As we visit friends and family over the holiday season, it’s always nice to take along a gift. There are, of course, many options, like a bottle of wine or a specialty food item. A bouquet of flowers, however, is one of the most meaningful and appreciated. Ever since the dark days of COVID-19, flowers have become the new "hug." They evoke a sense of happiness, and they bring a connection to nature. I love the fact that Millennial folks are growing their own cut flower gardens, even in small spaces. They love having their own source of cut flowers to enjoy in their homes and also to share as gifts with friends and neighbours. As our gardens are now dormant until spring, we are fortunate to have so many local, high-quality cut flower growers here in B.C. For that matter, they are now exporting cut flowers to other provinces and to the United States, and their selection is amazing, ranging from roses, orchid stems, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias, lilies, gerbera daisies and fragrant stocks to Ilex berries and skimmia flowers. Because of all their innovation and use of technology, their carbon footprint is quite low. If you are considering a gift of flowers, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. The first is the lasting quality, especially in our warm, dry houses at this time of the year. Most cut flowers will deliver a week to ten days of enjoyment, while others can last for weeks. Always try to purchase flowers which are on the tight side and just beginning to open. Today, chrysanthemums are spectacular, both the spray type with multiple flowers and the single stem disbuds. They are available in so many new colours and various flower forms. Alstroemerias come in a wide range of colours and are noted for their long-lasting appeal. Tight lilies, both the colourful Asiatics and the fragrant Orientals, also last well. Roses are classy, and the spray forms, with their multiple smaller buds, have exceptional lasting qualities. Carnations, too, offer multi-flowered elegance. I love wax flowers with their masses of tiny blossoms that add a nice touch to any bouquet. Berry stems, like hypericum, also hang in there very well. Fragrance is an important consideration in any bouquet. Oriental lilies, freesias and Polianthes tuberosa will never disappoint. Eucalyptus has also become a favourite because of its unique perfume. At this time of the year, accessorizing bouquets with perfumed greens, such as small branches of soft white pine, silver fir or incense cedar, will add a pleasing forest scent. Your gift of flowers will be a much-appreciated bouquet of beauty and perfume to be enjoyed, possibly for weeks!DALLAS — After a deep postseason that saw Luka Doncic effectively lead all offensive categories into his first NBA Finals run, followed by only a brief summer rest before competing for Slovenia at the Olympics, the wear and tear on the franchise star finally saw the “check engine” light turn on. Dallas received a blow to their 2025 chances on Christmas Day when Doncic left the Western Conference Finals rematch against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a left calf strain, logging just 16 minutes in the loss. Doncic, currently the West’s top scoring guard, will be away from action through January, effectively removing him from MVP consideration and leaving the Mavericks facing a tough test to start the new year. Please embed this tweet: Luka Dončić injury update: Luka sustained a left calf strain on Christmas Day. Dončić will be re-evaluated within one month. Wishing @luka7doncic a speedy recovery. We know you will come back stronger than ever. #MFFL pic.twitter.com/gTBWkfFZNX Luckily for Dallas, this was a scenario that they are better prepared for than at any point in Doncic’s career. The ability to weather a Luka absence remains promising after the front office spent the last couple of years trying to build competitive depth around their star point guard. Their gritty 98-89 win over the Phoenix Suns in their first game without Doncic showed that depth and their resolve. Five Mavs reached double digits and none scored more than 20 as spreading the looks proved fruitful. More importantly, with the tough road ahead, the team showed that they have each other’s backs when they scuffled with Suns’ enforcer Jusef Nurkic. That P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall came to Daniel Gafford’s aid during that tussle might have landed them suspensions , but it also was the type of rallying point that can take them through the upcoming gauntlet as they await their anchor. It won’t be easy, of course, not without Doncic who often acts as the engine that makes the offense go as one the league’s best players. To that point, even with the win over Phoenix, the team is 1-2 since losing Doncic. The good news is they’ve remained competitive, losing by no more than six points in either loss, but their vaunted depth is starting to get challenged. Dereck Lively II, Washington, and Marshall missed Friday night’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, leading to increased minutes for end-of-bench players Dwight Powell, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and Maxi Kleber. Marshall will miss three additional games serving his suspension for punching Nurkic, with Kyrie Irving continuing his ascension to team leader by covering the fines. Irving will also be looked at to shoulder the load of go-to threat in Doncic’s