Sunday 155 Years Ago Virginia City — earthquake: There were many heavy and alarming earthquake shocks with persons remaining in the streets all night while those who stayed in their dwellings were unable to sleep. They were dressed and prepared for a rush in case of a heavy shock. At Steamboat Springs there seems to have been more severe earthquakes than any other place. Jets of water, 15 or 20 in number and those of great volume were thrown up to 20 feet. The house at the Springs is a perfect wreck, but still standing. Parnell Palme McGuinness explores the concept of the decline in “woke” (“ 2024 is the year that woke broke ”, December 22). Why do I find this disturbing? Woke seems to have been a pejorative term for having a social conscience. Detractors of woke attract all sorts of over-the-top caveats to it. Donald Trump finally gave people permission to be openly uncaring of various groups of people. With the alleged abandonment of woke, will we all be more openly hostile to these people? Is this behind the rise of antisemitism? Which group will we hate next? Stay tuned. Jan Marshall, Collaroy Having been a strident critic of all things “woke-ish” across the past decade, McGuinness cannot contain her joy and enthusiasm at her self-nominated demise of woke. According to McGuinness, the game is over for those who have supported social justice issues for minority, diverse or disadvantaged people. You have lost the contest and with it goes the hopes and dreams of those disadvantaged minorities in our community. What a Pyrrhic victory, as our society is much the poorer for our minority groups once again being cast adrift. I find the gloating quite distasteful. Warren Marks, Richmond (Tas) Independent climate action I don’t understand what US climate change policy under Trump would have to do with our own emissions reduction time frame or targets (“ Emissions target hit by Trump concerns ”, December 22). If Trump follows through with his threats to reduce climate action, then wouldn’t that mean other countries should step up their efforts to compensate for an irresponsible US on climate action? In the face of hundreds of climate scientists saying we should drastically cut the burning of fossil fuels, Trump wants to ramp up this burning. Let’s ignore him and every other country, and just get on with their own efforts to reduce pollution. Dennis O’Hara, Wanniassa (ACT) President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to reduce climate action. Credit: Bloomberg Using Donald Trump as an excuse for delaying Australia’s 2035 emissions target until after the election is convenient nonsense. An emissions target is just that, a target, and it is based upon what a country needs to do to reach net zero by 2050. It is also based on science. While Trump may make the target harder to achieve, the target itself should be independent. The best that can be said is “late is better than never”, unlike the Coalition, who would scrap the interim targets altogether. Ray Peck, Hawthorn (Vic) Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Energy Minister Chris Bowen should be able to make up their own minds. I really don’t understand why Australia can’t do its bit for the climate and environment without waiting for the Climate Change Authority or America. They should be leaders, not followers. Jenny Greenwood, Hunters Hill Time’s up for zoos I believe zoos have no place in modern society (“Residents fear zoo gondolas too much to bear” , December 22). The old line that “it helps subsidise the cost of preserving species” is spurious. There are better ways to do this without keeping these beautiful creatures in small enclosures to be gawked at by tourists. I used to go to the zoo, and even took my kids to the zoo. But as human beings we are forever evolving and should be questioning and reflecting on things and behaviours that we once thought were acceptable but don’t pass the pub test now. Turn Taronga Zoo into a park, and forget about the cable car. Lisa Del Vecchio, South Coogee No excuse for murder I detect a whiff of empathy from a correspondent ( Sun Herald letters , December 22) for alleged murderer Luigi Mangione, plus well-placed anger at health insurance companies, which reject 32 per cent of claims. The letter writer’s claims that Mangione “was not aiming at the grab-bag of issues Trump latched onto” is, unfortunately, dead accurate. Rather, Mangione allegedly aimed straight at the back of a health insurance company’s CEO, who’d previously had a name, Brian Thompson, a personality, a family, and a life. Rosemary O’Brien, Ashfield Good education needn’t break the bank St Clare’s College, a Catholic systemic school, and a number of comprehensive public schools have academically outperformed many expensive private schools (“ Low-fee Sydney schools that beat their expensive HSC rivals ”, December 22). The schools did it without a library resembling a Scottish baronial castle, $170 million worth of building upgrades, or a heated gymnasium and 50-metre indoor swimming pool. A quality education can be achieved without exorbitant excesses. John Cotterill, Kingsford Degree of civility No need to introduce new rules to contain the practice of “lecture bashing”, where students at the University of Sydney, with lecturer permission, have been granted five minutes to make political statements to a captive audience (“ The radical proposal that could end Sydney Uni’s proud history of rebellion”, December 22). Lecturers could allow the same five minutes at the conclusion of the lecture in which students can make their own decision regarding participation, by