NoneAn innovative electrolyser design that uses steam to produce green hydrogen rather than water has completed its first successful road test in a real world setting. The technology – a modular assembly of tubes about half a metre long – has been installed at BlueScope’s Port Kembla Steelworks in New South Wales where it has run without incident for over 1000 hours. This by a team of 14 scientists from CSIRO and in partnership with Hadean Energy which has licensed the technology and has ambitions to build a 250 kWh demonstration system. Conventional hydrogen electrolysers work by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, but the new technology developed by CSIRO passes 750C waste heat generated in heavy industrial processes through a series of ceramic tubes. An electric current is run along the walls of these tubes which splits the high temperature steam into hydrogen and water. The modular design of these tubes promises to reduce the cost of manufacturing, reduces production costs by 30 percent, allowing the system to make hydrogen at less than 36 kWh a kilo. CSIRO Senior Principal Research Scientist and Group Leader Dr Sarb Giddey says the use of steam is important in lowering costs of green hydrogen. The lion’s share of variable production costs for renewable hydrogen are in electricity, and a 30 per cent reduction in the electricity required – by using this steam-based technology – could be a game changer for the industry. Giddey says that with the trial run serving as proof of concept, the question now was how to scale up the system to provide the amount of hydrogen needed for use applications such as iron and steelmaking, or ammonia production. “There are two factors that are really critical to decarbonising iron making and steel making – one is the cost of hydrogen, the other is the scale we can produce at,” Giddey said. “We are looking at tonnes and tonnes of hydrogen being produced. If you look at the scale required for iron and steel making, it’s a lot of hydrogen. You have to replace the coal.” According to the , the steel industry globally accounts for 2.8 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions each year, or 8 percent of total energy system emissions. Hydrogen is expected to be essential in helping to decarbonise iron and steelmaking processes but it is currently made using gas or coal. Some proposals have sought to use carbon, capture, utilisation and storage to remove the CO2 from the steel production process, but of the approach. Of the six proposed steelmaking projects that are seeking to rely on CCUS, the analysts found all lack transparency about key details on the projects including capture capacity and storage type. Two of three projects considered in “advanced development” do not have dates by which they expect to enter production. The world’s only operational commercial-scale CCUS project for steelmaking, the project in the United Arab Emirates, only manages to capture a quarter of its emissions, the analysts found. CSIRO’s green hydrogen technology has been licenced to Hadean Energy which is seeking to develop a modular design. A showcase of a 5kW demonstration unit as part of the Australia-UK Renewable Hydrogen Innovation Partnership is in planning. I ran because I loved it, and because I loved it, I fell prey to the Strava-fication of it. Suddenly, I was no longer running for myself. I was running for public consumption. An MRI found that the lingering pain I’d been ignoring in my heels — something my watch hadn’t picked up on — was caused by four running-induced stress fractures. Recovering from the injury forced me to be sedentary, and during that time I’ve thought a lot about the app-ification of exercise culture. I’ve realized that health optimization tools — the ones marketed as necessary for better sleep, a lower resting heart rate, higher VO2 max (a measure of how much oxygen your body absorbs) and so on — are designed to profit off our fitness anxiety. We track ourselves this way and that way, obsessing over our shortcomings to no apparent end. In doing so, we are deprogrammed from listening to innate physiological signals and reprogrammed to create shadow experiences such as posting our detailed workout stats or running paths on digital walls that no one is looking at. I’ve also learned that if you stop tracking, you will feel marginally but measurably better. I don’t deny that today’s fitness gadgets are incredibly alluring, and in many ways tracking can be useful for training. I am convinced, however, that overreliance on the data collected by devices and apps — and the comparisons we draw from sharing it — can quickly corrupt and commodify what I find to be the true essence of running: being present. When we aren’t tracking, when we are just doing, we can begin to reap the dull yet profound psychological benefits of endurance sports — the repetitive silence, the consistent failure — that can’t be captured in a post or monetized. And when we endure the mundane and difficult aspects of a sport, over and over, we often make gains that are mindful as well as physical, becoming more aware of how and what we pay attention to. This is no small task. It takes discipline to remain aware, present and undistracted. Exercise is a rare opportunity to allow our bodies’ movement to color our thoughts from one minute to the next. When we’re in motion, we don’t need to analyze our health metrics. We can learn to accept the moment and be humbled by our limitations. Gift-giving season will attempt to convince you that you need devices to make your exercise more effective and efficient. There will be bright and beautiful advertisements featuring famous athletes. There will be a sleeker smartwatch and a cutting-edge GPS tracking shoe sole like that one Instagram keeps showing you. Be skeptical. Freeing