NoneNumber of women who are state lawmakers inches up to a record highBy SARAH PARVINI, GARANCE BURKE and JESSE BEDAYN, Associated Press President-elect Donald Trump will return to power next year with a raft of technological tools at his disposal that would help deliver his campaign promise of cracking down on immigration — among them, surveillance and artificial intelligence technology that the Biden administration already uses to help make crucial decisions in tracking, detaining and ultimately deporting immigrants lacking permanent legal status. While immigration officials have used the tech for years, an October letter from the Department of Homeland Security obtained exclusively by The Associated Press details how those tools — some of them powered by AI — help make life-altering decisions for immigrants, including whether they should be detained or surveilled. One algorithm, for example, ranks immigrants with a “Hurricane Score,” ranging from 1-5, to assess whether someone will “abscond” from the agency’s supervision. The letter, sent by DHS Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Eric Hysen to the immigrant rights group Just Futures Law, revealed that the score calculates the potential risk that an immigrant — with a pending case — will fail to check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The algorithm relies on several factors, he said, including an immigrant’s number of violations and length of time in the program, and whether the person has a travel document. Hysen wrote that ICE officers consider the score, among other information, when making decisions about an immigrant’s case. “The Hurricane Score does not make decisions on detention, deportation, or surveillance; instead, it is used to inform human decision-making,” Hysen wrote. Also included in the government’s tool kit is a mobile app called SmartLINK that uses facial matching and can track an immigrant’s specific location. Nearly 200,000 people without legal status who are in removal proceedings are enrolled in the Alternatives to Detention program, under which certain immigrants can live in the U.S. while their immigration cases are pending. In exchange, SmartLINK and GPS trackers used by ICE rigorously surveil them and their movements. The phone application draws on facial matching technology and geolocation data, which has been used before to find and arrest those using the app. Just Futures Law wrote to Hysen earlier this year, questioning the fairness of using an algorithm to assess whether someone is a flight risk and raising concerns over how much data SmartLINK collects. Such AI systems, which score or screen people, are used widely but remain largely unregulated even though some have been found to discriminate on race, gender or other protected traits. DHS said in an email that it is committed to ensuring that its use of AI is transparent and safeguards privacy and civil rights while avoiding biases. The agency said it is working to implement the Biden administration’s requirements on using AI , but Hysen said in his letter that security officials may waive those requirements for certain uses. Trump has publicly vowed to repeal Biden’s AI policy when he returns to the White House in January. “DHS uses AI to assist our personnel in their work, but DHS does not use the outputs of AI systems as the sole basis for any law enforcement action or denial of benefits,” a spokesperson for DHS told the AP. Trump has not revealed how he plans to carry out his promised deportation of an estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally. Although he has proposed invoking wartime powers, as well as military involvement, the plan would face major logistical challenges — such as where to keep those who have been detained and how to find people spread across the country — that AI-powered surveillance tools could potentially address. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump, did not answer questions about how they plan to use DHS’ tech, but said in a statement that “President Trump will marshal every federal and state power necessary to institute the largest deportation operation” in American history. Over 100 civil society groups sent a letter on Friday urging the Office of Management and Budget to require DHS to comply with the Biden administration’s guidelines. OMB did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Just Futures Law’s executive director, Paromita Shah, said if immigrants are scored as flight risks, they are more likely to remain in detention, “limiting their ability to prepare a defense in their case in immigration court, which is already difficult enough as it is.” SmartLINK, part of the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program, is run by BI Inc., a subsidiary of the private prison company The GEO Group. The GEO Group also contracts with ICE to run detention centers. ICE is tight-lipped about how it uses SmartLINK’s location feature to find and arrest immigrants. Still, public records show that during Trump’s first term in 2018, Manassas, Virginia-based employees of BI Inc. relayed immigrants’ GPS locations to federal authorities, who then arrested over 40 people. In a report last year to address privacy issues and concerns, DHS said that the mobile app includes security features that “prohibit access to information on the participant’s mobile device, with the exception of location data points when the app is open.” But the report notes that there remains a risk that data collected from people “may be misused for unauthorized persistent monitoring.” Such information could also be stored in other ICE and DHS databases and used for other DHS mission purposes, the report said. On investor calls earlier this month, private prison companies were clear-eyed about the opportunities ahead. The GEO Group’s executive chairman George Christopher Zoley said that he expects the incoming Trump administration to “take a much more aggressive approach regarding border security as well as interior enforcement and to request additional funding from Congress to achieve these goals.” “In GEO’s ISAP program, we can scale up from the present 182,500 participants to several hundreds of thousands, or even millions of participants,” Zoley said. That same day, the head of another private prison company told investors he would be watching closely to see how the new administration may change immigrant monitoring programs. “It’s an opportunity for multiple vendors to engage ICE about the program going forward and think about creative and innovative solutions to not only get better outcomes, but also scale up the program as necessary,” Damon Hininger, CEO of the private prison company CoreCivic Inc. said on an earnings call. GEO did not respond to requests for comment. In a statement, CoreCivic said that it has played “a valued but limited role in America’s immigration system” for both Democrats and Republicans for over 40 years.is ph365 legit

Top Democrat slams Pete Hegseth's military record as Trump's Defense Secretary nominee comes under fire READ MORE: Betting odds show Hegseth's confirmation most in jeopardy Sign up for the latest with DailyMail.com's U.S. politics newsletter By SARAH EWALL-WICE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM IN WASHINGTON, DC Published: 20:49, 24 November 2024 | Updated: 20:52, 24 November 2024 e-mail View comments Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth slammed President-elect Donald Trump 's pick for defense secretary Pete Hegseth's military record as 'pretty low rank' as he faces scrutiny for controversial comments he made about women serving in combat. Duckworth, who is a combat veteran who lost both her legs and mobility in one arm serving in Iraq , appeared on CBS News' Face the Nation where she was asked about the TV personality tapped to head the Pentagon . She said his comments about women in combat show he does not understand where the military is and called him unqualified for the role. 'He was a pretty low ranking guy in the military, and he never had a command position. He was a platoon leader, I think, once or twice, but he never even commanded a company,' Duckworth said. 'And so this is a man who is inordinately, unqualified for the position,' she went on. Duckworth was responding to Hegseth claiming women make fighting more complicated. Trump made waves when he named Hegseth, a former Fox News television personality, author and veteran, as his nominee. The 44-year-old is now under the microscope not only for his comments about women in combat and experience but also for a sexual assault allegation. Pete Hegseth, Trump's nominee for defense secretary, speaking to reporters on the hill. Senator Tammy Duckworth slammed his qualifications to lead the Pentagon, calling him a 'pretty low ranking guy in the military.' Hegseth served in the Minnesota National Guard and later Army National Guard where he served as an infantryman in Iraq and counterinsurgency instructor in Afghanistan. He was also part of a security platoon at Guantanamo Bay. But the Trump nominee does not have senior military or national security experience. 'I'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. It hasn't made us more effective, hasn't made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated, Hegseth said in a podcast hosted by Shawn Ryan earlier this month. But Duckworth said that the U.S. military could not go to war without the 220,000 women who serve and argued women serving in combat have met the same standards as men. ' The women in our military does make us more effective, does make us more lethal,' she said. She called Hegseth's claims about women in the military 'flat out wrong.' 'America's daughters are just as capable of defending liberty and freedom as her sons,' she said. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) rejected Hegseth's opposition to women serving in combat. She said he is 'flat out wrong' Hegseth was on Capitol Hill last week where he met with Republican senators as he works to lock in support ahead of what is expected to be a bruising confirmation battle. Read More EXCLUSIVE Defense Sec. pick Pete Hegseth had baby with Fox News lover weeks before drunken sex assault claim Duckworth, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, argued Hegseth not only lacks senior military experience but has also never lead anything comparable in size to the U.S. military with its three million service members and $900 billion budget. At the same time, Hegseth is also facing scrutiny over an allegation of sexual assault. The alleged incident took place at a California hotel in 2017. A woman told police Hegseth sexually assaulted her after refusing to let her leave the hotel, according to the police report. The former Fox News personality denies the allegations and said it was consensual, but he did pay the woman off. Charges were never brought. Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni said Thursday her office declined to prosecutor because they did not have proof 'beyond a reasonable doubt.' Hegseth was accused of sexual assault by a woman in 2017. He denied the allegation but paid the woman to stay quiet. He was not charged Duckworth said it was up to Republicans whether they hear from Hegseth's accuser but suggested it was unlikely with GOP colleagues willing to 'roll over' for Trump. She said she will be raising questions and blasted the president-elect nominating someone accused of assault and claimed it was not the kind of person who should be leading the Defense Department. 'Remember that we've just fought over a decade of fights and- and overhauled the military and its treatment of military sexual trauma,' Duckworth said. 'It's frankly an insult and really troubling that Mr. Trump would nominate someone who has admitted that he's paid off a victim who has claimed rape allegations against him,' she went on. Dr. Joseph Whittal, Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has announced that the commission has trained 300 personnel to monitor polling centers nationwide during Ghana’s December 7 elections. Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on December 3, Dr. Whittal explained that the personnel would be deployed across the country to observe and record activities at voting stations to ensure the integrity, transparency, and fairness of the elections. “For the 2024 elections, we are going to deploy 300 staff across the length and breadth of the country who will observe the elections, but with a tool, a checklist that will enable us to monitor the right to vote,” he said. In addition, Dr. Whittal emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the electoral process, particularly as December 3 marks the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. He urged election officials to prioritize the needs of persons with disabilities, ensuring that they are able to fully participate in the elections without barriers. Dr. Whittal also addressed the issue of election integrity, criticizing Lydia Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, for distributing food during Monday’s special voting exercise. He labeled the action as inappropriate, noting that it could compromise the credibility of the electoral process. “I know the Member of Parliament has denied it, but it is not right to treat, treat as in the legal term, to share food, to share money, to anybody in the queue in preparation to vote, because it is tantamount to corruption and an integrity issue,” he said during an interview with TV3. Dr. Whittal’s comments come as Ghana prepares for a crucial electoral period, amid growing calls for political actors to maintain ethical standards and preserve the integrity of the democratic process.BBC Strictly fans issue the same complaint as Sugababes perform live

If you need to open the book on your computer, disable third-party plugins and JavaScript execution in your e-settings readers. Before opening a PDF file, use antivirus software to scan it for viruses. Do not click any links within the book or document. If you suspect a PDF file has already infected your computer, run a full antimalware scan using your antivirus program. Bank of America became FIFA’s first global banking partner in August and sealed a separate deal for a second event also being played in the United States, two days before the group-stage draw in Miami for the revamped 32-team club event . It features recent European champions Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea. “FIFA is going to take America by storm and we’re going to be right at their side,” the bank’s head of marketing, David Tyrie, said in a telephone interview Tuesday. Bank of America joins 2026 World Cup sponsors Hisense and Budweiser brewer AB InBev in separately also backing the club event, and more deals are expected after Saudi Arabia is confirmed next week as the 2034 World Cup host. While games at the next World Cup, co-hosted with Canada and Mexico, will be watched by hundreds of millions globally mostly on free-to-air public networks, the Club World Cup broadcast picture is unclear. FIFA has promised hundreds of millions of dollars in prize money for the 32 clubs to share but is yet to announce any broadcast deals for the month-long tournament. It is expected to land on a streaming service. “You have to think about how you are going to connect with these fans,” Tyrie told the Associated Press from Boston. “TV is one, sure, social media is a big avenue. “The smart marketing capabilities are able to say ‘Hey, we need to tilt this one a little bit more away from TV-type marketing into social-type marketing.’ We have got a pretty decent strategy that we’re putting in place to do activation.” Engaging Bank of America’s customers and 250,000 employees are key to that strategy, Tyrie said. “It’s going to be for our clients, and entertainment, it’s going to be for our employees in creating excitement. All of the above.” The Club World Cup will be played in 12 stadiums across 11 cities, including Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C, and Lumen Field where the hometown Seattle Sounders play three group-stage games. European powers Madrid, Man City and Bayern Munich lead a 12-strong European challenge. Teams qualified by winning continental titles or posting consistently good results across four years of those competitions. The exception is Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, who FIFA gave the entry reserved for a host nation team in October based on regular season record without waiting for the MLS Cup final. LA Galaxy hosts New York Red Bulls playing for that national title Saturday. Messi’s team opens the FIFA tournament June 15 in the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium and will play its three group games in Florida. “The more brand players you bring in, the bigger the following you have got,” Tyrie acknowledged, though adding Messi being involved was “not a make or break for the event.” The Club World Cup final is July 13 at Met Life Stadium near New York, which also will host the World Cup final one year later. The market of robotics is expanding steadily. Moderate estimates suggest that revenue in the robotics market will cross US$46 billion in 2024 . In this market, service robotics dominated the space by going past a volume of US$36 billion. The annual growth rate of the robotics market, despite being a mature space by now, is close to 10%. At this rate, the field of robotics will be responsible for a market volume of more than US$73 billion by 2029. This staggering growth rate of robotics suggests that its presence has been widespread. Initially, people believed that robotics would mostly aid industries that involve heavy types of machinery and equipment. However, in reality, it has spread over to many sectors initially thought to be highly unlikely to adopt robotics. The latest update from a team of researchers working at the Technical University of Munich tells us about the curious innovation of robotic trousers. What are these trousers, and how do they work? Let us see in the next segment. Robotic Shorts: Supporting People When Walking The Technical University of Munich researchers have come up with robotic trousers for people to walk more comfortably while spending measurably less energy. The end goal is to empower frail individuals and keep the elderly mobile and healthy for a long time. While summarizing the uniqueness of the invention and helping us better understand its purpose, Lorenzio Masia, a professor from TUM, said the following: “We have developed a system that makes people want to move around more. It's the same concept as the electric bike, but for walking.” The invention was driven by a vision. While we would discuss the context of it in greater detail, we must know that the research involved a group of ten, and the detailed scientific study was published in Nature Machine Intelligence, 2024, under the title, ‘ Soft robotic shorts improve outdoor walking efficiency in older adults. ‘ And finally, the robotic trouser solution was named ‘WalkON.' What Inspired WalkON? It started with the somewhat common observation that we all know of. People's walking efficiency declines as they grow older. Mobility gets constrained, hampering independence and quality of life. Outside the controlled laboratory setup, there was hardly any wearable assistive technology that could prove effective as a potential solution for age-related movement challenges. To address these challenges came the WalkON robotic shorts. They work as a pair of soft robotic shorts designed to enhance walking efficiency for older individuals by assisting with hip flexion. The system benefits immensely from a well-thought-out, compact, and lightweight tendon-driven design that uses a controller based on natural leg movements to autonomously assist leg propagation. The researchers tested the impact of WalkON by conducting a technology assessment with young adults on a demanding outdoor uphill 500 m hiking trail. Next, they validated their findings with a group of older adults walking on a flat outdoor 400 m track. Click here to learn how new additive manufacturing help soft robotics go real. The Impact of WalkON The impact of WalkON was evident. It reduced the metabolic cost of transport by nearly 18% for young adults. Participants reported a high perceived control, with a mean score of 6.20 out of 7 on a Likert scale. For older adults, the metabolic cost was reduced by nearly 10.5%. How Does WalkON Work? In transitioning from standing to walking, two artificial tendons extending from the thigh to a waist belt are pulled upwards, relieving the hip flexors of some of their load. To determine the hip angle and velocity, a measuring device is attached to the tendons. This device sends a signal to the motors precisely at the transition point to the swing phase of walking. According to researcher and doctoral student Enrica Tricomi: “The system recognizes how fast or slowly the person is moving, adapts to the respective weight of the legs, and provides individual support accordingly.” This happens regardless of who is wearing the shorts – an old person or a fit and sporty teenager. The Future Vision for WalkON While the researchers have firmly established the impact of WalkON, the vision for the future goes far beyond what it has achieved today. Lorenzo Masia believes that the impact on metabolism has long-term positive implications for health. “Walking helps them to improve their metabolism, which in turn may have a positive effect on their illness.” – Masia The design of the solution is such that it creates a category for itself. Unlike the already available exoskeleton systems, WalkON does not have a rigid frame. It is rather a soft garment that works more like clothing. Talking about the potential of the solution, Prof Lorenzo Masia said: “In a few years, you will buy a pair of shorts, attach a motor to them, and plug in two cables. The system will then be ready to take you into the mountains.” Robotic shorts point towards something larger: a trend suggesting that robotics could become ubiquitous across various fields—from textile to health and the combination of it. In the coming segments, we look at three companies that are doing stellar work in the field of robotics. Click here to learn how robotics can take a cue from nature. 1. NVIDIA ( NVDA -3.22% ) NVIDIA stands out in merging AI with robotics, recognizing the growing demand for autonomous machines and AI-enabled robots. Industries are increasingly looking to improve operational efficiency, combat workforce shortages, optimize repetitive tasks, and manage dangerous tasks or environments. Realizing the potential of AI robots to easily adapt, learn, and perform complex tasks with precision, the company has come up with NVIDIA Robotics for developers to leverage full-stack, accelerated cloud-to-edge systems. Moreover, the company offers acceleration libraries, optimized AI models, and robot-optimizing systems and software. The AI robot development platform of NVIDIA is known as Isaac. It has AI models and application frameworks that help accelerate the development of AI robots, including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), manipulators, and humanoids. The Isaac Manipulator workflow, for instance, helps build AI-enabled robot arms—or manipulators—that can seamlessly perceive, understand, and interact with their environments. The Isaac perceptor helps quickly develop autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that can perceive, localize, and operate in unstructured environments like warehouses or factories. Project Groot is an exciting initiative that helps build a general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots that inputs multi-modal instructions and past interactions and outputs robot actions. To give an insight into how robotics companies use NVIDIA's expertise to build robotic solutions, we can look at the example of Galbot , a robotics company that used NVIDIA Isaac Sim, a reference application for robotics simulation. Galbot used it to validate a vast number of grasps to develop DexGraspNet, a comprehensive simulated dataset for dexterous robotic grasps that can be applied to any dexterous robotic hand. The volume of variations that could be achieved is mind-boggling , to say the least . DexGraspNet contains 1.32 million ShadowHand grasps on 5,355 objects—two orders of magnitude larger than the previous Deep Differentiable Grasp dataset. It covers more than 133 object categories and contains more than 200 diverse grasps for each object instance. Many such examples are available in the public domain, where NVIDIA's solution has helped significantly expedite and accelerate the process of building robotic solutions. With over 30 years of experience in robotics, the company designs and builds innovative home robots, including the Roomba robot vacuum and the Brava family of mopping robots. iRobot has developed its exclusive operating system that lets users control where, when, and how their robots clean. iRobots most powerful Roomba Combo 10 Max + Autowash Dock, for instance, comes with a host of features, including a retractable mop arm, 100%-enhanced power-lifting solution, a smart scrub that can deliver 2X deeper scrubbing, an automatic dirt disposal system and more. Its smart features make these robots more convenient and seamless for daily, continuous use. For instance, it can start cleaning at the user's voice command, it is compatible with Alexa, Google, and Siri, and it can clean even when the user is away. Today, iRobot stands as a global enterprise that has sold more than 50 million robots worldwide. Its product portfolio features technologies and advanced concepts in cleaning, mapping, and navigation. Honoring this accomplishment, the company launched a new product line in April 2024. Barry Schliesmann, chief product officer at iRobot, marking the importance of this event, had the following to say: “As iRobot surpasses more than 50 million robots sold worldwide, we're honoring that legacy with the introduction of the affordable Roomba Combo Essential, which cleans even better and does more than its predecessor.” He added: “This robot makes the iRobot 2-in-1 cleaning experience more accessible to all, be it a recent graduate, a new homeowner, or anyone looking to enjoy the benefits of automated cleaning for the first time.” Essentially, the iRobot solution caters to a wide range of everyday users who are not working in a tech-intensive, industrialized setup. On February 26, 2024, iRobot published its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year on December 30, 2023. The quarterly revenue was US$307.5 million, while the yearly revenue was US$890.6 million. The Future of Robotics Robots are becoming more and more integrated into our daily lives. There are several areas where robots are entering at a pace faster than anticipated. The emergence of AI has led to the development of sophisticated humanoid robots. However, experts believe that the future of robots and the field of robotics will thrive on collaboration. They will work hand-in-hand with humans and not replace them. The proponents of this belief cite the examples of cobots or collaborative robots to assist in factories, construction, hospitals, and even homes. These robots are specialized in design and form to seamlessly merge into existing infrastructure and human expertise to unlock true productivity gains. The global cobot market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. In 2023, the commercial service robotics market in Europe generated around 6.82 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, making it the leading region in the global commercial service robotics market by revenue. In the same year, North America also reported over 5.78 billion U.S. dollars in commercial service robotics revenue. A relevant study was conducted by Müller and Bostrom (2016) , who collected opinions from researchers in the field, including highly cited experts, to get their views on the future. The median estimate of respondents was that there is a one in two chance that high-level machine intelligence will be developed around 2040–2050. However, the chances rose to a 9 in 10 chance by 2075. These experts expected that systems would move on to superintelligence in less than 30 years thereafter. These estimates sound ambitious and exciting. But the more important question to ask is how near robots should come to humanity! While the ambit of robotics keeps growing, we must remember that the use of robotics has to be ethical. Its job is to make the lives of people easier. It can help improve healthcare, conduct delivery of essential services in remote areas, help disseminate knowledge, and leave a positive impact on many more essential areas. However, the rampant and abundant use of robotic applications without checks and balances might lead to unwarranted surveillance, data breaches, and the loss of privacy rights. Companies and researchers spending resources on the development of robotics must be driven by a greater purpose than just improving the bottom line. Click here for a list of top robotics companies.

Municipalities in B.C. are automating key aspects of their workflow in order to achieve planning efficiencies and accelerate approval timelines. In a market defined by limited housing supply and low affordability, cities are embracing technology and artificial intelligence to interact seamlessly with project proponents and speed up much-needed real estate development. With a federal goal of 3.9 million new homes by 2031, and with short-staffed municipalities facing ambitious provincial housing targets, the goal is to make interactions with city hall far more productive and user-friendly. This way, more projects can come to fruition before the passage of time renders them unviable or uneconomical. As the technology becomes more sophisticated, city staff can be redeployed to perform monitoring, verification and other higher-level tasks. “Say you make an application to re-zone a property today from residential to a mixed-use commercial zoning, and we figure you need to upsize your water and your sewer,” explained Ryan Smith, divisional director of planning, development and climate sustainability with City of Kelowna. “Today, we have someone look at the pipe sizes. Someone has to compile it and put it into a memo which gets sent to the developer. We’re working on automating all of that so that the system’s smart enough to go in and check pipe sizes and know what the standard would be, what the pipe size is today, and be able to figure out, ‘Okay, well you need to upsize your water line to this, you need a new sewer line and it’s got to be this,’ and give you a list of the civil-engineering-related improvements to your property.” Digital technology is playing an important role in advancing the City of Vancouver's permitting approval processes. Tools like the Permit Requirements Exploration Tool (PRET), eComply and the 3-3-3-1 dashboard are instrumental in helping the city achieve its goals outlined in the 3-3-3-1 permit approval framework. Vancouver city council adopted the 3-3-3-1 framework at a June 13, 2023 meeting. It includes three days to approve home renovation permits, three weeks for single-family home and townhouse permits, three months for certain multi-family and mid-rise projects, and one year for high-rise or large-scale projects. While the framework will take some time to accomplish, technologies like AI are helping the city get there sooner rather than later. According to a statement provided by city staff, two of the city’s tools, eComply and the 3-3-3-1 dashboard, have used AI-assisted technology. The first, eComply, was developed in partnership with Australia-based Archistar and uses AI-assisted technology to allow applicants to upload drawings and check them against regulations. Meanwhile, the 3-3-3-1 dashboard, which provides an overview of progress toward permitting targets, was supported by AI-assisted technology in its creation. While the tool is still in development and currently available for internal use only, staff said it will eventually be made public. “We remain committed to exploring emerging technologies, including AI, to continuously improve the efficiency, transparency and accessibility of our permitting processes,” said the City of Vancouver’s statement. The City of Kelowna, considered a pioneer in its use of technology, began its journey about five years ago, when a provincially funded grant enabled the city to explore ways to search zoning rules in a more efficient and user-friendly manner. The city pitched the idea to Microsoft Corp., which