NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks closed at more records after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to reach another all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3% to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6% as Big Tech stocks helped lead the way. Stock markets abroad saw mostly modest losses, after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office. U.S. automakers and other companies that could be hurt particularly by such tariffs fell. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are rising toward records Tuesday after Donald Trump’s latest talk about tariffs created only some ripples on Wall Street, even if they could roil the global economy were they to take effect. People are also reading... The S&P 500 climbed 0.5% and was on track to top its all-time high set a couple weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 81 points, or 0.2%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.5% higher, with less than an hour remaining in trading. Stock markets abroad were down, but mostly only modestly, after President-elect Trump said he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office. Stock indexes were down 0.1% in Shanghai and nearly flat in Hong Kong, while Canada's main index edged down by just 0.1%. Trump has often praised the use of tariffs , but investors are weighing whether his latest threat will actually become policy or is just an opening point for negotiations. For now, the market seems to be taking it more as the latter. Unless the United States can prepare alternatives for the autos, energy products and other goods that come from Mexico, Canada and China, such tariffs would raise the price of imported items all at once and make households poorer, according to Carl Weinberg and Rubeela Farooqi, economists at High Frequency Economics. They would also hurt profit margins for U.S. companies, while raising the threat of retaliatory tariffs by other countries. General Motors sank 8.2%, and Ford Motor fell 2.6% because both import automobiles from Mexico. Constellation Brands, which sells Modelo and other Mexican beer brands in the United States, dropped 3.9%. Beyond the pain such tariffs would cause U.S. households and businesses, they could also push the Federal Reserve to slow or even halt its cuts to interest rates. The Fed had just begun easing its main interest rate from a two-decade high a couple months ago to offer support to the job market . While lower interest rates can boost the overall economy and prices for investments, they can also offer more fuel for inflation. “Many” officials at the Fed's last meeting earlier this month said they should lower rates gradually, according to minutes of the meeting released Tuesday afternoon. Unlike tariffs in Trump's first term, his proposal from Monday night would affect products across the board. Trump’s tariff talk came almost immediately after U.S. stocks rose Monday amid excitement about his pick for Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent. The hope was the hedge-fund manager could steer Trump away from policies that balloon the U.S. government deficit, which is how much more it spends than it takes in through taxes and other revenue. The talk about tariffs overshadowed another set of mixed profit reports from U.S. retailers that answered few questions about how much more shoppers can keep spending. They’ll need to stay resilient after helping the economy avoid a recession, despite the high interest rates instituted by the Fed to get inflation under control. Kohl’s tumbled 17.6% after its results for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations. CEO Tom Kingsbury said sales remain soft for apparel and footwear. A day earlier, Kingsbury said he plans to step down as CEO in January. Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels and a retail veteran, will replace him. Best Buy fell 4.7% after likewise falling short of analysts’ expectations. Dick’s Sporting Goods topped forecasts for the latest quarter thanks to a strong back-to-school season, but its stock lost an early gain to fall 1.4%. A report on Tuesday from the Conference Board said confidence among U.S. consumers improved in November, but not by as much as economists expected. J.M. Smucker jumped 5.4% for one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500 after topping analysts' expectations for the latest quarter. CEO Mark Smucker credited strength for its Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Café Bustelo and Jif brands. Big Tech stocks also helped prop up U.S. indexes. Gains of 2.8% for Amazon and 2% for Microsoft were the two strongest forces lifting the S&P 500. In the bond market, Treasury yields rose following their big drop from a day before driven by relief following Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary. The yield on the 10-year Treasury climbed to 4.30% from 4.28% late Monday, but it’s still well below the 4.41% level where it ended last week. In the crypto market, bitcoin continued to pull back after topping $99,000 for the first time late last week. It's since dipped back toward $91,600, according to CoinDesk. It’s a sharp turnaround from the bonanza that initially took over the crypto market following Trump’s election. That boom had also appeared to have spilled into some corners of