In August 2021, when Sneha Saikia, a Delhi-based home chef who is known for her Table for 6 Luncheon invited me to experience Assamese food and talk about food of other Northeastern state, it was quite an enriching experience that helped me understand the new wave of change humble home kitchens were ready to bring in the dynamic commercial food and beverages market. And today, Sneha along with a brigade of many other home chefs across the country are cooking up a storm, bringing the warmth and authenticity of traditional cooking into modern kitchens, celebrating the essence of home food that nourishes both body and soul. Unlike mass-produced meals, these home-cooked dishes are crafted with care, using fresh ingredients, time-honored recipes, and a personal touch that evokes comfort and nostalgia. Home chefs like Nitika Kuthalia, who is a culinarian and Himalayan chef and runs her Instagram page by the handle Pahadipatal, are preserving cultural heritage, showcasing regional flavors and culinary traditions passed down through generations. They not only cater to taste but also focus on health , ensuring balanced and wholesome meals free from artificial additives. In a fast-paced world, home food reminds us of simplicity, love, and the joy of sharing meals with family and friends—making it more than just food, but an experience rich in memories and emotions, and as the year comes to an end, we trace back the journey of these unsung heroes and what the new year holds for them. Achievements The biggest achievement for many home chefs who are running on-invite tables and even home deliveries in 2024 has been the shift from home kitchen to catering services. The word of mouth and authentic flavours by these home chefs have now reached the mass market, where they are having dedicated stalls or sit-down dinner/lunch setup for regional delicacies these chefs offer. Nitika, who is known for her Himachali food, did a catering of 125 Himachali Dham from her home kitchen. and even hosted a food pop-up at ITC Kohinoor, which helped her broaden her horizon in a commercial kitchen setup too. Abhilasha Jain, who runs her business called Marwadi Khana and expertise in vegetarian Rajasthani food and mithais, hosted Rajasthani three 5-star hotel pop-up and 100+ gathering catering in 2024. And Poushali Mullick, who runs the page called A Pinch of Bong on Instagram, did Bengali food catering for 60 packs in this year, which she is expecting will increase to be in the hundreds in 2025. Challenges "Where there is a will, there is a way", these words of wisdom have helped many home chefs to grow in the post-pandemic times. For Poushali, the biggest challenge has been to manage cooking and promote her work on social media to get more business opportunities. She accepts, "In terms of challenges, I feel balancing between cooking and promoting my work by posting on social media and clicking food shots, is where I lack, but then I guess my food does the talking and even without doing much of promotion I have been mostly occupied with orders, dinner tables, and catering opportunities in 2024." However, I am trying to create a balance and my family is helping me in this regard", she adds. Abhilasha feels that the only challenge her team faced this year had been to adapt the change from a cloud kitchen setup to a massive commercial kitchen setup, where you have to coordinate with a large number of people to execute your menu. Rest, it is always about enjoying what you do and that reflects in the flavours you offer, affirms Abhilasha, who recently did a dedicated Rajasthani cuisine catering for haldi function at a 5-star hotel in Delhi/NCR. Chef's Take Ace chef Anuj Wadhawan, who is currently consulting for several restaurants in India and abroad, believes that home chefs have become true stars in promoting regional cuisines. He explains, "Variety is the spice of life, and while international cuisines are widely available in restaurants and cafes, home chefs are filling a gap by offering authentic Indian dishes that are difficult to include on a commercial menu." He further elaborates, "The popularity of home chefs has also increased in metropolitan cities because people from across the country are residing here and after a while they do miss their authentic regional food , which these home chefs provide with a cosy setup, which helps people reconnect with their roots." Change in Market As per CRISIL's November 2024 data, the cost of a vegetarian thali has increased 7% year-on-year, while the cost of a non-vegetarian thali increased 2% year-on-year. And this shift in price has surely raised concerns for regular diners who love dining out, and that is the reason there are people who are opting out to go for homechefs to either visit their place for a regional food experience or order-in through their social media pages. Pratibha Tripathi, a Gurgaon-resident who lives by