voting with their feet. The Michigan Wolverines shocked the nation by pulling off a huge upset victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 14. The latest edition of "The Game" ended with a 13-10 score in favor of Michigan, and they made sure to rub this victory in Ohio State's face as much as possible. Immediately after the game ended, chaos broke out when the Wolverines planted their flag at the center of Ohio Stadium. A massive brawl broke out between the two sides with the Buckeyes taking exception to that move, as Michigan successfully managed to get under their longtime rivals' skin. That wasn't all the Wolverines did, though, as the battle raged onto social media. After the Buckeyes official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted the final score of the game, Michigan responded by adding a subtle twist that will surely make an already bad day even worse for Ohio State and their fans. 〽️〽️〽️〽️ https://t.co/hmA8IauI6B Considering all the bad blood between these two teams after their huge fight, it shouldn't be much of a surprise to see Michigan ruthlessly trolling Ohio State in the wake of this huge win. Not much has gone right for the Wolverines this year, but they managed to upstage the No. 2 ranked team in the nation in a big way on Saturday. For the Buckeyes, this loss couldn't be more catastrophic. Not only are they getting relentlessly roasted for coming up short, but they could lose their spot in the Big Ten Championship Game if the Penn State Nittany Lions beat the Maryland Terrapins in their Week 14 contest. © Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Beyond that, their standing in the College Football Playoff rankings seems set to take a big hit. While they may not fall out of the rankings entirely, there's no doubt that Ohio State is going to tumble down the list considering how badly Michigan has struggled this year. Add that onto all this trolling, and it will only make this victory better for the Wolverines. While they may not have managed to meet preseason expectations, at least the team prevailed in "The Game," while also potentially blowing up the Buckeyes' season in the process. Related: Former Ohio State Player Doesn't Hold Back on Ryan Day After Michigan LossManhattan police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione , suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, while carrying a gun, mask and writings linking him to the ambush. Mangione is being held without bail in Pennsylvania on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Late Monday, Manhattan prosecutors charged him with five counts, including murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Here's the latest: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says “violence to combat any sort of corporate greed is unacceptable” and the White House will “continue to condemn any form of violence.” She declined to comment on the investigation into the Dec. 4 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson or reports that writings belonging to the suspect, Luigi Mangione, said insurance companies care more about profits than their customers. “This is horrific,” Jean-Pierre said of the fatal shooting of Thompson as he walked in Manhattan. He didn’t appear to say anything as deputies led him to a waiting car outside. “I’m deeply grateful to the men and women of law enforcement whose efforts to solve the horrific murder of Brian Thompson led to the arrest of a suspect in Pennsylvania,” Gov. Hochul said in the statement. “I am coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office and will sign a request for a governor’s warrant to ensure this individual is tried and held accountable. Public safety is my top priority and I’ll do everything in my power to keep the streets of New York safe.” That’s according to a spokesperson for the governor who said Gov. Hochul will do it as soon as possible. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a healthcare executive in New York City, apparently was living a charmed life: the grandson of a wealthy real estate developer, valedictorian of his elite Baltimore prep school and with degrees from one of the nation’s top private universities. Friends at an exclusive co-living space at the edge of touristy Waikiki in Hawaii where the 26-year-old Mangione once lived widely considered him a “great guy,” and pictures on his social media accounts show a fit, smiling, handsome young man on beaches and at parties. Now, investigators in New York and Pennsylvania are working to piece together why Mangione may have diverged from this path to make the violent and radical decision to gun down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen attack on a Manhattan street. The killing sparked widespread discussions about corporate greed, unfairness in the medical insurance industry and even inspired folk-hero sentiment toward his killer. ▶ Read more about Luigi Mangione Peter Weeks, the Blair County district attorney, says he’ll work with New York officials to try to return suspect Luigi Mangione there to face charges. Weeks said the New York charges are “more serious” than in Blair County. “We believe their charges take precedent,” Weeks said, promising to do what’s needed to accommodate New York’s prosecution first. Weeks spoke to reporters after a brief hearing at which a defense lawyer said Mangione will fight extradition. The defense asked for a hearing on the issue. In the meantime, Mangione will be detained at a state prison in western Pennsylvania. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said Tuesday it will seek a Governor’s warrant to secure Mangione’s extradition to Manhattan. Under state law, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul can issue a warrant of arrest demanding Mangione’s return to the state. Such a warrant must recite the facts necessary to the validity of its issuance and be sealed with the state seal. It would then be presented to law enforcement in Pennsylvania to expedite Mangione’s return to New York. But Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks says it won’t be a substantial barrier to returning Mangione to New York. He noted that defendants contest extradition “all the time,” including in simple retail theft cases. Dickey, his defense lawyer, questioned whether the second-degree murder charge filed in New York might be eligible for bail under Pennsylvania law, but prosecutors raised concerns about both public safety and Mangione being a potential flight risk, and the judge denied it. Mangione will continue to be housed at a state prison in Huntingdon. He has 14 days to challenge the detention. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have a month to seek a governor’s warrant out of New York. Mangione, wearing an orange jumpsuit, mostly stared straight ahead at the hearing, occasionally consulting papers, rocking in his chair, or looking back at the gallery. At one point, he began to speak to respond to the court discussion, but was quieted by his lawyer. Luigi Mangione, 26, has also been denied bail at a brief court hearing in western Pennsylvania. He has 14 days to challenge the bail decision. That’s with some intervention from owner Elon Musk. The account, which hasn’t posted since June, was briefly suspended by X. But after a user inquired about it in a post Monday, Musk responded “This happened without my knowledge. Looking into it.” The account was later reinstated. Other social media companies such as Meta have removed his accounts. According to X rules, the platform removes “any accounts maintained by individual perpetrators of terrorist, violent extremist, or mass violent attacks, as well as any accounts glorifying the perpetrator(s), or dedicated to sharing manifestos and/or third party links where related content is hosted.” Mangione is not accused of perpetrating a terrorist or mass attack — he has been charged with murder — and his account doesn’t appear to share any writings about the case. He shouted something that was partly unintelligible, but referred to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He’s there for an arraignment on local charges stemming from his arrest Monday. He was dressed in an orange jumpsuit as officers led him from a vehicle into the courthouse. Local defense lawyer Thomas Dickey is expected to represent the 26-year-old at a Tuesday afternoon hearing at the Blair County Courthouse. Dickey declined comment before the hearing. Mangione could have the Pennsylvania charges read aloud to him and may be asked to enter a plea. They include possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. In New York, he was charged late Monday with murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain with corporate greed, said a a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that the profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of the suspect’s hand-written notes and social media postings. He appeared to view the targeted killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO as a symbolic takedown, asserting in his note that he is the “first to face it with such brutal honesty,” the bulletin said. Mangione called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski a “political revolutionary” and may have found inspiration from the man who carried out a series of bombings while railing against modern society and technology, the document said. A felony warrant filed in New York cites Altoona Officer Christy Wasser as saying she found the writings along with a semi-automatic pistol and an apparent silencer. The filing echoes earlier statements from NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny who said Mangione had a three-page, handwritten document that shows “some ill will toward corporate America.” Mangione is now charged in Pennsylvania with being a fugitive of justice. A customer at the McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested said one of his friends had commented beforehand that the man looked like the suspect wanted for the shooting in New York City. “It started out almost a little bit like a joke, my one friend thought he looked like the shooter,” said the customer, who declined to give his full name, on Tuesday. “It wasn’t really a joke, but we laughed about it,” he added. The warrant on murder and other charges is a step that could help expedite his extradition from Pennsylvania. In court papers made public Tuesday, a New York City police detective reiterated key findings in the investigation he said tied Mangione to the killing, including surveillance footage and a fake ID he used to check into a Manhattan hostel on Nov. 24. Police officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, found that ID when they arrested Mangione on Monday. Mangione doesn’t yet have a lawyer who can speak on his behalf, court officials said. Images of Mangione released Tuesday by Pennsylvania State Police showed him pulling down his mask in the corner of the McDonald’s while holding what appeared to be hash browns and wearing a winter jacket and ski cap. In another photo from a holding cell, he stood unsmiling with rumpled hair. Mangione’s cousin, Maryland lawmaker Nino Mangione, announced Tuesday morning that he’s