absence, which will make watching his minutes crucial to avoid the wheels falling off come playoff time for the 32-year-old. Irving played 37 minutes against Minnesota and 40 in the Phoenix win before logging 26 shots in just under 40 minutes against the Blazers. His effort in Portland was the highest-scoring night of the season for Irving, attaining 46 points after dropping 39 on Christmas. The absurd career-high shooting percentages continued for Irving, with 62% from two, 41% from deep, and a perfect 100% on free throws. Irving has been superb this season, sandwiched between Doncic and De’Aaron Fox among the Western Conference leaders in scoring for guards. Dallas enters the final week of 2024 with a 20-12 record, fourth in the standings in the West, and two games out of second. They’ve done well to show that their run in the playoffs wasn’t a fluke. Now they’ll have to show that they’ve built a team that can still win games even without Doncic. Keeping their run going in Luka’s absence may not hand Irving his own MVP votes, but he will surely deserve a ninth All-Star appearance, which would be his first as a Maverick. Dallas has one more date with 2024 in a Monday night matchup versus the rudderless Kings. Sacramento is 12th in the West and has just dismissed the reigning NBA Coach of the Year Mike Brown in an effort to keep superstar Fox in the fold. The Mavs will then welcome the new year with a contest against the surprising third-place Houston Rockets in a New Year’s Day duel that begins their January marathon, the first of 16 games in 31 days without Doncic. Do you think the Mavs can survive the upcoming onslaught without their All-NBA star? Share your thoughts with Irvin on Bluesky @irvin.bsky.social .10jili online casino login

'Ten out of ten' Netflix film is dubbed 'the best movie ever' by fansBy MIKE FITZPATRICK AP Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Same iconic statue, very different race. With two-way star Travis Hunter of Colorado and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty leading the field, these certainly aren’t your typical Heisman Trophy contenders. Sure, veteran quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel from the top-ranked Oregon Ducks and Cam Ward of No. 15 Miami are finalists for college football’s most prestigious award as well, but the 90th annual ceremony coming up Saturday night at Lincoln Center in New York City offers a fresh flavor this year. To start with, none of the four are from the powerhouse Southeastern Conference, which has produced four of the past five Heisman winners — two each from Alabama and LSU. Jeanty, who played his home games for a Group of Five team on that peculiar blue turf in Idaho more than 2,100 miles from Manhattan, is the first running back even invited to the Heisman party since 2017. After leading the country with 2,497 yards rushing and 29 touchdowns, he joined quarterback Kellen Moore (2010) as the only Boise State players to be named a finalist. “The running back position has been overlooked for a while now,” said Jeanty, who plans to enter the 2025 NFL draft. “There’s been a lot of great running backs before me that should have been here in New York, so to kind of carry on the legacy of the running back position I think is great. ... I feel as if I’m representing the whole position.” With the votes already in, all four finalists spent Friday conducting interviews and sightseeing in the Big Apple. They were given custom, commemorative watches to mark their achievement. “I’m not a watch guy, but I like it,” said Hunter, flashing a smile. The players also took photos beneath the massive billboards in Times Square and later posed with the famous Heisman Trophy, handed out since 1935 to the nation’s most outstanding performer. Hunter, the heavy favorite, made sure not to touch it yet. A dominant player on both offense and defense who rarely comes off the field, the wide receiver/cornerback is a throwback to generations gone by and the first full-time, true two-way star in decades. On offense, he had 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns this season to help the 20th-ranked Buffaloes (9-3) earn their first bowl bid in four years. On defense, he made four interceptions, broke up 11 passes and forced a critical fumble that secured an overtime victory against Baylor. Hunter played 688 defensive snaps and 672 more on offense — the only Power Four conference player with 30-plus snaps on both sides of the ball, according to Colorado research. Call him college football’s answer to baseball unicorn Shohei Ohtani. “I think I laid the ground for more people to come in and go two ways,” Hunter said. “It starts with your mindset. If you believe you can do it, then you’ll be able to do it. And also, I do a lot of treatment. I keep up with my body. I get a lot of recovery.” Hunter is Colorado’s first Heisman finalist in 30 years. The junior from Suwanee, Georgia, followed flashy coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State, an HBCU that plays in the lower level FCS, to the Rocky Mountains and has already racked up a staggering combination of accolades this week, including The Associated Press player of the year. Hunter also won the Walter Camp Award as national player of the year, along with the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for best wide receiver. “It just goes to show that I did what I had to do,” Hunter said. Next, he’d like to