the stock market. Strategists at Barclays Capital pointed to stocks of unprofitable companies, along with other areas that can be caught up in bursts of optimism by smaller-pocketed “retail” investors. B.C. Conservative leader faces test after colleagues' letter attacks Surrey MLABoxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. However, this year’s data had been compared with an unusual spike in footfall as 2023 was the first “proper Christmas” period without Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, an analyst at the retail technology company said. It found £4.6 billion will be spent overall on the festive sales. Before the pandemic the number of Boxing Day shoppers on the streets had been declining year on year. The last uplift recorded by MRI was in 2015. Jenni Matthews, marketing and insights director at MRI Software, told the PA news agency: “We’ve got to bear in mind that (last year) was our first proper Christmas without any (Covid-19) restrictions or limitations. “Figures have come out that things have stabilised, we’re almost back to what we saw pre-pandemic.” There were year-on-year declines in footfall anywhere between 5% and 12% before Covid-19 restrictions, she said. MRI found 12% fewer people were out shopping on Boxing Day in 2019 than in 2018, and there were 3% fewer in 2018 than in 2017, Ms Matthews added. She said: “It’s the shift to online shopping, it’s the convenience, you’ve got the family days that take place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.” People are also increasingly stocking-up before Christmas, Ms Matthews said, and MRI found an 18% increase in footfall at all UK retail destinations on Christmas Eve this year compared with 2023. Ms Matthews said: “We see the shops are full of people all the way up to Christmas Eve, so they’ve probably got a couple of good days of food, goodies, everything that they need, and they don’t really need to go out again until later on in that week. “We did see that big boost on Christmas Eve. It looks like shoppers may have concentrated much of their spending in that pre-Christmas rush.” Many online sales kicked off between December 23 and the night of Christmas Day and “a lot of people would have grabbed those bargains from the comfort of their own home”, she said. She added: “I feel like it’s becoming more and more common that people are grabbing the bargains pre-Christmas.” Footfall is expected to rise on December 27 as people emerge from family visits and shops re-open, including Next, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis that all shut for Boxing Day. It will also be payday for some as it is the last Friday of the month. A study by Barclays Consumer Spend had forecast that shoppers would spend £236 each on average in the Boxing Day sales this year, but that the majority of purchases would be made online. Nearly half of respondents said the cost-of-living crisis will affect their post-Christmas shopping but the forecast average spend is still £50 more per person than it was before the pandemic, with some of that figure because of inflation, Barclays said. Amid the financial pressures, many people are planning to buy practical, perishable and essential items such as food and kitchenware. A total of 65% of shoppers are expecting to spend the majority of their sales budget online. Last year, Barclays found 63.9% of Boxing Day retail purchases were made online. However, a quarter of respondents aim to spend mostly in store – an 11% rise compared with last year. Karen Johnson, head of retail at Barclays, said: “Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, it is encouraging to hear that consumers will be actively participating in the post-Christmas sales. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.Article content Morgan Rielly might not have lost much sleep when he was left off Canada’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off. Recommended Videos While the Maple Leafs defenceman said he will use his exclusion as motivation, there are other things on his mind. “I look at my own game, and assess there,” Rielly said on Friday morning. “You believe in yourself.” And what does Rielly see in evaluating his overall performance as he was one of six Leafs to play in all 25 games before Toronto played host to the Washington Capitals on Friday night? “I feel really good now,” Rielly said. “I think that the start (of the season) I felt really good, and then I became a little bit inconsistent. “I feel like I’m primed right now to have a great month going into Christmas.” For Rielly, and the Leafs as whole, the concentration through the first few months of the 2024-25 regular season has been getting accustomed to what coach Craig Berube wants out of his players. In the defence-first system, those with an offensive bent might find the adjustment to have more challenges. “With a new coach, I was maybe really focused not on the wrong stuff, but trying to get this stuff down pat, trying to be really good defensively,” Rielly said. “I don’t think I’ve been as dangerous offensively because of that, but I’ve been feeling really good the past couple games.” Rielly’s ice time has decreased, but he still is playing more than 21 minutes a game. His career average is 22 minutes 10 seconds. Berube took a longer view in his assessment of the 30-year-old Rielly, the