postponing a fundraiser planned later this week at the Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore, which was purchased by the Mangione family in 1986. “Because of the nature of this terrible situation involving my Cousin I do not believe it is appropriate to hold my fundraising event scheduled for this Thursday at Hayfields,” Nino Mangione said in a social media post. “I want to thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and support. My family and I are heartbroken and ask that you remember the family of Mr. Thompson in your prayers. Thank you.” Officers used New York City’s muscular surveillance system . Investigators analyzed DNA samples, fingerprints and internet addresses. Police went door to door looking for witnesses. When an arrest came five days later , those sprawling investigative efforts shared credit with an alert civilian’s instincts. A customer at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania noticed another patron who resembled the man in the oblique security-camera photos New York police had publicized. He remains jailed in Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. By late Monday evening, prosecutors in Manhattan had added a charge of murder, according to an online court docket. It’s unclear whether Luigi Nicholas Mangione has an attorney who can comment on the allegations. Asked at Monday’s arraignment whether he needed a public defender, Mangione asked whether he could “answer that at a future date.”
HARD CORE FOLLOWERS Supporters of Vice President Sara Duterte gather at the EDSA Shrine in Ortigas, Pasig City on November 26, 2024. —Inquirer photo/Grig C. Montegrande MANILA, Philippines — A grandson of the late Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. on Saturday asked Vice President Sara Duterte to keep the Aquino name out of her feud with President Marcos, noting that values of the two most powerful political families do not align with those espoused by his grandfather. The son of one of Aquino’s daughters, Viel Aquino-Dee, who is also a co-convenor of the Buhay ang Edsa Campaign Network, did not mince words when asked about the Vice President’s remarks referring to the Aquino assassination as one of the roots of the February 1986 uprising that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. “If you don’t believe in human rights, if you don’t believe in treating people with respect ... I would rather that you don’t use the name of my grandfather,” Kiko Aquino Dee said in an interview with the Inquirer on the sidelines of the annual honoring of heroes of the antidictatorship struggle at Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City. READ: VP Duterte explains withdrawal of Edsa anniversary message The Marcoses and the Dutertes have been linked by their critics to violence and draconian policies, including suppression of press freedom. READ: Church execs urge sobriety, lament use of Edsa ‘pawns’ In an interview with reporters at the House of Representatives last week, Duterte clapped back at the statement of the President about “how easy” it was for the Vice President to plan and contract the killing of people. Marcos was reacting to a statement by the Vice President that she had arranged the assassination of the President, the first lady and Speaker Martin Romualdez if an alleged plot to kill her succeeds. Marcos vowed: “’Yan ay aking papalagan. (I will fight back against this.)” Speaking to reporters, the Vice President retorted: “’Di ba pumalag nga ’yung buong bayan nung pinatay ng pamilya nila si Benigno Aquino Jr.? (Didn’t the entire nation fight back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.),” referring to the 1983 assassination of the dictator’s arch rival. A day later, a pro-Duterte crowd gathered on the grounds of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace, popularly known as Edsa Shrine, one of the historic sites where hundreds of thousands had peacefully assembled against the dictator during the Feb. 22-Feb. 25, 1986, People Power Revolution. Shrine rector Fr. Jerome Secillano appealed to the rally organizers not to make the people “your hapless pawns,” adding that they had supposedly been exploiting the crowd “for too long.” Harry Roque, the former spokesperson for former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been actively calling Duterte supporters to rally at Edsa, saying that the “country needs us.” Roque himself, however, has not been seen at Edsa. He has been in hiding since the House quad committee issued an arrest warrant against him following a contempt citation for noncooperation with its inquiry into overseas gaming operations. The Philippine National Police reported that around 100 people had gathered at the shrine on the second day of the anti-Marcos protest. The report said the participants were “promised food and cash,” but this could not be independently confirmed by the Inquirer and some of them denied this in various media interviews. Beyond the “irony” in supporters of the Duterte family coming to the Edsa Shrine in a show of force, Dee said that this bolstered the “enduring narrative” of the Edsa revolt. “Edsa is meant to be a space for free expression. So, I can’t blame people for seeing the value of Edsa,” he said. “In the end, I can’t say that I support [their] causes.” For Historian Xiao Chua, the call for support for the Dutertes at Edsa should serve as a “learning opportunity” about the importance of peaceful dissent and free expression. He pointed out that the critics of the Dutertes had been attacked, mostly on social media, by pro-Duterte groups and personalities. “I hope