Georgia Republicans recommend further law to restrict transgender women's participation in sportsAfter acquiring the Arcadium Lithium operations, mining company Rio Tinto has now announced a US$2.5 billion investment to expand lithium carbonate production at its Rincón de Salta project. This will be the Anglo-Australian company’s first commercial-scale operation, and obtained its Environmental Impact Declaration a year ago. The investment decision, which will be presented for Argentina’s RIGI large investment regime, demonstrates “the company’s commitment to establishing a first-class battery materials portfolio,” Rio Tinto told the Herald ’s sister title, Energy Report , in a statement. The Rincón project involves the extraction of brine through a series of production wells and processing and effluent facilities, along with its associated infrastructure. The total production capacity is 60,000 tonnes of high-quality lithium carbonate for batteries per year. That figure includes an initial 3,000-tonne plant and a 57,000-tonne expansion plant. The project uses direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology, a process that helps conserve water, reduces effluents, and produces lithium carbonates more consistently than other methods. Rio Tinto Group’s chief executive officer, Jakob Stausholm, welcomed the investment decision. “The attractive long-term outlook for lithium driven by the energy transition supports our investment in Rincón. We are dedicated to developing this world-class resource at a large scale and at the low end of the cost curve. We are also committed to meeting the highest ESG standards, using our advanced technology to halve the amount of water used in the refining process while continuing to strengthen our mutually beneficial partnerships with local communities and the province of Salta,” he said. Rio Tinto buys Arcadium Lithium The mining company announced in October that it had acquired Arcadium Lithium for US$6.7 billion in cash. Globally, Arcadium has 1,300 employees, manages resources in Argentina and Australia, and operates conversion plants in the U.S., China, Japan, and the United Kingdom. It also has production projects in Canada. The sale, which is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2025, includes all of Arcadium’s operations in Argentina: the Fénix and Sal de Vida projects in Catamarca, and Olaraoz I and II and Cauchari projects in Jujuy. The Fénix project, owned by Livent before being acquired by Arcadium, currently has a production of 20,000 metric tonnes of lithium carbonate in situ and another 9,000 metric tonnes of lithium chloride in the town of Güemes, an external plant located on the Salta plains. With that acquisition and the decision to expand its own Salar de Rincón plant, there is no doubt that Rio Tinto has a clear goal with lithium for the next decade. “The investment will support Argentina’s current ambition to become one of the world’s leading lithium producers,” the company said. Rio Tinto invests in copper in San Juan Rio Tinto, through its tech subsidiary Nuton, recently confirmed a new US$35 million investment for McEwen Copper’s Los Azules copper project, in the San Juan town of Calingasta. With the funds from the acquisition, the world’s second-largest mining company will boost work on the feasibility study for the San Juan copper project, which is expected to be published in the first half of 2025. Michael “Mike” Meding, Vice President of McEwen Copper and General Manager of the Los Azules project, told Energy Report that with this purchase, Nuton has now invested US$100 million, confirming the growing value of the initiative. “This fourth investment by Rio Tinto is an expression of confidence in the project, its leadership, and development, in a project that, measured in resources (according to Mining Intelligence), is the eighth largest in the world in terms of resources,” Meding said. BP Marsh chairman Brian Marsh is also 83, as sharp as a tack, and still arrives for work between 7am and 7.15am four days a week. His dedication pays dividends, not just for him, as a 38 per cent shareholder, but to every investor in the business. BP Marsh invests in up-and-coming insurance firms, acquiring small stakes for up to £5 million apiece, helping these companies to grow and reaping the benefits when they are sold to larger players. Marsh has spent almost 60 years in the insurance industry and his father was in the market before him, working on the old Lloyd's of London floor in the City. Networks are important in this industry and, with a new generation of experienced staffers, BP Marsh is well known for helping young businesses to prosper and grow. Recent transactions prove the point. In 2019, BP Marsh bought a 30 per cent stake in new broking firm Lilley Plummer Risks for £1 million, £700,000 was repaid in 2023, and late last month, Marsh sold its holding for £21.65 million. Earlier this year, the group completed another sale, this time for £44 million after an initial investment of just over £4 million seven years ago. Today, BP Marsh has around £100 million on its balance sheet and has just told investors that it will be increasing annual dividend payments from £4 million to £5 million in 2026 and 2027, equivalent to 13.4p a share a year. Marsh does not take on insurance risk himself. Instead, his firm focuses on middle-men, such as brokers and underwriting agencies. That means the company is less vulnerable to losses from events such as Hurricane Helene and Milton, which devastated parts of the United States earlier this year. Marsh's portfolio could even benefit from these catastrophes, if they provoke an increase in commercial insurance prices. Midas verdict: Midas recommended BP Marsh in June 2023, when the shares were £3.76. They have almost doubled since then to £7. Billie Eilish is that big of a deal. When the Grammy and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter brings “Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour” to San Jose for two sold-out shows Tuesday and Wednesday, fans will find only vegan and vegetarian options, in line with Eilish’s advocacy for plant-based diets. So what does that mean? Vegan hot dogs, chicken tenders and pizza will be on the menus, along with popcorn, pretzels and chips and salsa. Vegan Mob will be offering vegan soul food options; Arteaga’s will be making its burritos and tacos with sofritas or veggies and serving them with vegan cheese and sour cream; and