longest-serving current Leafs player. “He has done a good job for us, in my opinion,” Berube said. “He’s used to really getting up into the play, and he still does. I think he’s picking his spots really well with that and defending well.” Crucial to keep in mind as Rielly and the Leafs round into Berube’s form is that they’ve been winning while learning on the job. No one would say the Leafs have been playing perfect hockey, but if it’s about the build to being at their best once the playoffs start in April, the Leafs are going about it the right way. “You can’t lose track of that and that’s big,” Rielly said. “I looked this morning at the standings, and we’re in a great spot. There have been been nights where it hasn’t been as pretty, or there have been periods of time where we haven’t generated offence like we have in the past, but you can’t argue with the results. “In general, I don’t think we’ve tried to reinvent the wheel. But it helps when the big guys buy into it. Everything else seems to follow.” Rielly has proudly worn Canada’s colours in the past. From afar, he’ll cheer on Leafs teammate Mitch Marner and the rest of the group once the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston gets underway on Feb. 12. “In regard to the Team Canada stuff, I wish I was a bit more consistent (in his play earlier),” Rielly said. “But I’m not really making excuses. “It’s always a great honour to play for your country, and you’re always trying to perform well enough to get that opportunity again.” tkoshan@postmedia.com X: @koshtorontosun

The chip-making juggernaut just reported an incredible Q3, beating Wall Street's sky-high expectations. So why was the stock trading lower on Thursday when the market opened? Although it might seem to defy logic, it's not an uncommon phenomenon. Let's take a look at why it happens and see if the past might shed some light on what happens next. First, let's take a look at Nvidia's quarter. Even for Nvidia, this was a strong quarter Few companies have as much riding on their shoulders as Nvidia does in the current market. The company's performance is seen as a bellwether for the market as a whole. It's a good thing, then, that Nvidia delivered this quarter. Nvidia's data center segment continues to be the driving force behind its success, though its gaming arm is still showing solid growth. Demand for its Superchips and related hardware is at a fever pitch. As CEO Jensen Huang puts it, "The age of AI is in full steam, propelling a global shift to Nvidia computing." The big news is the confirmation that Blackwell, the newest iteration of its Superchips, is on schedule and will be rolled out without a hitch. During the earnings call, Huang made clear that the first chips are already "in the hands of all of [Nvidia's] major partners" and will soon be shipped to end users -- companies like Meta and Microsoft operate massive AI data centers. According to Huang, demand for Blackwell is "staggering"; Nvidia has so many orders it is struggling to keep pace. Despite this, demand for its current Hopper chips remains strong, and Huang indicated he believed orders would continue well into next year. Nvidia's reach is global Beyond the numbers, Nvidia highlighted some important developments that show the growing demand beyond U.S. commercial clients. Denmark just launched its first AI supercomputer driven by Nvidia's Hopper chips. This is an important client base for Nvidia that is often overshadowed by its success with big tech cloud operators. "Sovereign AI" -- world governments running their own computers -- could be a massive industry as nations around the world enter an information arms race. Nvidia is also finding commercial success worldwide, with new private companies in India, Japan, and Indonesia building Nvidia-powered AI data centers. Nvidia's stock dips In the initial hours after the market opened on Thursday, shares of Nvidia slipped, briefly reaching $141 after closing at nearly $146 the day before. Why would this happen after such a strong quarter? This is pretty common if Wall Street's expectations exceed the company's performance, even if that performance is solid. That's not what happened here. Nvidia beat estimates handily, delivering revenues of $35.1 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of $0.81. Consensus targets were $33.2 billion and $0.75, respectively. Here's the thing: market sentiment can exceed even Wall Street estimates. With all the hype around Nvidia and talk of "insane" demand for its new chips, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the company to live up to investors' expectations no matter what numbers it delivers. It's the curse of success. Nvidia has continuously beat estimates, so now, even when it does, it might not be by enough. Certain research has shown that investors tend to put too much faith in past earnings. Over time, this leads to a stock being overbought in the lead-up to an earnings release and a short-term dip after the release. What Nvidia is experiencing is very normal. Don't panic. The long-term potential is where we want to place most of our focus here and this report shows it is still firing on all cylinders. Given other stocks that have been in Nvidia's shoes and Nvidia itself last quarter -- shares dipped 18% in the days after earnings -- history tells us that the stock will be just fine.