herself says that being alone gives me the scope to make impromptu dinner plans, and in 2024, I have made a switch from restaurant to homechef's table, as it is peaceful and you get to experience more personalised attention. Sneha adds, "I recently did a birthday table, where the family opted my house to be their celebration venue over a cafe/restaurant, offering more personalised experience and there is no rush to empty the place." Future File While the market of Delhi/NCR is growing rapidly and according to the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), the food services sector in India is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.1% from 2024 to 2028, the home chefs feel that the market is right for their growth too and all of them are expecting a booming 2025, were sit-down lunches and dinners and more of catering services will come their way. Abhilasha quips, "I am expecting more catering offers at weddings and luxury hotels in 2025, as it will help me and my team push the envelope and offer more in terms of flavours and at the same time help the team to learn management skills at such a larger setup." Poushali, who enjoys inviting people home and offering food in a cosy setup also feels that cooking for a larger audience from her home kitchen is something that she loves to challenge herself and gives her a sense of achievement, when accomplished. Sneha, on the other hand feels that its the time for us (homechefs) to make people understand the value of home cooked food and the variety that Indian regional cuisines offer, and that can happen only when more and more people will experience it and share about it via social media, which has already helped many home chefs to grow with word of mouth. Nitika is looking forward to flourishing her other dynamic of a home chef, where she makes pickles of seasonal fruits and veggies and makes people understand its benefits too. She also offers homemade panjiri, which she is planning to expand in 2025, as it is something that many people don't know, and I want to spread knowledge about it in the coming year. Takeaway Home chefs are redefining the dining experiences and are now making their ways to larger caterings, which is expected to change the catering business model, in terms of quality, stress on lesser-known regional cuisines, and will also provide job opportunities to many housewives, who wish to grow with their cooking skills, but often miss out opportunities due to lack of information, scope, and opportunities. She was delivering the feature address at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology 2024 graduation ceremony held at the Wildey Gymnasium on Saturday night. Husbands said the world was undergoing a fourth industrial revolution centred around new technological advancements and it was important for the nation’s youth to be exposed to these new technologies and carry the island forward. “You have emerged into a world in which there is the fourth industrial revolution; it is here disrupting all technologies and processes. At its heart is the digital revolution and this ushers in new ways to do new things and new ways of doing old things,” she said. “Digital technology must be understood, digital technology must be mastered and then digital technology must be integrated into the Barbadian landscape and into the skill sets of our people, hence the necessity of SJPI’s mission to produce skilled and innovative graduates through competency based training and the promotion of lifelong learning.” You Might Be Interested In Ross University opens Barbados campus UWI supports innovation for regional growth St George Secondary closed next week The minister said the vocational institution therefore had a significant role to play in ensuring young people were well equipped and prepared for the new world of work. “The work of SJPI is essential to the capacity of Barbados to continue to form enterprises which can attract business from a sophisticated global environment. If we are going to attract new investment, that will bring jobs that pay well, that provide Barbadians with the opportunity to live a good life. It is important that we build the skill sets of all of our citizens because it is for those skills that those businesses will make a determination that they will establish business in Barbados. “So you are important to that process, investing in you and investing in your skills is what will help us to generate that type of economic growth that guarantees all of you an opportunity to live that best life by providing a new generation of the Barbadian workforce with the ability to perform to a global standard in technical and vocational skills. And in so doing, the SJPI pursues its vision to be a global centre of excellence for technological and vocational education.” Additionally, Husbands told the graduates that they will need more than certificates and