Agency The Situation Analysis (SitAn) of Children in Nigeria Report has identified some of the reasons why 53.9 per cent of children in the country are multi-dimensionally poor. The report, launched during the 2024 World Children’s Day celebration on Nov. 20, is a policy document prepared by the Federal Government with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund to identify and understand specific child issues. According to the report, corruption, unemployment, lack of political will, violence and insurgency and inadequate investment in social sectors play significant roles in making Nigerian children poor. It added that displacement and resettlement place additional pressure on existing resources, further exacerbating child poverty in Nigeria. The report defined child poverty as “a situation where children experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to stay alive, develop and thrive, thus leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential and participate as full and equal members of society.” It stated that the seven poverty indicators for children are: health, water, sanitation, nutrition, shelter, education and information. Explaining the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) analysis, the report noted that across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), disparities exist in the multi-dimensional poverty of children. It added that “in Osun State, the incidence of poverty was lowest at 17.5 per cent, incidence of deprivation was 35.5 per cent and the Human Development Index (HDI) ranking was 14th in Nigeria. “In Sokoto State, the incidence of poverty was very high at 89.9 per cent, incidenyce of deprivation was 50.4 per cent and the HDI ranking was 37 per cent. “In Lagos State, poverty incidence was 27.8 per cent, the incidence of deprivation was 36.8 per cent, while the HDI ranking was one per cent.” The report indicated that when disaggregated by rural and urban, 29.7 per cent of urban children were multi-dimensionally poor against 65.7 per cent of rural children. It added that children living in Sokoto State 80.4 per cent, Kebbi 74.9 per cent and Zamfara 74 per cent were worse off, experiencing the highest multidimensional deprivation. “On the other hand, less than 20 per cent of children living in Edo (19 per cent) and Lagos State (17.3 per cent) were multi-dimensionally poor. “Multi-dimensionally poor children living in Sokoto State deprived in 74.1 per cent of the total number of deprivations compared to 57.7 per cent of children living in Lagos.” It said that households with higher number of members and/or children show higher multidimensional deprivation rates than smaller households. It also implied that children in homes with uneducated household heads and/or mothers are more likely to be multi-dimensionally poor compared with children whose household heads attained secondary or higher education levels. It stated that a larger proportion of children with illiterate mothers are multi-dimensionally poor than children with literate mothers. “A striking case of multiple deprivations among children can be observed in the case of Almajiri children. “These children are always on the move and are deprived of decent living conditions, good food and nutrition, water and basic sanitation, access to healthcare facilities, access to education and parental care. “They are also deprived of protection from violence and abuse, participation in decisions affecting their lives, and are often subjected to child labour and abuse. “They are also taken advantage of during times of conflict and often obliged to carry arms.” To ameliorate the situation, the report recommended that stakeholders should play certain roles. It said that family and close caregivers should play crucial roles in alleviating child poverty and securing protection for children. The report notes that children in poverty depend greatly on the existence of public healthcare, education and social services to develop capabilities and learn to function. It added that these institutions and their programmes therefore must be inclusive and structured in an affordable and accessible way and be used by children who need them. “Effective governance at all levels will ensure sound policy, equitable spread and judicious use of resources for investments that enhance household livelihoods, reduce poverty, and foster the rights of children. “Government needs to support families and households by providing minimum income that is sustainable to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent children from reaching their potential.” The News Agency of Nigeria reports that SitAn was first published in 2022 primarily based on household survey data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2016-2017) and the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS 2018). The controversial Australian has played only one match in more than two years because of injury but that has not stopped him being an outspoken presence on social media during a difficult few months for the sport. First it was announced in August that Sinner had failed two doping tests in March but was cleared of fault, while in November Swiatek was handed a one-month ban for a failed test caused by contaminated medication. At a press conference ahead of the Brisbane International, Kyrgios told reporters: “I have to be outspoken about it because I