Source: Legit.ng(The Center Square) – A decision in a lawsuit that would impact homeowners with natural gas furnaces nationwide could come next spring or early summer. The American Gas Association has mounted a legal challenge to the U.S. Department of Energy’s final Consumer Furnace Rule , establishing new standards for residential furnaces to make them more energy efficient. That new rule would eventually marginalize noncondensing furnaces that aren't as energy efficient and make newer furnaces mandatory in 2028. On Thursday, AGA, in collaboration with other trade associations and organizations, presented oral arguments before the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in AGA v. DOE . AGA’s chief regulatory counsel for energy, Matthew Agen, told The Center Square in a Tuesday interview that his organization doesn’t believe DOE is complying with the rules. He cited the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which prohibits efficiency standards that eliminate entire product classes. “This rule is very onerous to gas consumers because what it really will do is limit the ability of customers to access natural gas furnaces,” Agen said, explaining the DOE rules raise energy efficiency requirements for all natural gas furnaces. DOE expects that updating furnace efficiency standards will, over 30 years, cut carbon emissions by 332 million metric tons, roughly equivalent to the combined annual emissions of 42 million homes, or approximately 34 percent of homes in the United States, and methane emissions by 4.3 million tons. According to a news release from AGA, the only natural gas furnaces capable of complying with the new rule are condensing furnaces. Due to physical limitations, these furnaces are often difficult or impossible to substitute in place of conventional, noncondensing models. Consumers who currently rely on noncondensing furnaces would be forced to remodel their homes or businesses to accommodate a condensing appliance or abandon natural gas appliances altogether in favor of electric appliances. “It means the furnace has to be vented in a certain way, out the top of your house, and then also with condensing, there’s a lot of water vapor, so it needs a drain,” Agen said. “Noncondensing products account for between 50%-and-60% of furnaces purchased annually,” he continued. “If you need to replace a noncondensing furnace with a condensing one, you have to get a contractor to come do it and get someone to do the up-venting and someone to do the drainage.” AGA thinks DOE is relying on the fact most people won’t go through the hassle. “They are assuming people won’t want to go to all that trouble,” Agen said, “so they’ll just put in electric, and it will push people that way.” According to AGA's news releases, the final furnace rule also fails to meet EPCA’s standard of being “economically justified.” The news release goes on to say, “According to DOE’s own analysis, the average consumer would save only a handful of dollars each year, with some customers taking almost a decade to recover their replacement costs.” An AGA study found that natural gas used in a baseline new home costs $1,132 less per year than an equivalent all-electric household. DOE, according to AGA, has another rule pending related to natural gas-powered water heaters. “DOE’s applying their same logic with regard to condensing and noncondensing that would ban a particular kind of natural gas water heater from the market,” Agen said. Pushback to the move away from natural gas was evidenced in Washington state, where Initiative 2066 was passed on Nov. 5. I-2066 requires utilities to provide natural gas service to any person or business who requests it and bans the Washington Utility and Trade Commission from approving multi-year rate plans that require or incentivize terminating natural gas service. The initiative was initiated in response to the passage of House Bill 1589 , which aimed to speed Puget Sound Energy’s transition away from natural gas. “It has been in the current [Biden] administration, a whole of government approach to attempt to limit access to natural gas,” Agen said. “DOE has been using the efficiency standards to basically limit people’s access to natural gas and push people to electric.” That may change, he said, when former President Donald Trump takes office in January. “For rulemakings in the pipeline, we anticipate some change, whether that’s a pause or it could be stopping,” Agen said. “But with this case already before the court, it’s kind of unclear. Our goal is to win, obviously, but if we don’t win, I can see us challenging the whole court of appeals en banc.” He concluded, “Depending on what happens there we would evaluate a potential Supreme Court option.” Get any of our free email newsletters — news headlines, sports, arts & entertainment, state legislature, CFD news, and more.