polish off his impressive hardware collection by becoming the second Heisman Trophy recipient in Buffaloes history, after late running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994. “I worked so hard for this moment, so securing the Heisman definitely would set my legacy in college football,” Hunter said. “Being here now is like a dream come true.” Jeanty carried No. 8 Boise State (12-1) to a Mountain West Conference championship that landed the Broncos the third seed in this year’s College Football Playoff. They have a first-round bye before facing the SMU-Penn State winner in the Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal on New Year’s Eve. The 5-foot-9, 215-pound junior from Jacksonville, Florida, won the Maxwell Award as college football’s top player and the Doak Walker Award for best running back. Jeanty has five touchdown runs of at least 70 yards and has rushed for the fourth-most yards in a season in FBS history — topping the total of 115 teams this year. He needs 132 yards to break the FBS record set by Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders at Oklahoma State in 1988. In a pass-happy era, however, Jeanty is trying to become the first running back to win the Heisman Trophy since Derrick Henry for Alabama nine years ago. In fact, quarterbacks have snagged the prize all but four times this century. Gabriel, an Oklahoma transfer, led Oregon (13-0) to a Big Ten title in its first season in the league and the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. The steady senior from Hawaii passed for 3,558 yards and 28 touchdowns with six interceptions. His 73.2% completion rate ranks second in the nation, and he’s attempting to join quarterback Marcus Mariota (2014) as Ducks players to win the Heisman Trophy. “I think all the memories start to roll back in your mind,” Gabriel said. Ward threw for 4,123 yards and led the nation with a school-record 36 touchdown passes for the high-scoring Hurricanes (10-2) after transferring from Washington State. The senior from West Columbia, Texas, won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Year award and is looking to join QBs Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992) as Miami players to go home with the Heisman. “I just think there’s a recklessness that you have to play with at the quarterback position,” Ward said. —The Associated PressSTARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Josh Hubbard scored 14 of his team-high 25 points in the final 10 minutes and Mississippi State pulled away late to post a 91-84 win over a road-weary Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon. Prairie View A&M, playing its eighth straight road game after a season-opening win over a non-NCAA opponent, will not play its second home game until it hosts Grambling in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener January 4. The Panthers have surrendered 100 points or more in three games and opponents have topped 90 points in seven of their eight road losses. Mississippi State (8-1), fresh off a dominating performance in a 90-57 win over No. 18 Pitt in the SEC/ACC Men's Challenge, got all it could handle from the Panthers. The teams were tied at the break at 44-44 and Tanahj Pettway hit from deep to give Prairie View the lead, 65-64 midway through the second half. The Bulldogs responded with a 16-2 run kick-started by a pair of Josh Hubbard layups and a Claudell Harris Jr., 3 and capped by a Hubbard 3 and a Jordan Tillmon layup to take an 80-68 lead with under five minutes to play. Hubbard hit 4 of 10 from beyond the arc and had three assists and a pair of steals. Harris came off the bench to hit 3 of 6 from deep to add 21 points. “Saturday Night Live” swung at and missed with some of their audience this weekend. The sketch comedy show came under fire after spending nearly a minute and a half of its “Weekend Update” segment discussing the recent murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , including America’s fascination with the alleged gunman’s appearance. “The manhunt continues for the assassin who gunned down the CEO of United Healthcare on Wednesday, and it really says something about America that a guy was murdered in cold blood and the two main reactions were, ‘Yeah, well health care stinks!’ And also, ‘Girl, that shooter hot,'” co-host Colin Jost quipped. Users on several social media platforms voiced their disdain of the commentary, condemning it for a lack of consideration of Thompson’s family. The businessman, 50, and his wife had two sons together. “Disgusting. I couldn’t watch this segment. The victim’s family and friends are very much grieving right now,” one person wrote beneath a YouTube clip of the segment. “Agreed. I don’t usually watch SNL, and I can see by the segment and comments supporting it, that I will no longer be watching it. Joking about someone’s murder like that is absolutely disgusting... a family is grieving right now,” a person responded. “I mean is the shooter single??” another user commented, affirming Jost’s narrative. A day after the brutal Wednesday shooting, the NYPD released their first image of the suspected gunman without a mask, seen smiling. “New York City police say that they were able to get the smiling picture of the suspect after the man apparently was caught on camera at a local hostel, flirting with a female employee, whose name has been reported as, ‘Lucky S. Bechalive,'” co-host Michael Che joked. “Classless,” a