helped the city implement a chatbot that gives advice on zoning and building-related feedback if members of the public are trying to apply for various types of permits, such as upgrades or infill housing. “How do I apply for a swimming pool permit?” said Smith. “It will walk you through the different things you need to know and try to answer your questions about being able to do that.” Kelowna’s next phase is behind the scenes, where the city is replacing its 30-year-old legacy software with improved tools for processing building-permit and re-zoning applications. “We also needed to get better data out of that system so that we could start making better data-driven decisions related to housing, and track progress related to the Housing Supply Act in B.C., our own housing needs assessment and our housing accelerator fund commitments,” said Smith. The new software program, Cityworks, features a chatbot that guides the making of building permit applications, with everything done online. You won’t need to come into city hall for anything or to drop anything off. The software also enables digital plan checking, and building inspectors can even manage their inspections online. “The thing about AI is, the quality of the information that the municipality feeds into the system is the quality of the information that the user can get out the other side,” said Tegan Smith, CEO of Channel Consulting. “The more that the municipality has an updated official community plan, updated zoning bylaws, updated development permit area requirements and updated infrastructure plans, the more they can leverage AI and chatbots to provide specific feedback to applicants right down to the site level.” Right now, infrastructure such as roads, water and sanitary, is assessed on a site-by-site basis. For example, if a single-family lot is being turned into a six-storey apartment building, there may be a requirement to upgrade a water main to allow for adequate fire flows. Right now, all of that is done by engineering studies specific to the project. This is one reason why infrastructure master plans are critical, she said. “If we are able to develop models that can actually be predictive about the implications on a site level, then we’ve got the key with AI to unlock its full potential.” Today, AI can be used internally by city staff to enhance their workflow and easily consult building, plumbing and electrical codes. It can be used to conduct risk-based building inspections, and can be used to communicate with members of the public during major snow events. ChatGPT can quickly review zoning bylaws and answer whether or not a certain use can be implemented. Tomorrow, AI could be used to make permit approval recommendations, predict market cycles or help optimize the use of public land for affordable housing. It could also make recommendations about how best to re-develop any property based on what’s allowed by the municipality, accompanied by immediate quotes from suitable builders and financiers. In the aggregate, these novel applications could help solve regional and national housing shortages. But AI also has gaps and limitations. For example, coordinated data is needed to ensure you’re measuring apples to apples. Also, AI cannot easily be implemented for planning and development, since there are many more possible journeys with many more variables, necessitating highly complex answers to questions. “While AI can accelerate planning processes and offer fresh insights, its outputs must be combined with other data sources and assessed by professional planners and decision-makers,” said the City of Vancouver in its statement. “Relying solely on AI, or any single source of information, can pose risks when making complex, impactful decisions.” By empowering human decision-makers, redistributing their workflow and training them to interact with and oversee bleeding-edge technologies, precious staff time can be reallocated, scarce resources redistributed and personnel retrained. AI “gets me a lot of the way there because I’m able to have a certain probability of success,” said Smith of Channel Consulting. “I’m able to say it’s probably correct, and then I can go and verify. But you have to actually have the expertise to know what to ask and what to verify. I think the critical thinking and human involvement is going to continue to be important.” [email protected] @JamiMakanEconomists at two Southern California universities see new reasons to worry ahead, namely policies from the nation’s next president. They warn in new forecasts released this week that the economy may stumble in 2025 because of controversial policies promised by President-elect Donald Trump. Economist James Doti, president emeritus at Chapman University, said the economy “still appears to be strong,” even though a long period of declining inflation could reverse course under Trump. A year ago, Doti’s reading of the tea leaves showed “very slow growth” and no recession in 2024. Today, he’s sticking to a similar tale of “slow growth” that now extends through 2025. New to the mix is “some upward pressure” on inflation due to proposed tariffs and mass deportations Trump has vowed to launch after his inauguration in January. Economist Jerry Nickelsburg at UCLA agreed with Doti’s analysis. “The underlying fundamentals of the economy are strong. They have been for some time, which is why we did not say that we were going to have a recession in 2023 or 2022,” said the director of the UCLA Anderson Forecast. “Now, that doesn’t mean that geopolitical events or different policies from Washington that are not in our forecast couldn’t generate a recession. It’s just not in the data right now.” Both economists said Trump is inheriting a strong economy that will grow more slowly than previously forecast while it adjusts to new national economic policies. The clarity of post-presidential election forecasts at Chapman and UCLA are clouded by Trump’s plans to implement several economic policies promised during his 2024 campaign. Among the most controversial policies are new or increased tariffs on the nation’s largest trading partners – including Canada, China and Mexico. Policies also include mass deportations, tax cuts and deregulation. Doti believes Trump’s vow to deport of 500,000 to 1 million undocumented immigrants and 10%-25% tariffs on imported goods could push inflation closer to 3% than the Fed’s desired 2% level. How these policies manifest is not necessarily clear, considering practical, legal and political constraints on implementation, according to Nickelsburg. The UCLA professor of economics said this month’s forecast was one of the most difficult ones he’s ever written, with the exception of a recession prediction four years ago as the COVID-19 pandemic began. “When we did our March forecast in 2020, we had no idea how the pandemic was going to play out, and so there was a great deal of uncertainty then as well as now,” he said. “Economic policy in Washington is changing in a pretty fundamental way, so that increases uncertainty until we get some clarity as to what policies are going to be implemented.” Meanwhile, UCLA predicts a slowdown in interest rate cuts as the federal government grapples with those new policies. Nickelsburg sees the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates by 25 basis points at its board of governors meeting Dec. 18. He expects a pause on cuts until 2026 when the economy has absorbed the impacts of tariffs. The Fed could end up with interest rates hovering between 4% and 4.25% in 2026, he said. Doti has a different take, saying the Fed won’t cut rates in December and will instead take a wait-and-see approach. He expects the central bank will make only two, 25 basis-point cuts in 2025. “The reason we don’t think there’ll be a cut in rates next week is because we still have high inflation (2.7% for the year ended in November 2024), and it’s above the Fed’s target range of 2%, and GDP growth is at 2.8%, and job growth has still been very strong,” Doti said. “Given the Fed’s cautious approach, it’ll hold back on making further cuts.” Growth in gross domestic product, used to measure the nation’s economic health, is expected to fall to 1.4% by the end of 2025 from 2.8% in the 2024’s third quarter, he said. Both economists said the state of housing in California is showing financial strain. On the construction front, residential permits in California are forecast to rise by 12.9% in 2025, despite continuing high mortgage rates, Doti said. He argued that high mortgage rates may indirectly spur new construction. “There is a paucity of resale homes on the market because homeowners don’t want to sell and lose their sweetheart locked-in mortgages,” he said. “That has led to a sharp drop in resale home sales. The dearth of resale homes on the market is buttressing demand for new homes, often available for sale at heavily subsidized financing rates.” Nickelsburg said normalization is slowly returning to the California housing market, but potential construction cost increases due to tariffs and labor shortages could slow that process. “Builders should be responding with new development given existing homes sales are at depression levels,” said Nickelsburg. Both forecasts raised concerns about the jobs picture. Doti sees economic growth in California hampered by population losses, which he blames on the state’s regulatory and tax burdens, which have led people and businesses to leave for cheaper states like Florida and Texas. California’s job growth is forecast to rise 4.6% to 18.2 million in 2025, up from 17.4 million in 2019, but trailing U.S. job growth of 5.9% over the same period. The flight of people from the state also has lowered retail sales tax revenue, prompting some cities to raise sales tax rates in order to replenish budgets left with financial gaps. Data from Chapman showed fewer people are shopping, which translates to less tax revenue for cities. For the year-period that ended June 30, 2024, retail sales fell 4% in Orange County, 2.3% in Los Angeles County, 1.2% in the Inland Empire and 0.8% in San Diego County. For Nickelsburg, the big unknown on jobs will be the mass deportation and tariff policies of the incoming president, and their impact on a wide of industries including agriculture, construction, leisure and hospitality, retail trade and transportation and warehousing industries. Taken together, the deportations and tariffs will raise the prices for many goods and services, and potentially cause product shortages and higher labor costs as jobs go unfilled, he argued. “The uncertainty regarding the future path of unemployment is more elevated than usual because the impact of mass deportations on unemployment is not well understood due to limited empirical research on the subject,” according to Nickelsburg. An Indian actor was on Friday arrested after his appearance at a movie screening allegedly prompted a stampede by fans that crushed a woman to death, police and local media said. Huge crowds had gathered at a theatre in the southern city of Hyderabad on December 4 to catch a glimpse of actor Allu Arjun as he arrived for the screening of his film Pushpa 2: The Rule. The 42-year-old actor was arrested on suspicion of three offences, including voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to media. The officer added that seven other people had already been arrested in the case. A video on social media platform X, shared by broadcaster TV9, showed the actor holding a coffee mug as he spoke to officers who arrived at his residence to take him into custody. Later in the day, Arjun was granted interim bail for four weeks, media reports said. The victim of the stampede was a woman in her 30s attending the screening with her son, who was also seriously injured. The woman’s family later filed a complaint against Arjun, his security team and the theatre management, media outlet India Today reported. Arjun said he was “deeply heartbroken” two days after the accident. “While respecting their need for space to grieve, I stand committed to extend every possible assistance to help them navigate through this challenging journey,” he wrote on X. Global Data Deduplication Software Market Size, Share and Forecast By Key Players-IBM,Microsoft,Dell EMC,Fujitsu,HitachiPlant-based compound that prevents infectious biofilm formationThe special voting exercise on Monday, December 2, 2024, provided a preview of the high-stakes atmosphere surrounding Ghana’s general elections, set for December 7. Conducted across 14 out of 16 regions, the exercise catered to security personnel, electoral officials, media representatives, and others who will play pivotal roles during the main election. While the majority of the process unfolded peacefully, several incidents of controversy and tension highlighted the challenges that could shape the broader election environment. Among those who participated in the early voting were prominent figures such as Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. Mensa cast her vote in the La-Dadekotopon constituency, while Dr. Dampare voted at the Tema Community 2 polling station. Their involvement underscored the significance of the exercise and set a tone of calm for much of the proceedings, which largely ran smoothly across numerous constituencies. However, Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency became the center of controversy after a heated incident involving incumbent MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and her National Democratic Congress (NDC) rival, John Dumelo. Alhassan was seen distributing food to prison officers waiting in line to vote at the Legon Police Station, an act Dumelo quickly condemned as an attempt at vote-buying. The incident sparked widespread public outrage and has since been referred to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, further raising concerns about vote-buying allegations and electoral integrity in the country. This was not the only incident of controversy. In the Odododiodio constituency, NDC candidate Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie accused NPP’s Abdul Manaf Sowah of distributing money to voters, a claim Sowah denied, explaining that the funds were intended for transportation purposes. In the Cape Coast North constituency, tensions also flared when NDC candidate Dr. Kwabena Mintah Nyarko accused NPP’s Ekow Ewusi of wearing party colors to a polling station, an accusation Ewusi dismissed, stating that his attire was not meant to signify party affiliation. Further complications arose as multiple reports emerged of voters attempting to photograph their ballots, raising concerns about ballot secrecy and the potential for electoral malpractice. Notably, in Walewale, a Ghana National Fire Service officer was arrested for attempting to take a photo of their ballot. These incidents prompted the Electoral Commission to take extra precautions to ensure that such practices do not disrupt the integrity of the election process. While there were tensions, some constituencies saw more peaceful proceedings. In Ledzokuku, both NPP and NDC supporters celebrated post-voting, showing optimism despite the absence of official results. In contrast, the Bawku constituency, which has faced unrest in previous elections, experienced a relatively calm special voting exercise, providing some hope for a peaceful process in traditionally volatile areas. Due to logistical issues, special voting for the Eastern and Western regions has been rescheduled for Thursday, December 5. The Electoral Commission’s decision to recall and verify ballot papers in these regions underscores its commitment to transparency and accuracy, key factors in maintaining public trust. The December 2 special voting exercise has offered valuable lessons for the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and other stakeholders involved in the upcoming election. The incidents underscore the need for strict adherence to electoral laws, enhanced security, and rigorous monitoring to ensure that the December 7 elections are fair and credible. With tensions running high, the Electoral Commission, security forces, and political candidates have all pledged to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, reinforcing the democratic resilience of Ghana as it heads toward its crucial general elections.