NFL Thanksgiving, Black Friday CapsulesJERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s attorney general has ordered police to open an investigation into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife on suspicion of harassing political opponents and witnesses in the Israeli leader’s corruption trial. The Israeli Justice Ministry made the announcement in a terse message late Thursday, saying the investigation would focus on the findings of a recent report by the “Uvda” investigative program into Sara Netanyahu. The program uncovered a trove of WhatsApp messages in which Mrs. Netanyahu appears to instruct a former aid to organize protests against political opponents and to intimidate Hadas Klein, a key witness in the trial. The announcement did not mention Mrs. Netanyahu by name, and the Justice Ministry declined further comment. But in a video released earlier Thursday, Netanyahu listed what he said were the many kind and charitable acts by his wife and blasted the Uvda report as “lies.” It was the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the Netanyahus — highlighted by the prime minister's ongoing corruption trial . Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases alleging he exchanged favors with powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. Netanyahu denies the charges and says he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by overzealous prosecutors, police and the media.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 2, 2024-- At AWS re:Invent, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com , Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), today announced new data center components designed to support the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and customers’ evolving needs. These capabilities combine innovations in power, cooling, and hardware design to create a more energy efficient data center that will underpin further customer innovation. These new capabilities will be implemented globally in AWS’s new data centers, and many components are already deployed in its existing data centers. To learn more, visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUIrNGwUu14 . This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20241201928268/en/ “AWS continues to relentlessly innovate its infrastructure to build the most performant, resilient, secure, and sustainable cloud for customers worldwide,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS. “These data center capabilities represent an important step forward with increased energy efficiency and flexible support for emerging workloads. But what is even more exciting is that they are designed to be modular, so that we are able to retrofit our existing infrastructure for liquid cooling and energy efficiency to power generative AI applications and lower our carbon footprint.” AWS has been building large-scale data centers for 18 years and GPU-based servers for AI workloads for 13 years. Today, AWS’s data centers support millions of active customers worldwide, including hundreds of thousands of customers using AWS AI and machine learning services, and tens of thousands of global customers using Amazon Bedrock to build their generative AI applications. As use of generative AI continues to grow and GPU capacity demands increase, AWS data centers are adapting to support increasingly higher power densities. Key improvements include: 1. Simplified electrical and mechanical design for high availability AWS continuously focuses on offering customers the most reliable infrastructure. Simplified electrical and mechanical designs are more reliable and easier to maintain, ensuring that customers enjoy the benefits of high reliability that AWS has offered from the beginning. AWS’s latest data center design improvements include simplified electrical distribution and mechanical systems, which enable infrastructure availability of 99.9999%. The simplified systems also reduce the potential number of racks that can be impacted by electrical issues by 89%. In a data center, electricity goes through multiple conversion and distribution systems before reaching the IT equipment. Each step naturally introduces inefficiency, energy loss, and potential failure points. As one new design example, AWS simplified the electrical distribution and in doing so, reduced the number of potential failure points by 20%. Other examples of simplifications include bringing backup power closer to the rack and reducing the number of fans that are used to exhaust hot air. AWS is using the natural pressure differential to exhaust hot air, which improves the amount of electricity available for servers. All of these changes help reduce overall energy consumption while minimizing the risk of failures. 2. Innovations in cooling, rack design, and control systems AWS has built a number of new and enhanced capabilities to offer customers the most performant, highly available, and energy efficient infrastructure possible. New data center innovations include: This design will support the next generation of hardware and high-density racks required for AI workloads, but is flexible enough to accommodate a wide range of other hardware types. AWS infrastructure offers the broadest and deepest compute platform with more than 750 Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (Amazon EC2) instances, giving customers choice of the latest processor, storage, networking, operating system, and purchase model for any workload. In addition to the flexible multimodal cooling design, AWS has developed engineering innovations in its power delivery systems, which enable AWS to support a 6x increase in rack power density over the next two years, and another 3x increase in the future. This is delivered in part by a new power shelf, which efficiently delivers data center power throughout the rack, reducing electrical conversion losses. Taken together, these innovations enable AWS to deliver 12% more compute power per site for customer workloads. These changes will reduce the overall number of data centers needed to deliver the same amount of compute capacity. 