other qualifications to be successful in their careers. She told them that good moral standing will take them far and positive characters reflecting Barbadian culture will make them stand out as global citizens. “We also want to make sure that we send you forth in such a way that you demonstrate to the world the core values which govern this esteemed establishment. Those values are integrity, accountability, credibility, excellence, innovation, professionalism, and increasing value. And why are these important? People in the world judge you first of all, by how you look, by how you speak and then how you act and people in the world want to engage persons, they can trust. “You will be trusted if people feel you are comfortable that you will stand and act truthfully that you are disciplined, that no matter what, your word can be relied on to execute a task, that you will act fairly with others, that you will be objective in your views and that you will conduct yourself in a way that allows them to feel safe around you and to trust you and having sent you forth with a skill set, it was necessary for us to ensure that we also help you to understand these values at the SJPI and encourage you to integrate them into your way of living, into your way of acting because this is how you will not only get an opportunity, secure an opportunity but be able to use each opportunity to move on to a higher one because your reputation will go before you and you will be in high demand,” she said. Sharia Hall, who earned a diploma distinction in office administration was the valedictorian. During her address, she said that this milestone was an important one and although the journey to securing accreditation was difficult, she congratulated her fellow graduates for persevering and not giving up. She shared her experience pursuing her qualification. “For me excelling in school wasn’t always a given. I faced moments of frustration or even failure that made me question if I could succeed. There were times when balancing school, family and personal struggles felt overwhelming. The fear of failure and disappointing those I cared about the most seemed to overpower everything else. But it was in those moments that I learned what excelling purely means. “Excelling in school is often seen as a result of natural talent but what I’ve learned is that it’s about so much more. It’s not about perfection. It’s about perseverance, it’s about showing up every day even when it feels impossible,” she said. Close to 300 students graduated from the institution. Hall and two other students-Rynell Weekes and Jenita Clarke- received special wards for their academic performance. The theme of the graduation ceremony was: Embracing Technology, Empowering the Future. (SZB)

TORONTO - CBC is restoring its live New Year’s Eve celebration. A year after the national broadcaster cancelled the 2024 countdown due to “financial pressures,” it says the special event is back on the TV schedule to mark the dawn of 2025. Festivities begin Dec. 31 with the one-hour “22 Minutes New Year’s Eve Pregame Special,” a satirical reflection on the events of 2024 with the cast of the political comedy series “This Hour Has 22 Minutes.” It will be followed by “Canada Live! Countdown 2025,” a special hosted by news anchor Adrienne Arsenault and singer Jann Arden broadcasting live from Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, and anchor Ian Hanomansing and comedian Ali Hassan at Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Garden. A representative for the CBC says the coast-to-coast show will feature reporters at more than a dozen community events across the country while a countdown to the new year will take place in each of the six time zones. Throughout the seven-and-a-half-hour program, “many Canadian celebrity guests” will appear in live and pre-taped messages. “Canada Live! Countdown 2025” begins at 8 p.m. ET on CBC News Network and CBC Gem with CBC-TV and CBC Radio picking up the feed at 9 p.m. in local markets. Last year, the CBC replaced its live New Year’s Eve programming with a taped Just For Laughs special hosted by comedian Mae Martin. That left Canadians without a homegrown countdown on any of the major networks, which sparked blowback on social media from some viewers. The CBC began its annual specials in 2017 to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial year. Some of the more recent broadcasts were hosted by comedian Rick Mercer and featured fireworks and musical performances in key cities. But when CBC paused those plans last year, it said the show had become “increasingly expensive to produce.” The decision to sideline the program was made shortly after members of Parliament summoned outgoing CBC president Catherine Tait to testify about job cuts and her refusal to rule out bonuses for CBC executives. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 12, 2024.

