shooting. She said she recognized McMillian's mugshot the next day when she read about his arrest. It is still unknown why McMillian allegedly had a weapon, what type of gun it was, and who saw it and first reported it. Witness Ramona Miller, 63, of Browns Summit, who was at the Food Lion with her 6-year-old granddaughter, said that before she heard five or six shots fired, she noticed a man who looked like McMillian rushing through grocery aisles as she shopped. She said he pushed other carts aside and kept his hoodie pulled close to his face. Miller, her grandchild, and about 45 other shoppers rushed from the store to safety just after 11 a.m. after hearing gunfire. Once she reached her car at about 11:04 a.m., Miller noticed two parked police cars in the Food Lion lot — one on each side. She said the cars must have already been in place before the shooting.