3. Increased energy efficiency and sustainability, including 46% reduction in mechanical energy consumption and 35% reduction in embodied carbon in the concrete used For many years, AWS has been a pioneer in improving energy efficiency and sustainability across its infrastructure. Research estimates AWS’s infrastructure is currently up to 4.1 times more efficient than on-premises infrastructure, and when workloads are optimized on AWS, the associated carbon footprint can be reduced by up to 99%. In 2023, Amazon achieved its goal to match all of the electricity consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy – seven years ahead of its 2030 goal. AWS continuously reevaluates how its data centers operate and determines ways to help its infrastructure use energy more efficiently through ongoing innovation. The new components include the following upgrades for energy efficiency and sustainability: “Data centers must evolve to meet AI’s transformative demands,” said Ian Buck, vice president of hyperscale and HPC at NVIDIA. “By enabling advanced liquid cooling solutions, AI infrastructure can be efficiently cooled while minimizing energy use. Our work with AWS on their liquid cooling rack design will allow customers to run demanding AI workloads with exceptional performance and efficiency.” “As Anthropic develops our leading foundation models, having access to secure, performant, and energy-efficient infrastructure is crucial to our success,” said James Bradbury, distinguished engineer, Compute, at Anthropic. “AWS’s commitment to building cutting-edge data centers is one of the key reasons we’ve chosen them as our primary cloud provider and training partner. Their design improvements represent a significant step forward in providing secure, scalable, and efficient infrastructure to power AI models and drive innovation in this field.” “AWS’s continuous infrastructure advancements allow us to concentrate on innovating new services that help our customers make more informed financial decisions rather than the undifferentiated heavy lifting of running data centers,” said Alex Lintner, CEO of Technology, Software Solutions and Innovation, Experian. “Security and regulatory compliance are fundamental for us, and working with AWS helps to fortify our position as a trusted technology provider, supporting businesses across a variety of industries. With their energy-efficient and AI-optimized facilities, we can dedicate more resources to the rapid delivery of new data-driven products rather than data center management.” “Our customers depend on us to deliver reliable and highly secure generative AI innovation in a trusted, private environment,” said Jeff Reihl, chief technology officer, LexisNexis Legal & Professional. “Our longstanding partnership with AWS and their leading infrastructure enable us to deliver this, and also meet our goal of increasing our positive environmental impact while striving to reduce our environmental footprint.” The new data center components are built to scale across all of AWS’s infrastructure worldwide, including its 34 Regions, 108 Availability Zones, and other infrastructure offerings like AWS Local Zones. Construction on new AWS data centers with the full set of components is expected to begin in early 2025 in the United States. Nearly three years ago Scanlan succeeded legendary Secretary of State Bill Gardner – who retired after serving in the position for nearly a half-century. “We’re geared up now to get new ballot counting devices into the polling places,” Scanlan said, adding that the state will “transition over the next two years to the newer devices.” The upgrading of polling equipment may help alleviate the long lines some of the larger communities dealt with last month on Election Day. Asked about complaints over the wait times from some lawmakers, Scanlan said that the long lines often mean “you’re having an incredible turnout for an election.” “There were some large polling places where there were lines, but the lines were moving, and the operations inside were efficient,” Scanlan said. But the Secretary of State acknowledged that improvements can be made, especially where wait times were more than an hour for some voters to calls their ballots. “There were lines in New Hampshire longer than they should be and we will be working with the individual towns where those situations occurred to help up with solutions to those problems,” Scanlan said. Article continues after... Cross|Word Flipart Typeshift SpellTower Really Bad Chess Scanlan emphasized outreach efforts by his office to specific populations, including veterans, minority groups, and students. “We have started some programs that are really going to evolve nicely over the next two years,” he said. He said the mission of these efforts is to “try to get the public to reengage in civic activities and one of those is working as poll workers, helping to run an election... in doing so I think we help educate the public on how elections are run.” While Scanlan sailed to reelection, he faced criticism from the progressive advocacy group 603 Forward. In an email headlined “Anti-Voter Scanlan Elected to Second Full Term as New Hampshire Secretary of State,” the organization argued that Scanlan’s support for what it called “two of the most restrictive voter registration changes New Hampshire has ever seen” has resulted in the state “now having the most restrictive and costly voter registration systems in the country.” Scanlan described 603 Forward as a “special interest dark money group.” “They are quick to criticize everything that my department has done,”he said. “They’re not a fan of the office and they simply never will be.” He argued that “in New Hampshire, we’ve done a lot to make voting easy,” but “we have those insurances in place that people that are voting are actually qualified to vote. There needs to be a balance there and I am working