Sushi Confidential will be offering veggie rolls, teriyaki veggie bowls and fried tofu for at least Tuesday night. Even the soft serve ice cream at Sugar + Ice will be made out of oat milk. And, the suites will get in on the action, too, by serving a non-meat menu with vegan chicken tenders, Impossible sliders and a crudite with hummus offered along with vegan versions of ranch dip, aioli and ketchup. SAP Center regularly has some vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, but this is believed to be the first time the arena has changed its entire menu for an artist. Dave Cortese can’t believe the transit agency has agreed to transfer its entire retired fleet — 90 gallery cars and 19 diesel locomotives — to Lima, Peru after finally getting its entire fleet electrified this fall. “This is no way to run a railroad by taking the diesel off California’s carbon footprint then putting it right back on in Peru. Are we not all fighting to decarbonize the same air?” Cortese, who chairs the state Senate Transportation committee, said in a release. He introduced a bill Monday that states the intent of the Legislature to restrict the resale of decommissioned diesel trains and rolling stock for continued use. Keir Starmer has warned local leaders that he will not hesitate to overrule them if they attempt to “dodge their responsibilities” in approving new homes, amid growing concerns among wildlife groups and councils over his plans for a . The prime minister has placed a pledge to at the heart of his government’s plans. Senior figures in his team are now focused on trying to deliver tangible improvements to the country to make a credible case for re-election. They also want to show he is taking on what they see as vested interests opposing housebuilding. Ministers will this week vow to overhaul planning rules as part of the government’s pledge, handing local mayors and leaders more powers in the process. Speaking to the , however, the prime minister said more ­powers meant “more responsibilities” and that he would not allow local leaders to stand in the way of his building overhaul. “With our reforms, we’re pushing power back into communities so they can build their own futures and make their own decisions about what’s best for them,” he said. “With our new rules, mayors will have greater planning authority to make decisions that boost local growth and housebuilding so communities can shape their own future. “But where local leaders dodge their responsibilities for deciding where and how homes should be built, and needlessly oppose developments that would provide good homes, we won’t be afraid to step in. More powers, more responsibilities.” Starmer’s remarks come in the wake of his “ ” speech last week in which his team attempted to hone the government’s programme into more accessible targets designed to focus attention in Whitehall. They should be supported, not vilified. We want to work with you to speed up planning. We need ambitious reform to ensure the planning system works better for nature, too. But deregulation is not the answer.” Starmer, however, insisted that “outdated planning laws” had to be tackled. “We’re going to rebuild this nation from the ground up, but we can’t do that without reform,” he said. “It is central to this government’s agenda. Starting with sweeping changes to the national planning policy framework which will begin to remove the obstacles towards this government’s goal of building 1.5m houses in this parliament. That’s an ambitious goal – so we can’t let anything slow us down. “It’s common sense – if we want good houses, transport and energy supplies, we have to build them. There is no other way. To anyone willing to engage in finding practical, workable solutions and reforms – we will work in partnership with you. “But the government is not afraid to take on vested interests and break down the barriers that prevent action while working people are paying the price. In the middle of these crises are established nonprofits, everyday individuals and mutual aid groups — all seeking your dollars to make a difference. With no shortage of worthy causes and the rise of new giving technologies, how should you donate? The choices can be immobilizing. Many people value conventional charities but others — Gen Z and millennials, as well as the unmarried and less religious, according to 2021 research by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy — like to crowdfund by pooling donations online for folks in dire circumstances. “It’s really: what is the right type of support that either an organization or a community or an individual needs?” said Bloomerang Chief Customer Officer Todd Baylis, who co-founded the platform Qgiv to help nonprofits fundraise online. “And being able to tailor that to the individual giver.” Here are some questions worth considering. It might come down to whether you want to make a big difference for one person or help seed large-scale change. Tiltify is a technology platform that helps nonprofits and individual crowdfunders raise money. If donors want to ensure food gets to communities recovering from disasters, Tiltify CEO Michael Wasserman says a nonprofit contribution is probably best, as established organizations already have distribution pipelines and expertise. The online sites are relatively unregulated, leaving the responsibility for protection up to donors and the platforms themselves. In GoFundMe’s case, donations can be refunded up to one year after they are made. The company advises that organizers identify themselves and their beneficiaries, and specify their plans for spending contributions. Online users mistakenly associate high donation numbers with credibility, van Teunenbroek said. She said risk is better mitigated by making sure the project’s description is detailed. “For a donor, if you prefer more certainty, then traditional nonprofits are probably better because they have an established reputation,” she said. ALSAC CEO Rick Shadyac said his charity works hard to make donors feel confident that their money is supporting the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: improving pediatric cancer survival rates worldwide by covering the costs of care and researching treatments. He urges people to give regardless of the medium and to always look for reputable causes. Bonafide charities, he said, bring “greater degrees of confidence” while crowdfunding requires more “due diligence.” Still, he sees room for both.