Companies tighten security after a health care CEO’s killing leads to a surge of threatsThe timing could work out splendidly in regards to making a bad situation better for the Pitsburgh Steelers. Defensive tackle Montravius Adams has been practicing for two weeks as he ramps up for a return from a meniscus injury in his left knee. Meanwhile, starting defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi was on Friday ruled out for Sunday’s game at the Philadelphia Eagles because of a groin injury. “I’m good enough to play,” Adams declared after Friday’s practice at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “I put it on display these last couple weeks at practice.” An eight-year veteran who has been with the Steelers since 2021, Adams is the Steelers’ most pure nose tackle. He was their third starting defensive lineman behind Ogunjobi and Cameron Heyward before then-rookie second-round pick Keeanu Benton surpassed him on the depth chart midway through last season. But Adams remains an experienced versatile piece for a d-line that is dealing with the loss of one its top three for the first time this season. Adams has not played since Oct. 20 against the New York Jets. During the rehab, Adams said the medical staff addressed another chronic injury he’s dealt with in his knee. “I feel even better than (before the meniscus injury),” said Adams, who officially was listed as questionable to play in Philadelphia on Friday’s official status report. In addition to the looming return of Adams – for which a roster move would be necessitated to create space – veteran Dean Lowry is also likely to earn a game-day activation after he did not play last week in a win against the Cleveland Browns. Another possible option for the defensive line against the Eagles is veteran Breiden Fehoko, who is on the practice squad. “We have a lot of guys who are tremendously talented,” Adams said. “(General manager Omar Khan) and (coach Mike Tomlin) did a great job of getting us (depth).” No Pickens The Steelers made it official Friday that No. 1 receiver George Pickens will miss a second consecutive game because of a hamstring injury, Pickens did not practice at all this week after he missed the Cleveland game – the first game he missed as a pro. Pickens suffered the injury late last week in practice. Scotty Miller was activated to take his place on game day. Also Friday, reserve offensive lineman Calvin Anderson was added to the injury report. He apparently suffered a groin injury during practice. No sacks, no problem T.J. Watt has made himself a perennial NFL defensive player of the year by way of collecting sacks. But in Sunday’s high-profile game against one of the league’s best teams, chances to collect sacks could be sparse. Philadelphia has fewer pass attempts than any team in the NFL – 328, or 25.2 per game. The Eagles rely on running back Saquon Barkley and lead the league in rushing. That could mean Watt might have to make an impact more in run defense than as a passrusher. That’s OK by him. “I’m a football player at the end of the day,” Watt said. “We want to win the game. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the pass rush or run defense, any way we can get a win I am willing to do that.” Despite the relative lack of pass attempts, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts still is ripe to be sacked. The Eagles rank 30 th in the NFL in sacks allowed rate, 9.9% of their passes.Actor held after stampede death at film screening

While talking about the hosting of big-ticket events like the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and reminiscing about his work time in New Delhi, Stephan said, “Sports is building bridges and sports is about creating values in terms of economics. This is what I experienced in my work and of course, sports as well.” Stephan also laid emphasis on the investment into the grass root development of a player. He was asked about the impact of football in the far regions of the world and the rise of Spaniard Lamine Yamal who is making heads turn with his tremendous skillset at the tender age of 17. Stephan said that football has a long tradition in Europe and that the sport is “growing from bottom to top, not the other way around.” Sports is about building bridges and creating value in terms of economics. Agaba said President Tinubu’s appointment is perpetuating a culture of divisiveness. He stated this during an exclusive chat with Legit.ng on Sunday, December 29. PAY ATTENTION: Follow us on Instagram - get the most important news directly in your favourite app! “The appointment of a Yoruba man as acting Chief of Army Staff, despite protocol, raises serious questions about Tinubu's commitment to national cohesion. It's alarming that he's perpetuating a culture of divisiveness, which can have far-reaching consequences for our nation's stability.” The political analyst accused Tinubu of prioritizing tribal loyalty over national unity and the principles of federal character. “I'm deeply concerned about the recent appointments made by President Bola Tinubu. The allegations of nepotism and favoritism towards his Yoruba brothers are disturbing, to say the least. It's unacceptable that he's prioritizing tribal loyalty over national unity and the principles of federal character." This kind of nepotism can only serve to exacerbate existing tensions and create new ones.” Speaking further, he said it is disheartening to see Tinubu continuing the APC's legacy of nepotism which Nigerians witnessed during former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. “As a nation, we deserve better. We deserve leaders who prioritize national unity, equity, and justice. The APC's legacy of nepotism, as seen during Buhari's administration, is unfortunate, and it's disheartening to see Tinubu continuing this trend.” He urged Nigerians to hold leaders accountable for their actions and ensure that they work towards the betterment of the country, not just their tribe or region. Source: Legit.ngAs residents in Meadow Lake eagerly await the completion of the Co-Op Centre, there’s a renewed sense of optimism when it comes to economic prosperity for the city. “It seems like every time you turn around there is another restaurant coming,” said Trevor Dignean, administrator for the Meadow Lake and District Chamber of Commerce. “I know we’re getting a Pizza Hut here. Now we’re getting a Mary Brown’s Chicken and Burger King is coming...so we’re definitely good on the restaurant side.” While he’s happy to see any new business startups, Dignean said there’s a bigger need in Meadow Lake when it comes to hotels. “With our new facility and arena opening in May, you know that’s going to create lots and lots of traffic and bigger events, so that would be the biggest concern that we probably have here is accommodations.” Mayor Merlin Seymour agrees more beds would be a welcome addition to the community. He said there just aren’t enough hotel rooms to attract the large events they’d like to hold when the Co-Op Centre opens. The state-of-the-art facility will house an NHL-size arena, administration space, fieldhouse, and will serve as a central gathering place for a variety of recreational, cultural and community events. “Coming up in February of 2026, Meadow Lake, in conjunction with Flying Dust [First Nation], is hosting the Saskatchewan Winter Games . So, definitely a hotel would be a benefit. We do have some really great places to stay in town, but if you’re trying to attract a bunch of new people or a bunch of people to a concert or sporting event, you have to have a place for them to lay their heads down.” Several years ago, Seymour said a hotel was planned for Meadow Lake. Canalta Hotels bought property on the west side of the city where Tim Hortons, Boston Pizza and Dairy Queen were developed. “The original plan was to build a hotel, but being based out of the Drumheller area, when the oil and gas industry tanked, they pulled back the reigns on building a hotel,” Seymour said. Right now, Flying Dust First Nation is putting water and sewer infrastructure in a parcel of land north of the city. Seymour hopes the proactive work means good news on the horizon. Chief Tyson Bear told meadowlakeNOW the First Nation is following through on the ongoing vision of prior leadership to be self-sustaining and business orientated. “We’re building relationships with developers,” said Bear. “There’s potential to have a Canadian Tire possible, a Marks Work Warehouse, Sports Chek. There are so many opportunities we’re looking at including a hotel.” While he couldn’t confirm any specific developments, Bear did say there will likely be ground breaking in the spring on new business. “Being bordered up to the city of Meadow Lake, we want to be included in the economic development of the city,” Bear said. “There are a lot of First Nations in the area and without them in the community, I don’t think that there would be an economy in Meadow Lake that would thrive as well as it does.” All parties are looking forward to the potential of economic reconciliation in the future, Dignean said. In the meantime, the excitement for the opening of the new Co-op Centre is ‘unbelievable.’ “Everybody just wants it open now.” — cjnbnews@pattisonmedia.com On X: @MeadowLakeNowSimone Biles ends a year of glory with an unexpected achievement that will surprise everyone

paano mag withdraw sa ph365 Mangione appears in court day after arrest in Pennsylvania for murder of Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of fatally shooting United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a Midtown Manhattan attack last week, has signalled he will fight being extradited to New York to face murder charges. Mangione appeared in court in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, a day after he was arrested in the town of Altoona following a tip from a McDonald’s employee. He was charged with Thompson’s New York killing hours after his arrest, as well as a slate of lesser offences in Pennsylvania. Emerging from a police car, Mangione gave a partly unintelligible message to reporters, although he made reference to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people”. At the brief hearing, his defence lawyer, Thomas Dickey, told the court that Mangione would contest extradition to New York, requesting a hearing on the issue. He has 14 days to lodge a formal challenge to being relocated to New York, and in the meantime, he will be held in Pennsylvania without bail. While in court, Mangione wore an orange prison jumpsuit, alternating between staring forward, looking at papers and looking back at the gallery. He was quieted at one point by his lawyer when he attempted to speak. The court appearance came six days after a gunman fatally shot Thompson, the head of one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States, outside of a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The brazen nature of the attack – and the days-long manhunt – garnered national intrigue. Even while condemning the violence, many experts, doctors and US citizens said it was emblematic of the undercurrent of anger in the country towards the healthcare industry, where high costs leave many patients vulnerable to the will of insurers. Bullet casings found at the scene of the killing bore the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose”, appearing to reference a phrase used by critics to describe how health insurers avoid claim payouts. The gunman fled via electric bike to Central Park, and later, he boarded a bus out of the city. In the days since the attack, many have taken to social media to share accounts of insurance companies denying claims. The sentiment has led authorities to gird for copycat attacks, according to a law enforcement memo obtained by US media. The White House has also weighed in. “Obviously, this is horrific,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday. “Violence to combat any sort of corporate greed is unacceptable.” Further details emerge The law enforcement memo, which was based on Mangione’s writings, some of which were recovered at the time of his arrest, said that Mangione was likely motivated by what he described as “parasitic” health insurance companies and an overall disdain for corporate greed. Authorities have said a 3D-printed gun, a suppressor and several fake IDs, including one believed to be used by the attacker to check into a hostel in New York before the shooting, were recovered when Mangione was arrested. According to the memo, Mangione had written that the US has the most expensive healthcare system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not. The document added that Mangione may have been inspired by the so-called “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, who he called a “political revolutionary”. Kaczynski had carried out a series of bombings from the late 1970s to mid 1990s railing against modern society, technology and the destruction of the environment. His attacks killed three. The profile that has emerged since Mangione’s arrest also bears some similarities to Kaczynski, who was considered a maths prodigy. Mangione comes from an influential family in Baltimore, Maryland, and was the valedictorian at an elite Baltimore prep school. He went on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a prestigious Ivy League school. Known as affable and intelligent, some friends have said in interviews with US media that Mangione’s demeanour changed after recent surgery on his spine. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” Mangione’s family said in a statement posted on social media late Monday by his cousin, Delaware state legislator Nino Mangione. “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson, and we ask people to pray for all involved.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. Story continues below video The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Panthers: Rookie TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated for a neck injury and released . He landed awkwardly on his head after making a catch near the end of the second quarter. Chiefs: Host Las Vegas on Friday. Panthers: Host Tampa Bay next Sunday. BEIRUT — Hezbollah fired about 250 rockets and other projectiles into Israel on Sunday, wounding seven people in one of the militant group's heaviest barrages in months, in response to deadly Israeli strikes in Beirut while negotiators pressed on with cease-fire efforts to halt the all-out war. An Israeli bomb squad policeman carries the remains of a rocket that was fired from Lebanon on Sunday in Kibbutz Kfar Blum, northern Israel. Some of the rockets reached the Tel Aviv area in the heart of Israel. Meanwhile, an Israeli strike on an army center killed a Lebanese soldier and wounded 18 others in the southwest between Tyre and Naqoura, Lebanon's military said. The Israeli military expressed regret, saying that the strike occurred in an area of combat against Hezbollah and that the military's operations are directed solely against the militants. Israeli strikes have killed over 40 Lebanese troops since the start of the war between Israel and Hezbollah, even as Lebanon's military has largely kept to the sidelines. Lebanon's caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, condemned the latest strike as an assault on U.S.-led cease-fire efforts, calling it a “direct, bloody message rejecting all efforts and ongoing contacts” to end the war. Hezbollah began firing rockets, missiles and drones into Israel after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack out of the Gaza Strip ignited the war there. Hezbollah has portrayed the attacks as an act of solidarity with the Palestinians and Hamas. Iran supports both armed groups. The Israeli police bomb squad inspects the site after a missile fired from Lebanon hit the area Sunday in Petah Tikva, outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. Israel launched retaliatory airstrikes at Hezbollah, and in September the low-level conflict erupted into all-out war as Israel launched airstrikes across large parts of Lebanon and killed Hezbollah's top leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The Israeli military said about 250 projectiles were fired Sunday, with some intercepted. Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service said it treated seven people, including a 60-year old man in severe condition from rocket fire on northern Israel, a 23-year-old man who was lightly wounded by a blast in the central city of Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv, and a 70-year-old woman who suffered smoke inhalation from a car that caught fire there. In Haifa, a rocket hit a residential building that police said was in danger of collapsing. The Palestine Red Crescent reported 13 injuries it said were caused by an interceptor missile that struck several homes in Tulkarem in the West Bank. It was unclear whether injuries and damage were caused by rockets or interceptors. Sirens wailed again in central and northern Israel hours later. Israeli airstrikes without warning on Saturday pounded central Beirut, killing at least 29 people and wounding 67, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. A flock of birds flies above the smoke from Israeli airstrikes Sunday in Dahiyeh, Beirut. Smoke billowed above Beirut again Sunday with new strikes. Israel's military said it targeted command centers for Hezbollah and its intelligence unit in the southern suburbs of Dahiyeh, where the militants have a strong presence. Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,700 people in Lebanon, according to the Health Ministry. The fighting has displaced about 1.2 million people, or a quarter of Lebanon’s population. On the Israeli side, about 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have been killed by bombardment in northern Israel and in battle following Israel's ground invasion in early October. Around 60,000 Israelis have been displaced from the country's north. The EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for an "immediate ceasefire" in the Israel-Hezbollah war while on a visit to the Lebanese c... The European Union’s top diplomat called Sunday for more pressure on Israel and Hezbollah to reach a deal, saying one was "pending with a final agreement from the Israeli government.” U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein was in the region last week. Josep Borrell spoke after meeting with Mikati and Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally who has been mediating with the group. Borrell said the EU is ready to allocate $208 million to assist the Lebanese military. But Borrell later said that he did not “see the Israeli government interested clearly in reaching an agreement for a cease-fire" and that it seemed Israel was seeking new conditions. He pointed to Israel’s refusal to accept France as a member of the international committee that would oversee the cease-fire's implementation. The emerging agreement would pave the way for the withdrawal of Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops from southern Lebanon below the Litani River in accordance with the U.N. Security Council resolution that ended the monthlong 2006 war. Lebanese troops would patrol with the presence of U.N. peacekeepers. With talks for a cease-fire and hostage release deal in Gaza stalled, freed hostages and families of those held marked a year since the war's only hostage-release deal. “It’s hard to hold on to hope, certainly after so long and as another winter is about to begin," said Yifat Zailer, cousin of Shiri Bibas, who is held along with her husband and two young sons. Around 100 hostages are still in Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. Most of the rest of the 250 who were abducted in the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack were released in last year's cease-fire. Talks for another deal recently had several setbacks, including the firing of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who pushed for a deal, and Qatar’s decision to suspend its mediation. Hamas wants Israel to end the war and withdraw all troops from Gaza. Israel has offered only to pause its offensive. The Palestinian death toll from the war surpassed 44,000 this week, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count. On Sunday, six people were killed in strikes in central Gaza, according to AP journalists at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. How often do you buy something online ? A couple of times a month? A couple of times a week? A couple of times a day? Everybody's answer will be different, but collectively, it's done a lot: Online retail accounted for over $1 trillion of purchases in the U.S. in 2022 and a record $277.6 billion in the second quarter of 2023 alone. Retailers ranging from titans like Amazon and Walmart, down to local small-town shops work very hard to land their share of that business. Sadly and inevitably—so do criminals and scammers. At any given moment, they operate millions of bogus sites. So how can you spot those fake online shopping sites? Spokeo provides a guide. In the early days of the internet , it took some genuine skills to set up a website, but those days are gone. A quick search will show that there are lots of apps and services offering websites on a prefabricated "fill in the blanks" basis, and most web hosts provide those tools as part of the service when someone signs up with them. It's even easier on social media . If you were opening a "side hustle" business tomorrow from your home, you could set up your own Facebook page tonight in under an hour, with exactly zero knowledge of websites. Once that page is set up, you just need to throw a few dollars in the direction of Facebook's advertising department, and they'll start advertising your page to users. It's no harder to promote a website, except in that case, you'd give your advertising dollars to Google. This is a simplified overview, but the main point holds: Establishing a presence online has become a very democratized process, open to anyone with minimal skills and even the smallest budget for advertising. That's been a boon for legitimate entrepreneurs, but it also makes life very easy indeed for scammers. There are multiple types of bogus websites . Some are imposters, created to look very much like a legitimate commercial or government site that you're familiar with, such as Amazon or Netflix. Others don't imitate a specific site, but instead attempt to capture the look and feel of those sites in general (whether that be a retail site, a government or bank page, or even something relatively shady like a gambling or porn site). Next, scammers find ways to drive traffic to their site. Often that's through phishing texts or emails, but deceptive ads on social media or search engines like Google and Bing work just as well. Once a browser arrives at the criminals' site (or, in some cases, downloads their app), any number of bad things can happen. One is that they'll download malware onto your devices, which can capture passwords or steal personal information. A more straightforward risk is that the browser will cheerfully enter their personal and banking/credit card information, thinking they're making a legitimate purchase. That's largely why fake online shopping sites are so dangerous, and so useful to scammers and identity thieves. Most bogus sites share some or all of those characteristics, but shopping sites are a very specific type of bogus site with some quirks of their own. One characteristic to count on—whether the website directly impersonates a major retailer like Amazon, a niche retailer like MEC, or just positions itself as an anonymously general retail site—is that it will offer unusually low pricing on high-demand products. That might be a mass-market item like the latest gaming console, a suddenly in-demand item that's unavailable through normal channels (remember trying to get masks and sanitizing wipes during COVID-19?), or something as mundane as disposable diapers or high-capacity computer drives. Whatever the product, the advertised price will be low enough to get attention. The bogus site will have any number of ways to transfer a browser's money to its coffers, depending on the scammers' intentions and skillset. A few of the most common include: These are all aside from the potential to infect devices or steal payment information . Sites focused on identity theft might consider a faux purchase to be just the added gravy. How common is online shopping fraud? Well, the news is pretty bad. The FTC's 2022 Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book recorded over 327,000 online shopping complaints, the fourth-highest category for overall complaints and second among fraud categories. You would expect these sites to be more prevalent during the final quarter of the year, corresponding to the holiday gift-giving season—Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas itself—and they are, but that doesn't mean you can relax during the other nine months of the year. The Anti-Phishing Working Group, or APWG, identified nearly a million fake or phishing websites during the first quarter of 2022 alone (not a busy time of year for shopping), for example. To be clear, only 14.6% of those were eCommerce sites, but that still translates to well over 140,000 bogus shopping sites. The true number is almost certainly higher because the APWG only tracks the ones that use a phishing approach. Many opt to simply buy advertising instead (or as well), and those won't be captured in the APWG's statistics. However you slice it, there's a definite risk of encountering these sites when you shop. The good news is that bogus shopping sites aren't hard to spot, once you're aware of the risk. They aren't built for permanence; scammers pull them together quickly and cheaply and then abandon them once they stop producing. That "just good enough" approach leaves plenty of visible signs you can detect. Below, here's what to look for when recognizing fake online shopping sites. Bad images Bogus sites don't have direct access to the real products' manufacturing images, so they resort to copying and pasting from legitimate sites. \That means bogus sites' product images (and often their fake logos, if they impersonate a legitimate site) are fuzzy and low-res. A URL that's slightly "off" Imposter sites obviously can't have the same URL as the legitimate site, so they'll usually have a URL that looks right, but isn't quite. They might have a typo in the name, or incorporate the real company's name into their URL in a non-standard way ("myfakesite.amazon.com.123xyz.com"), or—sneakiest of all—use a letter from a different language's character set , which looks the same to the eye, but not to the computer. Broken links The scammers may have simply copied and pasted user interface elements from a legitimate site, in which case many links on the site may be broken (or simply not clickable). Lots of missing elements A legitimate retail website will have several pages of legalese, often starting with a pop-up about its cookie policy or privacy policy. You should certainly expect to see a detailed document spelling out shipping policies, return and refund policies, and similar details. If those are missing or brief and vapid, it's probably a fake site. Limited options for payment Sites that plan to take your money and run will often show oddly specific payment options, from wire transfers to gift cards to cryptocurrency. The thing those payment methods have in common is that it's very difficult to get money back once it's spent. Sites geared around capturing your personal or payment information, on the other hand, may insist on getting your credit card. Typos, grammar, and linguistic errors Simple, silly language errors are often a red flag. Scammers may not be native English speakers, and it shows up in awkward or sometimes inappropriate phrasing. Errors in actual product listings aren't necessarily a smoking gun—you'll see them frequently on real Amazon pages—because they come from the manufacturers, who are often not English speakers. Language errors on the rest of the site are more of a concern. HTTP vs. HTTPS In the address bar of your browser, a legitimate retail site's URL will start with HTTPS, rather than HTTP, and will show a closed lock symbol. The majority of fake sites now also have an HTTPS URL and will show the lock (so this isn't as helpful as it used to be), but less-sophisticated scammers may miss that detail. You can automatically rule those ones out. And, of course, the biggest red flag of all is an unrealistically low price on the product you're looking for. We all want to get a really good deal, but that impulse will often lead you astray. If a shopping site fails those basic "eyeball" tests, the smart thing to do is just close that browser tab and walk away. If you want to dig deeper, or if you aren't sure, there are a few quick and easy ways to verify a site's legitimacy. Use a URL/website checker Remember those really sneaky fake URLs that use a letter from another alphabet? The best way to check those (and other problematic elements in a URL) is through a URL verifier/website reputation service, like the ones from URLVoid and Google . Just copy (don't click!) the link, and paste it into the checker. If the site is sketchy, they'll tell you. Look up the site on a registry Domain names all need to be registered and there are several lookup tools to check this, like ICANN's registration lookup (think of it as Spokeo for websites). If a site claims to be Amazon but was registered just a few weeks ago, that's a really big red flag. Similarly, if the site isn't located where it should be, or if the ownership data is obscured, that's grounds for concern. Turn to Google If you have a bad feeling about a particular site, do a quick Google or Bing (or whatever) search that pairs the site's name with keywords like "scam," "fraud," "bogus" or "ripoff" and see what comes up. If you get a lot of hits, that's definitely grounds for concern. Go Forth and Shop (Safely) If a given site fails any or all of those tests, then keeping your wallet in your pocket is definitely the smart choice. Instead of making the purchase, report the site instead to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center and the FTC's Report Fraud website. That will get the investigative wheels turning and may help protect someone less wary from falling victim to the scammers. As always, wariness and skepticism are your friends when it comes to avoiding scams. Don't click on links in emails, texts , or social media messages; instead, go to the company's site by typing the URL directly. If you search a company's page on Google, scroll down through the actual search results until you find it instead of clicking on the sponsored results or advertisements at the top. Most of all, remember the golden rule of scam avoidance: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Keeping those principles in mind, and using the tips given here to screen out dubious sites means you'll be able to shop 'til you drop (safely), despite the vast number of scammers out there. And that—as the credit card ads like to say—is priceless. This story was produced by Spokeo and reviewed and distributed by Stacker. The Algoma District School Board’s annual high school VEX Robotics competition took place at Boreal French Immersion Public School Saturday. Approximately 30 students on 10 teams drawn from Korah, Superior Heights, White Pines, CASS and W.C. Eaket in Blind River participated. The robotics teams - in a game called High Stakes - were tasked with getting their robots to pick rubber rings off the surface of the school’s gym, travel across the floor for a short distance and lift the rings onto posts. Judges from the community’s engineering and business fields scored the performance of each team’s robot and referees were present. “A lot of these students have been involved with the robotics program since elementary school or in high school for a couple of years and it’s a real growth program for them. They’ve really stepped up their game in terms of understanding how to build and design robots to compete in these challenges,” said Mark Carlucci, Algoma District School Board robotics coordinator. Robotics programs in elementary and secondary schools emphasize the importance of developing skills in science, technology, engineering, and math - otherwise known as STEM - in preparation for the modern work world. “There are some great opportunities for them in computer science, mechanical engineering, robotics engineering, electrical engineering and mechatronics. We’ve seen a few of our graduates move that way. Some of the kids are shy but here they interact with their team members and other teams,” Carlucci told SooToday . There’s relatively little 'chalk and talk' learning involved in robotics. “A lot of it is just diving right in. We have the students working on builds and understanding the process of robotics,” Carlucci said. Students have been preparing for the annual high school VEX Robotics competition since the beginning of the current school year, bonding as team members and building their robots as an extracurricular activity. A Korah Collegiate team - composed of Gr. 12 students Samantha Cho, Lars Fransen-Molino, Yaksha Contractor and Aili Luonaranta - competed against other teams Saturday with their robotic creation called ‘The Toaster Oven.’ “We started building it in the middle of September and robotics is every day after school from about 2:30 to 4. We’ve been working on it for all these weeks. This is our second year. It was a lot easier to build this year. My favourite thing about robotics is my team, honestly. I think we’re doing pretty good so far today. I think this is a really good experience,” Cho said. High school robotics is seen not only as training for an in-demand field but also as an alternative team building exercise for students who aren’t into sports. “Robotics is a great program. We’ve made a lot of improvements over last year. Last year was an experimental year. Right now we’ve won six events and lost one today. I want to do chemical or mining engineering so this will definitely carry over into my career. We enjoy it,” said Fransen-Molino. Winning teams from Saturday's competition will head to regional competition in Sudbury in January and then provincials in southern Ontario. The ADSB's elementary school robotics competition will be held in January. Saturday’s event also saw Neil McLean, Sault North Rotary past president present a cheque for $5,000 to ADSB’s robotics program. The amount was the second installment of a $15,000 commitment for ADSB robotics made by Sault North Rotary earlier this year.

Losing weight and having a lean physique is a desire for many, nevertheless, for most, it stays just that — a dream. Have you ever wondered why? Why do some people seem to lose weight effortlessly, while others fight their entire lives? Why don't healthy nutrition and everyday exercise always produce the expected results? If you've heard that it's due to metabolism or a slow metabolic rate, you're half correct. But have you considered why your body's metabolism is sluggish in the first place? Diabetes, thyroid problems, a sedentary lifestyle, stress and other hormonal disorders are common causes of slow metabolism. Mitolyn distinguishes itself with a distinctive blend of six exotic nutrients and botanicals carefully selected to help promote healthy mitochondrial activity. This one-of-a-kind mixture is based on scientific study, so each ingredient works together to help boost your metabolism and energy levels. Get started with Mitolyn today! Importance Of Healthy Mitochondria Levels Mitochondria, sometimes known as the "powerhouses of the cell," play an important part in maintaining a healthy weight. When their function is disrupted, a series of issues arise, making weight management difficult. One of the most serious concerns associated with damaged mitochondria is the body's inability to burn fat efficiently. Mitochondria turn stored calories and fat into energy. When these tiny structures are damaged, fat oxidation decreases, resulting in persistent weight gain that nutrition and physical activity alone cannot reverse. Low mitochondrial levels also result in lower energy generation, which has a direct impact on physical activity. Individuals with poor mitochondrial health frequently feel fatigued, making it harder to maintain a vigorous routine or engage in regular workouts. This lack of mobility exacerbates weight growth, resulting in an endless cycle. Furthermore, damaged mitochondria cause hormonal abnormalities since they regulate metabolic hormones. Disruptions in these hormones can cause increased hunger, poor satiety, and a tendency to retain fat rather than burn it. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are two additional problems linked with mitochondrial dysfunction. These factors not only impede metabolism but also encourage the storage of visceral fat, raising the risk of obesity-related illnesses. Without addressing these underlying causes, maintaining a healthy body weight is extremely impossible. How Does Mitolyn Work? Mitolyn is a science-backed, novel approach to weight loss that targets a primary reason that most fat management treatments overlook: low mitochondrial levels. These little powerhouses within your cells play an important part in your body's capacity to burn fat, generate energy, and maintain overall health. But how does Mitolyn do this? Mitolyn's success is based on its capacity to support and possibly increase the activity of mitochondria. Mitochondria transform the food you ingest into energy, known as ATP. This energy powers everything, from muscular contraction to brain activity. Low mitochondrial levels reduce energy generation, delay fat burning and cause undesirable weight gain. Mitolyn works to rejuvenate these cellular powerhouses, potentially helping your body burn fat more efficiently and produce the energy it requires to survive. Mitolyn is a holistic health supplement that does more than just help you lose weight. It can help promote cholesterol balance and may improve circulation, both of which benefit heart health. The mixture can also improve immune function, allowing your body to fight off infections more efficiently. It may help improve skin, liver and digestive health, possibly resulting in a more vibrant and energetic lifestyle. Chronic stress is a silent impediment to successful weight management. Mitolyn contains substances that may help control stress hormones, boost mood and promote mental clarity. Mitolyn can help promote the smoothest possible weight loss path by addressing both physical and mental well-being. Researchers discovered that decreased mitochondrial levels are a common cause in obese people. Mitolyn builds on this discovery by addressing the cellular basis of energy and fat metabolism. It's a comprehensive program designed to help you accomplish not only weight loss but also total energy and wellness. Astaxanthin protects mitochondria from oxidative damage , resulting in maximum energy generation and fat-burning capacity. This component also improves cardiovascular health by supporting healthy blood flow, which is required for nutrient delivery and waste disposal at the cellular level. Haematococcus decreases inflammation, which is a major contributor to metabolic slowing and weight gain. Its unique capacity to increase cellular energy makes it an essential component of Mitolyn, helping to promote efficient fat metabolism and general health. Theobroma cacao, sometimes known as the "food of the gods," is an organic source of flavonoids and magnesium, each of which improves mitochondrial function. It stimulates energy generation by boosting blood flow to cells, ensuring that mitochondria receive vital nutrients. Theobroma Cacao also offers mood-enhancing qualities , lowering stress and preventing emotional eating. Its ability to regulate blood sugar levels reduces insulin surges that cause fat storage. Theobroma Cacao enhances Mitolyn's weight management strategy by promoting metabolic health as well as emotional well-being. The United States is home to nearly one third of them, the largest concentration of any country. New York City alone has 144 billionaire inhabitants — more than any country besides the US, , and Germany. Most — 87% — of billionaires are male, and have amassed their fortunes in different ways than the world's 431 female billionaires. While the majority of all billionaires, about 60%, are fully self-made, men are more likely to be than . In fact, 76% of the world's female billionaires have inherited at least part of their wealth, compared to 35% of male ones. Male billionaires are more likely to have public assets make up the largest share, or about 40%, of their wealth. Male tech billionaires whose fortunes are tied up in the companies they control or founded — like Elon Musk and — skewed that number, according to the report. Meanwhile, liquid assets, like cash and private holdings, are the largest asset classes for women. Both are more typically tied to , Altrata found. The largest share of all billionaires, about 22%, work in finance or banking, but the largest portion, about 17%, of female billionaires spend most of their professional time in the nonprofit sector. The interests of male and female billionaires follow suit: 71% of women billionaires count philanthropy as a top interest, while sports was the most popular one for male billionaires. Among all billionaires, the top philanthropic cause was education, which includes gifts to alma maters — an especially popular form of giving in the US. Billionaires are also more likely to splurge on different high-value items depending on their gender. Men prefer luxury vehicles — jets, yachts, cars — while women prefer property and art. In fact, male billionaires are almost four times as likely to own a worth more than $1 million than their female counterparts. So, if you are looking for a man or woman, finance isn't a bad place to start. Failing that, why not try a gala or classic car show? We'll leave the choice of eye color up to you. QuickFee and Mango Partner on Payment Plans for Accounting FirmsOusted Syrian leader Assad flees to Moscow after fall of Damascus, Russian state media say DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Russia media say ousted Syrian leader Bashar Assad has fled to Moscow and received asylum from his longtime ally. The reports came hours after a stunning rebel advance swept into Damascus to cheers and ended the Assad family’s 50 years of iron rule. Thousands of Syrians poured into streets echoing with celebratory gunfire, joyful after a stifling, nearly 14-year civil war. But the swiftly moving events raised questions about the future of the country and the wider region. The rebels face the daunting task of healing bitter divisions in a country still split among armed factions. One rebel commander said “we will not deal with people the way the Assad family did." The fall of Bashar Assad after 13 years of war in Syria brings to an end a decades-long dynasty BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian President Bashar Assad has fled the country. Assad’s departure on Sunday brings to a dramatic close his nearly 14-year struggle to hold onto power in a brutal civil war that became a proxy battlefield for regional and international powers. Assad’s exit stood in stark contrast to his first months as Syria’s unlikely president in 2000, when many hoped he would be a young reformer after three decades of his father’s iron grip. But faced with protests of his rule that erupted in March 2011, Assad turned to his father's brutal tactics to crush dissent. A long stalemate was quickly broken when opposition groups in northwest Syria launched a surprise offensive late last month. Who is Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the insurgency that toppled Syria's Assad? BEIRUT (AP) — Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the militant leader who led the stunning insurgency that toppled Syria’s President Bashar Assad, has spent years working to remake his public image and that of his fighters. He renounced longtime ties to al-Qaida and depicts himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance. The extent of that transformation from jihadi extremist to would-be state builder is now put to the test. The 42-year-old al-Golani is labeled a terrorist by the United States. He has not appeared publicly since Damascus fell early Sunday. But he and his insurgent force, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, stand to be a major player in whatever comes next. Trump says he can't guarantee tariffs won't raise US prices and won't rule out revenge prosecutions WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump says he can’t guarantee his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won’t raise prices for American consumers. And he's suggesting once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect made the comments in a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday. He also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere. Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning “things do change.” The hunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO's elusive killer yields new evidence, but few answers NEW YORK (AP) — Police don’t know who he is, where he is, or why he did it. As the frustrating search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer got underway for a fifth day Sunday, investigators reckoned with a tantalizing contradiction: They have troves of evidence, but the shooter remains an enigma. One conclusion they are confident of, however: It was a targeted attack, not a random one. On Sunday morning, police declined to comment on the contents of a backpack found in Central Park that they believe was carried by the killer. Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday outside of a hotel in Manhattan. Trump calls for immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and says a US withdrawal from NATO is possible WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is pushing Russian leader Vladimir Putin to act to reach an immediate ceasefire with Ukraine. Trump describes it as part of his active efforts as president-elect to end the war despite being weeks from taking office. Trump also said he would be open to reducing military aid to Ukraine and pulling the United States out of NATO. Those are two threats that have alarmed Ukraine, NATO allies and many in the U.S. national security community. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says any deal would have to pave the way to a lasting peace. The Kremlin's spokesman says Moscow is open to talks with Ukraine. South Korean prosecutors detain ex-defense chief over martial law imposition SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean prosecutors have detained a former defense minister who allegedly recommended last week’s brief but stunning martial law imposition to President Yoon Suk Yeol. Local media say that ex-Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun voluntarily appeared on Sunday at a Seoul prosecutors’ office, where he had his mobile phone confiscated and was detained. A law enforcement official says Kim was later sent to a Seoul detention facility. Kim's detention came a day after Yoon avoided an opposition-led bid to impeach him, with most ruling party lawmakers boycotting a floor vote to prevent a two-thirds majority needed to suspend his presidential powers. Gaza health officials say latest Israeli airstrikes kill at least 14 including children DEIR AL BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian health officials say Israeli airstrikes in central Gaza have killed at least 14 people including children, while the bombing of a hospital in northern Gaza has wounded a half-dozen patients. Israel’s military continues its latest offensive against Hamas militants in northern Gaza, whose remaining Palestinians have been almost completely cut off from the rest of the territory amid a growing humanitarian crisis. One airstrike flattened a residential building in the urban Bureij refugee camp Sunday afternoon. That's according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah, where the casualties were taken. Trump's return may be a boon for Netanyahu, but challenges abound in a changed Middle East TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is jubilant about President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House. Trump's first term policies skewed heavily in favor of Israel, and he has picked stalwart Israel supporters for key positions in his administration. But much has transpired since Trump left office in early 2021. The turmoil in the Middle East, the lofty ambitions of Netanyahu’s far-right governing coalition and Netanyahu’s own personal relationship with the president-elect could dampen that enthusiasm and complicate what on the surface looks like a seamless alliance. First 12-team College Football Playoff set, Oregon seeded No. 1 and SMU edges Alabama for last spot SMU captured the last open spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, bumping Alabama to land in a bracket that placed undefeated Oregon at No. 1. The selection committee preferred the Mustangs (11-2), losers of a heartbreaker in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, who had a far less difficult schedule than Alabama (9-3) of the SEC but one fewer loss. The first-of-its-kind 12-team bracket marks a new era for college football, though the Alabama-SMU debate made clear there is no perfect formula. The tournament starts Dec. 20-21 with four first-round games. It concludes Jan. 20 with the national title game in Atlanta.

Stay warm and dry all winter long with these cold-weather running tipsScheifele notches hat trick as Jets top Maple Leafs 5-2Pimax just announced a new PC VR headset that weighs less than 200 grams and boasts 4K per eye microOLED panels and pancake lenses. That means the Pimax Dream Air matches the display specifications of Apple’s Vision Pro , yet weighs less than an iPhone 16 Pro. The Dream Air looks quite similar to the Vision Pro, and Pimax undoubtedly drew inspiration from Apple’s design. The renders show a compact, curved headset with a single rear head strap that splits at the back to cup the head. Pimax says the strap automatically adjusts to a perfect fit. There’s also automatic lens spacing to align with your eyes. That’s important since the Pimax Dream Air supports eye-tracking. That means the Dream Air will be suitable for sharing, something that’s usually difficult with a Vision Pro since it requires a face scan before purchase to get the right size. Pimax is known for making high-end PC VR headsets that push the limits of what’s possible, but with the trade-off of a bulky and heavy head-mounted display that requires a VR-ready PC to use. The Dream Air is a new type of Pimax device that could change our expectations. Like the Pimax Crystal and $800 Crystal Light , the Dream Air will offer the best performance when connected to a Windows PC with a powerful graphics card. It connects via an included 5-meter USB-C cable, so you’ll need a computer that supports DisplayPort over USB. Its 3840 × 3552 pixel-per-eye resolution at 90Hz will challenge older GPUs. However, Pimax has implemented foveated rendering and upscaling to reduce performance demands somewhat. We don’t have recommended system specifications yet, but a fast gaming PC will be a necessity . The Pimax Dream Air features inside-out tracking, so base stations aren’t needed. Pimax also has new controllers that lack rings and look very similar to Touch Plus controllers included with Meta’s low-cost Quest 3 and 3S . The Dream Air also supports hand-tracking so it can be used without controllers, depending on the game. Pimax also announced an optional Cobb compute puck powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2. We don’t know if this will be the original XR2 chip or the newer Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 that’s used in the Quest 3 and 3S . When plugged into the Dream Air, you’ll be able to access some features without connecting to your PC. Pimax notes this could be useful when traveling, so I’d expect it to support video playback and possibly casual gaming or browsing. Pricing and full specifications of Cobb haven’t been revealed yet. Overall, it looks and sounds like a very intriguing PC VR gaming headset that packs lots of impressive features into a small and remarkably light device. The potential for mobile use with Cobb adds more value. It could turn out to be one of the best VR headsets available . Pimax says the Dream Air will start shipping in May 2025. That’s just five months away, so Pimax has to move quickly to meet that self-imposed deadline. Note that the company has a history of delays in shipping new products, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dream Air arrives later in the year. The Pimax Dream Air is now available for preorder via Pimax’s website. The price is surprisingly low for such an advanced design: $1,895 ($1,199 to preorder plus $697 when it ships). There’s a 14-day trial after you receive the headset, so you can return the Dream Air for a full refund if you aren’t satisfied.

Deion Sanders sends clear message to Travis Hunter in speech in front of Colorado Buffaloes teammatesPlenty of big-time investors have made a name for themselves over the years, but arguably none have become as big of a household name as Warren Buffett. Thanks to personal achievements and the success of his company, Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.A 0.30% ) ( BRK.B 0.18% ) , Buffett has even become known as the "Oracle of Omaha." With a track record of decades of market-beating returns, it's no surprise that investors of all experience levels (myself included) turn to Buffett's words and Berkshire Hathaway's holdings for guidance on how to approach the market. Below are Berkshire Hathaway's top five holdings, according to CNBC: Company Percentage of Portfolio Apple ( AAPL 1.30% ) 23.2% American Express ( AXP 1.30% ) 15.4% Bank of America ( BAC 1.06% ) 12.1% Coca-Cola ( KO 0.72% ) 8.6% Chevron ( CVX -1.23% ) 6.4% Data source: Berkshire Hathaway's 13F filing. Holdings as of Sept. 30 and Oct. 15. Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway have made major changes recently Buffett is known for his long-term investing approach . One of my favorite Buffett quotes speaks to this mentality, "If you aren't willing to own a stock for 10 years, don't even think about owning it for 10 minutes." It sounds simple enough in theory, but it's easy to get lured in by short-term happenings in the stock market. That said, recent moves by Berkshire Hathaway remind investors they can invest in a company for the long term while still adjusting their stake when it makes sense to do so. For example, since the end of 2023, Berkshire Hathaway has sold around 605 million shares of Apple -- or close to 70% of its stake. Did Buffett and his team do this because they have lost faith in Apple's long-term potential? Not at all. Buffett cited high valuations while anticipating a rise in capital gains taxes as reasons for shrinking the Apple position. For Berkshire Hathaway, that makes sense. Of course, your situation and that of a trillion-dollar corporation are very, very different, but it highlights how investors can keep a long-term mindset while still making adjustments to their portfolio along the way.Google announces quantum computing chip breakthrough‘Immense loss for nation’: Top BJP leaders pay tributes to Manmohan Singh

