Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president, has died at 100President Jimmy Carter may have only had one term in the White House, but he remained a familiar figure on the world stage long after clearing his desk at the Oval Office. Despite a resounding defeat at the hands of Ronald Reagan in 1980, the Democrat forged a new path promoting causes such as electoral probity abroad, social justice and drives to rid the world of medical conditions. His first foreign visit as president was to the UK where then prime minister James Callaghan, as well as the usual visits in London, took his guest to the North East with a visit to Newcastle, Sunderland and Washington – the village bearing the name of the first ever president. Mr Carter delighted crowds in the North East by saying “Howay the lads” during a speech to the assembled throng. He also received a miner’s lamp from 12-year-old Ian McEree in Washington. The 39th US president also carried out more traditional presidential duties, including meetings with western European leaders during his time in London while the Cold War was still ongoing. The practising Baptist continued his globetrotting ways after leaving power, even without Air Force One as his vehicle. He was also part of the Elders, a group of experienced statesmen and women drawn from all corners of the world.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has nvited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration next month — extending a diplomatic olive branch even as Trump threatens to levy massive tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump's incoming press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed on Thursday that Trump invited Xi, but said it was “to be determined” if the leader of the United States' most significant economic and military competitor would attend. In fact it seems unlikely. Xi is likely to see the invitation as too risky to accept, and the gesture from Trump may have little bearing on the increasingly competitive ties between the two nations as the White House changes hands, experts say. Danny Russel, vice president for international security and diplomacy at the Asia Society Policy Institute, said Xi would not allow himself to “be reduced to the status of a mere guest celebrating the triumph of a foreign leader — the U.S. president, no less.” Still, Leavitt saw it as a plus. “This is an example of President Trump creating an open dialogue with leaders of countries that are not just our allies, but our adversaries and our competitors too,” she said in an appearance on Fox News' program ”Fox & Friends." “We saw this in his first term. He got a lot of criticism for it, but it led to peace around this world. He is willing to talk to anyone and he will always put America’s interest first.” CBS News first reported the invitation to Xi. Asked at a Chinese Foreign Ministry briefing on Thursday about Trump's invitation, spokesperson Mao Ning responded: “I have nothing to share at present.” Leavitt said that other foreign leaders have also been invited, but did not provide any details. The move by Trump to invite a leader of an adversarial nation to the American moment that is Inauguration Day is unorthodox. But it also squares with his belief that foreign policy—much like a business negotiation—should be carried out with carrots and sticks to get the United States' opponents to operate closer to his administration's preferred terms. Jim Bendat, a historian and author of “Democracy’s Big Day: The Inauguration of Our President,” said he was not aware of a previous U.S. inauguration attended by a foreign head of state. “It's not necessarily a bad thing to invite foreign leaders to attend,” Bendat said. “But it sure would make more sense to invite an ally before an adversary.” Edward Frantz, a presidential historian at the University of Indianapolis, said the invitation helps Trump burnish his “dealmaker and savvy businessman” brand. “I could see why he might like the optics," Frantz said. “But from the standpoint of American values, it seems shockingly cavalier." White House officials said it was up to Trump to decide whom he invites to the inauguration. “I would just say, without doubt it's the single most consequential bilateral relationship that the United States has in the world,” White House national security spokesman John Kirby said. “It is a relationship both fraught with peril and responsibility.” Trump on Thursday during an appearance at the New York Stock Exchange , where he was ringing the opening bell to open the market, said he’s been “thinking about inviting certain people to the inauguration” without referring to any specific individuals. “And some people said, ‘Wow, that’s a little risky, isn’t it?’” Trump said. “And I said, ‘Maybe it is. We’ll see. We’ll see what happens.’ But we like to take little chances.” Meanwhile, a top aide to Hungarian President Viktor Orban, one of Trump's most vocal supporters on the world stage, said Thursday that Orban isn't slated to attend the inauguration. “There is no such plan, at least for the time being," said Gergely Gulyás, Orban's chief of staff. The nationalist Hungarian leader is embraced by Trump but has faced isolation in Europe as he's sought to undermine the European Union's support for Ukraine, and routinely blocked, delayed or watered down the bloc’s efforts to provide weapons and funding and to sanction Moscow for its invasion. Orban recently met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Every country's chief of mission to the United States will also be invited, according to a Trump Inaugural Committee official who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Xi invitation comes as Trump has threatened to enact massive tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China to get those countries to do more to reduce illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He has said that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada and that China could be hit with even higher tariffs. China produces precursor chemicals used in the production of fentanyl, but Beijing has stepped up efforts over the last year to crack down on the export of the chemicals. “We’ve been talking and discussing with President Xi, some things, and others, other world leaders, and I think we’re going to do very well all around,” Trump said in a CNBC interview Thursday. Xi during a meeting with President Joe Biden last month in Peru urged the United States not to start a trade war. “Make the wise choice,” Xi cautioned. “Keep exploring the right way for two major countries to get along well with each other.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also pushed back on Trump's threats, warning such a tariffs move would be perilous for the U.S. economy as well. Trudeau earlier this week said that Americans “are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive” and said he will retaliate if Trump goes ahead with them. Trump responded by calling Canada a state and Trudeau the governor. In addition to the tariff dispute, U.S.