With Trump’s victory, Ellen DeGeneres will never return to America: reportRico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players' association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. No further details on Carty's death were provided. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Duckworth says Trump Pentagon pick is "flat-out wrong" about women in combat

Scanlan: Time for legislators to protect womenOne of the key factors that contribute to the difference in prices is the level of expertise and experience of the dental practitioners. Institutions with highly skilled and specialized dentists may charge more for their services, as they are able to provide more advanced and effective treatment options for toothache. On the other hand, general dentists or dental clinics with less experienced staff may offer lower prices but may not necessarily provide the same level of care or successful treatment outcomes.

Shopian, Nov 22: A recent snowfall along the heritage Mughal Road turned the entire area into a wonderland. The snow covered pine trees dotting the awe- inspiring mountains offer a spell-casting view in different hues of season. However, amidst this natural beauty, the halting stations—Sukh Saria and Aliabad Sarai—along the road, which have always been a major attraction for the tourists and travellers, remain in a state of disrepair. These crumbling halting stations reflect the government’s apathy and neglect in preserving the cultural heritage. Located at an altitude of 2700 meters, barely a 40-minute drive from Shopian town, the Sukh Sarai is a Mughal marvel. The halting station occupies a vast 9,600 square feet and is situated in the middle of a serene meadow. This Mughal era mud, brick and stone structure is lying in a run-down state with its entrance walls completely damaged. A short drive away along the road is located Alibad Sarai. The rectangular is situated on the banks of the River Panchal. The Sarai was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and was later restored by Emperor Jahangir through his Governor Ali Mardan Khan. The halting station was among the 14 such structures from Delhi to Lahore enroute to Srinagar. The Saria was designated as a monument under the central protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and managed according to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act of 1958. However, the dilapidated and decaying Sarai, which is now covered by thick overgrown vegetation, speaks volumes of the government’s indifference. “The authorities are hardly bothered about preserving our heritage. It has been our long-standing demand to initiate steps to protect these historic monuments,” said Mitha Gatoo, a social activist from the area. Gatoo said that civil society members took up the matter with higher authorities umpteen times but nothing was done about it. He said that preserving such sites would not only help the next generation connect with their history, but also give a boost to the local economy. The Department of Culture launched a scheme aimed at revival, restoration and preservation, maintains and of the architecture and heritage in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. The Sarai was included in the scheme, but nothing has been done so far. An official, however, said that District Development Commissioner, Shopian Mohammad Saleem Shahid Dar convened a high-level meeting of officials including officials from the ASI and forest department, to discuss the preservation and restoration of the glory of these Sarais. He said that a host of possibilities were discussed to preserve these monuments. “Some eco-friendly steps will be initiated to build an approach to Aliabad Saria,” added the official.Frustrated and feeling violated, the woman demanded that the man delete the photos and questioned his motives for taking them. Burt died over the weekend, the Crocosaurus Cove reptile aquarium in Darwin, Australia, said. He was at least 90 years old. “Known for his independent nature, Burt was a confirmed bachelor – an attitude he made clear during his earlier years at a crocodile farm,” Crocosaurus Cove wrote in social media posts. The aquarium added: “He wasn’t just a crocodile, he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those who worked with him and the thousands who visited him over the years.” A saltwater crocodile, Burt was estimated to be more than 16 feet long. He was captured in the 1980s in the Reynolds River and became one of the most well-known crocodiles in the world, according to Crocosaurus Cove. The 1986 film stars Paul Hogan as the rugged crocodile hunter Mick Dundee. In the movie, American Sue Charlton, played by actress Linda Kozlowski, goes to fill her canteen in a watering hole when she is attacked by a crocodile before being saved by Dundee. Burt is briefly shown lunging out of the water. But the creature shown in more detail as Dundee saves the day is apparently something else. The Internet Movie Database says the film made a mistake by depicting an American alligator, which has a blunter snout. The Australian aquarium where Burt had lived since 2008 features a Cage of Death which it says is the nation’s only crocodile dive. It said it planned to honour Burt’s legacy with a commemorative sign “celebrating his extraordinary life and the stories and interactions he shared throughout his time at the park”.Is the NORAD Santa tracker safe from a government shutdown?