The Deputy Commissioner’s office in South Kashmir’s Pulwama has initiated the transfer of 4,834 kanals and 19 marlas of state land for the establishment of a new campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar in Hazratbal. In an official communication, the district administration announced the formation of a team to expedite the preparation of necessary revenue documents. The team comprises officers and officials from various tehsils, including Naib Tehsildars from Newa and Kakapora, as well as revenue staff such as Girdawars and Patwaris from Trich, Parigam, Patalbagh, Kangan, and Newa. These officials have been directed to report to the office of the Assistant Commissioner (Revenue), Pulwama, to begin their work. The Deputy Commissioner’s office has also circulated the directive to the Tehsildars of Pulwama, Pampore, Kakapora, and Rajpora for their information and further action. Seizing 5000 Kanals Unacceptable: PDP Peoples Democratic Party leaders on Thursday opposed the government move to transfer nearly 5000 kanal of land for setting up the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. PDP leaders Waheed Para and Iltija Mufti termed acquiring thousands of kanals of land for the institution as “unacceptable.” MLA Pulwama Waheed-ur-Rehman Para took to X and wrote :“Pulwama welcomes the establishment of an NIT, but seizing 5000 kanals of land is unacceptable. Without fair compensation and guaranteed jobs for locals, this project will face strong resistance.” Party chief Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter, Iltija Mufti, voiced strong objections to the acquisition of 5000 kanals of land for the establishment of a new NIT campus in Pulwama. In a post on X, she wrote, “Grabbing land in Kashmir under the ruse of ‘development’ in J&K continues unabated. Pray tell what’s the need to seize 5000 kanals of prime agricultural land in Pulwama to establish a NIT? If education was such a priority why have a lopsided reservation in the first place?”DKosig Mega-cap technology stocks have led this raging bull market for much of the past year or so. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Will Howard passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another, TreVeyon Henderson ran for a score and No. 2 Ohio State beat previously undefeated No. 5 Indiana 38-15 on Saturday. All Ohio State (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten, CFP No. 2) has to do now is beat Michigan at home next Saturday and it will earn a return to the Big Ten championship game for the first time since 2020 and get a rematch with No. 1 Oregon. The Ducks beat Ohio State 32-31 in a wild one back on Oct. 12. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1, No. 5 CFP) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defence that sacked Canadian quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. “In life, all good things come to an end,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. Late in the first half, Indiana punter James Evans fumbled a snap and was buried at his own 7-yardline with the Buckeyes taking over. That turned quickly into a 4-yard TD run by Henderson that gave the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead. Early in the second half, Caleb Downs fielded an Evans punt at the Ohio State 21, raced down the right sideline, cut to the middle and outran the coverage for a TD that put the Buckeyes up 21-7. It was the first time a Buckeye returned a punt for a touchdown since 2014. Howard finished 22 for 26 for 201 yards. Emeka Egbuka had seven catches for 80 yards and a TD. “Our guys just played with a chip today, and that’s the way you got to play the game of football,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. Indiana scored on its first possession of the game and its last, both short runs by Ty Son Lawson, who paced the Hoosiers with 79 rushing yards. Rourke, a 24-year-old from Oakville, Ont., is the brother of BC Lions QB Nathan Rourke. He was 8 for 18 for 68 yards. “We had communication errors, pass (protection), every time we dropped back to pass, something bad happened," Cignetti said. Indiana's 151 total yards was its lowest of the season. And it was the most points surrendered by the Hoosier's defence. The takeaway Indiana: Its special season was blemished by the Buckeyes, who beat the Hoosiers for the 30th straight time. Indiana was eyeing its first conference crown since sharing one with two other teams in 1967. That won't happen now. “Ohio State deserved to win,” Cignetti said. “They had those (third quarter scores), and we just couldn’t respond.” Ohio State: Didn't waste the opportunities presented by the Hoosiers when they got sloppy. The Buckeyes led 14-7 at the break and took control in the second half. An offensive line patched together because of multiple injuries performed surprisingly well. “We know what was at stake," Day said. “We don't win this game, and we have no chance to go to Indianapolis and play in the Big Ten championship. And that's real. We've had that approach for the last few weeks now, more than that.” Poll implications Some voters were obviously unsure of Indiana because it hadn't played a nationally ranked team before Ohio State. After this one, the Hoosiers will drop. All about Will Howard made history by completing 80% of his passes for the sixth time this season. No other Ohio State quarterback has done that. He completed his first 14 passes in a row and finished with a 85% completion rate. “I think Buckeye nation is now seeing, after 11 games, that this guy is a winner, he's tough, he cares about his teammates, he's a leader,” Day said. Microsoft EVP Takeshi Numoto sells $414,720 in stockLONDON (AP) — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor “brutally raped and battered” her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger. The fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime, shook his head as the jury of eight women and four men returned the verdict after deliberating for about six hours in the High Court in Dublin. He was mobbed by cameras as he left court but did not comment. He later said on the social platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the “modest award.” Hand's voice cracked and her hands trembled as she read a statement outside the courthouse, saying she would never forget what happened to her but would now be able to move on with her life. She thanked her family, partner, friends, jurors, the judge and all the supporters that had reached out to her online, but particularly her daughter. “She has given me so much strength and courage over the last six years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice,” she said. “I want to show (her) and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. Under Irish law, she did not have the anonymity she would have been granted in a criminal proceeding and was named publicly throughout the trial. Her lawyer told jurors that McGregor was angry about a fight he had lost in Las Vegas two months earlier and took it out on his client. “He’s not a man, he’s a coward,” attorney John Gordon said in his closing speech. “A devious coward and you should treat him for what he is.” Gordon said his client never pretended to be a saint and was only looking to have fun when she sent McGregor a message through Instagram after attending a Christmas party. He said Hand knew McGregor socially and that they had grown up in the same area. She said he picked her and a friend up in a car and shared cocaine with them, which McGregor admitted in court, on the way to the Beacon Hotel. Hand said she told McGregor she didn't want to have sex with him and that she was menstruating. She said she told him “no” as he started kissing her but he eventually pinned her to a bed and she couldn't move. McGregor put her in a chokehold and later told her, “now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times,” referring to a UFC match when he had to admit defeat, she said. Hand had to take several breaks in emotional testimony over three days. She said McGregor threatened to kill her during the encounter and she feared she would never see her young daughter again. Eventually, he let go of her. “I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn’t tell anyone so he wouldn’t hurt me again,” she testified. She said she then let him do what he wanted and he had sex with her. A paramedic who examined Hand the next day testified that she had never before seen someone with that intensity of bruising. A doctor told jurors Hand had multiple injuries. Hand said the trauma of the attack had left her unable to work as a hairdresser, she fell behind on her mortgage and had to move out of her house. Police investigated the woman’s complaint but prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. McGregor, in his post on X, said he was disappointed jurors didn't see all the evidence prosecutors had reviewed. He testified that the two had athletic and vigorous sex, but that it was not rough. He said “she never said ‘no’ or stopped” and testified that everything she said was a lie. “It is a full blown lie among many lies,” he said when asked about the chokehold allegation. “How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings.” McGregor’s lawyer told jurors they had to set aside their animus toward the fighter. “You may have an active dislike of him, some of you may even loathe him – there is no point pretending that the situation might be otherwise,” attorney Remy Farrell said. “I’m not asking you to invite him to Sunday brunch.” The defense said the woman never told investigators McGregor threatened her life. They also showed surveillance video in court that they said appeared to show the woman kiss McGregor’s arm and hug him after they left the hotel room. Farrell said she looked “happy, happy, happy.” McGregor said he was “beyond petrified” when first questioned by police and read them a prepared statement. On the advice of his lawyer, he refused to answer more than 100 follow-up questions. The jury ruled against Hand in a case she brought against one of McGregor’s friends, James Lawrence, whom she accused of having sex with her in the hotel without consent.

US and foreign leaders praise Jimmy Carter's legacyThe 23-year-old, valued at €50 million, has drawn interest from multiple clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, but Villa appears determined to take the lead under the direction of sporting director Monchi. Manager Unai Emery’s previous connection with Baena from their shared time at Villarreal is expected to play a crucial role in the pursuit. The Spanish international thrived under Emery’s guidance, and this familiarity could be a significant factor in convincing him to make the move to Villa Park. King says Alex Baena wouldn’t mind playing for Unai Emery Former club scout Bryan King has suggested that Baena would likely welcome a reunion with Emery, whose management style and communication align well with the winger’s playing approach. Although the mid-season transfer window often poses challenges for acquiring top-tier talent, Aston Villa is reportedly considering an advanced agreement in December to streamline the process. This proactive strategy underscores the club’s intent to strengthen their attacking options as they aim to sustain momentum in their Premier League campaign. Speaking to , King said: “Baena is a Spanish player, playing for the national team.” “Emery is a Spanish manager, communication would be easy, and I’m sure Baena wouldn’t mind playing for Emery. Villa might perhaps look to bring Baena in quicker than initially thought. They could look to make a move in January. Maybe a deal could be agreed in advance and the move complete in January.” “However, it is always tough to get a deal agreed in the middle of the season, and certainly for a player of that quality.” Baena, who is under contract with Villarreal until 2028, has consistently proven himself as one of La Liga’s most exciting players. He concluded the 2023–24 season as the league’s leading assist provider, racking up 14 assists. Maintaining his strong form, he has already contributed one goal and five assists in 11 matches this season, further highlighting his value as a creative force on the field. While , Aston Villa’s concerted efforts to reunite him with Emery could tip the scales in their favour. A player of Baena’s calibre would undoubtedly elevate Villa’s attacking depth and creativity, aligning with the club’s growing ambition.Arizona (7-8) at Los Angeles Rams (9-6) Saturday, 8:15 p.m. EST, NFL Network BetMGM : Rams by 6 1/2. Against the spread: Cardinals 9-6; Rams 8-7. Series record: Rams lead 50-41-2. Last meeting: Cardinals beat Rams 41-10 in Glendale, Ariz. on Sept. 15. Last week: Cardinals lost to Carolina 36-30, OT; Rams beat New York Jets 19-9. Cardinals offense: overall (11), rush (5), pass (20), scoring (14). Turnover differential: Cardinals minus-4; Rams plus-5. Cardinals player to watch WR Marvin Harrison Jr. has had a relatively productive rookie season with 51 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. But it’s also true that he hasn’t always looked like the true franchise changing force the Cardinals expected when they took him with the No. 4 overall pick. Arizona might be out of the playoff race, but Harrison’s development continues to be a major focus for the team down the stretch. Rams player to watch RB Kyren Williams is coming off his best game of the season after rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to help Los Angeles grind out a win at the Meadowlands. He hardly factored into the first meeting against Arizona, a game the Rams trailed 14-0 halfway into the first quarter and 24-3 at halftime, getting 12 carries and running for 25 yards and a touchdown behind a battered offensive line. Key matchup Cardinals QB Kyler Murray vs. Rams defensive line. Los Angeles had no answers for Murray in September as he threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and added 59 yards rushing. But their defensive front is much more cohesive than it was in the second week of the season, with rookies Jared Verse and Braden Fiske proving to be menaces in the backfield. If Murray feels that pressure and can’t keep his eyes downfield, the Rams will be in much better shape to limit Arizona’s passing game. Key injuries The Cardinals have been beat up over the past two games. Both of the starting tackles — Paris Johnson Jr. (knee) and Jonah Williams (knee) — are out for the season after they were put on injured reserve this week. Others such as RB James Conner (knee), LB Baron Browning (neck), LB Mack Wilson Sr. (concussion) and DL Darius Robinson (calf) have been limited during practice. ... The Rams are in good shape, a far cry from where they were to start the season. RT Rob Havenstein was the only name on their injury report through Wednesday, when he was limited because of a shoulder injury. Series notes Arizona has not swept the season series since 2014 when the Rams were playing in St. Louis. ... The Rams and Cardinals have split the past four meetings. Arizona had dropped 11 of the previous 12 in the series. ... Los Angeles is 3-2 against Arizona since moving into SoFi Stadium in 2020, kickstarting its run to the Super Bowl after the 2021 season with a 34-11 win in an NFC wild-card game. Stats and stuff The Cardinals have lost four of their past five games and were eliminated from the playoff race after last week’s 36-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The Cardinals have made the playoffs just once over the past nine seasons. That was in 2021 ... Harrison had four catches for 130 yards and two TDs vs. the Rams in Week 2. All of that production came in the span of seven plays in the first quarter. ... The Cardinals are No. 5 in the NFL with 145.8 yards rushing per game. They also rank No. 2 with 5.28 yards per carry. ... Chad Ryland has made 25 field goals since his debut in Week 5, which ranks fourth in the NFL over that span. ... Safety Budda Baker has a career-high 148 tackles this season, which broke his previous high of 147 set in 2019. ... James Conner has 1,500 yards from scrimmage this season, including 1,090 rushing and 410 receiving. ... Trey McBride has caught 91 passes this season, which is a franchise record at tight end for the Cardinals. ... The Rams can clinch a playoff spot with a win and either a Seahawks loss or tie or a series of results elsewhere to secure the strength of victory tiebreaker. ... Rams QB Matthew Stafford threw for 110 yards against the Jets. Los Angeles has won all four games this season where Stafford has finished with fewer than 200 yards through the air. ... WR Puka Nacua had a record-setting rookie season, but Arizona was the one team that kept him in check. Nacua made four catches in each of the two meetings in 2023, finishing with 26 and 27 yards. ... The Rams didn’t have LT Alaric Jackson (suspension), LG Steve Avila (knee) or Nacua (knee) in the Week 2 game against the Cardinals. ... Los Angeles has run for at least 132 yards in four straight games, with Williams accounting for at least 87 yards in each outing that span. Fantasy tip Cooper Kupp likely sank many a fantasy title push with his limited production over the past month, and the Rams WR should remain on benches this week for any owners still in the mix. Kupp has topped 44 yards receiving once in his past five games against Arizona. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Attorneys for Meta shareholders asked a Delaware judge Monday to sanction the company's former Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and fellow Facebook board member and current White House chief of staff Jeff Zients for deleting emails related to the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal , despite being told to preserve such records. The plaintiff attorneys contend that Sandberg and Zients used personal email accounts to communicate about key issues relating to their 2018 shareholder lawsuit that alleged Facebook officers and directors violated both the law and their fiduciary duties in failing for years to protect the privacy of user data. “Although Sandberg and Zients received a litigation hold requiring them to preserve documents from these accounts, they both knowingly and permanently destroyed electronically stored information from such sources,” attorneys said in a court filing. The plaintiffs say the former board members were either “reckless or intentional” in destroying documents, noting that Sandberg deleted communications to and from her Gmail account after only 30 days, even after being notified of the “litigation hold” to preserve documents. Zients never disabled an auto-delete function on his email account, even though he, too, received a litigation hold and consulted with lawyers, they said. The plaintiffs argue that Sandberg and Zients should be prohibited from testifying about information they sent or received using their personal email accounts. They also say the burden of proof for any affirmative defense they present should be raised to a standard of “clear and convincing evidence,” instead of the lower standard of a “preponderance” of the evidence. Sandberg was deposed last week. Plaintiff attorney Max Huffman said Zients is “busy” and will be deposed in February “after there’s an effective transition in Washington.” Defense attorney Berton Ashman described the email deletions as “unfortunate” but argued that the plaintiffs have not shown that they were prejudiced in any way. “There’s no intent here to destroy relevant or responsive information,” Ashman told Vice Chancellor J. Travis Laster, adding that there no “trove of missing emails.” “There’s no grand scheme or suggestion of bad behavior,” he added. Ashman said the vast majority of emails that Sandberg and Zients sent or received using their personal accounts were also received by other individuals at Facebook. He suggested that any emails that may have been deleted have been made available to the plaintiffs from other sources at Facebook. Huffman, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, said Sandberg does not deserve the benefit of the doubt. “She unilaterally controlled what was kept and what was destroyed,” he told the judge. Laster, who is scheduled to preside over a non-jury trial in April, said he wanted to see a transcript of Sandberg’s deposition before ruling on the motion for sanctions. Last year, the judge rejected a defense motion arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the plaintiffs did not first demand that Facebook’s board take legal action before filing litigation themselves. He agreed with the plaintiffs that such a demand would have been futile because of doubts that a majority of the relevant Facebook board members, many with close personal and business ties to Mark Zuckerberg, would be willing to confront the CEO and founder of the company over its privacy failures. Laster noted that, in deciding on a motion to dismiss, he was required to accept the allegations in the complaint as true. The complaint alleges that Facebook officials repeatedly and continually violated a 2012 consent order with the Federal Trade Commission under which Facebook agreed to stop collecting and sharing personal data on platform users and friends without their consent. Facebook later sold user data to commercial partners in direct violation of the consent order and removed disclosures from privacy settings that were required under consent order, the lawsuit alleges. The company’s conduct resulted in significant fines from regulators in Europe and culminated in the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. That case involved a British political consulting firm hired by Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign that paid a Facebook app developer for the personal information of tens of millions Facebook users. The fallout led to Facebook agreeing to pay unprecedented $5 billion penalty to settle FTC charges that the company violated the 2012 consent order by deceiving users about their ability to protect their personal information.