NoneTop diplomats from numerous Western and Arab nations will land in Jordan over the weekend to attend a Syria crisis summit, following the ouster of longtime dictator Bashar Assad, Amman's foreign ministry announced Thursday. The Saturday gathering "to discuss developments in Syria" will include foreign ministers from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Qatar. They will also convene with their Turkish and U.S. counterparts, the EU's foreign policy chief and the U.N. envoy for Syria, the statement said. Opposition forces toppled Assad following a 12-day lightning offensive that marked one of the biggest turning points for the Middle East in generations, ending more than 50 years of brutal rule by the Assad family. The talks in the Red Sea city of Aqaba aim "to support an inclusive, Syrian-led political process consistent with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254," the statement added. The primary objective is "to establish a transitional framework that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people and seeks to rebuild state institutions, safeguard Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and ensure security, stability, and the rights of all citizens." The summit would follow U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visits to Jordan and Türkiye as part of a regional tour to discuss the situation in Syria. Blinken flew from the Jordanian Red Sea resort of Aqaba to Ankara on Thursday and was received by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . He is expected to hold talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, on Friday. Both Türkiye and the U.S. have said they wanted the new Syrian administration to be inclusive and for Syrians to determine their own future. Türkiye was expected to put heavy emphasis on its security concerns in Syria, where it has been fighting the PKK terrorist group wing YPG , which is backed by Washington under the guise of a fight against the Daesh terrorist group. Later on Thursday, Türkiye's Foreign Ministry appointed a temporary charge d'affaires to its embassy in Damascus, Anadolu Agency reported. Türkiye closed its embassy in late March 2012, a year after Syria's civil war began, due to the deteriorating security situation amid calls by the Turkish government for Assad to step down.

ATLANTA (AP) — President Joe Biden's administration announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Energy will make a $6.6 billion loan to Rivian Automotive to build a factory in Georgia that had stalled as the startup electric vehicle maker struggled to become profitable. It's unclear whether the administration can complete the loan before Donald Trump becomes president again in less than two months, or whether the Trump administration might try to claw the money back. Trump previously vowed to end federal electric vehicle tax credits , which are worth up to $7,500 for new zero-emission vehicles and $4,000 for used ones. Rivian made a splash when it went public and began producing large electric R1 SUVs, pickup trucks and delivery vans at a former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois, in 2021. Months later, the California-based company announced it would build a second, larger, $5 billion plant about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Atlanta, near the town of Social Circle. The R1 vehicles cost $70,000 or more. The company plans to produce R2 vehicles, a smaller SUV, in Georgia with lower price tags aimed at a mass market. The first phase of Rivian’s Georgia factory is projected to make 200,000 vehicles a year, with a second phase capable of another 200,000 a year. Eventually, the plant is projected to employ 7,500 workers. But Rivian was unable to meet production and sales targets and rapidly burned through cash. In March, the company said it would pause construction of the Georgia plant. The company said it would begin assembling its R2 SUV in Illinois instead. CEO RJ Scaringe said the move would allow Rivian to start selling the R2 sooner and save $2.25 billion in capital spending. Since then, German automaker Volkswagen AG said in June it would invest $5 billion in Rivian in a joint venture in which Rivian would share software and electrical technology with Volkswagen. The money eased Rivian's cash crunch. Tuesday's announcement throws a lifeline to Rivian's grander plans. The company said its plans to make the R2 and the smaller R3 in Georgia are back on and that production will begin in 2028. “This loan would enable Rivian to more aggressively scale our U.S. manufacturing footprint for our competitively priced R2 and R3 vehicles that emphasize both capability and affordability,” Scaringe said in a statement. The Energy Department said the loan would substantially boost electric vehicles made in the United States and support Biden’s goal of having zero-emission vehicles make up half of all new U.S. sales by 2030. “As one of a few American EV startups with light duty vehicles already on the road, Rivian’s Georgia facility will allow the company to reach production volumes that make its products more cost competitive and accelerate access to international markets,” the department said in a statement. The loan includes $6 billion, plus $600 million in interest that will be rolled into the principal. The money would come from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, which provides low-interest loans to make fuel-efficient vehicles and components. The program has focused mostly on loans to new battery factories for electric vehicles under Biden, but earlier helped finance initial production of the Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf, two pioneering electric vehicles. The loan program, created in 2007, requires a "reasonable prospect of repayment" of the loan. Under Biden, the program has announced deals totaling $33.3 billion, including $9.2 billion for massive battery plants in Tennessee and Kentucky for Ford’s electric vehicles. Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff , who has been a vocal supporter of electric vehicle and solar manufacturing in Georgia, hailed Tuesday's announcement as “yet another historic federal investment in Georgia electric vehicle manufacturing.” Ossoff had asked Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to support the loan in July. “Our federal manufacturing incentives are driving economic development across the state of Georgia,” Ossoff said in a statement. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp says his goal is to make Georgia a center of the electric vehicle industry. But the Republican has had a strained relationship with the Biden administration over its industrial policy, even as some studies have found Georgia has netted more electric vehicle investment than any other state. Kemp has long claimed that manufacturers were picking Georgia before Biden's signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, was passed. Efforts to bring Rivian to Georgia predated the Biden administration and "our shared vision to bring opportunity to Georgia will remain no matter who resides in the White House or what party controls Congress,” Kemp spokesperson Garrison Douglas said Tuesday. The loan to Rivian could rescue one of the Kemp administration's signature economic development projects even as Biden leaves office. That could put Rivian and Kemp in the position of defending the loan if Trump tries to quash it. State and local governments offered Rivian an incentive package worth an estimated $1.5 billion in 2022. Neighbors opposed to development of the Georgia site mounted legal challenges. State and local governments spent around $125 million to buy and prepare the nearly 2,000-acre (810-hectare) site. The state also has completed most of $50 million in roadwork that it pledged. The pause at Rivian contrasts with rapid construction at Hyundai Motor Group’s $7.6 billion electric vehicle and battery complex near Savannah. The Korean automaker said in October that it had begun production in Ellabell, where it plans to eventually employ 8,500. CHICAGO (AP) — Two-time NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid returned to the Philadelphia 76ers' starting lineup against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday. After missing his first seven shots and ambling deliberately in his left knee brace in the first quarter, the 2023 MVP went on a tear to propel the Sixers to a 108-100 win over the Chicago Bulls. Embiid connected on eight of his next 10 shots in the second quarter for his first 19 points of the game, which lifted Philadelphia to a 62-50 halftime lead. The Sixers stretched it to 19 before holding on for their fourth win in five games, and Embiid finished with 31. “I just got lucky and started making shots,” Embiid deadpanned when he talked to reporters almost 90 minutes after the game. “We just missed shots and we adjusted and we got them in.” Embiid, a seven-time All-Star, added 12 rebounds in his fifth game this season. The 7-foot center had missed the previous seven games because of knee injuries and a three-game suspension for pushing a sports columnist. Embiid finished slightly above his career average of nearly 27.8 points per game in 33 minutes. The Sixers don't play again until Friday thanks to the NBA Cup, so coach Nick Nurse planned to give his star ample work Sunday with a break and recovery time ahead. “All of a sudden he certainly caught fire there with a little bit of variety,” Nurse said. “I know a lot of it seemed like foul-line jumpers, which it was. He snuck in a roll or two and a couple of post-ups. It gave us a lot of confidence.” The Sixers trailed 33-23 after the first quarter. Behind Embiid and a 16-0 run in the second, they took the lead for good. Chicago got within four points twice in the fourth, but Philadelphia closed it out. “We guarded really well and we rebounded extremely well at both ends,” Nurse said. Tyrese Maxey got his first career triple-double as part of the winning formula and clicked with Embiid. Maxey finished with 25 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. “It was great, that's who he is,” Maxey said of Embiid. “After he got in the game it's easy, it was easier, man. There was a lot more space out there.” The All-Star trio of Embiid, Maxey and Paul George (12 points) played together for only the second game this season. “Obviously we've got the connection,” Embiid said. "We know when things are not going right, what we need to do. Now it's up to us to make the shots and the plays. “After that first quarter, it just felt like we needed to take more of an ownership as far as getting us back in the game. They're great players.