user on X wrote. “Long time viewer of SNL. I don’t consider myself particularly [sensitive] to any topic, but in today’s Weekend Update edition they made jokes about the United Health CEO gunned down in NYC. That was really distasteful and disrespectful. SNL, you need to do better,” another spewed. Jost also took aim at officials, in particular, the NYPD. “This week, New York City officials sent a tough message on crime: ‘If you shoot somebody in the middle of the street, you better get on your bike, hop on a bus, and get the heck out of here, mister,’” he began. “It’s also so crazy that the shooting happened three blocks from here in broad daylight, and the guy just bicycled away. Probably because they have every cop in the city guarding our Christmas tree,” Jost said, referencing the Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Plaza, which occurred on the same day. “The NYPD now believes the suspect left the city on a bus from Port Authority. Thanks, but a Port Authority passenger who looks like a murderer actually widens the search,” Jost said as his final joke on the topic. Additional viewers found the segment to be amusing, with several enjoying the Port Authority joke. Representatives for “Saturday Night Live” did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.Donald Trump is reiterating his threat to impose steep tariffs on Canadian goods if the federal government doesn't take action on border security — and a former official from his first administration says the U.S. president-elect isn't bluffing. "I'm a big believer in tariffs. I think tariffs are the most beautiful word.... It's going to make us rich," Trump said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press that aired on Sunday. The president-elect continued to extol the power of tariffs and said they're "a powerful tool not only economically, but also for getting other things outside of economics." Analysis Trump's tariff threat is testing both Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre As an example, Trump referred to his threat to slap a 25 per cent tariff on products from Canada and Mexico unless they curb the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders. Four days after the threat was issued, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau flew to Trump's estate in Florida for a surprise dinner. The president-elect joked about the saga in his NBC interview. "In fact, [Trudeau] flew to Mar-a-Lago within about 15 seconds after the call," Trump said. The president-elect also said he told Trudeau that Canada has to "close up" its border and that "drugs are pouring in at levels never seen before." "And I said to the president of Mexico and to Justin Trudeau, if it doesn't stop, I'm going to put tariffs on your country at about 25 per cent," Trump said. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dined with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump in late November. Trump described the meeting as 'very productive' on his social media platform Truth Social. (@JustinTrudeau/X) Trump's threat is 'serious,' says former official Ken Cuccinelli, a former official in the Department of Homeland Security during Trump's first administration, said the president-elect's tariff threat is "very serious" given the issues at hand. "And I think one of the things that people around the world know about Donald Trump is that he will follow through with things like this," Cuccinelli said in an interview on Rosemary Barton Live that aired Sunday. When asked what he thinks can be done to protect the Canada-U.S. border, Cuccinelli said that he "wouldn't expect the president to give the prime minister a checklist." WATCH: Former official discusses Trump's border concerns and deportation plan: What will Canada-U.S. border security look like under Trump? 3 hours ago Duration 9:41 In a Canadian exclusive, CBC chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton speaks with Ken Cuccinelli, a former official in the Department of Homeland Security under Donald Trump, about what the U.S. president-elect expects from Canada on border security, and what his deportation plan could look like. The goal isn't "zero illegal crossings," he added. Instead, it's about driving them down to "the point where it's not worth people trying to, for example, come to Canada as a way to get into the United States." What Trump specifically wants from Canada in exchange for removing his tariff threat still isn't clear, according to Canadian officials familiar with the details of the surprise dinner in Florida. The federal government has made some announcements in the wake of the Trudeau-Trump meeting, including adding more helicopters and drones to tighten up monitoring of the Canada-U.S. border. Canada to buy helicopters, drones to meet Trump's demand for tighter border security The takeaway from Trudeau's trip to Mar-a-Lago: For Trump, fentanyl is priority No. 1 David Cohen, the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Canada, said the Biden administration has not proposed a 25 per cent across-the-board tariff because of concerns it would contribute to inflation and lead to job losses in both countries. "I think in the end, the value of that from a trade perspective is not going to be very compelling," he told Rosemary Barton. Cohen also said there's a "pretty clear window" for Canada and the United States to work through the issues underlying Trump's tariff threat.
