FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Let’s begin this ending with the right story. There are plenty who don’t get it right. The right story lends direction and purpose for what Jim Larrañaga was about as he resigns and begins where everything did for him, which was with his Miami basketball team around him. So, you could tell about him dancing in the locker room — shimmying, really, in that old-school, elbows-akimbo manner he did — after beating Houston as players clapped after reaching the Final Four just 20 months ago. You could tell about meeting his players as they came out of the game, one by one, for a quick handshake or hug in the spring of 2022 as they lost in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. But here’s the better story as he leaves a life of coaching basketball: Each practice, each year, for decades, Larrañaga had signs propped up against chairs lining the baseline for players to see as the word. “The Ten Commitments,’’ he called them, and each one spoke of a different angle to his basketball philosophy. “We will set ourselves defensively every time,’’ read No. 1. “We will share the ball,’’ read No. 7. Then, for weekend practices, the Ten Commitments were replaced by signs of motivational author Stephen Covey’s ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.’ “Seek first to understand, then to be understood,’’ read No. 7. Isaiah Wong, who’s now with the Charlotte Hornets, could recite The Ten Commitments and Covey’s Seven Habits after being in Larrañaga’s program for four years. He developed from a role-playing freshman in that time to the ACC Player of the Year. Something wasn’t right anymore for Larrañaga, 75, who resigned suddenly Thursday. The 4-8 record spoke of it. But so did what a Miami official said last week while I watched a practice: His players might know The Ten Commitments but probably didn’t know the Seven Daily Habits just yet. That’s because 10 of them just came through the transfer portal. They hadn’t been around long enough. The portal and its real-life bedfellow in name, image and likeness money has changed more than college sports. It’s changing the cast of coaches teaching them. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Virginia’s Tony Bennett, Villanova’s Jay Wright — some titans of the games are leaving. Now, Larrañaga, too. The new game isn’t for him. He told of a player’s agent wanting $1 million for his player. “I said, ‘What?’ he said. “A million dollars to play college basketball?”’ Now he tried to explain it all. “It’s hard to put into words why I’m doing this, ” he said Thursday. “I love the game, love the university. ... But because I love the game and the university that much, I felt, ‘OK, there’s one thing you have to constantly ask yourself: Are you going to give everything you have, the commitment it deserves?' " He said, “I’m exhausted.” He told a story of meeting his team after their Final Four trip in the spring of 2023. Eight said they were transferring. They liked Larrañaga and Miami, too. But they had a chance to make money somewhere else. He showed up for his final press conference in form. No suit and tie. He wore a sweat suit. He’s a coach. He saw himself as a teacher even more. He taught more than dribbling a ball. He taught life. Each day he would give players a daily quote. “Life is about balance,’’ he’d say, talking about not just offense and defense but time management outside the locker room. It was about winning, of course. That meant building an unsteady program, too. When he arrived at Miami in 2011, he took pizzas to dorm rooms and talked at fraternities to invite them to games and tell about the importance of a homecourt advantage. Whether that’s why they began to fill up the student section or winning did the trick is anyone’s guess. But they came. And he built. And, man, will Miami miss him. He was a coach of routine. Most every day for lunch, he’d walk across campus talking to everyday students and order the same strawberry and banana smoothie at a shop. He’d then continue on to a food court to order the same six-inch toasted tuna sub with provolone cheese. He brought a slice of humanity like that to the big-time coaching pressure. A day before leaving for the Final Four, he invited me into a coach’s meeting where they drew up their game plan followed by a team meeting where he addressed the players on strategy. No coach does that. It wasn’t always fun and good games for him. There were a couple of empty Miami years due to an FBI investigation into shoe deals over his and other programs that went nowhere. Last season, he thought he had a team to sustain back-to-back Elite Eight and Final Four seasons but injuries derailed everything. “I was heartbroken,’’ Larrañaga said last week. He didn’t golf, fish or have any hobby beyond coaching basketball. The only thing he did was watch movies with his wife, and he’d incorporate clips from the Last Samurai or Cobra Kai into talks. When Miami led Auburn by a point near the end in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, he trotted out a Mel Gibson line in a timeout huddle from a Braveheart clip they’d all seen. “Are you ready to go to war?” he said. For 44 seasons, he went to basketball war. His career started as a Davidson assistant in 1971 and ended with an overtime loss to Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday. Something wasn’t right anymore. He saw it. “It’s a new world,’’ he said a week ago in his office, talking about the portal and the NIL. It sure feels like a new world around Miami sports now. Larrañaga is gone, and so much of what a good coach should do goes out the door with him. Just as anyone who played for him can tell you. INDIANAPOLIS – When the concept of the NFL’s most dangerous offense is broached, the image that first comes to mind likely depends on the age of the beholder. It could be Dan Marino’s Miami Dolphins or perhaps Kurt Warner’s Los Angeles Rams. Maybe it’s Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts or Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. For the youngest observers, it’s likely Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. Each of those units – no matter the era in which they played – had one thing in