'Prime for slapping': Fireball offers whiskey stocking to get you through the holidaysAs Manchester United continues to strive for success on both domestic and European fronts, the performances of their Argentine international players will be closely scrutinized. From once being hailed as defensive stalwarts to now facing doubts over their capabilities, the journey of these players at the club serves as a cautionary tale of the unforgiving nature of professional football. Only time will tell if they can rediscover their form and silence their critics, or if their time at Manchester United will be remembered as a missed opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.

As her students finished their online exam, Arlet Lara got up to make a cafe con leche. Her 16-year-old son found her on the kitchen floor. First, he called Dad in a panic. Then 911. “I had a stroke, and my life made a 180-degree turn,” Lara said, recalling the medical scare she experienced in May 2020 in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The stroke affected my left side of the body.” Lara, an avid runner and gym-goer couldn’t even walk. “It was hard,” said the 50-year-old mom from North Miami and former high school math teacher. After years of rehabilitation therapy and a foot surgery, Lara can walk again. But she still struggles with moving. This summer, she became the first patient in South Florida to get an implant of a new and only FDA-approved-nerve stimulation device designed to help ischemic stroke survivors regain movement in their arms and hands. Every year, thousands in the United States have a stroke, with one occurring every 40 seconds, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of strokes are ischemic, often caused by blood clots that obstruct blood flow to the brain. For survivors, most of whom are left with some level of disability, the Vivistim Paired VNS System — the device implanted in Lara’s chest — could be a game changer in recovery, said Dr. Robert Starke, a neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist. He also serves as co-director of endovascular neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Lara underwent the procedure. The Vivistim Paired VNS System is a small pacemaker-like device implanted in the upper chest and neck area. Patients can go home the same day. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the stroke rehabilitation system in 2021 to be used alongside post-ischemic stroke rehabilitation therapy to treat moderate to severe mobility issues in hands and arms. Lara’s occupational therapist can activate the device during rehabilitation sessions to electrically stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down to the abdomen and regulates various parts of the body’s nervous system. The electrical stimulation rewires the brain to improve a stroke survivor’s ability to move their arms and hands. Lara also has a magnet she can use to activate the device when she wants to practice at home. Her therapy consists of repetitive tasks, including coloring, pinching cubes and grabbing and releasing cylindrical shapes. After several weeks of rehabilitation therapy with the device, Lara has seen improvement. “Little by little, I’m noticing that my hand is getting stronger,” Lara said in September. “I am already able to brush my teeth with the left hand.” Since then, Lara has finished the initial six-week Vivistim therapy program and is continuing to use the device in her rehabilitation therapy. She continues to improve and can now eat better with her left hand and can brush her hair with less difficulty, according to her occupational therapist, Neil Batungbakal. Starke sees the device as an opportunity to help bring survivors one step closer to regaining full mobility. Strokes are a leading cause of disability worldwide. While most stroke survivors usually can recover some function through treatment and rehabilitation, they tend to hit a “major plateau” after the first six months of recovery, he said. Vivistim, when paired with rehabilitation therapy, could change that. Jackson Health said results of a clinical trial published in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet in 2021 showed that the device, “when paired with high-repetition, task-specific occupational or physical therapy, helps generate two to three times more hand and arm function for stroke survivors than rehabilitation therapy alone.” The device has even shown to benefit patients 20 years after their original stroke, according to Starke. “So now a lot of these patients that had strokes 10 to 15 years ago that thought that they would never be able to use their arm in any sort of real functional way are now able to have a real meaningful function, which is pretty tremendous,” Starke said. Vivistim’s vagus-nerve stimulation technology was developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Texas Biomedical Device Center and is being sold commercially by Austin-based MicroTransponder, a company started by university graduates. Similar devices are used to treat epilepsy and depression. For Lara, the device is a new tool to help her recovery journey. “Everything becomes a challenge, so we are working with small things every day because I want to get back as many functions as possible,” Lara said. Patients interested in Vivistim should speak with their doctor to check their eligibility. The FDA said patients should make sure to discuss any prior medical history. “Adverse events included but were not limited to dysphonia (difficulty speaking), bruising, falling, general hoarseness, general pain, hoarseness after surgery, low mood, muscle pain, fracture, headache, rash, dizziness, throat irritation, urinary tract infection and fatigue,” the FDA said. MicroTransponder says the device is “covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance with prior authorization on a case-by-case basis.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!None