-China relations are strained over other issues, including what U.S. officials see as Beijing indirectly supporting Russia's war on Ukraine. The Biden administration says China has supported Russia with a surge in sales of dual use components that help keep its military industrial base afloat. U.S. officials also have expressed frustration with Beijing for not doing more to rein in North Korea's support for the Russian war. China accounts for the vast majority of North Korea’s trade. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has dispatched thousands of troops to Russia to help repel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk border region. The North Koreans also have provided Russia with artillery and other munitions, according to U.S. and South Korean intelligence officials. Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration takes place a day after the U.S. deadline for ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of social media giant TikTok, to sell the social media app or face a ban in the United States. — Associated Press writers Didi Tang in Washington and Balint Domotor in Budapest, Hungary, contributed reporting.Share Tweet Share Share Email In today’s competitive market, understanding what your competitors are doing is key to staying ahead. A 76-year-old man police later identified as Walter J Blucas, of Erie, was hospitalised in critical condition. Responders detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property and township police said on Saturday that investigators determined that “a faulty flue and exhaust pipe on a gas heating system caused the carbon monoxide leak”. Two medics were taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide exposure and a police officer was treated at the scene. As a model, Haddon appeared on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Esquire in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1973 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She also appeared in about two dozen films from the 1970s to 1990s, according to IMDb, including 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway, starring John Cusack. Haddon left modelling after giving birth to her daughter, Ryan, in the mid-1970s, but then had to re-enter the workforce after her husband’s 1991 death. This time, she found the modelling industry far less friendly: “They said to me, ‘At 38, you’re not viable,'” Haddon told The New York Times in 2003. Working a menial job at an advertising agency, Haddon began reaching out to cosmetic companies, telling them there was a growing market to sell beauty products to aging baby boomers. She eventually landed a contract with Clairol, followed by Estee Lauder and then L’Oreal, for which she promoted the company’s anti-aging products for more than a decade. She also hosted beauty segments for CBS’s The Early Show. “I kept modelling, but in a different way,” she told The Times, “I became a spokesperson for my age.” In 2008, Haddon founded WomenOne, an organisation aimed at advancing educational opportunities for girls and women in marginalised communities, including Rwanda, Haiti and Jordan. Haddon was born in Toronto and began modelling as a teenager to pay for ballet classes – she began her career with the Canadian ballet company, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, according to her website. Haddon’s daughter, Ryan, said in a social media post that her mother was “everyone’s greatest champion. An inspiration to many”. “A pure heart. A rich inner life. Touching so many lives. A life well lived. Rest in Light, Mom,” she said.
(The Center Square) – California Assemblyman Bill Essayli has proposed a bill that would require every school in the state to have armed school resource officers on campus. Essayli introduced this bill shortly after two Kindergarteners were shot on the playground at their school in Oroville. “Yesterday, two innocent children were shot in cold blood,” reads a statement from Essayli. “This is not a time for empty rhetoric, it is a time for action. Accordingly, today I introduced AB 68 to mandate every school in California have an Armed School Resource Officer on campus during school hours. As elected officials we have a sacred duty to protect our most vulnerable citizens from this harm, this includes our children at school.” The Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco affirmed this statement, noting that there could have been a faster response if the school had a school resource officer. “We need armed officers at our schools,” Bianco said in a statement. “Yesterday is a perfect example of the tragic consequence of not having an officer immediately available to intervene when two innocent boys were shot on campus. We need to take action now before more lives and families are destroyed. As Sheriff of Riverside County, I don’t play politics with public safety. I urge the politicians in Sacramento to do the same. We need to pass AB 68, a common sense bill that will protect our school and our children.” The two boys were shot on Dec. 4 at Feather River Adventist School and remain in critical condition. The suspect of the shooting committed suicide after injuring the boys. While Essayli proposed this bill in response to the shooting, Feather River Adventist School is a private school and AB 68 will not apply to private schools. “It does not apply to private schools, but this bill will set the standard for how we protect schools,” reads a comment by Essayli on X. “There is nothing stopping private schools from implementing the same policy.” Essayli proposed this legislation in the last legislative session - AB 3038 - but this was killed in the Assembly Education Committee in April after lack of support from Democrats.Little signs statement backing Trump immigration and deportation policiesCancer natives enter the week of December 29, 2024, to January 4, 2025, with a blend of optimism and caution. While the week highlight a range of moods—initial joy, occasional lows, and varied challenges—you can expect a generally transformative period. As the week begins (around the 29th), you may feel a surge in enthusiasm, with your confidence especially high if you are in a learning or service-oriented profession. The desire to socialize could prompt you to attend family functions or community events. This early momentum helps you forge positive connections that might open doors later on. Moving into the 30th and 31st, you could experience a slight dip in physical vitality or a sense of unease stemming from unseen pressures. You may notice an uptick in caution: you become less willing to share personal thoughts or strategies, and you choose to guard your time more carefully. This cautious stance isn’t a drawback—instead, it helps protect