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/nbaInformation commissioners presented appointment lettersMumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 29 (ANI): Bhojpuri folk singer Devi recently participated in an event in Bihar to commemorate the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, her performance took a dramatic turn when she sang a rendition of the bhajan “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.” Devi was allegedly forced to stop singing the bhajan after some audience members objected to the line “Ishwar Allah Tero Naam.” In an interview with ANI, Devi explained what happened at the event. “I am shocked. I was singing a bhajan, a favourite one of Mahatma Gandhi. Big leaders of the BJP including (Bihar) dy CM Vijay Sinha and Ashwini Chaubey were there. A few people of ‘Hindu Putra Sangathan’ started the ruckus when the line ‘ishwar allah tero naam’ came. The on-stage leaders couldn’t figure out how to manage the situation and a few of them came to me and asked to apologise so that the situation could be brought under control,” she said. “I apologised as I didn’t want the situation to deteriorate as I had also received ‘Atal Vishisht Samman’ from the deputy CM there. Now, I think that strict action must be taken against those people who created chaos there... I am receiving threats as well. it’s a disrespect to women. Such a mean act on the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee who kept all the communities together, is shameful... The party should take action against such people. I thank all the people who came in support of me,” Devi added. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi also reacted to the incident, sharing a video clip of it on social media and criticising the protestors.”They offer flowers to Bapu to show off to the world but in reality, they have no respect for him. They take the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar to show off but in reality, they insult him. The BJP hates our tolerant and inclusive culture and tradition so much that they insult our great men again and again,” she wrote in Hindi. (ANI) This report is auto-generated from ANI news service. Over the last few weeks, fans have been treated to a couple of "snow globe" games. While it's fun to watch these games, games with heavy precipitation or wind can be devastating for the weekly fantasy value of receivers and non-rushing quarterbacks. Keeping an eye on games that may have inclement weather is crucial for fantasy managers. Before we get into the Week 15 forecasts, here's a reminder that if you have any questions about sports weather or how the weather could impact play (and potentially your fantasy, DFS, and sports betting decisions), don't hesitate to reach out to RotoGrinders' meteorologist Kevin Roth on Twitter ( @KevinRothWx ) or check out the hourly NFL weather forecasts on RotoGrinders. To take your game to the next level, subscribe to RotoGrinders' exclusive WeatherEdge tool and see how different weather conditions have impacted historical scoring. Note: If a game isn't mentioned below, it's because it doesn't have 10+-mph winds, a 20+-percent chance of precipitation, or extreme temperatures in the forecast. Cincinnati Bengals at Tennessee Titans Per Kevin Roth: "Off and on showers could play a minor role here. Will need to be closer to kickoff to get a better feel for rain timing." Week 15 FANTASY FOOTBALL ROSTER MANAGEMENT Lessons Learned | Stock Watch | Sleepers | Busts | Start 'Em, Sit 'Em | Usage Report | Flex Finder Kansas City Chiefs at Cleveland Browns Per Kevin Roth: " A bit of rain, a bit of wind, but not a ton of either. Scattered showers look fairly likely, winds winds sustained around 15mph gusting to 25mph. Neither is a huge issue, but the combination of some wind and some rain is a slight bump down to the passing attack of both teams." Baltimore Ravens at New York Giants No matter which way you look at it, this game is going to get ugly. The Ravens are favored by two touchdowns, and there is a 40 percent chance of rain in this one. If there is rainfall throughout the game, expect the Ravens and Giants to lean on their rushing attacks to a higher degree. Dallas Cowboys at Carolina Panthers After spending four of their last five games in Jerry's World, the Cowboys will be traveling to Carolina to play in the elements. There's a chance for showers during this NFC matchup with forecasts currently setting the probability at 40 percent. This could change, so check back for updates as the game draws closer. Pittsburgh Steelers at Philadelphia Eagles The battle for Pennsylvania could involve some precipitation; current forecasts set the chance of rain at 50 percent. The Steelers and Eagles are already two of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL, so they would have no problem turning to Najee Harris and Saquon Barkley in this one. Don't be surprised if the rain turns this into a gritty matchup revolving around each team's rushing attack and defense. Green Bay Packers at Seattle Seahawks Unsurprisingly, it could be rainy in Seattle this weekend. The Seahawks will host the Packers on Sunday Night Football and Kevin Roth expects there to be off-and-on rain throughout the game. While it may be raining, Roth expects the rain to be light.