yourself, even temporarily, from the smartwatch or smartphone or smart-fill-in-the-blank that is tracking your every move is a challenge worth taking on. The factory is designed to produce high-capacity ballastless track slabs using advanced Shinkansen technology , the release added. Located in Kim village the the project site ensures efficient logistics for the bullet train construction and timely delivery of track slabs. As per the information mentioned in the release, the pre-cast reinforced concrete track slabs are typically 2,200 mm wide, 4,900 mm long, and 190 mm thick, with each slab weighing approximately 3.9 tons. The factory is designed to produce 120 slabs per day, ensuring a continuous supply of key components for the first bullet train project in India, as per the release. This factory will produce track slabs for the 237 km high-speed rail track in Gujarat's MAHSR corridor and the DNH (352 km) section, the release added. The factory is developed over a total area of 19 acres, with the manufacturing plant covering a crucial 7-acre area. The production building spans 190 meters by 90 meters. Within this space, a total of 120 track slab molds will be placed in three sections, enabling simultaneous production of multiple slabs. The factory has a large-scale stacking capacity of 10,000 track slabs. This ensures organised storage of the produced slabs, making them ready for transportation to construction sites as needed. As of November 29 this year, about 9,775 slabs have been cast so far. The slabs are being transported to the track construction base, where they will be laid on the viaduct as part of the ongoing track construction for the high-speed rail project, the release added. An additional track slab manufacturing facility has been set up in Anand, Gujarat, for the construction of track slabs for the 116 km stretch of the MAHSR corridor. Over 22,000 slabs, equivalent to 110 track kilometers, have been cast in both factories. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will feature a ballastless track system based on the Japanese Shinkansen track design, utilizsing the J-slab track system , as per the release. Malaysian Member of Parliament and former Minister of Youth and Sports Syed Saddiq, 31, said on Nov. 29 that he will file an appeal against the Malaysian High Court's decision to convict him of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering. The full grounds of judgment were made available on Nov. 28. This comes more than a year after Saddiq was convicted on Nov. 9, 2023. Saddiq said he wanted his appeal to be heard "as soon as possible" Saddiq said in a Facebook post that he has "always insisted" on clearing his name in court. "Today, after anxiously waiting for more than 386 days, I have finally received the written judgment from the Yang Arif High Court Judge, which will allow me to commence my appeal in court," he said. "Although I have had many opportunities to get my case dropped, I chose not to pursue them because I strongly believe that no one, not even the powerful, should be above the law." The Muar Member of Parliament said he had instructed his lawyers to file an appeal, noting that he wanted it to be heard "as soon as possible". Saddiq said he pledged to respect the judiciary as an institution, no matter how painful or unjust he may perceive the verdict to be. Saddiq, former leader of Malaysian political party MUDA, was found guilty of misappropriating funds belonging to Armada, the youth wing of his former party Bersatu. The trial started in Jun. 21, 2022. Saddiq was found guilty of four charges by the Malaysian High Court on Nov. 9, 2023, and was sentenced to seven years in jail, two strokes of the cane, as well as a RM10 million fine (S$2.9 million). However, Saddiq was granted a stay of execution pending appeal. Justice Azhar's sentencing Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid said it was unreasonable for Saddiq, a political youth wing leader at that time, to be ignorant of the RM1 million (S$300,000) that was withdrawn from the bank account of Armada, The Star reported. The judge also added that Saddiq's denial of knowledge of money being deposited and the use of the money was also hard to understand. Saddiq previously claimed that the money deposited into his personal account was a reimbursement for having used his own cash, but Justice Azhar said he found no evidence to support such claim. He said that Saddiq's young age and the fact that he was a first-time offender were considered in sentencing. A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also wanted the job, according to emails revealed as part of the court case, but grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. Ellesmere College will receive $55m to rebuild and redevelop the school, five years after the work was first proposed. Plans for the redevelopment have been finalised with constructionset to get under way early next year. The project is expected to be completed in 2028. Rolleston College will receive more than $50m to fund the first stage of construction for a much-needed second campus. The first stage of the second campus - now cut back to a 24-classroom science, technology, engineering and maths block, a single-court gymnasium and 12 temporary classrooms - is expected to be completed by December 2025, allowing for a roll of about 650 students. Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg said it was “vital” Selwyn’s young people get the best educational opportunities possible. Modern classrooms and facilities are “critical” to that, she said. “I am so pleased Ellesmere College will be receiving nearly $55 million in total, meaning the project can finally enter construction. “Equally, as the fastest growing town in New Zealand, investment in schools in Rolleston is imperative,” Grigg said.