you from misunderstandings or hidden opponents, especially if you suspect individuals around you might not have your best interests at heart. By the time the New Year arrives, the overall energy lightens, and you find small joys in family outings, friendly picnics, and the pursuit of new experiences. You might also receive proposals—if you are single or unmarried, a piece of romantic news could sweeten your holiday celebrations. As January begins, your practical side takes over. You become more mindful of where you place your energy, selecting partnerships and engagements that feel genuinely supportive. You’ll find that cooperation with your spouse or someone close can bring surprising benefits, whether it’s moral support or even practical help in your daily work. By the 3rd and 4th of January, it’s crucial to stay alert while traveling. There may be minor disappointments or unsettling news that tests your composure, but holding onto emotional equilibrium will see you through. The week closes with a reflective mood: even if you face some depressive thoughts or hurdles, you’re better equipped to address them by leaning on supportive networks. Love & Relationship In your personal life, the early part of this week (particularly around the 30th) could expose tensions if you allow external stressors to infiltrate your home environment. Communication remains key—try to express yourself calmly to avoid any unnecessary debates that might sour the mood. Despite these rough patches, the New Year holiday fosters harmony. If you are married or in a serious partnership, you’ll likely share romantic moments, especially on dates or casual outings. For unmarried or single Cancerians, the midweek interval heralds exciting possibilities. You might receive a proposal from a friend, relative, or even someone you’ve known casually. This is a favorable time to open up and explore where things could lead. However, lingering sensitivity means you should stay mindful of your own emotional boundaries. By the weekend, be patient if you notice arguments flaring up over trivial matters—these momentary conflicts often ease once open communication resumes. Education & Career Cancer students can anticipate a positive start to the week, especially around the 29th and 30th. You may excel in your studies, complete assignments with renewed confidence, and see progress in competitive exams—particularly if you’re disciplined about not sharing your ideas unnecessarily. Later in the week, you might be drawn to group study sessions or extended research, but remember to keep your guard up about whom you trust with essential information. Those in service or business could go through varying phases. Early on, you might feel unstoppable—attending social or professional gatherings and networking to forge fruitful ties. Around the middle of the week, be cautious of negative influences at work. Your focus is best maintained by staying in close contact with trusted mentors or supportive team members. If you’re a businessperson, traveling to explore expansion opportunities could be beneficial; just be careful when scheduling deals or making investments. Money & Finance Monetary matters show a subtle but consistent improvement throughout the week. Initially, you may enjoy a sudden or unexpected inflow, maybe through a bonus, a clearance of a blocked payment, or simple recognition of your efforts. Nevertheless, the 31st warns against borrowing money hastily or making large purchases if you’re not fully prepared. As January begins, you might contemplate investments—especially if you’re seeking to grow your capital in secure or semi-speculative avenues. It’s a favorable time to save diligently, but weigh your decisions thoroughly before putting funds into short-term trades or impulsive deals. While opportunities for speculation or property purchases may arise, double-check the terms and remain mindful of your long-term financial goals. Health & Well-being Health-wise, the week starts on a positive note, with the 29th and 30th hinting at decent energy levels and an overall sense of vitality. However, minor hidden issues might emerge around the 31st, including susceptibility to stress, nervousness, or secret ailments like urinary discomfort or digestive imbalances. Staying vigilant—especially with your diet and hydration—will minimize these risks. Physical exercise or mild activities prove beneficial throughout this period. Committing to daily stretches, brisk walks, or a regular routine can keep mood swings in check and reinforce emotional equilibrium. The latter half of the week prompts caution while driving and working around the house. Avoid overburdening yourself with tasks that demand significant physical exertion, as accidents or small injuries might become more likely if you’re distracted or fatigued. By the time the weekend approaches, prioritize rest, relaxation, and open dialogue with loved ones to maintain emotional clarity. Overall, the week nudges you to stay balanced amid both uplifting and challenging moments. With thoughtful communication, steady self-care, and consistent dedication to your personal and professional aims, you’ll navigate these days successfully—and welcome the upcoming weeks in a stronger state of mind. Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:MSGE) Short Interest UpdateGEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — Toyota said Thursday it will build a new paint facility as part of a $922 million investment at its factory complex in Georgetown, Kentucky, making it the second big addition announced this year at the automaker's largest global manufacturing plant. In February, the company said it would invest $1.3 billion at its Kentucky complex, in part so it can build an all-new three-row electric SUV to be sold in the U.S. Neither project will add any new jobs at the facility, which now employs about 10,000 workers. However, the investments reinforce Toyota's commitment to long-term job stability, the company said. The new paint facility, scheduled to open in 2027, will add 1 million square feet of capacity while decreasing carbon emissions by 30% and water usage by 1.5 million gallons per year, Toyota said. It will enable the company to offer more diverse color options for its vehicles, the company said. “Toyota’s commitment to advanced paint technologies goes beyond aesthetics,” said Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky. “It encompasses efficiency, sustainability and quality, leading the industry in environmentally responsible manufacturing.” The project also will increase flexibility for future vehicle production and advances Toyota's goal to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, the automaker said. Toyota’s investment in the Bluegrass State has surpassed $11 billion since breaking ground at the central Kentucky site in 1986. Georgetown is 16 miles (26 kilometers) north of Lexington, Kentucky.