they are now realizing how important it is for a functioning society to have dissent because it is lawful and that should not [result in] Red-tag[ging],” Chua said in an Inquirer interview. “Protesting without the threat of violence – that’s the spirit of Edsa. And I hope they realize that,” he said. Former President Duterte never attended any of the Edsa revolution commemoration activities during his presidency, choosing to only issue a statement to mark the event. For the 31st commemoration in 2017, he said that no single party, religion or individual could claim credit for the revolution as it belonged to the Filipino people. “It was a movement of, by, and for the Filipino people brought about by their profound love of country,” he said. Duterte stressed that the Edsa commemoration should be a “perfect time for all of us to reflect and objectively assess what we have lost and what we have gained as a nation since that historic event.” During the 32nd anniversary in 2018, he hailed the Edsa Revolution as a symbol of the country’s unwavering resolve to stand up for what is right “during our country’s most crucial and trying times.” Subscribe to our daily newsletter By providing an email address. Swinney ridiculed for claiming health minister Neil Gray took limo to glitzy premiere because movie 'was about addiction' Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport By TOM GORDON DEPUTY SCOTTISH POLITICAL EDITOR Published: 21:52, 27 November 2024 | Updated: 21:53, 27 November 2024 e-mail View comments John Swinney has been branded ‘desperate’ after claiming under-fire health secretary Neil Gray attended a glitzy film bash because the movie touched upon addiction. The First Minister said Mr Gray needed to be chauffeured in a ministerial car to the opening of the Edinburgh International Film Festival as it was ‘relevant to his portfolio’. The Scottish Tories accused Mr Swinney of ‘clutching at straws’ but the First Minister doubled down in his defence of his beleaguered colleague after the Mail revealed Mr Gray had taken an official limo to and from the gala event. Mr Gray’s wife Karlie also attended the star-studded premiere at the Cameo cinema on August 15. The Scottish Government has insisted Mr Gray was performing ‘ministerial duties’, which justified his use of taxpayer- funded transport. But the premiere was also attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson, who met with the film’s star, Saoirse Ronan , and the festival’s director and chair. That has raised questions about why Mr Gray, who is already under-fire over football trips, went as well – other than as a ‘jolly’. Government records state Mr Gray discussed ‘culture’ at a ‘reception’ held at the premiere with film quango Screen Scotland, but the First Minister yesterday claimed he went because of his health brief. Neil Gray was driven in a ministerial car to attend the film bash with his wife Karlie The event to promote movie The Outrun was already being attended by Culture Secretary Angus Robertson who met with the film's star Saoirse Ronan, above Asked by the Mail why Mr Gray needed to attend when Mr Robertson was already at the screening, Mr Swinney said it had been for ‘government business’. Asked what Mr Gray added, the SNP leader replied: ‘Well, he was attending a film which is addressing the issues of drug addiction and alcohol addiction. ‘And mental health and well-being are therefore relevant to his portfolio interests as the Cabinet Secretary for Health.’ The opening night featured the UK premiere of The Outrun, a film based on Amy Liptrot’s memoir about recovering from alcoholism in Orkney, where Mr Gray grew up. Click here to visit the Scotland home page for the latest news and sport Advertisement The Airdrie and Shotts MSP had raved on social media about how much he was looking forward to seeing The Outrun before he took on the health portfolio. While economy secretary last December, he wrote ‘Cannot wait to see this!’ and ‘Cannot wait!’ about the film, two months before he was moved to health after Michael Matheson quit over an expenses scandal. The Scottish Conservatives said Mr Gray was guilty of a ‘pattern of behaviour’ and appeared to have simply been on a ‘jolly’ at the premiere. Deputy leader Rachael Hamilton: ‘This is a desperate defence from John Swinney of his Cabinet colleague. He knows fine well that there was no justification for Neil Gray to be at this event and is clutching at straws. ‘Taxpayers are sick and tired of the SNP taking them for a ride. Honest John should have had the decency to be upfront with the public over Neil Gray’s behaviour, instead of giving this absurd response.’ Mr Gray apologised to parliament earlier this month after using his ministerial limo to attend eight football matches, four of them involving his favourite club, Aberdeen. He admitted that he had given the impression of being ‘more of a fan and less as a minister’ and said he should have ‘attended a wider range of games and not just Aberdeen’. He was also chauffeured to four Scotland international matches at Hampden Park in Glasgow. Half of the eight games were when he held the economy brief. Mr Gray, a father-of-four, took a family member or guest to five of the matches in his official car, but insisted that it had not cost the taxpayer any extra. The government has refused to say if Mr Gray used his car to pick up his wife before they attended the premiere together. A government spokesman said: ‘Ministers attend sporting and cultural events as part of their ministerial duties.’ John Swinney SNP Share or comment on this article: Pull the other one, John!