The police had to resort to tear gas and lathi charge to control the Islamist mob. Several vehicles were set ablaze in the area, and stone-pelting continued for hours. On 24th November, violence erupted in Sambhal after a court-ordered survey at Jama Masjid, as Islamists gathered and started pelting stones at the police. They resorted to arson and clashed with the police present at the scene. The police had to resort to tear gas and lathi charge to control the Islamist mob. Several vehicles were set ablaze in the area, and stone-pelting continued for hours. Amidst the violence, the Chief Editor of the Urdu daily Nai Duniya and former Member of Parliament, Shahid Siddiqui, blamed Hindus for the violence unleashed by Muslims. In a social media post, he wrote, “If they search for a shivling under every mosque, then there won’t be any peace in our country and society.” If they search for a shivling under every mosque then there won’t be any peace in our country and society. https://t.co/cycWDz8zLq Siddiqui, who is known for his political turnarounds, has a controversial history. In 2021, a video of him surfaced on social media where he boasted that he had given money to every single madarsa in Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar, presumably from his MPLADS funds. In the viral video, he emphasised how he had helped every single madarsa in Saharanpur. He then said he has given crores of rupees for these institutions. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Shahid Siddiqui inadvertently revealed that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi had bought the anti-viral drug for her brother Rahul Gandhi, even though he did not require it. He had thanked Priyanka for securing Remdesivir for him after reading his plea for help on X (then Twitter). He also revealed that Priyanka Gandhi did not want him to thank her publicly for it, but he did so anyway because he wanted to express his gratitude towards her. The revelation came at a time when people were being advised not to hoard Remdesivir. In May 2020, Siddiqui posted a video of a mother and a toddler sitting on a thin rim connecting two compartments of a fast-moving train. He shared the video of the duo with the intention of criticising the government. Siddiqui wrote, “Look at this mother travelling on a goods train with a child. For her, the risk of dying like this is less than dying of hunger in a heartless city.” He further claimed that such a miserable state of a person can only happen in a country like India. The post was later deleted. In reality, the video was from September 2016, and the location was not India but Bangladesh. The Editor-in-chief of the Urdu daily Nai Duniya Shahid Siddiqui has had a very interesting political career. In the 24-year of being in politics, he has changed his affiliations repeatedly. Siddiqui, who joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) for the second time on June 7, 2021, started his political journey with Congress. He was appointed as the head of the party’s minority cell in 1997. He then joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2002 as its national general secretary. Siddiqui served in the Rajya Sabha for the Samajwadi Party from 2002 to 2008, but he left the party on July 19, 2008, to join their then arch-rival, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He resigned from the SP because he refused to vote in favour of the UPA during the nuclear deal’s trust vote. Siddiqui was, however, dismissed from the BSP on December 14, 2009, after he spoke against Mayawati. Siddiqui was fired just hours after giving an interview to a national English newspaper in which he attempted to portray Mayawati as a dictator. He then joined the RLD in April 2010, claiming he supported then-RLD head Ajit Singh’s demand for the creation of a state of Harit Pradesh. Siddiqui resigned from the RLD in protest over the party’s partnership with Congress before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2012. He thenwent back to the Samajwadi Party. After forming the government in 2012, the Samajwadi Party fired Siddiqui in July of that year for interviewing Narendra Modi, who was then the CM of Gujarat. After his expulsion, Siddiqui cried foul over his removal from the party. He slammed the then SP head Mulayam Singh saying that the latter owed a lot of his popularity to him. He said that when no publication was ready to write in favour of Malayam Singh, it was his Nai Duniya that had written in his support. Nevertheless, after being ousted from the SP, it is believed that Siddiqui stayed away from politics for a while, until, one fine day, he announced his support to Aam Aadmi Party. He claimed he was not joining the party but had extended support the party’s campaign. He had urged all Delhites to vote for AAP. On 19th November, a court-mandated survey was conducted at Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The court ordered the survey in response to a petition filed by Supreme Court Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, and seven co-plaintiffs, asserting that the mosque occupies the site of a temple dedicated to Bhagwan Kalki. The mosque in question is a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act of 1904. The survey was carried out under the supervision of Advocate Commission. A heavy police force was deployed in the area to ensure the survey proceeded peacefully. During the survey, however, Muslims living in the area gathered outside the Jama Masjid and raised religious slogans. The District Magistrate of Sambhal confirmed that the survey was completed in around two hours and stated that a report would be submitted to the Civil Court, which will review it on the next date of hearing, 29th November 2024. OpIndia accessed the petition filed by the plaintiffs in the case. OpIndia’s detailed report on petition filed at the court can be checked here .

Kyle Richards does not approve of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills costars Dorit Kemsley and Sutton Stracke ’s current feud. “I do not like when anybody talks about people’s looks or their financial situations. It’s ugly,” Richards, 55, said to Page Six on Saturday, November 24. “Listen, I’ve had my arguments. We disagree on the show, but I don’t do ugly.” She continued: “I don’t hit below the belt. I don’t like that.” The drama between Kemsley, 48, and Stracke, 53, began last month, when Stracke did a joint interview with Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Lisa Barlow for MTV UK . The Housewives teamed up to play a game of Who Even Am I? where they had to guess the identity of the celebrity based on a series of clues. When the women got to Kemsley, the digs got personal. As Stracke held up a photo of her RHOBH costar, Barlow responded that she “holds grudges” and “lives way above her means.” Stracke ultimately guessed Kemsley and confessed that they still had unresolved issues to work through. “I don’t think she ever let the mouse go,” Stacke said to Barlow. “The lady can’t get a hint.” Barlow, for her part, paid Kemsley a compliment by calling her “pretty.” Stracke retorted, “Well, when you’ve had enough surgery anybody can be pretty.” After word got out of Stracke’s diss, Kemsley decided to fire back. “Why hasn’t Sutton done [plastic surgery] then?” she said during a November interview with Page Six . “She has the money, right? She can afford ... plastic surgery, so why hasn’t she done it if it is that easy? I’m just curious.” Kemsley also cleared the air regarding her costar’s plastic surgery claims, stating that she hasn’t had any work done aside from a breast augmentation. “I stand here today ... hand on my heart, promise you, I would happily, happily tell you if I did anything other than my boobs,” she confessed “And I have not.” While Stracke and Kemsley have their beef outside of RHOBH , the women have also been at odds with Richards this season. In the season 14 trailer , which gives fans a glimpse of the upcoming season, viewers saw the trio get into a heated argument after a dinner party. You have successfully subscribed. Former Vancouver Canucks Fan Favorite Surprisingly Placed On Waivers By Ottawa SenatorsThe Electoral Commission has been made aware of a fake Fine Gael account on social media platform Bluesky, as a number of parties confirmed they were the targets of fake accounts. Several parties previously said that fake party accounts were being proliferated on Bluesky, including for Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, the Social Democrats, and Aontú. On Wednesday, several fake Bluesky accounts appear to have been suspended by the social media firm, including fake accounts for Micheál Martin, Simon Harris, the Social Democrats, and Aontú. Others, including those for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, were deleted entirely. Bluesky, which started as a research initiative within Twitter in 2019, is a social media website similar to X, with users able to share short posts, photos, and videos. It has become more popular in recent weeks, with millions of users joining the platform in the wake of the US presidential election. On Wednesday, Fine Gael alleged that members of Ógra Shinn Féin were involved in the setting up of such fake accounts, with a statement on the since deleted Fine Gael Bluesky alleging Ógra Shinn Féin involvement. However, a Sinn Féin spokesperson strongly rejected any assertions that the party’s youth wing were involved. “This story is a fabrication. No Ógra Shinn Féin members were involved in this,” the spokesperson said. Fine Gael’s Emer Higgins said she hoped that nobody in Sinn Féin was involved, and that senior party figures were not aware. “In this era of increasing misinformation and declining public trust in media, the operation of fake accounts during an election is extremely disconcerting,” Ms Higgins said. A spokesperson for the Electoral Commission confirmed that Fine Gael brought a fake Bluesky account to its attention but said that no formal complaint had been made to the regulator. The commission has a voluntary framework on online electoral process information, political advertising and deceptive AI content that is specific to this general election. The framework has been agreed with a number of social media platforms but Bluesky is not one of these. "We have no formal legislative powers in this area so currently there is no legislative basis for us to deal with complaints," it said. The commission does not have the legal power to order social media platforms to take down misinformation or material that is damaging to the election system.Secretlab gaming chairs have dominated our " best gaming chairs " list for as long as I can remember, and the current victor is the Secretlab Titan Evo. It's a damn fine chair. According to Jacob in his review , this is Secretlab "firing on all cylinders", and the feature set bears that out: it has the nowadays-mandatory 4D adjustable armrests, the ability to recline the chair to 165 degrees (in case you want to sleep in your gaming chair, for some reason) and a multi-tilt mechanism that accommodates any posture you can throw at it. These things usually go for AU$799, but for Black Friday you can pick one up for a more palatable AU$764 . It's about as low as premium Secretlab chairs get: they're basically the Nintendo of the gaming chair world, in the sense that while they do discount occasionally, the prices never dip past a certain threshold. The features listed above sound impressive on paper, but it's kinda difficult to convey the premium vibe the Titan Evo exudes, which is one of the things our review touches on. Part of it is its use of "Neo Hybrid" leatherette, which not only contributes to the aforementioned elegance, but also keeps the seat from getting uncomfortably warm and sweaty during long sessions. Save AU$35 The Titan Evo has been our favourite gaming chair for the longest time (and before that, our favourite gaming chair was a different Secretlab affair). Nowadays the Titan Evo is the benchmark for a brilliant gaming chair—it's comfortable, supportive, and easy to assemble. This discount carves a decent AU$35 from a premium product that basically never goes cheaper than that. Shipping is included. If you're not in the market for a gaming chair or just enjoy sitting on the ground, perhaps you'd like a desk instead? Secretlab's Black Friday sale also extends to its gaming desks, which means our favourite gaming desk—the Secretlab Magnus Pro —is also discounted from AU$1,218 to AU$1,099 (shipping included). What warrants spending that much on a table? This is both a standing and sitting desk, for one. The standing desk feature set is very flexible: you can adjust the bench electronically to the millimetre, and there's space to save three presets. Cable management is all onboard, and the thing is made out of steel . None of your whimsical wood, thank you very much: I like to use a desk that could crush a small hatchback. Jacob's review of this desk is probably more persuasive, though he does note that it's a pricey piece of kit. This discount hardly drops it into impulse buy territory, but if you're in the market for a desk it's a good time to consider this. Save AU$220 A nice saving on this sturdy, digitally modular gaming desk, which has the distinction of being PC Gamer's best gaming desk . Perfect for sitting or standing, this thing packs in brilliant cable management solutions and is made of steel, so it isn't going to break under the weight of your well-endowed rig. While Black Friday doesn't technically start until late next week, most Australian retailers are already offering big sales. The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States. Key matchup Falcons RB Bijan Robinson vs. Chargers run defense. Robinson was shut down by Denver, gaining only 35 yards on 12 carries, and the Atlanta offense couldn't recover. The Chargers rank 10th in the league against the run, so it will be a challenge for the Falcons to find a way to establish a ground game with Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. Atlanta is 4-1 against division rivals. Los Angeles is 2-0 against the NFC South this season. The Chargers have a four-game winning streak against the division. ... Atlanta is 0-2 against AFC West teams, following a 22-17 loss to Kansas City and the lopsided loss at Denver. They will complete their tour of the AFC West with a game at the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 16. ... The Falcons are the league's only first-place team with a negative points differential. Atlanta has been outscored 274-244. Fantasy tip The loss of Dobbins, who has rushed for eight touchdowns, could put more pressure on QB Justin Hebert and the passing game. Herbert's favorite option has been WR Ladd McConkey, who has four TD receptions among his 49 catches for 698 yards. McConkey, the former University of Georgia standout who was drafted in the second round, could enjoy a productive return to the state against a Falcons defense that ranks only 26th against the pass. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl The Associated Press