Top council leader quits over claims he sent refugees explicit messagesOpinions expressed by Digital Journal contributors are their own. As our daily lives move increasingly into the cybersphere, so have malicious digital actors proliferated, seeking to exploit vulnerabilities in cybersecurity systems to extract sensitive commercial and personal data. According to the ID Theft Center’s Annual Data Breach Report , incidences of cyber security breaches in the US increased 72% from the previous all-time high in 2021, affecting a staggering 350 million customers. It’s a trend repeated in the UK, where half of businesses have reported breaches and attacks in the last 12 months, according to a UK government report from April 2024. Unsurprisingly, larger organisations, who often hold the most commercially valuable information, are most at risk. According to the same report, 74% of large and 70% of medium businesses have reported incidents. But while the business need to protect sensitive data from malicious actors is clear, there is a second side to the story that is often overlooked: customer trust. Customers are now more exposed to the impact of cybersecurity breaches than ever before. According to Bitdefender’s 2024 Consumer Cybersecurity Assessment Report , 24% of customers experienced a cybersecurity incident in the year 2023. And in one of the report’s most surprising findings, young people were much more likely to experience a cybersecurity breach: 37.5% of 16-24 year olds reported a security incident in 2023, compared to just 11.9% of people aged 55% or over. It’s more important now than ever for companies to establish robust cybersecurity systems not only for regulatory compliance, but also to reassure the more digitally conscious — and vulnerable — generation that their sensitive personal information is in safe hands. As the number of high-profile cyber-attacks increases, it’s no surprise that bolstering corporate cyber-defences is at the top of the legislative agenda for European governments. Announced during the King’s speech in July of this year, Sir Keir Starmer’s new Labour government has pledged to deliver a Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, expected to be put before Parliament in 2025. The Bill would address the ‘urgent update’ needed to British cyber legislation that has reportedly fallen behind those of the EU, from whom the UK’s current set of regulations are inherited. The regulation the Government is referencing is the EU’s NIS2 Directive, an update to the previous NIS Directive passed by the EU Parliament in 2022 which will require companies in critical sectors to implement cybersecurity policies and training, in addition to stringent reporting requirements in the case of a cyber breach. But while the imperative for businesses to align with new governmental cybersecurity regulations is clear, there are a number of benefits to going beyond the legal minimum. According to PwCs 2025 Global Digital Trust Insights survey of over 4,000 businesses and technology leaders, 57% of executives believed cybersecurity gave their companies a competitive advantage. And their beliefs are well justified: according to a report published by McKinsey , 85% of consumers believe that knowing a company’s data privacy policies are important before making a purchase. In fact, the World Economic Forum has gone as far as to argue companies should treat cyber security as a ‘strategic tool’ to build trust with customers. Take Dahua Technology, for example, which has implemented a suite of measures including vulnerability management and incident reporting policies, cryptography and encryption measures, product security management and risk assessments policies to ensure the company is fully compliant with NIS2. Dahua has since announced it has been awarded the Common Criteria EAL 3+ certificate, along with certificates for Information Security Management System, Privacy Information Management System and CSA STAR certifications, demonstrating to its customers a commitment to meeting the highest standards of information security and privacy protection. As cybersecurity incidents proliferate, it’s no surprise that customers are increasingly concerned that the companies they entrust their personal data with are well placed to protect it. Going beyond the minimum requirements for cybersecurity compliance by achieving internationally recognised certifications, as Dahua Technology has done, is an effective means of building consumer trust by demonstrating commitment to the highest standards of cyber-protection.