don’t think there’s enough people that are speaking about it. Attorneys for the former Democratic congressman urged the judge Thursday to postpone the hearing due to the upcoming trial of his wife, Nadine Menendez, who's also accused of accepting cash, gold bars and luxury cars in exchange for political favors. The lawyers claim that Bob Menendez's sentencing, which would take place nine days into Nadine's trial, " poses an unnecessary and overwhelming risk of poisoning the proceedings" against her. " It is inevitable that Senator Menendez’s sentencing will be covered by every major (and minor) news organization, with particularly intense focus among media in New York and New Jersey," defense attorneys Adam Fee and Avi Weitzman wrote. "... In the modern age of social media and wall-to-wall news coverage, it is simply not realistic to expect that the jurors — even if instructed to avoid media coverage of the case or 'related cases' — could miss the news of a sentence actually being imposed on Nadine’s husband and co-defendant." Fee and Weitzman also cited Nadine's ongoing health issues as a reason for the request. Her trial was postponed in July as she underwent treatment for breast cancer. "Given Nadine’s medical situation, Senator Menendez often tends to his wife’s physical and emotional needs," the letter continued. "Sentencing him during his wife’s trial will of course take a tremendous emotional toll on both Senator Menendez and his family. We submit that the need for our system to reflect compassion for those charged and convicted of crimes weighs in favor of adjourning the Senator’s sentencing until after Nadine’s trial concludes." Barry Coburn, a lawyer representing Nadine, also sent a letter to Judge Sidney H. Stein supporting the request Thursday. The Menendez corruption scandal broke in 2023, when federal prosecutors indicted the senator and his wife. The couple allegedly used Menendez's political influence to meddle in matters benefitting three New Jersey businessmen, as well as the Egyptian and Qatari governments . The first fatal victim of Storm Darragh has been named as local football coach Paul Fiddler, as tributes poured in for the man in his 40s. Mr Fiddler, who also worked at a local TV shop, was killed after a tree fell on his Citroen van while he was driving on the A59 at Longton, near Preston , at about 9am on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was the first of two linked to the storm , which has caused chaos on Britain’s roads and rail services, as well as severe flooding. Lytham Town FC, which lists Mr Fiddler as first team assistant manager, described him as a club “legend”. “A well loved coach, football player, gaffer but most of all a true friend,” a statement read. “Paul, thank you for everything mate. Our thoughts are with the Lytham Town lads, his friends and family at this time. “Rest in Peace Paul. We will miss you.” Mr Fiddler’s niece, Katie Elliot, described him as “the best uncle”. “I love you so much uncle Paul,” she wrote on Facebook. “I wish I could have known or even said goodbye to you. The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) here on Friday issued an order denying permission for the fireworks display in connection with the annual ritual citing the new amendment to the Union government’s Explosive Rules and based on reports of various State government departments in accordance with that. The Vela Ezunnallippu ritual and the related fireworks display of the two temples are scheduled in January first week. In the order, the district administration stated that there is no physical circumstance to carry out the fireworks display in the area and it may pose a threat to the life and property of the public. The opinion of the investigating officers concerned that the fireworks should not be allowed taking into account the safety of public life has also been considered, said the order. The order was issued on the request for permission to conduct fireworks display submitted by the Thiruvambady Devaswom. Meanwhile, the order denying permission to the fireworks display citing the Central explosive rule guidelines drew sharp reactions from the temple managements. K Girish Kumar, secretary, Thiruvambady Devaswom, vehemently criticised the move and said permission for the fireworks display is being denied citing technical reasons and urged political leaders and Ministers from the district to raise their voice against it. Vela Ezunnallippu “The Vela Ezunnallippu and its related fireworks are held on the same Swaraj Round where the Thrissur Pooram is conducted annually. The present move is a test dose to destroy the iconic Pooram,” he told reporters here. Rejecting the reasons for denying permission for the fireworks display, he said the school, hospital, petrol pump and other such institutions have been there in the area for years and the rituals were held there without any issues in the past. The fireworks display is to be conducted in the midnight after taking all necessary precautions and so it would not pose any security issues as claimed in the order, the Devaswom secretary further said. Without naming anyone, he further alleged that there were attempts to block the parading of jumbos and the apex court granted permission for the same recently. Now-a-days, the temple authorities are forced to approach court for each and everything to protect the traditional rituals, he added.