to achieve that balance.” Confidence in election results requires transparency. “We want 100% of the voters who are qualified to participate but they should be prepared to show that they are in fact qualified,” Scanlan said. A key part of the Secretary of State’s job description is protecting the state’s century-old first-in-the-nation presidential primary status. While the Republican National Committee kept to tradition in the 2024 election cycle, Scanlan was put to the test by the Democratic National Committee, which in early 2023 upended its presidential primary calendar, demoting New Hampshire to the second spot in the order, along with Nevada. Scanlan, adhering to a nearly half-century-old law that mandates that New Hampshire hold the first presidential primary, a week ahead of any similar contest, scheduled the contest for Jan. 23, with the Democratic presidential primary ending up being an unsanctioned election. Looking ahead to 2028, Scanlan pledged that he will “absolutely” once again protect New Hampshire’s primary status. And pointing to a White House race without an incumbent president seeking re-election, he predicted that “there will be candidates lining up on both sides wanting to take a shot at it and New Hampshire is the place where they can get a leg up if they do well. ... I would fully expect the candidates will be in New Hampshire early testing their message and making the appropriate contacts. “New Hampshire is probably the last remaining place where the average person who has that dream to become president can go campaign and actually try to make it happen,” he said. The Democratic National Committee won’t officially decide on the 2028 presidential primary calendar for another two years, but that’s not stopping Nevada’s Democratic Party chair from putting in a plug for her state. “Nevada is the battleground state that best reflects our growing nation and the Democratic Party cannot afford to let overwhelmingly college-educated, white, or less competitive states start the process of winnowing the field again in 2028. This will be one of the DNC’s primary responsibilities over the next two years, and it’s crucial that we set an early window and primary calendar that puts us in the best position to win back the White House,” chair Daniele Monroe-Moreno argued in a statement this week. Asked about her comments, longtime New Hampshire Democratic Party chair Ray Buckley noted that in the four times Nevada was in the third spot in the party’s presidential nominating calendar, “Democrats won more votes than Republicans.” Buckley said after Nevada “stirred the pot” and lobbied to move its state up in the calendar this past cycle, the Democrats lost the national popular vote this year. In fact, New Hampshire was the only one of the early voting states in the Democrats’ 2024 primary calendar that Vice President Kamala Harris carried last month. It’s here. American Thanksgiving. While most of our friends south of the border look at the late-November holiday and think NFL when it comes to sports, most Canadians view it through a different lens. They examine the NHL standings – hoping that their team is above the playoff line. Why? Since realignment occurred over a decade ago, 80% of the teams that are in playoff spots at Thanksgiving qualify for the post-season. For those that are mathematically challenged, that’s 13 out of 16 teams. That was the case last season as well as Edmonton, Nashville and the New York Islanders were the only teams to make the playoffs despite being on the outside looking in on Nov. 23, 2023. Last year on that date, the Vancouver Canucks had 27 points and only the Vegas Golden Knights — with 30 — had more. The Canucks performance in those first 20 games basically clinched a playoff spot. This season the Canucks haven’t been as fortunate. Not having the services of all-star goaltender Thatcher Demko since the start of the season due to a knee injury was the first issue that the hockey club had to deal with. Dakota Joshua also missed the first 14 games recovering from off-season cancer surgery. Brock Boeser suffered what appeared to be a concussion on Nov. 7 and missed seven games but was set to return to the lineup in Boston against the Bruins on Tuesday night. Then there’s J.T. Miller, who took a leave of absence on Nov. 19 for personal reasons. Add it all up and it’s a Canuck team that has been treading water without their three All-Stars from a year ago. After Monday’s games, Vancouver was below the playoff bar with 23 points, trailing both Colorado and Edmonton by one point for the two wildcard spots. The Canucks are also two points behind the Los Angeles Kings for third place in the Pacific Division. The good news with all of these scenarios is that the Canucks have played the least number of games — 19 — of any team in the National Hockey League entering Tuesday’s game versus Boston. They have three games in hand on Edmonton, Colorado and Los Angeles. However, the question remains: will the Canucks make the playoffs? Many assume once the team gets 100% healthy, they will find a way to get it done but you know what they say about people who assume. Let’s start with Demko, the 28-year-old who compiled a 2.45 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage last season to go along with 35 wins in 51 games. Since March 10, he has played a grand total of four games; that’s four games in eight months. After such a lengthy layoff, the biggest concern for Demko will be timing and getting used to the intensity level of NHL games. As we often say when it comes to football, nothing duplicates game speed. For Demko, getting used to the speed and regular chaos of NHL games will be a challenge. Then there is Boeser, who had been out of the lineup for almost three weeks after taking a headshot from Tanner Jeannot in a game against the Kings in early November. Hopefully, there won’t be any lingering symptoms from that injury and Boeser can regain the pace that saw him score 40 goals last year and which he was