common: an explosive passing game that put video game numbers on the stat sheet week in and week out. The Detroit Lions – this year’s highest scoring NFL offense – certainly have that capability. But this is a team that very much reflects the personality of its head coach – former NFL tight end Dan Campbell. In addition to the aerial exploits of quarterback Jared Goff and his fleet of receivers, the Lions (9-1) boast the league’s third-ranked rushing offense. Two players – Jahmyr Gibbs (796 yards, eight touchdowns) and David Montgomery (595 yards, 10 touchdowns) – already have surpassed the 500-yard rushing mark, and Detroit is not afraid to get down in the trenches and bully the opposition when the situation calls for it. “We had a joint practice what, two years ago with them, and I think what stood out is that they are a physical, tough team,” Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “They come in with a mentality. So it starts with that. It comes from their head coach. He's done a great job with that culture. Then you look at their skillset, right? They've got two really good running backs. Their offensive line is – I mean compared to a lot of the great offensive lines that have played. “So up front, they can run the ball. They can protect. The quarterback is playing – I mean, if he has three incompletions in a game, that's a shocker to him. So they're just very effective. They're very efficient. They've got playmakers on the perimeter. ... If they don't score every series, they're upset. So very explosive that way, and it's a great challenge for us.” Indianapolis has won its last two meetings against Mahomes and the Chiefs in large part by being the more physical team on the field. The Colts ran the ball efficiently in both a 2019 victory at Arrowhead Stadium and a 2023 upset at Lucas Oil Stadium. That helped keep the Kansas City offense on the sideline, and the Indianapolis defense made some big plays at opportune times to further limit the damage. That won’t be a simple formula to replicate Sunday against the Lions. Detroit has the fifth-ranked run defense in terms of total yards and is 11th with an average of 4.3 yards allowed per carry. So keeping the ball out of the Lions’ hands will take significant effort. And when Detroit has possession, it’s absolutely lethal. The Lions average 33.6 points per game and have topped the 40-point barrier four times – including two 52-point showings in the past four weeks, against the Colts’ AFC South rivals Tennessee and Jacksonville. Detroit put up a massive 645 yards of total offense last week against the Jaguars, and its 46-point margin of victory marked the third time this year it has won by more than 35 points. This is domination often witnessed in the college game but rarely at the pro level. “Obviously, they play hard for all four quarters,” Indianapolis defensive tackle DeForest Buckner said. “They play really well together, especially offensively. On the offensive line, they do a really good job working with each other, communicating. They’ve got a lot of great skill players. They’ve probably got one of the best running back duos in the league. Obviously, Jared Goff is playing at a very high level. “So, defensively, we’ve got to be on a lot of our keys and our technique. We’ve just got to continue to communicate better and just make sure that everybody, especially in the run game, are in their gaps and their fits.” Left tackle Bernhard Raimann (knee) did not practice again Thursday, increasing the chances Indianapolis will again start three rookies on the offensive line. Right tackle Braden Smith (foot) was upgraded to full participation. Defensive end Tyquan Lewis (elbow) and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (back) were full participants for the second straight day. Wide receiver Josh Downs (calf) and cornerback Kenny Moore II (knee) were added to the report but were full participants Thursday. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was limited with the right shoulder injury that sidelined him last week and there is growing concern about the long-term status of left tackle Trent Williams. Wednesday's practice was not the start to the NFL workweek head coach Kyle Shanahan had hoped after Purdy was unable to bounce back from a shoulder injury in Week 11. Brandon Allen started at Green Bay and the 49ers (5-6) lost 38-10 with the backup-turned-starter committing three turnovers. Williams was reportedly spotted in the locker room with a knee scooter and is experiencing pain walking. He played through an ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks Nov. 17. Defensive end Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) also missed practice Wednesday, leaving the 49ers to spend the holiday plotting to play the Buffalo Bills (9-2) without the three Pro Bowlers again. Ahead of the latest migration figures being published on Thursday, the Conservative leader suggested she was willing to change in her position on the UK’s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). During the Conservative leadership election, Mrs Badenoch said leaving the treaty would not be a “silver bullet” to end high net migration. But in speech in Westminster on Wednesday afternoon, she suggested she was willing to consider leaving the ECHR, a policy championed by her rival for the Tory leadership Robert Jenrick. The Leader of the Opposition described the current immigration system as “broken”, adding: “We have to get the diagnosis right. So we will review every policy, treaty and part of our legal framework – including the ECHR and the Human Rights Act.” The ECHR is key to UK human rights law, and has been used to halt attempts to deport unauthorised migrants from the UK. She also hinted the Tories may need to go further in their approach, telling reporters at the event: “It’s not even the most radical thing that we probably will have to do. “But if we’re going to leave the ECHR, we need to have a plan, not just reforms. There is a lot more that is going on in our immigration system beyond the ECHR.” The Tory leader said there had been a “collective failure of political leaders from all parties over decades” to grasp migration, and owned up to the Conservatives’ part in this.