duplicating this season with six goals in 12 games. As for Miller, when he does return, what player will the Canucks be getting? His play had dipped to the point where he was benched for the last 14:40 of the third period in his final game versus Nashville on Nov. 17. Miller’s production had waned with only six goals and ten assists in 17 games – well off the levels from a year ago when he tallied 37 goals and 66 assists. Then there are other issues that are of concern as well. The second defensive pair of Tyler Myers and Carson Soucy has struggled this season to the point where the organization is checking in with other teams as they look to get help for their blue line corps. What has compounded the problem is that Tocchet has emphasized since training camp that he wants his defencemen to be more involved in the offense and generating more chances. That doesn’t exactly fit into the skill set of either Myers or Soucy so it’s been noted that the Canucks are talking to other teams with Pittsburgh’s Marcus Pettersson being a player of interest. Although Pettersson is a solid defender, he’s not exactly the answer to the Canucks problems when it comes to offence from the back-end. While we are on the topic of Petterssons, the enigma known as Elias Pettersson will need to regain the form that saw him be a dynamic play-driver who scored 30-plus goals the last three seasons. Tocchet and the organization wanted to see more of an investment from Pettersson and the Swede has shown signs of improvement with four goals and six assists in his last seven games. There are other positive signs as well. Quinn Hughes continues to play at a Norris Trophy-calibre level while Kevin Lankinen has provided consistent goaltending during Demko’s absence. Conor Garland continues to play like Conor Garland and Pius Sutter and Teddy Blueger continue to provide good depth while new additions Kiefer Sherwood and Erik Brannstrom have exceeded expectations. Given what we know about the U.S Thanksgiving Day playoff trend, it’s not a slam dunk that the Canucks will make the post-season but it’s not a slam dunk they won’t either. Unlike last year when the team had enough of a cushion in the standings to play games pressure-free for the most part in the second half, it appears they won’t have that luxury this season. As Tocchet always likes to say, things are going to just keep ‘getting tougher’ and the Canucks are going to have to ‘embrace the hard’ as they deal with the grind of an NHL season. Their playoff hopes will depend on it.

Boxing Day shopper footfall was down 7.9% from last year across all UK retail destinations up until 5pm, MRI Software’s OnLocation Footfall Index found. “This year, we’re likely to see a shift towards practicality and sustainability, with more shoppers looking to bag bargains on kitchen appliances and second-hand goods.” Consumers choose in-store shopping largely because they enjoy the social aspect and touching items before they buy, Barclays said, adding that high streets and shopping centres are the most popular destinations.Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced that the government is preparing to introduce a policy related to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking at the inaugural session of 'IT Meet-2024' organized by the Kathmandu University Computer Club in Dhulikhel today, Minister Gurung emphasized that discussions would precede the formulation of laws following the introduction of the AI policy. "Once the AI policy is established, we can introduce additional programs through information technology," he noted, adding that the Ministry is currently working on preparations. As the government spokesperson, Gurung stated, "This is the era of IT. We will implement AI-related laws as part of the Digital Nepal Framework." He further emphasized that the introduction of e-governance could significantly reduce corruption. "E-governance can be implemented through the Digital Nepal Framework, and it will help curb corruption," he asserted. The Communications Minister expressed that plans, programs, and budgets from all three levels of government could be managed through e-governance, and urged that necessary policies and laws be formulated to support its implementation across seven provinces, 753 local levels, 22 ministries, and 761 government offices nationwide. Manish Pokharel, Dean of the School of Engineering at Kathmandu University, highlighted that IT Meet-2024 would provide a platform to promote innovation and creativity, offering new opportunities and inspiration by uniting young people in the IT field. The two-day event will feature various activities, including coding competitions, project demonstrations, gaming events, and a googling competition.

Curtis Gray, 19, faces two counts of second-degree murder tied to the Nov. 17 shootings along a crowded parade route, according to a news release from the New Orleans Police Department. Gray allegedly fatally shot Rasean Carter, 21, and Malachi Jackson, 19, at the Almonaster Avenue Bridge, authorities say. Carter, an aspiring photographer who lived in Marrero just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, had planned to document the Nine Times Social Aid & Pleasure Club's annual outing and was accompanied by Jackson, his friend and uncle, Nola.com reported. The parade was part of New Orleans' long-running tradition of “second-lines” where revelers follow brass bands marching through the streets and has deep ties to the city's Black culture. The deaths of Carter and Jackson were among a series of recent lethal shootings in New Orleans. While most violence has been on the decline in the city since mid-2023 , there were three people killed and eight wounded in six shootings over the past weekend according to Nola.com . On Thursday, New Orleans police arrested two men, Darrell Fairley Jr., 18, and Cornelius G. Tillman, 19, in connection with a Nov. 30 double homicide in New Orleans East.Callahan: Jerod Mayo’s bye week plans and more Week 14 thoughts
